SenseApply Camera Unit

IntelliSense Sprayer Automation uses a single cab-mounted, factory-fit SenseApply Camera unit.

The SenseApply camera unit is a forward-looking, multi-spectral vision system that enables IntelliSense Sprayer Automation to continuously scan upcoming field conditions (50 feet out in front of the sprayer) across the full width of the boom from a high vantage point atop the cab. The result: an expanded vision of the field that generates quicker and longer leading assessments, allowing the operator to drive and apply accurately at a faster speed than any other sense and act technology on the market today.

Selective Spray Function

The leading aspect of the new IntelliSense Sprayer Automation is its Selective Spray function. It offers operators the choice of two application types to enhance herbicide applications: Spot Spraying and Base + Boost.

Spot Spraying utilizes green-on-brown functionality and operates by detecting weeds smaller in stature (less than two inches in height) and activates nozzles on the boom that correspond to the location of the detected weed.

Where an operator is applying a broadcast herbicide over a field, Base + Boost mode applies a uniform base rate across the entire coverage width and activates a localized boost rate from nozzles where weeds are detected. When the SenseApply camera identifies a weed, IntelliSense Sprayer Automation boosts the maximum application rate for that single weed within the herbicide’s prescription rate range.

These two operations offer farmers enhanced capabilities to utilize their herbicide application: the ability to apply a broadcast herbicide to knock out smaller weeds and a prescription rate to manage larger weeds. Within both Selective Spray modes, the operator can alter sensitivity and coverage area. This means the operator can adjust the system’s responsiveness to weed size based on a scale of small, medium or high and the target application area where a weed is detected.

Other Functions

Beyond Selective Spray, IntelliSense Sprayer Automation bolsters its capabilities with a range of full-season live variable rate application functions that further elevate a sprayer’s productivity, utility and overall operating ROI. Functions include nitrogen variable rate application (VRA), plant growth regulator VRA, fungicide VRA, harvest aid VRA and burndown VRA. These functions operate by automatically adjusting the amount of each input applied (nitrogen, PGR, fungicide, harvest aid and burndown) based on detected biomass health levels.

To further in-field productivity, a Guardian front boom sprayer actively engaging one of the VRA functions can operate at speeds up to 25 mph. If Selective Spray is in active use, the sprayer can run at speeds up to 19 mph. This is an industry-leading speed range that ensures sprayer operators can maintain a high level of in-field performance and quality of application to maximize every ounce of input running through the boom.

Currently, IntelliSense Sprayer Automation can be used on a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, wheat, barley, canola, cotton, small grains, edible beans and other legumes.

Productivity Enhanced

IntelliSense Sprayer Automation can create cost savings for applicators by enabling more efficient applications. In 2024, Kansas State University and CNH partnered to conduct field trials evaluating the performance of IntelliSense Sprayer Automation’s nitrogen VRA function in corn. The findings: ~10 percent savings in applied nitrogen compared to a constant broadcast rate. Contributing to this result is the system’s nitrogen VRA function, which can identify and automatically apply the most appropriate amount of nitrogen within the prescribed rate range according to the assessed plant biomass health.

“If that crop has already met its potential and an operator is broadcast applying, they’re wasting that nitrogen application. With IntelliSense Sprayer Automation we can turn the level of applied nitrogen down or up based on what that crop might need. We’re analyzing and nurturing individual plants now versus taking a wide brush to everything in the field to more efficiently and effectively use our crop inputs and those precious budgets.”

The nitrogen use efficiency of IntelliSense Sprayer Automation creates financial savings but also extends the activity of that sprayer tank, allowing the operator to not have to stop and fill up as frequently. Considering the Kansas State University research, a 1,600-gallon sprayer tank now becomes, in theory, a 1,700+ gallon sprayer tank.

John Deere Production Systems Manager, Ben Kelly, said the transformational system, which activates individual spray nozzles when target weeds are “seen” by boom-mounted cameras, could reduce postemergence herbicide use by more than 50%.

“Australian customers have already seen first-hand See & Spray Select’s ability to substantially reduce herbicide use and spearhead input cost savings for targeted spraying on fallow ground,”

Mr Kelly said.

“See & Spray Premium is a green-on-green solution that is the next evolution of See & Spray technology, and its availability on Hagie STS sprayers means more contractors and growers will have access to one of the world’s most powerful tools available for maximising cost-efficiency and in-field productivity in corn, soybean and cotton crops.”

Marked reduction in herbicide use

See & Spray Premium uses its system of boom-mounted cameras to scan more than 195 square metres of crop per second as the sprayer is in motion, with on-board processors determining whether an individual plant is crop or weed. Those processors send commands to individual ExactApply nozzles, which deliver a precise dose of herbicide only to the weed.

“In addition to a marked decrease in herbicide use, this technology also reduces required water stops, while supporting increased efficiency and better yield. It is also a powerful channel to accurately and easily collect and document information to help growers make management decisions based on real on-farm data.”

Mr Kelly said.

