Dean Wolfe is a Construction Equipment Territory Manager in Regina and has been working at Redhead Equipment for 35 years. He started out working in the steam bay washing and painting equipment. He then became a Service Field Tech, working his way to Shop Foreman, Service Manager and finally to sales where he has been for the past 20 years.

One of the biggest challenges of his job is managing time to commit to a customer fully, partially committing is not an option:

“If you have questions coming from a customer at 8 o’clock at night you have to do what you can to fulfill their needs, no matter the time of day.” Dean also mentioned his favorite part of the job is meeting and visiting with customers in their environment, seeing them operate their equipment and ensuring we meet their needs. “When you deliver a piece of equipment and see a satisfied customer and then deliver the second piece of equipment and know you have a repeat customer, it’s just so satisfying,”

Dean says.

When asked what makes Redhead Equipment great, Dean’s reasoning for the company being around for so long is the reputation and dedication of service to the customers:

“We treat them like family,”

he says and goes on the mention of how the environment, the family atmosphere and happy people at Redhead make working for the company an enjoyable experience.

“I’ve devoted the majority of my working career to Redhead Equipment and I wouldn’t change it. I got a great opportunity to work with construction equipment and everyone wants to, I’m really just a big kid.”

After a farming year wrought with challenges, from unseasonably cold weather in June to rain and snow during most of the harvest season, the staff at Redhead Equipment in Prince Albert, South Karolina, were pleased with the outcome of their test wheat crop. Redhead Equipment has announced a donation of $20,000 from their 2019 Field of the Future to the Rose Garden Hospice Association (RGHA).

Marina Mitchell, media relations and board member for the RGHA said:

“We are so very pleased to have been chosen as the charity to receive the Field of the
Future donation. We appreciate this generous support from Redhead Equipment and partners in this endeavor. This donation brings us closer to our goal”.

With ten acres located on the corner of Marquis Road and 4th Avenue West, Rose Garden Hospice will be a hospice care centre, providing personal support, companionship, bereavement, spiritual and compassionate care to people with a terminal illness and their loved ones. Thanks to generous individuals and businesses in the Prince Albert area, the RGHA has raised over $1.7 million dollars and is well on the way to see this facility come to fruition.

When deciding which organization to support, the Redhead Equipment team in Prince Albert knew it was important to support the RGHA.

Scott Vanderlinde, Agriculture Sales Manager at Redhead Equipment in Prince Albert added:

“The Rose Garden Hospice is an important health care project for Prince Albert and its surrounding communities. We are happy to be part of building this facility and look forward to seeing its completion.”

Redhead Equipment’s Field of the Future Initiative began in 2013 as a way to test various crops in the area, but its use has far exceeded those initial benefits. Over the past seven years, this initiative has provided over $245,000 to local charities and community organizations in the Prince Albert Area.

The Field of the Future initiative is successful due to the support from staff, sponsors and supporters. Redhead Equipment would like to thank Tomtene Seed Farm for donating the wheat seed, Decisive Farming who provided variable rate maps, Lake Country Co-Op for scouting the fields and for fertilizer, Fremont Trucking who hauled the grain to the elevator, and Viterra/Whitestar Elevator for the reduced fees for grain drying and for taking the delivery straight from the field the day they harvested.

Craig Slobodian, CE Corporate Sales Manager – Regina, 26 years

Craig Slobodian started working for Redhead Equipment 26 years ago as
the assistant controller focusing on accounting, payroll, and some human resources
duties. The company was much smaller back then, under 100 employees and the
position covered a lot of ground. He then became the regional sales manager for
Southern Saskatchewan, and has since become the Corporate Sales Manager for
Construction.

When Craig talks about life in sales he says the day to day can be unpredictable.

“We get surprises daily, customers get new jobs, have breakdowns and changes, we’re busy every day and things can change drastically by the end of the day. One of the bigger challenges of his role is being able to adapt under pressure with the ever changing customers. Some people need to have a plan, however the group we have in sales seem to work pretty well in panic mode and are able to adapt in pressure situations.”

Craig stated regarding the challenges the sales team faces. The daily challenges are all worthwhile though, knowing our equipment and service is satisfactory to our customers, and how we partake in their business success. Craig says:

“There is satisfaction knowing our equipment was a part of something great like the recent by-pass construction.”

The tagline “Whatever It Takes”, used by RedHead, is demonstrated daily and Craig remembers a time when he and a colleague made a part out of a hockey puck for a customer when they couldn’t find the part they needed in time for the fix.

At the question about why he has stayed with Redhead for so many years and he said it’s a family culture he answered:

“The staff and customers feel like family, lots of friendships are made, its way more than a business.”

Quick questions:

Redhead Equipment is celebrating 70 Years, why do you think the company has been around so long?

“We’re different because we’re a big company that still functions like a little company. The personal touch and feel we use when working with customers, we’re very creative.”

What does Redhead mean to you?

