We were rapt when we got the invite from James Doran to visit his ranch, Brookhill Angus in Flemingsburg, Kentucky to help him tell the story of his journey to regeneratively raise his seed stock. For James, caring for animals is tied hand-in-hand to caring for the land, the soil, and the planet. Each needs the other, so the Hustler Trailed Chainless TX205 double bale processor was the perfect fit for James’ ranch management strategy.

James and his family have been breeding registered Angus seed stock for more than 50 years. The ranch itself has been in the care of the Doran family since before the Civil War, and today James and his wife Michelle manage a little more than 115 head of high-quality Angus cattle.

James is a happy owner of a Hustler pull-type Chainless TX205 bale feeder. See why this admittedly “very outspoken” farmer in the heartland is so enthusiastic about his machine and what it allows him to do. From his ownership experience with his Chainless, James then went on to purchase a set of Hustler Softhands LX200 bale handlers.

“I’m very impressed of the build quality with Hustler, it’s put together with pride and care.”

The trailed Chainless TX205 is one of James’ “favorite pieces of equipment of everything” he has, and his endorsement doesn’t come lightly.

The Hustler Chainless bale processor allows the operator to unroll the bale in a long, thin windrow. The more the hay is fluffed, the longer the windrow can be.

“When you put it all over in a long row, the calves eat, the grandmas eat, everybody got to eat. Animals that I wanted improvement in, improved, with this type of feeding versus feeding strictly in a hay ring,”

with this machine, James explained.

When the hay is simply dropped into a hay ring or manually unrolled on the ground, it can remain quite dense. The way the Chainless bale processor fluffs up the hay helps to make it more palatable and easier to be consumed by livestock, and that is particularly true for older cows with slightly damaged teeth or for young calves.

The herd is also encouraged to eat every single bit of the forage, while a thick mat of hay can be used for bedding instead, creating unwanted waste. With the Hustler Chainless bale processor, James is able to drop the hay back on the ground in a very palatable form, almost like it was freshly baled.

“This actually breaks the bale apart and basically lays it back down as if it was a windrow before it was baled.”

James wants to add to the planet, not draw from the planet, so the “truly regenerative process” that the TX205 provides – allowing him to feed his animals while simultaneously reseeding his fields – is just a “better way to do things” as using a conventional flail-type bale processor would pulverize the long stem hay and shatter the seeds in the process.

Depending on the time of the year, James likes to remove the platform side chute from his Hustler to allow a slightly wider feed windrow than normal. Admittedly, this can marginally increase feed waste, but since building up organic matter in the soil allows an even wider spread of seed, the small amount of feed lost in the process is definitely compensated by a greater purchase in the soil of that grass seed – making it unnecessary to add any seed later. It saves time, effort, and of course the cost of the seed.

“My philosophy is to strive for excellence in the breeding and try to – each new generation – improve them in some way and not have an operation where twenty years later you look and it was nothing but a lateral move.”

James Doran is one of the many examples of a client for whom Hustler exists. Our mission goes beyond providing world-class livestock feeding equipment. We strive every day to provide farmers with the means to make a living from their passion and their love for animals; to feed the planet while respecting and providing for future generations and to improve their own quality of life by saving them time, money, and hay.

The story of Kent Smith starts with his grandfather, Jack Smith, who grew up in the little town of Eminence. Jack Smith was working as a logger and tie hacker in southern Missouri and, according to Kent, “he didn’t have two pennies to rub together.” In 1947, he founded Smith Flooring, a company now in its third generation of family ownership.

The timber business is “what drives everything” in the Ozark Forest area, but the family decided to “purpose some of that land for growing cattle,” Kent explained. Kent is now fully in charge of the beef cattle operation since his father, Van Smith, passed away suddenly in 2005.

Since then, Kent has fully embraced his life as a farmer.

“I feel like I’ve taken off about 10 years of my life sitting in an office wondering about numbers and money, and it’s really nice to be able to get out here where it’s just so beautiful, and walking around the calves every day – out here, outside, is a good one,”

Kent admitted.

