John Deere offers new Electric Variable Transmission for select 8 Series Tractors, new JD14X engine for 9 Series

John Deere has made updates to its 8 and 9 Series Tractors for the model year 2023 by adding new technology and power. For the largest models of 8 Series Tractors, John Deere is offering a new stepless Electric Variable Transmission (EVT) that enables precise speed control and enhanced drivability. For 9 Series Tractors, the largest models will be powered by the new JD14X (13.6L) diesel engine.

For customers who prefer stepless transmissions for infinite speed control and ease of drivability, the new EVT will be available for all 410-horsepower 8 Series Tractors including 8R, 8RT, and 8RX models.

For MY 23, John Deere 9R 640 and 9RX 640 Tractors will now be powered by the all-new, JD14X diesel engine producing 640-rated horsepower.

“An EVT has electric motors in place of the hydrostatic motors that improve transmission performance, reliability, and increased efficiency. The EVT brings everything customers appreciate from an Infinitely Variable Transmission (IVT), into higher horsepower 8 Series Tractors. Inherently, the electrical components of an EVT are extremely reliable, offer tremendous longevity, and provide better overall tractor control, along with a system built for easy serviceability and diagnostics. In addition, customers will notice an EVT operates more quietly than an IVT.”

said Ryan Jardon, marketing manager for John Deere.

As farmers look to the future, the EVT will likely be the transmission of choice for customers going forward according to Jardon.

“In the future, EVT-equipped 8 Series Tractors, will optionally feature electric power generation capacity of offboarding electricity to power implements. This EVT is the industry’s only transmission that enables electric power generation (up to 100kW). By using this electricity farmers could power implement fan drives, take the place of implement hydraulic pumps, or assist the tractor by powering the implement’s axles. This is similar, to the proven technology John Deere currently uses, on construction equipment.”

Jardon said.

An EVT has electric motors in place of the hydrostatic motors that improve transmission performance, reliability, and increased efficiency.

Agricultural implements with powered axles are already successfully used in Europe to help push the tractor from behind while working in the field.

“EVT technology offboards electricity from the tractor to provide added power to the implement and can reduce wheel slip, improve up-hill performance, and enables the tractor to pull wide implements without the need for extra ballast or a larger tractor,”

Jardon said.

For MY 23, John Deere 9R 640 and 9RX 640 Tractors will now also be powered by the all-new, completely redesigned JD14X diesel engine producing 640-rated horsepower. MY 22 390- to 590-horsepower 9 Series Tractors also use this engine across the entire lineup of 9 Series Tractors, including the 640-horsepower models. Based on internal testing, the JD14X engine in 9R 640 and 9RX 640 Tractors uses 7% less fuel than previous models.

“These new engines were built for outstanding performance, greater reliability and we have made them easier to access and service. The engine features a 500-hour oil change interval, hydraulic fan drive, and a high-pressure common-rail fuel delivery system for increased fuel atomization, efficiency, and power, along with faster start times. Customers told us they appreciate the lugging capabilities the new engine has brought to their 9 Series Tractors.”

Jardon said.

A new stepless Electric Variable Transmission (EVT) will be available for all 410-horsepower 8 Series Tractors including 8R, 8RT and 8RX models.

Steyr Impuls CVT Tractors Gain a Suite of New Features

A host of new and improved features is being introduced to the three-model range of STEYR Impuls CVT tractors, which covers the 165-200hp (maximum) power sector. The upgrades have been developed with the aim of further enhancing the driver experience for operators of these models, and thereby improving productivity, benefiting owners too. The first public viewing will be on the STEYR stand in Hall 5 at Agribex, which takes place from 08-12 Dec at Brussels Expo, Belgium.

Exterior features that promise a premium automotive interior

The changes begin with a completely redesigned cabin entrance area, created for improved ergonomics – easier, quicker, safer entry and exit. New aluminum steps match the tractor’s styling, as do new gas strut covers both for the doors and the rear window. The Impuls CVT is now fitted as standard with two opening doors for convenience when accessing this side of the tractor.

Adjacent to the steps, a vanity cover conceals an additional external battery master switch as well as optional heating sockets and the air-line coupler, which will allow the operator to easily clean both sides of the cab or radiators. A STEYR branding plate complements this new smart design. Night-time entry and exit are also made safer and more welcoming by the addition of high-performance LED ingress lighting.

