From March 2022, the Lemken Heliodor compact disc harrow will be available with a preparation set for attaching a Vogelsang DosiMat DMX precision spreader. The resulting powerful combination of two proven implements is ideal for the precise low-loss spreading and incorporation of liquid organic fertilizers such as slurry.

The Heliodor offers a sound basis for this type of application, as it is compact and low-draught and therefore only places little additional demands on the tractor’s lifting and traction powers. The DosiMat DMX is renowned for its very even transverse and longitudinal distribution, which is consistently maintained even at extremely low and extremely high application rates.

The way the two implements work together is very simple: Slurry is fed into the DosiMat from above, homogenized inside the device by a flow-optimized rotor equipped with cutting blades, and then pushed into the individual outlets. Fiber and foreign matter are reliably shredded in the process – this enables the desired precise distribution and helps to avoid disruptive blockages. The slurry then passes via hoses to the area behind the first row of discs on the Heliodor, where it is injected into the soil and immediately incorporated by the second row of discs and the trailing roller without any delay.

In terms of economy, the Heliodor/DosiMat duo is exactly in line with current trends. With rising prices for mineral fertilizers, many farmers want to utilize the nutrients stored in their slurry. This is achieved through precise application and immediate incorporation while minimizing nitrogen losses, making the process not only extremely economical but also compliant with water protection requirements.

Liquid manure serves as an important agricultural fertilizer and contributes significantly to
plant growth and thus to the success of farmers in the fields. For more than 25 years, Fliegl has been manufacturing manure distributors equipped with an in-house developed screw conveyor for application close to the ground.

The trailing shoe spreader “Skate” has been on the market since 2016 and is available in working widths of 6 m, 7.5 m, 9 m, 12 m, 15 m, 18 m, 21 m, and 24 m. A test by the DLG (German Agricultural Society) proves that years of experience in the field of application technology have a very positive effect on practical use.

The Fliegl Skate 120 is a trailing shoe spreader with a working width of twelve meters. Thanks to the sophisticated design of frame and applicator, the “Skate” is a true lightweight construction with its 1,300 kg. Nevertheless, it impresses with an extremely robust and durable structure.

The application of liquid manure inevitably results in emissions because the ammonium
nitrogen contained in the liquid manure is converted into gaseous ammonia when it comes
into contact with air.

This needs to be prevented as far as possible because this nutrient is an important factor for plant growth. In order to avoid emissions as best as possible, an application close to the ground is essential. Short discharge hoses and a colter pressure of 8 kg, as well as spring-loaded shoes, ensure optimal conditions during manure driving and an exact application of the manure close to the ground. With the “Skate”, in flat regions as well as in mountainous areas, Fliegl focuses on agricultural success through technical innovations.

On the slope, the “Skate” impresses with the slope compensation it is equipped with as a standard. This ensures an equal manure spreading also on uneven surfaces. Furthermore, the Skate enables good tramline management and precise application at field boundaries thanks to the optional individual hose shut-off for the outlets. Either mechanical or hydraulic section control is optionally available for the Skate 120.

The screw conveyor contributes to the decisive advantage of the “Skate”. The principle is simple: The “Skate” 120 has 24 hose outlets on each side, each having a diameter of 40 mm. The distance between the hoses is 25 cm. The augers prevent these outlets from becoming blocked.

The control changes the direction of rotation at short intervals. The augers rotate outwards for about 20 seconds to remove foreign objects such as wood and ear tags. Then they are turned backward for about five seconds in order to remove coarse residues from the holes of the hose outlets. Two of these screw conveyors are installed in the tested Skate 120.

At the end of the applicator, there is a storage box with a brass gate valve that can be
opened mechanically or hydraulically if required. The foreign bodies are collected in these
storage boxes which are then emptied by the driver.

