Merlo TF50.8 in bale handling for compost

Ever since its first telescopic handlers in the 1980s, Merlo has always aimed at the versatility of its ranges. The bright green telehandlers, among other products, have become so widespread thanks to the Cuneo-based company’s ability to communicate the value of its equipment. In fact, Merlo telehandlers are used in a wide variety of applications due to their ability to carry out jobs that other machines would not be able to perform. All this, of course, with a high level of efficiency. This is why AGRIFUNG based in Trevignano (TV), Italy, decided to buy a Merlo TF50.8T-170.
In fact, the company relied on dealer Abramo Mason srl with whom it has been working for several years. The TF50.8 is a telescopic handler whose task is to take care of the logistics of compost formation for mushroom beds. This is a long process made up of various phases in which straw, chicken dung, and horse manure are skillfully processed to obtain the precious component required for growing ‘champignon’ mushrooms. This virtuous process is where the advantages of the Merlo TF50.8 provide important added value to productivity and business efficiency. The lifting capacity and agility in narrow spaces ensure that each stage of the process can be completed by simply changing equipment. Compact size and optimal all-round visibility provide high operational safety. The ability to move around and inside the sheds for compost handling is an important operational aspect. Agrifung, specialists for specialists since 1969.

Agrifung is based in Trevignano, near Treviso, Italy. Since 1969, the company has been producing compost for growing ‘champignon’ mushrooms using a controlled process. Straw, horse manure, and chicken dung are used to make compost that becomes the substrate for the growth of the valuable mushrooms. The Merlo TF50.8 is an integral part of the process, immersing the straw bales in black water. At the end of the immersion period, the bales are stacked in an area where fermentation begins. All the water resulting from the process is channeled into a closed circuit to be oxygenated and used several times without impacting the surrounding environment.
The bales ferment naturally for a set period of time, after which the Merlo TF50.8 removes them and brings them to the shredding machine. Both the stacking and the subsequent pick-up are possible thanks to the load capacity and the maximum height that can be reached. In fact, the Merlo telehandler has a fundamental feature that sets it apart from its direct competitors in the same class: it has a load diagram that provides maximum capacity at maximum height. This allows it to operate in complete safety in any operating context.

Agrifung and Merlo, significant figures
Agrifung’s production achieved significant figures placing the Trevignano-based company in a leading position in the market. Both the Merlo TF50.8 and a P38.12 stabilized telehandler, which is used for maintenance operations, operate within the production site. The latter machine was also supplied by dealer Abramo Mason srl.
This machine is in fact equipped with an aerial work platform for working at height, an approved hook for lifting and handling, and other equipment for replacing plant parts. These are two machines that, thanks to their versatility, allow Agrifung to be continuously efficient. The “Francescutti method” used for growing mushrooms in fact requires a continuous flow of material in the company’s production, a demanding work pace that requires reliable machines. The Merlo TF50.8 meets Agrifung’s requirements by operating alongside large wheel loaders at the same operational pace with the same degree of reliability.

Pallet handling:

Material handling:

Machinery maintenance:

For the maintenance of buildings and structures, Merlo offers a wide range of platforms: pivoting, extensible, front-opening, panel-laying, with an articulated telescopic boom. Construction works:
The Merlo range is the construction equipment par excellence, ideal for handling, transporting and lifting both loads and people. It can replace forklifts, aerial work platforms and cranes. Equipped with a concrete mixer, it can also be used to place concrete at height.

]]> The ideal machine is one that can handle everything. This is what Merlo’s Panoramic 40.14 Plus can do. In fact, depending on the equipment assembled, it is able to tackle any situation.

It was 1955 when Giulio Cestonato, after finishing his studies as a foreman, started his construction activity, initially focussing on small construction works. These events took place at a very favourable time. In fact, in the 1960s the economy was booming, which accelerated the growth of the company both in terms of collaborators and types of work performed.

This was followed by the company’s specialisation in civil construction, still the main focus of the business today under the guidance of Giulio’s children, Roberto, Gianluigi and Sabrina. Under their guidance, the company, which is based in Soave (VR), also supported the construction of new projects with redevelopment and renovation works, especially in the historic centres, and had 9 employees.

A story made up of experience, quality and innovation, which in the 1980s intertwined with that of another large Italian company which as fate would have it, had the same guiding principles: Merlo.

The fateful meeting

The first Merlo machine purchased by Cestonato was a CEM forklift. This is a forerunner of what would later become the journey taken by the Piedmontese manufacturer, namely the design of telehandlers. A journey undertaken by Amilcare Merlo at a time when the very concept of a telehandler did not exist. But this is another story, which Merlo may tell you in the future. Let’s go back to Cestonato.