Although livestock farming and timber harvesting are very different industries, they complement one another, especially in that they share a primary industry asset – land. And,

“anything you can do to increase efficiency, to maximize your return on any investment that you have out there on the land, is a positive thing. The Combi wagon that we have is amazing,”

Kent explained.

Kent Smith farms in rugged country, and Kent chose to breed beef cattle that are hardy enough for the area (such as White Faces and Black Baldys). To feed his herd, he needed a versatile piece of equipment – something that would “feed most anything that I have.”

He found the perfect match: the Hustler Combi RX148.

The Hustler Combi RX range is a chain-less rear floor wagon able to feed out literally every supplementary type of feed, including all bale types, shapes and sizes, and any type of loose feed that can be loaded with a loader including fine chop silage, maize silage, root crops, vegetables and more. Its lateral elevator design delivers feed out of the side of the machine to feed into troughs, feed pads, bunks or open pastures.

Source:Hustler

The loading height of a wagon is often a crucial element since it could narrow the selection of machines that could load into it without damaging the sides of the wagon. With the Hustler Combi RX range, it is possible to use pretty much any front loader of any type (bucket, grab…) to fill it thanks to its low loading height – between 2430 mm (95 inches) and 2650 mm (104 inches) – depending on the model chosen.

Once loaded, the Combi wagon is quick and easy to reconnect (no need to connect a PTO), however of course you could load with an extra loader like you would need to when feeding with a TMR (this simplicity allows for efficient use with just one tractor). The operator only needs to get out of the cab twice in total, meaning 66% less cab entry and exit compared to any other 2 or 6 bale capacity bale processor. Whilst similar cab exit/entry is required when feeding with a TMR, both a tractor and a loader are required to do the job.

Once the bale wrap is removed, the hydraulics only need to be reconnected once, which takes only a few seconds.

The Combi wagons developed by Hustler are built to last.

Feed out in the field and on the feed pad with one wagon

The ultra-low center of gravity, combined with the large floatation tires, are a game-changer for stability allowing the Combi RX wagon to feed out in the roughest of terrain, the terrain you wouldn’t dare take a mixer wagon on! And Combi RX finds itself just as at home in the field as the feed pad, with a large tilting elevator to place that feed exactly where you’d like it.

Source: Hustler

Simple hydraulic drive – with out the need to a PTO shaft!

Yes, the simple design of Hustler’s Combi range is powered by hydraulics for safety, reliability, and lower power consumption. And with the oversized 12,000 lb. roller chains to the high tensile sprockets, there are no wearing parts to buy or replace for the life of the feeder! And it handles all types of feeds including balage, silage, root crops or anything else you can load in it. The powerful hydraulic ram-powered pusher blade ensures even the ugliest of bales are no contest!

Massive drawbar clearance

The drawbar design offers great clearance and a major advantage (far superior to any wide-angle PTO shaft) in maneuverability, making life easier for operators in tight lanes and gateways. This reduces the possibility of damaged gate posts or machines due to operator error. Kent Smith’s Combi RX148 has a turning circle of 7.8 m (25 ft) compared to 20.8 m (68 ft) for the equivalent size wagon.

Impact-resistant floor

The unique heavy-duty 15-mm (3/5″) thick puck board rear floor is slippery, durable and extremely tough, it handles the impact of heavy beets landing on it without damage.

Recently Kent Smith found himself sliding backward down an icy hill, jack-knifing his Combi wagon. Thinking it was going to be out of service for weeks, turned into a $10 trip to the store thanks to Hustler’s design and strength.

“This thing is built like a tank,”

he said.

When John Vallance decided to buy a new set of bale handlers to lighten the workload on the Hustler Softhands purchased by his father 20 years earlier and still used on the farm, he chose Hustler without a second thought. Find out in this video why John chose Hustler after trying a few other brands.

John Vallance farms in Tangiteroria, Northland, New Zealand. Tangiteroria is a small rural community located halfway between Whangārei and Dargaville on State Highway 14 on the banks of the Northern Wairoa River.

As New Zealand’s only subtropical region, Northland’s climate offers a key competitive advantage for its agricultural sector, which includes dairy, beef, and sheep farming. The mild climate and reliable rainfall create ideal conditions for fast pasture growth, giving Northland producers the ability to fatten stock during the warmer winter and spring months. Northland produces around 20% of New Zealand’s beef output and produces about 116,000 tonnes of dairy products.

