AGCO has launched at the World Ag Expo the Massey Ferguson 3 Series Specialty tractor, available in the North American market. This new product line is specifically designed to meet the unique challenges faced by vineyards and orchards and offers seven different models ranging from 75-115 HP. The MF 3 Series tractors are designed to provide a solution for challenging applications, with a focus on efficiency, comfort, and reduced carbon footprint.

“The farmer is at the heart of every Massey Ferguson design, and we are excited to share this brand-new offering with vineyard and orchard operations here in California, as well as across North America.

We understand the importance of productivity and economy in these applications, and we’re proud to offer one of the most powerful, versatile and comfortable machines on the market.”

states Kevin Lewallen, tactical marketing manager for Massey Ferguson North America.

Massey Ferguson’s 3 Series tractors come in a variety of models to suit different agricultural applications. For vineyard and orchard work, there are 75, 95, and 115 HP cab models in the Specialty (SP) version. For tunnel and fruit orchard settings, there are 75, 95, and 105 HP models in the narrow, low-profile Ground Effect (GE) version. Finally, for traditional vineyards, there is a single 95 HP model in the Vineyard (VI) version.

Top-notch vineyard tractor
The Vinyard version offers unparalleled comfort to operators who have to spend long hours driving. The cab is slightly over 3 feet wide, which allows it to navigate through tight vineyard rows with ease. The design is innovative, enabling high power and torque at low engine RPM, which results in maximum efficiency and reduced noise levels.

Farmers can choose between proven transmission options to customize the MF 3VI.95 and others in the series to fit their unique needs in terms of ease of use, fuel economy and much more.

A compact front end and Massey Ferguson’s low-profile automatic transmission fluid (ATF) components provide best-in-class visibility, while a Cat.4-compliant roof pairs with high-tech, ergonomic features inside the cab for optimum productivity and comfort.

Innovative speciality tractor option
The Specialty version offers a dependable tractor with a high return on investment. The 75 HP models have a 3.4-liter, 4-cylinder engine, while higher horsepower models have a 3.6-liter engine.

Exceptional operator comfort and convenience come in the form of a 4-foot-wide cab that strikes a balance to fit the very specific dimensional demands of the market. Farmers can get more done between refuelling with the 3SP model’s 26-gallon fuel tank and ample power for the task at hand.

The MF 3 Series Ground Effect version includes all open-station platform models.

This model is designed to meet the specific requirements of older wine grapes and raisin vineyards, thanks to its narrow and low-profile dimensions. The MF 3GE models offer optimal efficiency with reduced noise and fuel consumption.

Like other models in the 3 Series, the MF 3GE allows farmers to customize horsepower and specifications for an ideal equipment solution that provides power, versatility, and comfort without paying for unnecessary features.

“The Massey Ferguson brand is recognized around the world as a premier manufacturer of durable, user-friendly agricultural equipment.

We’re proud to bring our Farmer-First approach to a new market in North America. All models of the MF 3 Series offer power, manoeuvrability and reliability with a fast ROI and a smaller carbon footprint.”

affirms Lewallen.

A Legacy of Farmer-Focused Innovation

From industry first to industry staples — like Harry Ferguson’s historic 3-point implement hitch system — over the past 175 years, Massey Ferguson has embraced innovation to produce dependable, economic farming implements for a wide range of applications and environments. Ours is a story of ingenuity, grit and a deep understanding of the farmers we serve. When Daniel Massey recognized the benefit of industrially manufactured implements and established Massey Manufacturing Co. in Ontario, Canada, in 1847, he began a legacy of farmer-focused innovation that carries through to our current equipment lineup. Our product line began with some of the first mechanical threshers, and we remained at the forefront of the ag industry with:

The first mass-produced, self-propelled combines and combine harvesters

Some of the first four-wheel-drive tractors

First electronic hitch control systems

And much more

However, it was Harry Ferguson’s TE 20, released in 1946, that truly embodies the spirit of Daniel Massey’s original company. This light, reasonably priced tractor could replace machines one and a half times its size, increasing productivity, versatility and ease of use. As part of the newly created Massey Ferguson brand, Harry Ferguson helped usher in a new generation of straightforward, dependable design. Today, our engineers continue to push the boundaries of performance, productivity and comfort with revolutionary equipment releases in HHP, CUE, material handling, hay and forage, planters and more.