Other new external features designed to improve operator comfort include improved work light position to aid performance and visibility to implement extremities, and there are new modern-style LED side indicators that are overlaid by the direction indicator lights when engaged. LED beacons, which are foldable to minimize damage risk, are now optionally available.

At the rear of the tractors, top link stability and fixing have been enhanced, and there is now a position indicator to make it easier to quickly fix the top link and check position from the cab. At the top of the rear remote stacks, there is now a rear cover plate that arranges connections in a more ergonomic manner for faster coupling.

Interior features that match up to the promise

Driver comfort has been a core focus in the new Impuls CVT development. Interior surfaces benefit from new materials and enhanced fit and finish, and new Impuls CVT models are the first STEYR tractors with a new premium leather steering wheel. A new low-mount windscreen wiper covers 60% more area, and forward vision is also enhanced by a less-obtrusive rear-view mirror. A new cooled storage compartment keeps operators refreshed, while new premium speakers provide high-quality sound.

To the operator’s right, a new monitor rail incorporates an integrated harness guide and two USB sockets, for convenient mounting and power for implementing monitors and other devices. A dealer-installed kit for a RAM mount tablet holder is optional, and a RAM mount cell phone holder can be factory-specified. Driving control upgrades include a wiper/indicator stalk with a more automotive feel and improved self-cancelling for the indicator function, enhancing safety on the road.

Enhancements to CVT – the mark of Steyr

Larger STEYR tractors have long been synonymous with CVT continuously variable transmission technology. A defining new feature of the latest STEYR Impuls CVT tractors is the ability to further customize transmission settings, to deliver a new driving experience and ensure maximum efficiency, Custom transmission settings now allow operators to adjust, save and recall required vehicle behaviour characteristics based on personal preferences and application requirements, a feature unique to the range.

Meanwhile, Impuls CVT driving behaviour and characteristics have been enhanced in several areas. These include improved acceleration and deceleration behaviour, upgraded shuttle behaviour, greater drive pedal sensitivity, the introduction of a cruise control pedal override feature, and enhanced sensitivity and position detection for the Multicontroller lever, which can be used for CVT operation.

An advanced joystick option, with F/R transmission features, will be available for the new Impuls CVT tractors, allowing drivers to operate key functions and services from the one joystick with fewer hand movements.

TND Steel Disc Couplings with Updated Design Offer Backlash-Free Operation in Drive Applications

Versatile Introduces More Power for 2022

Versatile introduce new DeltaTrack and four-wheel-drive models for 2022. The tractors include more power, improved features, newly available options, and an updated appearance. New models, 530, 580, and 620 have a larger cooling package designed to improve airflow and cooling capacity, improved transmission, and advanced hydraulic configuration and options.

2022 models feature the improved TA22 transmission by Cat. This powershift transmission has less restrictive torque protection in lower gears, a more consistent inching pedal, and increased torque ratings. The clutch capacity has also increased which results in 3% more torque in 3rd gear, 5% more torque in 4th gear, and 10% more torque in 5th gear.

An advanced hydraulic configuration with center located connections, six hydraulic couplers, one ¾ coupler, and a case drain will be included on all new units. Optional features include Power Beyond, two additional ¾ couplers, dual case drains, and a high-flow hydraulic system. This flexible and robust setup puts farmers in control of implement options, specifically enhancing the performance of air drills on Versatile tractors.

All DeltaTrack and four-wheel drive and models include multiple cab improvements. The tractors feature a more comfortable seat, audio system enhancements, and an available 12” monitor. Additional options include dual rotary beacons, cell phone holders, and toolboxes. New LED lighting packages feature almost three times more lumens on the Deluxe Package (than the standard), and more than four times the lumens on the Deluxe Plus Package, which includes 21 lights producing more than 45,000 lumens total. These superior lighting systems allow for longer hours, less fatigue, and better visibility.

An updated decal design and color scheme changes give the tractors a modern and aggressive appearance. The most notable change is the black frame. Versatile’s model year 2022 tractors have been designed to combine power, comfort, and style.

Production of the model year 2022 tractors begins this fall and are available for order now from Versatile dealers. Preview showings are scheduled for the Farm Progress Show (Decatur, Illinois) and Agri-Trade (Red Deer, Alberta).

Kubota Engineeres M5N Tractor Expressively for Vineyards, Orchards and All Other Narrow Farm Environments

Kubota engineered the M5N to specifically work in vineyards, orchards, or anywhere else that might require narrow tractors that feature M-Series power.