Today the CEM is no longer part of the fleet. In fact, it has been donated to an association operating in Africa, where it appears to be still operating. Cestonato, on the other hand, turned its attention to telehandlers and purchased their first P30.13, followed over the years by the P35.13.

“Due to our construction sites often having little space and needing to carry out multiple activities, Merlo are always looking for machines which are both compact and versatile. In fact, the one delivered in early July, the brand new P40.14 Plus, is the third telehandler by the Venetian company, which replaces the previous P30.13 purchased in 1996.

Merlo have decided to purchase the new Panoramic to meet the specific needs of our restructuring and redevelopment activities. In recent years, Merlo have found that the use of the platform, is now essential for these activities. However, our fleet didn’t have any, so Merlo were forced to rent one. In the end, Merlo considered it more profitable to include in our fleet a machine that also featured a platform. That’s what Merlo did. Thanks to the P40.14 Plus Merlo are now completely autonomous also with regard to the lifting of personnel at height”.

Roberto and Gianluigi explain.

The Cestonato brothers have opted for an slewing platform, the leading model of the Merlo range, able to accommodate 3 people and carry 300 kg at maximum height. The hollow profiles and non-slip aluminium floor give this carriage the perfect combination of structure lightness, the versatility of a hydraulic rotation system and the safety of an automatic load detection device (with movement blockage in case of exceeding the expected limit). The vehicle itself was enhanced thanks to the highest level of technology guaranteed in terms of efficiency, performance and versatility of use by Plus models.

2020 is no exception, this year Merlo’s evolution continues and has led to the development of the first electric off-road telehandler: the e-Worker. The continuous search for specific innovative solutions and technologies, in order to satisfy the needs of customers, has led Merlo SpA to the creation of an exclusive range of telescopic handlers with small dimensions and respectful of the environment as they are 100% powered by electric batteries.

This revolutionary range combines the performance of a traditional telescopic tractor with the fuel consumption and reduced dimensions of an industrial forklift truck. According to the standard cycle of the EN16796-1/-4 standard, the consumption is 6 kWh/h, comparable to that of industrial forklift trucks with 2 drive wheels and small tires. e-Worker, on the other hand, features 4 drive wheels, large agricultural tires and is designed to work off-road.

The top features of this range are, therefore: the complete reduction of noise levels and polluting emissions, increased maneuverability in confined spaces, and the drastic reduction of operating costs compared to similar models equipped with heat engines powered by diesel fuel.

Innovation has always been one of the pillars of the Merlo Group; even in the most challenging moments of its history, in fact, Merlo has continued to invest and believe in technological evolution as a fundamental point to continue to evolve, to move forward. This has led to an internationally recognized technological leadership and over 80 registered patents.

This year Merlo’s evolution continues and has led to the development of the first electric off-road telehandler: the e-Worker. As proof of the innovative system adopted by this revolutionary range, numerous international awards have been received, starting with the gold medals received in Verona for the “Samoter Innovation Award” and in Paris at the “Grand Prix Matériel” awarded by Chantiers de France and DLR.  Now, a further award for the technology developed has added to the list of the Cuneo-based company: the “EIMA International 20/21 Mentions” for the “Integrally electric transmission on e-Worker”.

The innovative transmission introduces software that controls both the torque and the rotation of the individual motors placed on the wheels, in order to guarantee the correct speed of every single wheel in all possible operating conditions of the telehandler. Moreover, in case of the front internal wheel slipping, the other wheels will always guarantee the required rotation speed and the torque necessary for the correct performance of the activity.

In order to exploit the full potential of the electric units, but at the same time limit consumption in continuous operations, the machine is equipped with a control system that monitors the instantaneous and average energy consumption of the vehicle.

]]> The Monza Grand Prix is ​​a historic event in the Formula 1 championship, just think that this year the 91st edition is taking place.
In addition to the Ferraris, there is another Italian brand that has been present for many years now and it has become almost “at home”.  We are talking about Merlo and his telescopic handlers. For 25 years, Merlo has been supplying its machines for rescue operations and removal of damaged cars. It was 1985 when our telescopic handlers made their first appearance and since then they have become an indispensable tool for Monza operators, thanks to their compact dimensions and their exclusive technologies they allow to operate quickly and remove dangers in the shortest time possible.
This weekend the event is taking place but, due to the ongoing uncertainty of the Covid19 medical emergency, Formula 1 Gran Premio d’Italia 2020 will be held behind closed doors, but the Merlo Group will be at his please with 17 telehandlers in charge of the safety of the pilots.
The unique features of Merlo telehandlers over the years have led them to be adopted also in other circuits around the world, in France, Canada, Belgium, and even Dubai.
The bond between Merlo and the world of circuits that have become so strong that Merlo telehandlers are often associated with races and even those who do not know at all about the world of telehandlers.