Dependable Farmer Experience

Throughout our 175-year history, Massey Ferguson has made strategic acquisitions and investments to meet the needs of a dynamic industry. We have always focused on providing the right equipment at the right cost for the region and application by leveraging the best components of our portfolio to benefit our customers. These investments include:

Partnership with “Sunshine” stripper harvester, which drastically improved productivity.

Acquisition of Wallis Tractor, featuring the U-frame, which brought us closer to self-supporting frames.

Partnership with Perkins Engines, builders of the most sustainable engines at the time.

Acquisition of Landini, the Italian manufacturer of the first track-type tractor.

In 1994 Massey Ferguson joined the AGCO Corporation brand portfolio. This partnership allows us to combine resources across the family of AGCO brands to provide the most dependable, hardworking equipment for Massey Ferguson customers across the globe. Additionally, it provides access to world-class services, including AGCO’s GenuineCare and AGCO Protection. Farmers can focus on the field, not equipment maintenance, confident their assets are protected by the financial strengths of a global brand.

Straightforward Equipment Solutions

Over the decades, Massey Ferguson has continued to grow by providing solutions to those who wish to increase productivity, dependability and agricultural sustainability. Few brands can boast the wealth of knowledge and decades of experience that have resulted in powerful, dependable components at the forefront of the ag industry. The MF 8S Series is the culmination of 175 years of our progress — and our farmers’.

As North American agriculture changes to meet more stringent health and safety guidelines, operator comfort has become a key focus. Our exclusive Protect-U design puts a 9.4-inch gap between the engine and the cab. This results in less noise — just 68 dBa — and less vibration. A streamlined hood design and all-in-one aftertreatment system paired with a 360-degree view, offer improved visibility in all operations. The MF 8S Series leverages our selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to provide 40% less emissions from previous stages and fuel savings at lower engine revs, all while delivering a straightforward compliance that doesn’t lead to downtime. Additionally, cutting-edge technology, like our Datatronic 5 terminal and smart farming systems, allows farmers to maximize productivity while minimizing their carbon footprint.

“We are proud to celebrate 175 years of serving the global agricultural community. It’s a fantastic milestone. We appreciate the support and loyalty of generations of Massey Ferguson customers as well as those who are discovering the benefits of our straightforward, dependable approach to design with our newest models. From rural lifestyle to production ag, our equipment is built for those who are born to farm.”

Proper sprayer setup and well-timed application leads to the best weed control

AGCO Corporation released the latest update of its Application Crop Tour findings. The AGCO Crop Care Team designed this year’s AGCO Application Crop Tour to show several best practices to maximize the effectiveness of a weed-control program.

Darren Goebel, AGCO director of Global Agronomy and Farm Solutions, says:

“When it comes to controlling weeds, there’s this battle going on between productivity, efficacy, and drift control. Growers want to get over as many acres as they can without having to stop and refill the sprayer. But with today’s contact herbicides, they need to get good coverage while also ensuring that the product they’re spraying reaches its intended target.”

Proper sprayer set-up is key to achieving desired weed-control results.

Using demonstration plots of LibertyLink crops, cotton in Georgia, and soybeans in Illinois, the AGCO team examined the effects of ground speed, sprayer nozzles, droplet size, carrier volume, and sprayer boom height.

Jason Lee, the AGCO agronomist, and farm solutions specialist, says that regardless of treatment, the biggest takeaway from the plots in Illinois was the importance of weed-control timing. Because the plots did not initially experience much weed pressure, the agronomists waited for more weeds to emerge, which allowed some troublesome waterhemp plants to get quite large.

“The problem with waiting for a full flush of weeds before spraying is that some weeds will get way too big and really hard to control. We should control weeds when they’re small: four inches or less in height.”

The AGCO team applied Liberty herbicide at speeds ranging from 5 to 15 mph and with carrier volumes ranging from 10 to 20 gallons per acre. Sprayer nozzles creating droplets of various sizes from medium to extremely coarse also were evaluated.

Goebel says:

“From what we saw, as long as we were using the appropriate nozzle to give us the correct droplet size for the speed we were running, we’d get the right coverage. We thought maybe there would be a bigger effect due to speed, but we really didn’t see any issues as long as we were doing everything else right.”

With weed-control products such as Liberty, which is a contact herbicide, getting adequate coverage is the most important factor, Goebel says. Achieving proper coverage will vary based on sprayer nozzle type and carrier volume.