Strong heartbeats under the bonnet of the M5001N. The new V-3800 TIE 4F 4-cylinder engine with a 3B emission level provides between 73 and 105 HP (according to 97/68 EC). The models M5071N (73 HP), M5091N (92-93 HP), and M5101N (103-105 HP) are available both as cab tractors as well as DTH tractors (open platform with rollover protection bars). This is made possible by Kubota’s leading position in diesel engine technology. The outstanding reliability, strength, and cleanliness of the engines of the three models will impress you.

The M5071N has a sizeable 3.8 l engine under the bonnet – which is unique in this horsepower class and gives the model the right power for all jobs. The DTH tractors also have a special feature, they actually reach their maximum performance at 2,400 rpm, rather than at 2,600 rpm like the cab tractors. You will surely appreciate the lower noise level.

The diesel particulate filter in the new engine reliably reduces emissions. The two electronic engine settings provide convenient quick adjustments for repetitive work. Which is not only useful but also saves time.

The engines also have a new electronic speed control with which you can control the speed of the engine. Once the RPM mode system has been activated, the speed remains constant, even when the demand for power varies. As a result, PTO-driven implements can be run with constant efficiency. Operations are bound to include a number of recurring tasks, such as certain PTO-driven jobs. That is where the integrated speed memory comes into play. You can call up the respective settings with the push of a button, and you’re ready to go, without any further adjustments.

The M5001N provides a further innovation when it comes to the fuel tank: Instead of three tanks, like its predecessors, it has only two large tanks on the bottom side of the cab. This provides not only more capacity and thus longer usage times, but also higher tank comfort. The tank of the DTH tractors holds 76 l and is therefore even bigger than the previous versions. An additional plus: The new tank design gives you better visibility towards the rear, as a rear tank is not required. And since there are two tanks instead of three, the fuel gauge is also more accurate.

Narrow enough to work between vines and powerful enough to be part of the M-Series line-up

The Czech Zetor Crystal HD Updated With a New Engine and New Cabin Features

This year, the award-winning Crystal HD is launched in a modernized version with a number of functional innovations, while retaining the attributes for which it has gained popularity with customers not only in the Czech and Slovak markets.

The new machine brings customers a number of improvements compared to the previous model. It is equipped with an economical six-cylinder Deutz TCD 6.1 L6 engine with a maximum power output of 171 HP. The engine meets the latest EU Stage V emission standards and thus does not burden the environment with excess pollutants. At the same time, it retains the operational and economic parameters of the previous generation.

However, the biggest changes took place in the cabin. We heard the wishes and needs of customers and together with them we brought a number of improvements that will further increase the comfort of the machine. The completely new roof based on Zetor by Pininfarina design study offers an even better view on the front loader thanks to its indented shape and new sunroof. In addition, it already meets the FOPS (Falling Object Protection Structure) as a standard.

Crystal is also equipped with a new controller for work lights and beacons control. It includes a number of advanced functions such as automatic activation of work lights according to the selected direction of travel or a memory function. The machine has a LED package with 4 roof lights and 2 spotlights, which can be expanded with another 4 LED roof lights as an option.

Other innovations include improved plastic technology which ensures higher temperature resistance and UV stability of the material. In addition, the tractor is equipped with a completely new air conditioning and heating system, which offers a significant improvement in their performance.

Of course, the tractor also features a suspended front axle, a multifunctional right panel with electronically controlled hydraulic sections, a three-point hitch with a maximum lifting force of up to 85 kN and an ECO 40 transmission allowing to operate at a maximum speed of 40 km/h at an economical 1750 rpm.

Zetor Crystal offers enough power to work with medium-sized aggregations in demanding conditions and is a reliable partner for customers in animal and plant production or for contractors.

Baumer Hübner aims at precision and reliability

Tacho generators in drives of mountain railways and ski lifts are exposed to enormous strain. Nevertheless, they must perform for precise and reliable speed measurement. This is why manufacturers rely on HeavyDuty solutions from Baumer Hübner. What does it take for a tacho generator to withstand the rough conditions on snow-covered mountains?

Every day and for many years, the cable railway traveling in the Tyrolean Alps to the top of Zugspitze has been carrying hundreds of people to an altitude of 2,964 metres. At a speed of 10 metres per second, the trip takes about seven and a half minutes, powered by two electric motors of 500 kW. In the driver’s cab, control of the current motor status – slow, idle, forward, reverse, accelerate, high-speed and brake – requires a high level of accuracy and reliability by the speed control system. After all, passenger comfort and safety are first.