John Vallance runs 900 heads of Friesian bulls on 360 hectares of grass, his land is a mixture of easy and steep-hill country. John uses quite a bit of wrapped silage bales each feeding season…

Farm equipment seems to be a family affair among the Vallance family! John’s father bought a set of Hustler Softhands and he

“had them for about 20 years and they’ve never let us down so I just went straight in and bought another set of Hustler,”

John explained.

“The reason why we chose Hustler is because of their reliability, its lack of maintenance. Grease them and away you go! However, sticking with Hustler is not only due to John’s father’s choices or the quality of the Softhands, it’s also because Hustler outperforms the others! John has also had experience with other bale handlers or bale grabs, and “their quality hasn’t been up to scratch. We’ve used it for less than a week and I’ve come across cracks in the welds and other issues that weren’t acceptable,”

John recounted.

“They last for a long time so in that respect they’re saving us a lot of money because we’re not having to go and replace them all the time.”

Choosing the right brand of farm equipment is indeed a question of long-term investment. This is true for all equipment – sometimes the purchase price is lower, but there are actually hidden costs, such as the price of parts to be replaced or the time spent on repairs and maintenance. According to John, the Hustler Softhands need “no maintenance, they’re strong, they’re sturdy.” The set is also a pleasure to work with thanks to clever engineering that offers perfect visibility on the load.

“My father’s set of Softhands is proof of that after 20 years of no issues. I’d highly recommend Hustler. Great product,”

John concluded.

The Hustler Combi RX Multi Feeder Range is the result of more than 43 years of leadership in both the multi feeder market combined with over 59 years of market leadership in bale feeders, summed up in ONE machine.

By owning one machine that does it all, the need for farmers to own and train staff on multiple specialty feeders is eliminated.

Superior load optimization reduces trips to the field combined with even better maneuverability saves on tractor and labor costs.

New materials and components cut up to 10hrs of maintenance each month compared to other wagons

4. Feeds anything you load on it

Round & Square bales of any feed type

Long & short cut silage of any feed type

Maize or Corn silage and PKE

Root crops, food waste, and much more

New puck board floor design can take the impact of loading heavy loads and root crops without denting or damaging the floors.

Massive oversize feeding bars and huge 12,000lb roller chains prevent bent bars or broken chains preventing downtime and costly repairs

Feed control as standard: gives the operator the best of both – silage wagon and bale feeder at the flick of a switch. Select between automated feed sequences or manually control each floor individually for total machine control

Maximum Visibility with see-through elevator retainers and full front-to-back look through design. Ease of use is next-level thanks to the improvement in visibility

No spillage between floors and elevator when feeding on a feedlot or feed pad

No more labor intensive unblocking, skipping belts, or frequent maintenance adjustments.

Hydraulic cylinder powered rear pusher door eliminates a full set of rear floor chains, bars, gearboxes, and the maintenance and wear and tear that comes with them. The 2-speed rams are internally ported to eliminate hoses, and maintenance

Hustler explains how to re-baling big bales into squared bales. Here is the full-text

Why re-baling? you may ask. Re-baling your big round or square bales into small squares may be a lucrative way to on-sell your hay or straw. One big round bale can in most cases be turned into 22x small squares – you do the maths.

Or it might just be a good way for you to turn you large bales into easy to handle, convenient small bales. Often time is scarce when harvesting, so making large bales and then turning them into small bales later on in the off-season, can be a great option depending on your operation.

Also, using your Hustler bale unroller to feed a bale into a TMR Mixer can make the mixing process a lot quicker.

Whatever your intention, a Hustler bale unroller can help. The Chainless SX105 has been specifically developed for re-baling, however, you can use any Chainless model to feed your bales into the baling machine.

Dennis from DLH Farms Shows Us How

Dennis from DLH Farms has filmed a tutorial on his YouTube Channel to show how he uses his mounted Chainless LX105 (Chainless X2500) bale unroller to re-bale 5×5 round bales into small squares that are sold at the farm store. So far, he has sold 245 of them through the store.