At lower carrier volumes, such as 10 gallons per acre, using nozzles that create smaller droplets will help improve control.

“However, smaller droplet sizes increase the risk of drift. Higher carrier volumes provide better coverage but require more tank fill-ups. Applicators need to strike that balance between productivity efficacy and drift,”

he adds.

Boom height is crucial for achieving effective weed control. The height above targeted weeds should equal the spacing of nozzles to ensure proper coverage. Booms set too high also can lead to significant evaporation of product and issues with drift control. Courtesy of agcocorp.com

Based on what he observed in the Georgia cotton plots, Goebel recommends applying at least 15 gallons of carrier volume per acre, using nozzles that produce a coarse droplet.

“If you’re going to use nozzles that produce larger droplets, you really should bump the water up some more to ensure you’re getting good coverage,”

he says.

Sprayers equipped with pulse width modulation systems help ensure applicators are maintaining constant pressure, rate, and droplet size no matter the speed at which the application occurs.

Another application factor the AGCO team evaluated was boom height. Goebel says that the coverage penalty for improper height can be severe. The team compared the coverage and weed control achieved with booms at 20 inches and 60 inches above the target.

Boom height is crucial for achieving effective weed control. The height above targeted weeds should equal the spacing of nozzles to ensure proper coverage. Booms set too high also can lead to significant evaporation of products and issues with drift control.

“Booms often get set too high because applicators don’t want them to accidentally hit the ground. But if you’re spraying four to five feet from the target, you’re not going to get proper coverage, and you’ll also likely get more drift. Ideally, for 110-degree spray angles, your boom height above the target should equal your nozzle spacing. So, if your nozzles are 20 inches apart, your boom should be approximately 20 inches above the target. At 60 inches, we only achieved about 30% control. The spray simply didn’t make it to the target due to a combination of drift and evaporation.”

he says, noting that boom-height control systems take the guesswork out of setting heights.

He concludes:

“If you’re trying to get over a lot of acres quickly on a hot, sunny afternoon, boom height is really going to have a big impact. These products need to be applied well, and having a good understanding of application equipment setup is the first step in ensuring an effective weed-control program.”

New 511- to 673-HP track tractors deliver new innovations for efficiency and power plus renowned Fendt reliability, comfort.

AGCO Corporation introduces the new Fendt 1100 Vario MT track tractors. Completely new to the expanding lineup of Fendt products for North America, the 1100 Vario MT tractors combine proven innovations from AGCO’s 30 years of experience in track tractors with newly engineered features that elevate operator comfort and in-field performance. Key aspects include

fuel-efficient Fendt iD low-rev engine management

smooth, stepless VarioDrive continuously variable transmission (CVT)

smooth-riding, patented MTS Smart Ride track system

a high-capacity, dual-circuit hydraulic system and the intuitive Fendt operator interface

Fendt Gold Star Customer Care with a full warranty and no deductible, for 36 months or 3,000 hours plus all scheduled maintenance, and more.

The tractors also offer a new approach to track machine suspension, more ballasting options, two industry-exclusive rear hitch systems and many features to provide operator comfort.

Tom Turner, strategic marketing manager, says:

“There’s nothing we haven’t thought of in creating the new Fendt 1100 Vario MT track tractors. For flotation, ride comfort, fuel efficiency, implement operation, power and reliability, these new track tractors will definitely stand out in the marketplace as a great choice for the heaviest jobs.

Turner says:

“We’ve added some totally new, Fendt-exclusive innovations, such as a steerable three-point hitch system and a hydraulically controlled swinging drawbar option that make headland turns with large implements smoother for the operator, less demanding on the tractor and gentler on the soil. The swinging drawbar allows the tractor to turn closer to the center point for wide planters, air seeders and tillage tools, requiring less power for steering and navigating wet field conditions. The steerable three-point hitch is ideal for contour farming and turning when using mounted implements under heavy draft loads.”

The tractors are designed to handle big crop production jobs, including medium-to-heavy high-speed tillage, as well as the largest planters and seeding implements. Built with reliable and proven technologies, the tractors are backed by the Fendt Gold Star Customer Care Plan, with three years of full machine warranty, all scheduled maintenance, plus a loaner guarantee.