However, the components in mountain railways are exposed to harsh conditions: wind, rain and snow shape the ambience, temperatures range from double-digit minus degrees in winter to high plus degrees in summer. Mechanical robustness of course is key. Robust housings with solid walls are a good start, so TDP 0.2 LT comes in a die-cast aluminium housing and with stainless steel shaft. But also the interior must be protected against shocks and vibration. TDP 0.2 LT with bearings at both shaft ends is capable of enduring high radial and axial shaft load.

HeavyDuty tacho generators must withstand dust, dirt and moisture which requires a sufficient level of tightness. For this reason, the HeavyDuty housing is well sealed, especially at critical, neuralgic points – shaft and electrical connections. In addition, appropriate materials and coatings protect against corrosion by salt water or chemicals.

Tacho generators do not integrate electronics and therefore are extremely durable against harmful impacts by electromagnetic fields. So, nothing stands in the way for routing live, unshielded cables nearby. Furthermore, shaft currents induced by voltage differences might burn the bearing lubrication which results into bearing destruction. The electrically insulated interior of HeavyDuty tacho generators is therefore well protected against such harmful influences.

Last but not least, precision is another valuable virtue of these HeavyDuty heavy weights. Tacho generators must deliver reliable signals at all times to ensure precise drive control and regulation. Based on the speed information, the controller can identify any drive speed deviation and will intervene. HeavyDuty tacho generators in heavy vehicles such as mountain railways must be as precise as smaller speed sensors. It is not without reason that TDP 0.2 LT is field-tested and extremely reliable. It delivers a 60V output signal already at 1000 rpm; at the maximum operating speed of 10,000 rpm the controller is even provided with up to 600V.

High-precision tachometer voltage throughout the entire speed range

The conventional combination of copper commutator and graphite brushes in tacho generators has long been outdated. The copper oxide layers on the commutator cause irregular transition resistance and thus high ripple in tachometer voltage, so low speed would not be accurately detected. However, graphite with good sliding properties ensures a long brush service life. The combination of copper commutator and silver graphite brushes is much more appropriate for low speed detection, since precious metal brushes apply a highly conductive “patina” to the commutator. However, this solution is sensitive to adverse ambient conditions such as oil, grease or air containing sulphur and salt. Under such conditions no patina would build up and the said good transmission properties would be lost over the entire speed range. In addition, there is increased wear because the metal-containing brushes run directly on the copper layer.

LongLife® is what Baumer Hübner calls their tachometer technology patented in 1987 which combines the positive of above procedures and eliminates the drawbacks. In a special process and depending on the tacho variant, Baumer Hübner embeds one or two massive silver tracks into the commutator surface. The track can be very fine thanks to relatively minor tacho currents. TDP 0.2 LT features even two silver tracks. This ensures permanent low contact resistance even under difficult conditions. And it allows for a 60 mV/min-1 voltage constant of TDP 0.2 LT resulting in a wide detectable speed range from ≤ 0.08 to 10,000 min-1, with both mechanically and electrically limited maximum speed. TDP 0.2 LT therefore provides a dynamic range of 1 : 125,000. The brushes especially modified by Baumer Hübner together, with the LongLife commutator ensure maintenance-free service life that even will exceed that of the ball bearings.

LongLife® even for ski lifts

Ski lifts carrying millions of skiers to mountain peaks every year have likewise tough requirements on drive control. Here too, to ensure passenger safety manufacturers rely on tacho generators that have proven themselves in many applications. They ensure reliable equipment functionality even during severe frost, snowfall and icy winds. Today, speed-controlled drives are also common in ski lifts for smooth starts and variable travel speed. For decades, lift manufacturers have been deploying analog tacho generators by Baumer Hübner such as GMP 1.0. The tacho generator is directly connected to the slowly rotating cable wheel via step-up converter and chain wheel drive. This way, dead speed in the motor gearbox is isolated from the control loop and generates sufficient speed signals even under harsh ambient conditions. The GMP 1.0 also features two silver tracks for permanent low contact resistance and thus a widely detectable speed range with good transmission quality of measured values. The robust design and standard temperature compensation make the tacho generator ideal for use in the harsh conditions of snow-covered mountains.