With the TWIN nozzle, Fliegl offers a good solution for those who fear forage contamination from liquid manure bands in the field. The reduction of the distance between the manure bands to 125mm increases the substrate infiltration. The TWIN nozzles ensure an optimal work result in terms of lateral and longitudinal distribution.

Simple and convenient handling is important in order to avoid operating errors and to be
able to employ changing drivers without long training periods. Here, the drag shoe distributor impresses with its “Easy” control, which can optionally also be operated via ISOBUS. With the help of three attached angle sensors, the folding of the distributor’s arms is monitored in every position, which enables dampened folding even on slopes. To unfold, the distributor lifts out of the transport lock, folds the distributor arms back, and then lowers into the working position. This is done by using the automatic folding mechanism.

Then, the discharge slide is opened using the automatic discharge control and the augers
start to work. The automatic headland control switches off the augers close the slide and
fold up the distributor, which prevents liquid manure from dripping.

Maintenance, which is also important for successfully working with the “Skate”, is easy
due to the good accessibility of the four lubrication points. In general, the trailing shoe
distributor is very user-friendly. The outlet hoses do not kink thanks to the special folding
mechanism. Furthermore, the Skate has an already integrated overpressure protection
and many other impressive technical details.

You are always safe in road transport with the “Skate”. The transport width is extremely
compact at 2600 mm at the bottom and 2300 mm at the top. The trailing shoe distributor
also impresses due to its very low height.

2021 marks the 25th consecutive year that Koller Craft, LLC and Agri-Fab, Inc. have worked together to produce equipment that the agriculture industry utilizes on a daily basis. Agri-Fab, a manufacturer of lawn and garden attachments, has teamed up with Koller Craft to create parts for its spreaders and hoppers that many people have relied on for years.

One of the oldest plastic molders in the Midwest, Koller Craft uses injection molding for various parts for spreaders and hoppers, coming in different sizes and colors—black, orange and green. Throughout the last quarter-century, Koller Craft has used its injection molding on poly cart trays, dust covers, sweeper housing and gears, among other industry parts.

To manufacture some of these parts, Koller Craft uses High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), which provides tensile strength, a large strength-to-density ratio, high-impact resistance and a high melting point. Other parts are manufactured with Polypropylene (PP Copolymer). This is more flexible than HDPE and retains its shape after torsion, bending and flexing.

When plastic is used to manufacture these parts, it holds up to the tough environment the end product is earmarked for. Plastic can tolerate exposure to chemicals, ultraviolet rays and moisture that causes metals to oxidize and rust. It will flex when needed and will not scratch or dent like metal can.

Plastic can also be a more cost-effective option than metal. The ability to consolidate multiple parts into one piece eliminates the need for secondary options and keeps costs down. Resin, used during plastic molding, also delivers lower material costs than metal.

Another benefit of plastic is it allows for flexibility in the design and manufacturing process. Metal parts often require welding, grinding, die work, bending and rework on each individual part in order to achieve the design specifications. With plastic, these secondary steps are often included in the manufacturing tool and allows for the injection molded part to come out complete. The part can also have color and texture added to it, eliminating the need to paint or decorate the part.

After 25 years, the relationship between Koller Craft and Agri-Fab remains as strong as the millions of parts they have manufactured together. These two manufacturers plan on continuing to collaborate for many years to come.

Running 500 acres, he prefers to invest in his own field equipment for independence and flexibility rather than rely on custom applicators for fertilizer and spraying.

Over the years, Elliot has become a loyal customer, purchasing Salford tillage machines to manage his field work. He says he’s been happy with his I-1200 and I-5100 machines, reporting their field performance measures up to his expectations and deliver his ideal field finish. Elliot’s experience with Salford equipment meant he had high expectations when he invested in a BBI Liberty.

“I saw a model at a local farm show and knew it was what I was looking for – stainless steel with simple drive components and a roll-top cover,” he says. “I was looking for something to stand up to the harsh wear and tear fertilizer causes on a spreader and was happy to find the Liberty unit.”