Producers looking for the power to complete their biggest jobs can choose from four models. The 1151 (511 HP), 1156 (564 HP) and 1162 (618 HP) are powered by MAN 6-cylinder, 15.2L diesel engines. The power plant for the Fendt 1167 Vario MT (673 HP), the highest horsepower track tractor on the market today, is the MAN 6-cylinder, 16.2L diesel engine. These engines offer the Fendt iD low-rev engine concept working in unison with the Fendt Tractor Management System (TMS) and stepless VarioDrive transmission. The tractors not only provide maximum torque at 1100 rpms, they are the highest horsepower two-track tractors to offer a CVT transmission for more power to the ground and greater flotation.

Fendt iD and TMS allow the tractors to run in the maximum torque range while delivering low fuel consumption to help reduce operating costs.

The Fendt 1100 Vario MT tractors offer standard gauge settings from 88 to 102 inches, wide gauge settings of 88 to 128 inches and three track styles in four widths from 18 to 36 inches.

Unique Fendt features raise the bar for traction and ride comfort

A variety of engineering advances developed during 30 years of experience with tracks merge in the Fendt 1100 Vario MT tractors to deliver a new standard for traction, flotation and ride comfort from a track tractor.

The AGCO-exclusive, patented Mobil-Trac track system is the only mid-wheel design on the market with a suspended undercarriage and rolling midwheels. By placing the hardbar closer to the front of the tractor, engineers lengthened the wheelbase for better weight and power distribution along the belt to deliver a smoother ride and reduce compaction. These track design features, plus the widest belt offering on the market, provide better flotation to minimize yield-robbing compaction and increase return per acre.

For even greater traction, plus more ride comfort for both field work and road travel, the Fendt 1100 MT Vario tractors feature an innovative new Fendt-exclusive option, Smart Ride Plus load leveling. This hydraulic system for Smart Ride integrates with the front suspension springs to adjust the tractor height, keeping the chassis level to maintain the correct angle between the tractor hitch and rear implements. It also keeps the tractor level when operating heavy front- or rear-mounted attachments. Ride comfort improves because suspension of the leveled tractor can travel equally both up and down. Finally, the self-leveling hydraulics raise or lower the front of the tractor to make attaching or removing the front mono-block weight easier.

Topping off the ride-comfort features of the Fendt 1100 Vario MT tractors is the choice of standard, four-point cab suspension with rubber bumpers and two-point cab suspension with integrated shock absorbers at the rear and two shock absorbers with rubber bumpers on the front.

Industry-first rear hitch systems ease turning, soil disturbance

In addition to a standard Category 5 fixed drawbar with 11,000-pound load rating, the 1166 MT and 1167 MT models are available with the choice of two innovative new hitch systems. Both hitches make headland turns with large implements smoother for the operator, less demanding on the tractor and gentler on the soil. More gentle turns improve operator comfort and improve fuel efficiency.

For towed implements such as expansive planters and tillage tools, the hydraulically controlled, swinging drawbar allows the operator to guide the implement from the tractor, making contour farming, headland turns and navigating through wet fields easier. It provides 28 degrees of horizontal swing left and right, allowing the tractor to turn closer to its natural turning point under load. Auto float, fixed and offset modes give the operator total control of the implement. This hitch boasts a hefty 15,000-pound load rating.

The new steerable hitch system was designed with mounted implements in mind. For tractors equipped with either a standard or high-lift three-point hitch, this new system provides 12 degrees of movement in the hitch and 11.5 degrees of swing with the drawbar allowing the tractor to steer easily around contours and field obstacles without raising the implement. This hitch uses two steering cylinders to keep the drawbar in a fixed position or allow it to float with restriction. It is controlled from the tractor cab and integrated with the tractor steering for smooth turns with large implements.

New high-performance hydraulics for efficient, on-demand hydraulic power

The 1100 Vario MT is available with either a single hydraulic pump providing 58 gpm at 1700 rpm or the Fendt-exclusive dual pump, dual-circuit hydraulic system for up to 116 gpm of hydraulic oil flow. This unique two-pump system allows implements to be connected according to their oil pressure and flow requirements, high or low. It keeps full capacity on reserve until the tractor is paired with an implement with high hydraulic demands, such as a large planter. Valves are dedicated to implement control, the steerable hitch drawbar control and power beyond.

Like other Fendt tractors, the 1100 has separate hydraulic oil reservoirs for the implement and vehicle hydraulic systems, preventing cross-contamination and extending the service interval to two years or 2000 hours.