In combination with John Deere Operations Center, the system gathers data from each application.

“After spraying, application data is sent to John Deere Operations Center where growers and their agronomists can view layered maps showing where individual inputs were applied, while the chemical savings are compared to a broadcast application,”

Mr Kelly said.

Improving the operator experience

In addition to See & Spray Premium, model year 2025 Hagie STS sprayers will be available with the John Deere G5^PLUS display and integrated StarFire 7500 receiver, enabling the use of the most advanced John Deere guidance, documentation and automation products while offering a larger, faster, higher-definition operator interface.

“The faster processor in the display can import and export large guidance files in half the time of previous displays, and gives faster boot times, while the integrated StarFire 7500 receiver with optional SF-RTK offers greater accuracy and repeatability, so boundaries and lines don’t shift from season to season,” Mr Kelly said.

With input costs rising and margins shrinking, See & Spray Premium is positioned to be a genuine game-changer for contractors and growers who need to make the most of their time and chemical investment.

“See & Spray is the most impactful product developed by John Deere in 80 years of self-propelled sprayers, and we’re proud to continue our history of bringing intelligent, class-leading solutions to industry,” Mr Kelly said.

“While See & Spray Premium is not yet available locally, we understand the demand for this technology in Australia and the value it will deliver when available.

“That’s why we are working to apply See & Spray Premium to additional sprayer platforms and provide more sprayer configurations and compatibility for Australian growers when it is launched here.”

The blade on the updated cutter head contacts the corn sooner to improve cut quality compared to previous models. The cutter head deck is shallower than previous models with improved cutter head crop flow for high-quality cutting at high speeds.

A QuickTach option on the cutter and puller heads is now offered making it possible to quickly change over from cutter to puller attachments by simply removing two locking pins on each head. Mark is thrilled to have chosen a Hustler Applic8r mounted boom sprayer a few months ago and thinks it’s a “wonderful machine”. Mark farms on 5,500 effective hectares with about 46,000 stock units comprised of sheep, cattle and deer.

Is this technology right for everyone? Not necessarily. Studies have shown smaller, relatively flat fields with a uniform soil type often have a consistent distribution of nutrients. A straight rate application is just as effective at getting the right nutrients applied as a variable rate machine in these situations. However, many farms in Ontario have at least some rolling ground and can be challenged with several soil types in one field.

Ontario farmer Tony DeBruyn works his own land and does some custom work on corn, soy and occasionally some wheat in Chatham-Kent. DeBruyn’s work area includes some rolling fields near Lake Erie. To maximize his yields in the area they farm DeBruyn has been using variable rate application for some time.

“We don’t look to variable rate for cost savings in fertilizer,”

says DeBruyn.

“It’s the matter of putting the product where it’s needed. We looked at variable rate when it first came out. The co-op we work with would take soil samples.”

And naturally, they thought that more fertilizer should be put on the poorer soils. However, that’s not the case.

“We found that our poorer soils can only produce so much. The better soils are really able to increase yields with the proper nutrients applied.”

Along with focusing on fertilizer where it’s needed to maximize yields, Debruyn is also concerned about his environmental impact.

“We’re near Lake Erie, and we’re concerned about algae blooms and what regulations the government may come with regards to fertilizer application. We decided we want to put our fertilizer where it’s going to be the most beneficial. That way, we’re increasing yields and creating less runoff with the fertilizer.”

Continuing on his goal to improve application methods on his land, and through custom work, DeBruyn has spent the last five years researching the variable-rate blends. Tony is looking to apply this research with an applicator that could meet his needs.

Tony has purchased one of Salford’s BBI MagnaSpread3, multi-product spinner spreaders. DeBruyn’s Salford spreader is capable of creating a blend of three fertilizers at once and varying the application rate for each product on the fly to match the prescription that he’s had created based on soil sampling. The spreader is ISOBUS compatible, allowing him to keep using the same GreenStarTM 2360 terminal that he uses for other precision operations on his farm. Application equipment that is ISOBUS compatible allows one terminal move between the tractors and control various implements. Although ISOBUS isn’t foolproof compatibility, depending on firmware versions and terminal “unlocks”, the fact remains that using one control terminal across multiple implements is the best way to maximize the farm’s investment in precision controls.

When asked about the learning curve to setup his new spreader for multi-product, variable rate application DeBruyn said he was nervous at first but when he got his machine and was impressed with how easy it was to get started. Having individual scale kits on the separate hoppers helped make calibration easier.

“We were surprised with how easily the GreenStarTM connected to and controlled the spreader. With one person, it took about 30 minutes to calibrate it, and with two people you could do it in less time.”

DeBruyn emphasized that variable rate application requires precision. Consistent soil sampling is important to build the prescription maps. Also, spreader calibration and knowing the density of the product you’re spreading is essential for accurate, uniform application. DeBruyn says in his operation, they will double-check the product density when they notice the material consistency change, even if it’s coming from the same truckload of fertilizer. This ensures they have accurate applications.