Getting Started

Spring 2020 was the first year Elliot operated his new fertilizer spreader. And while he was pleased with the unit’s performance, he had to work out a few kinks first. Like any new machine, it took some field time to get his spreader working to his standards.

“My local Salford territory manager was on hand to help set up the spreader from the start, he was able to set my desired fertilizer spread pattern and was on hand for any questions or follow up concerns.”

Salford’s service commitment came through for Elliot last spring as he placed some follow up calls to Hank, his local territory manager. Together, they resolved some minor concerns to make sure the machine was performing up to Elliot’s standards.

“The machine works great, the Liberty is part of my fleet and I expect it will stay in my equipment lineup for rest of my farming career,”

says Elliot, noting one of the biggest benefits of the machine is its ideal size for his fields and nutrient application requirements.

The name of the machine, Liberty, is a reflection of its break through design that no longer restricts general broadcast application, but rather a more targeted, precise nutrient application. “Fertilizer is important, but it’s hard to tell just what difference it makes on yield and crop quality at harvest time, especially on rented land,”

says Elliott.

It can be hard to measure fertilizer performance, especially when it comes to assessing the impact of application, but Elliot believes he’s seen a difference in using the Liberty spreader after just one growing season. He includes flexibility and convenience as performance measurements in his operation.

The floor chains in muck spreaders convey the material towards the rotors and require a constant and even feed to ensure all the load is spread accurately. All leading manufactures now use heavy-duty, mining conveyor chain systems which are far superior to the early lightweight, flat link agricultural chain systems of the past.

Traditionally the market saw larger “trailer type” 2m wide muck spreaders designed using single floor chain systems, but when a large amount of material was tipped into them it did not support the floor well and it would bow and eventually stove in, impinging the conveyor system. The twin floor chain system naturally gives a more robust floor slat, but permits support to the center of the spreader floor.

Ktwo muck spreaders have a flared body throughout which gives an increased volume capacity but also allows a stronger floor design. By starting to taper from the floor, the innovative design acts as a funnel to help move materials down to the chains increasing volume and allowing for easier emptying with less bridging. Even with the central gap between the two chain systems, the nature of the manure itself ensures complete emptying of the spreader.

Ashley Knibb, Ktwo Senior Design Engineer explains:

“A single chain is a simple system that allows for easier slat bending and requires a bigger and more clumsy chain to achieve the required pulling capacity. And suffers from inherently more chain wear on the gearbox drive side”,

As observed over the years by Stewart Freeman Ktwo Service and Parts Manager.

“Spreading the load” across a twin system with four chains and two runs of slats means it is not imposing such a big load onto the slats, a smaller more compact chain can be used and the floor is supported better.

With the exception of the Ktwo Bio which has more slats to give a very accurate rotor feed, Ktwo models have staggered chains to further help feed the rotors and ensure an even output and accurate coverage of the looser, lighter product, which is especially noticeable when spreading high-value materials such as lime with the use of the slurry door to meter the load.

Ktwo muck spreaders include a sprocketed front roller with integral cleaning scrapers. This gives positive engagement with the chain ensuring the chains remain timed and aligned, with a consistent flow of material and preventing the chain derailing should a foreign object get into the drive roller, thus every slat bending if one should fail.

Another consideration is the difference between the use of a bearing or composite bush. Ktwo has always fitted high-quality ball flange bearings which are self-aligning allowing accurate individual chain tension and high-pressure bearings which are much more resilient to wear out. The composite bush produces resistance with its thin wall and its friction contact when under heavy load, unlike the ball flange bearing which eliminates this.

“A single slat system has a no-tool change design. These are a loose fit and then wear and become covered in the product and corrode. This system also eventually corrodes solid. We often have customers comment on our four chain design, on its ease to maintain because they can get their tools in and around it and it is simple to remove bolts and slats no matter how worn and embedded they get.’’