“It’s more than a job, feels like family, and having an employer that gives back at the level they do with Gary’s leadership, it’s a very respectable company and a great place to work”.

Do you have any advice for employees new to Redhead Equipment?

“There is a ton of experience here in these walls, rely on your team and learn from them. Build relationships and lean on others for support”.

Do you have a favourite place to visit?

“Phoenix, Arizona”

If you have an hour of spare time, what do you find yourself doing?

“Sometimes I play video games, however I’m usually spending time with the family and kids”.

Ian Loverick, 12 Years – Mack Technician, Regina

Ian started working with Redhead Equipment 12 years ago as a heavy duty technician for the truck and trailer division in Regina. Throughout his years at Redhead he has had the chance to work at other branches and expand on his experience in the field. He says,

“you get to meet a lot of people in your travels and help them out where it’s needed, so far it’s been a great experience.”

Courtesy of redheadequipment.ca

For Ian a regular day starts at eight AM or earlier depending on how busy the shop is, he gets in to work and is assigned jobs diagnosing and fixing customer’s trucks. Ian says,

“sometimes a customer needs a job done quickly to get back on the road and we at Redhead do whatever it takes to get the job done, which includes pulling guys off other jobs and working overtime; in the end it’s our customers that keep the business rolling.”

One of the challenges of working in his field is keeping up with new technology. The world of technology is always evolving and therefore our technicians are constantly going through training to learn about new innovations and updated technology. Ian says in contrast to that, solving troublesome problems and getting customers out the door satisfied is a very rewarding part of the job.

70 years:

“The product lines carried and our ability to get work turned around for the customers and dedication to service for our customers is what we are known for,” Ian added.

What does Redhead Equipment mean to you?

It feels like family and like home. When you’ve been here 11 years you build bonds with people. It’s a very family oriented company and I enjoy coming to work.

What might surprise us about you?

I have a soft side at times, I like to joke around with the guys all the time here but I have a soft side.

The engineers that design some of these trucks and fix some of the issues that we have!

What do you do with an hour of free time?

Spend with my 2 little boys out playing.

Where is your favorite place to travel?

Duck Mountain SK, camping and fishing.

Richard Scott began work with Redhead Equipment in ’99 as a service technician. He left the company only to return a year later as the CE Shop Foreman. He then became the Ag division Service Manager when the company took over the new building and 2 years later because the Service Operations Manager for the Saskatoon branch.

When asked to describe his role as if to a child, Richard says its “Kind of like being a parent I guess, managing the people in the shops and ensuring work is being completed. I have 4 really good Foreman that help me in each division that I oversee and help me and I help them in each area.” We asked Richard about some of the challenges of his role and he said “keeping everyone happy, from upper management, to the people on the ground can be challenging.” When asked what the biggest reward is, he said working at Redhead is a reward, “the company is very accommodating to your personal lifestyle and I really appreciate that.”

When asked what he thinks of our tag line “Whatever It takes” he said “I think it’s always been a part of our brand even before it was our tagline. A while back, there was a paver that was down once, and we needed a part. I got the answer, the part was stuck in customs in Calgary, and I was on the phone for over 2 hours trying to figure out why, and it was a fax to release the part that got lost. After getting the part released, I got hold of
our pilots, and they went to Calgary and picked up the part and flew it to Saskatoon for the customer. When I called a cab to transport the part to the airport, and they wouldn’t take my credit card over the phone, so I ended up calling a limo service and they picked up the part and drove it the 4 blocks down the street to the airport. After all of that we did get the unit up and running that night;” sharing an example of how at Redhead we do Whatever It
Takes for our customers in need.

Richard also mentioned that the great people and work environment make coming to work enjoyable and the company accommodating to employee needs on and off the job is very valuable.

What advice would you give someone starting a career with Redhead Equipment?

Work to the best of your ability. Don’t be afraid to make a mistake, own it, admit it, move on and learn from it.

Tell me something interesting about working at Redhead Equipment.

I was on the Case Service Advisory Board for a few years and got to travel all over the United States and meet other smaller locations and other Service Managers and Service People.

What do you find yourself doing in your free-time?

I read and catch up on news, or I’m usually driving kids to sports.

Consider a future in which construction machines deliver on their purpose more sustainably, fueled by what we consider “waste.” What if these machines also produce 80% less emissions while improving the working environment of the operators? This was the ambitious goal the CASE Construction Equipment team set for itself. And it’s become more than a goal. The project designers and engineers have achieved it.

The project, code named TETRA, shows how professional construction operators could help spearhead the move away from fossil fuel-powered vehicles toward renewable sources by playing a fundamental role in the “closed loop” virtuous cycle, which sees methane-powered wheel loaders help produce the fuel from waste products and renewable sources, which ultimately powers them. And although this is a concept, CASE, a global construction brand of CNH Industrial N.V., is already working towards ultimate market viability.