Ballasting options improve balance, headland quality and operator comfort

The new Fendt 1100 Vario MT tractors are designed with front and chassis options for ballasting.

Front weights improve machine balance, headland quality and provide correct belt-to-ground contact for the idler driver. Options include 20 or 36 suitcase weights providing up to 2,017 and 3,626 pounds, respectively, or the 4,400-pound mono block. Chassis ballasting on the undercarriage places weight near the machine’s center of gravity, using a combination of idler, frame and rear-drive wheel weights. Weight is applied directly to the ground without putting stress on the chassis, axles or final drives to improve drawbar pull capacity.

Intuitive Fendt operation plus operator comfort

The familiar Fendt operator station makes running Fendt 1100 Vario MT tractors feel like being home. The tractor incorporates the 10.4″ Varioterminal, key machine and implement controls and multifunction joystick within the ergonomically designed armrest. The fully adjustable seat and armrest put machine and implement controls at the operator’s fingertips for notable comfort during long hours in the field. The exclusive single-spoke steering wheel is ergonomic for comfortable effortless steering and offers spring-activated return-to-center when released.

Outstanding three-year warranty and service

Each Fendt 1100 Vario MT tractor is backed by Fendt Gold Star Customer Care, assuring more value and more uptime.

Three-inch variation in crop height between low and high planter tire psi.

AGCO Corporation has released the second 2020 Fendt Momentum Crop Tour field update. This update reports AGCO agronomists’ observations of tire-track compaction on plant growth.

Soil compaction caused by wheel traffic is an increasing concern among farmers, especially due to the weight of high-capacity, central-fill planters on the center transport wheels. Several studies have documented plant height reductions caused by compaction, which restricts root growth, limits nutrient and water uptake and ultimately lowers yield.

For example, researchers at Penn State reported that tires inflated to 100 pounds per square inch created compaction that reduced corn plant height at six weeks after planting by 21% compared to the control (no compaction), reducing grain yield by 11%. See Figure 1. In contrast, the researchers noted that flotation-style tires inflated to 36 psi “helped to reduce the effect of compaction on plant growth” to the extent that the crop height in that treatment was near that of the control.

A 6.3-inch height difference was noted between plants grown in soil with no compaction and in soil compacted by tires inflated at 100 psi. Height in treatments with flotation tires at low pressure was not statistically different from the no-compaction control. Courtesy of news.agcocorp.com

In keeping with the 2020 AGCO Crop Tour goal to demonstrate the effects of and ways to minimize soil compaction at planting, AGCO agronomists have been observing crop development in plots in several states this summer. They recently recorded corn plant heights at growth stages after V12 to compare the compaction effects of various treatments.

In a plot near Casselton, North Dakota, they compared two planter tire-pressure inflation rates: 55 psi, similar to the level for road transport, and automated inflation that maintained tire pressure at approximately 17 psi.

Jason Lee, AGCO agronomist and farm solutions specialist, measured plant height in the rows on either side of the in-line tandem center transport tires of the Fendt Momentum planter at low and high tire inflation pressure. He observed a near 3-inch height advantage in corn planted with very high flexion (VF) tires auto adjusted to maintain a low psi (approx. 17 psi), as opposed to the same tires kept at a constant 55 psi. See Figure 2.

To illustrate the difference in soil compaction at different tire inflation rates, this photo shows the footprints made by the same VF tire at 55 psi on the left and 15 psi on the right, the minimum inflation recommended by the tire manufacturer.

Lee says:

“Note that the length of the footprint increases as tire pressure decreases, reducing pressure applied to the ground and therefore potential surface compaction. A larger footprint reduces the pressure to the soil and therefore lessens the potential for surface compaction damage.”

Evaluating correlation between plant height observations and yield

As the Casselton crop height observation suggests and many additional university studies have shown, tire inflation can make a difference in compaction and resulting plant height. Lee says he looks forward to taking the AGCO Crop Tour plots to harvest to see how final yields match with in-season observations.

Lee also says producers may want to consider lowering the inflation level of tractor and implement tires when possible before starting any field work. He acknowledges, however, that doing so means having an air compressor in the field and time to inflate tires back to road levels before transport, unless the equipment has a central tire inflation system, like VarioGrip on Fendt tractors or the tire inflation system available on the Fendt Momentum planter.