In addition to liquid manure, many farmers also use solid manure for organic fertilization. Fliegl has therefore expanded its spreading technology product portfolio to include chain manure spreaders. The first model type could already be seen at Agritechnica 2019. Since then there has been a lot of tinkering, development, and testing so that the KDS spreader, from small to large, is now ready for the organic nutrient transfer. A DLG test of the “KDS 270 Muck Control Tandem” proves its ability in black and white.

The Fliegl KDS 270 Muck Control is a universal spreader with a scraper floor and a horizontal 2-disc spreader. The loading space of the KDS 270 with a height of 1.4 m, a width of 2.15 m, and a length of 7 m have an enormous capacity of around 21 m³. The load compartment with sidewalls and floor made of fine-grain steel sits on a tandem chassis consisting of a hollow beam frame. Both materials are extremely stable and yet light. The mechanical suspension of the axles as well as the hydraulically sprung drawbar with a pivotable drawbar ensure a high level of driving comfort and practicality.

In order to be able to fulfill the wishes of all customers, Fliegl now offers its KDS not only the tried and tested push-off technology but also a scraper floor as the feeding technology. It consists of two chains with 140 chain links each. Each individual chain link has a breaking load of 50 t. The chains connect 41 continuously closed scraper floor strips. The scraper floor is driven hydraulically via a side gear and the speed can be continuously adjusted. If the chains lose their tension over time, a mechanical or optionally hydraulic chain tensioner ensures easy maintenance.

The loading area is separated from the spreading unit by a hydraulic feed control valve. In order to guarantee an optimal sealing, it has an internal frame guide. The opening position can be adjusted continuously on the control terminal. The driver conveniently receives information about the opening width of the gate valve via the fill level indicator on the front wall of the spreader.

Right after the feed control gate are two horizontal spreader rollers with a diameter of 770 mm, each. These ensure optimal mixing, loosening, and dosing of the spreading material. Easy maintenance is guaranteed by exchangeable blades. If something should spread inside, the system automatically switches off thanks to electronic speed monitoring when the roller speed is reduced.

The heart of the KDS 270 Muck Control is the VarioSPLASH disc spreading unit with two large spreading discs having a diameter of 1100 mm. Each spreading disc is made of wear-resistant HB 400 steel and equipped with six swiveling spreading vanes. Depending on the spreading material, individual settings can be made on the disc spreader. On the one hand, all blades can be manually adjusted to three different swivel angles. On the other hand, the point of application of the spreading material on the spreading discs can be varied using the spreading flap. The KDS can thus be optimally adapted to different circumstances.

The spreading rate is determined by the feeding rate of the scraper floor, the opening width of the gate, and the driving speed of the tractor. The entire spreading mechanism of the Fliegl KDS 270 Muck Control is driven by the PTO shaft via an oil bath gear. A special transfer case ensures an optimized distribution of power to the spreading discs and rollers. For three days, tests were carried out on the company’s own standardized test rig at the Mühldorf plant. For the DLG test, four spreading materials, dry chicken manure, digestate, manure, and compost were examined in various amounts. The test is based on the DLG test framework “Spreader for organic solids”, which had recently been tightened by 5% in all categories.

The coefficients of variation determined for evaluating the lateral distribution are below 20% for all four spreading materials and are evaluated as good (+) for manure and compost for both application rates. The lateral distribution of chicken manure is rated very good (++) at a working width of 12 meters and rated passed (o) at 22 meters. In the case of digestate, the lateral distribution is rated very well (++) for an application rate of 5 t /
ha and the associated working width of 16 meters and good (+) for 30 t / ha and a working
width of 20 meters.

These mostly very good and good results of the Fliegl KDS 270 muck control are honored
by the DLG with the test mark, DLG Approved. Fliegl is proud to have manufactured a first-class product with the KDS 270 Muck Control and is pleased to be able to offer it to farmers and contractors.