The CASE concept uses an FPT Industrial six-cylinder methane engine that has been specifically developed for construction applications and delivers maximum power of 230 hp – identical to the equivalent diesel power plant – and torque up to 1,184 Nm. This is achieved with a 50% reduction in drive-by noise levels, which makes it suited for municipal applications and when working in close proximity to offices, residential areas and people. The engine also offers the same reliability and durability and fuel savings up to 30%. It runs on compressed natural gas (CNG), ensuring 15% less CO2 and 99% less particulate matter than its diesel-based counterpart.

The engine features stoichiometric combustion technology, developed by FPT Industrial and first introduced in 1995. It ensures the correct chemical balance between air and methane in every working condition, delivering clean combustion and low emissions. The technology is applied across the entire natural gas engine portfolio as it enables comparative performance to diesel engines, while delivering ultra-low emissions and high efficiency.

The loader is able to complete the full range of tasks that a standard diesel-powered wheel loader would undertake. From efficient work in quarries, waste handling facilities, agricultural applications, and wood yards through to municipal applications, and those which require extensive transport, this concept machine delivers optimal performance in a productive and sustainable package. Furthermore, it is compatible with the complete range of buckets, and was fitted with high tip and quarry versions from Leonardi Benne during the initial testing activities.

To make efficient use of space, the loader’s fuel is stored within technologically advanced tanks within a sleek and integrated storage unit fitted at the rear and sides of the wheel loader. This configuration enables a full day of autonomy. The wheel loader is as easy to refuel as one powered conventionally by diesel, using a single nozzle, from ground level, and with comparable filling time.

Due to the reduction in polluting emissions arising from methane combustion, a simplified aftertreatment system is used, which features a maintenance-free single standard catalytic converter.

Innovative, Productivity-focused Design

The minimalist design of the cab offers intuitive, clutter-free operation, with instant access to all key controls via ergonomic joysticks and an integrated, armrest-mounted, color touchscreen monitor. The armrest-mounted monitor is the operating hub, and can be used to control the following functions:

Face scan to activate start-up sequence.

Bucket load-fill assist screen which displays target load, current bucket load, via loader arm mounted sensors, and remaining load.

Jobsite map, which tracks incoming trucks, indicates the fastest route to the selected work area and displays general site information.

Weather screens showing real-time weather reports.

Lighting parameters, Bluetooth telephone, heating and ventilation and music controls.

Access to secondary machine parameters, machine settings and additional submenus.

All of these settings can be directly modified on the touchscreen. Upon request, the screen can be swiped from the armrest monitor the lower right-hand A-Pillar screen. When no longer required, the operator simply selects another screen from the armrest monitor to swipe and replace.

The inclined A-Pillar screens have been mounted to align with the cab’s pillars and provide at-a-glance key information:

The top right and left screens display the front and rear camera feed. Cab-mounted cameras replace traditional wing mirrors, and the display is automatically linked to the direction of travel, changing in sync with machine shuttling.

The central right A-Pillar screen features all key machine operating parameters including machine speed, engine speed, fuel level, engine and oil temperature, selected gear, engine hours and time.

The lower right screen can be customized, and enables operators to select, using the armrest color touchscreen, the desired view.

Voice control functionality has been integrated into the cab, through the use of ‘home hub’ technology – a device integrated into the cab roof, which uses Internet of Things technology to action verbal commands. Operators can control cab temperature, select music, make and receive calls and dictate messages using this technology.

Safety First Design

Jobsite safety is a top priority for today’s construction equipment professionals, and ensuring that only fully-qualified operators have access to machines is essential. That is why biometric facial recognition technology has been integrated into the access and start-up sequence. A door-mounted facial scanning sensor, scans the operators face, upon approach, to activate door opening. Once the operator is in the cab, a second scan is conducted from the armrest monitor for final confirmation and to initiate the start-up sequence.

Elements of CNH Industrial’s autonomous vehicle development program have been incorporated into the machine’s design. Advanced obstacle detection technology, which automatically brings the machine to a halt and informs the operator if an obstacle comes into range, is available to further enhance jobsite safety.

Advanced Tire Technology

In order to spotlight the key role tire technology plays in machine productivity, the CNH Industrial and MICHELIN design teams worked in partnership to develop a vision for a future airless tire. This cutting edge design foresees a fusion of the tire/wheel combination and features inbuilt suspension. Furthermore, thanks to its pure rubber and patented composite material construction, it has been designed to withstand the extreme conditions present in construction environments, and could be considered indestructible.

The tire’s honeycomb spoke design is lightweight yet robust and thanks to its bespoke asymmetric tread pattern traction, motricity and grip are significantly improved. The tripod blocks on the inner tread section enhance overall operational stability, as well as assisting turning performance. The airless tires reduce overall machine weight and its large footprint delivers low contact pressure. The striking edge bumpers improve overall tire robustness as well as enhancing protection for extended life. Advanced connectivity is foreseen with integrated sensors providing a stream of real-time data to both the operator and the control room – including a tire wear sensor. When active, the integrated sidewall lights are illuminated, which also function as an additional safety feature.