Dennis likes the set-up of the Hustler Chainless bale feeder. The bale cradle can be unhooked from the cabin without a rope and the tractor drops away from it while retaining the double spears that can be used for loading the bale. Read more about our Snaplox hands-free automatic connection system here or watch our 60-second video explaining the feature here.

He uses the tractor to power the bale unroller that feeds into the baling machine and shows you how he works it. While he points out that slow is the way to go at the start of the bale, once you get a good flow it’s nice and easy to feed the hay into the re-baler by adjusting the platform to the size of your bale. The speed of the rotors teasing apart the bale can also be adjusted, making sure any shape or form of the bale can be unrolled.

The original content was published by Hustler Equipment.

Their first Hustler was purchased some 23 years ago on Russell’s family farm and the time has come for an update. We’re glad we could help with choosing another Hustler bale feeder that fits the operation and ticks all the boxes for Russell and his right hand Gary. Especially the accurate self-loading system of the Hustler Chainless TX205 has been an attractive feature for Russell.

Russell and Gary welcome us in Moa Creek, where they feed 1500-2000 bales between their family farm and a lease block. Their first Hustler bale feeder is still in operation after 23 years of service and according to Russell, “there only was the odd hick-up, mostly due to human error.” So they were happy to choose another Hustler bale processor when increasing the size of their operation, this time the latest generation Chainless TX205.

Courtesy of hustlerequipment.com

Gary likes the fact that the Chainless TX205 is easy to use and there aren’t many moving parts on the bale unroller – so not a lot to go wrong. Low maintenance and robust materials are part of the reason, why their first Hustler lasted over 20 years.

Courtesy of hustlerequipment.com

“The loading system is more accurate” Russell notes. “It takes the guess-work out of setting up a bale correctly on the bed.” The integrated tynes mean that Russell is able to set up the bale correctly and consistent each time, straight away. Which is a lot more accurate than letting the bale slide from a rail or the forks of the tractor. Rather than having to stop and correct the way the bale is sitting or unrolling while on the job, the Hustler self-loading system makes sure the bale is sitting perfectly in the chamber each time.

Courtesy of hustlerequipment.com

Not only does this save time and makes a difference to Russell, but it is also safer than any other bale loading system. The bale can be unwrapped above the feed cradle, reducing waste. The operator decides to not load the bale? No problem, as the loading sequence can be reversed just as easily.

A year ago they revealed the All-New Combi RX feedout wagon range at the Mystery Creek field days and it has changed the way farmers feed their livestock, since. To mark the occasion, here is a summary as to why Range of RX Combi Feedout Wagons is the biggest innovation in Feedout wagons and Combi feeders in the past 37 years and what makes them such a pleasure to use.

The New Master of Grass-Silage feeding

Although the original Robertson Comby wagons have been the most versatile wagon on the market over the past 43 years, a bit of operator technique was required with the original design due to its extreme versatility. This meant some farmers who only fed grass pit/clamp silage and who had a number of different staff taking care of the feeding out duties would resort to a basic silage wagon to eliminate the need for good operators.

So they decided to Rethink the way Combi feeders operate, developing a Combi with extreme versatility and simple to use. Welcome Combi RX range the only true feedout wagon on the market that combines the best of Silage Wagon, Bale Feeder, Bale Feeder, and Combi Wagon in one machine.

This means even more options and flexibility with only one single machine to maintain and operate a perfectly managed feeding program as a result. Grass silage bales square or round, root crops, feed waste, maize silage you name it – the RX feeds it and thanks to the durability of the new 15mm thick high-density floor loading of heavy root-crops no longer damages the floor.

At the flick of a switch in the cab, FeedControl automates the operation of floor and elevator movement for windrow consistency and simplicity of operation. Loaded up some tricky rounds and squares in the same load then simply flick the switch and you get full control to save blocking, unlike a conventional wagon.

The RX Range is a game-changer when it comes to feeding grass silage and any other type of supplementary feed.

The optional wireless scales and feed management system Feedlink will let you program the exact feed amount and helps track and improve feeding routines.

Clever Engineering

The 2-speed floor of the RX Combi Wagon has very few moving parts and no chains, which makes it bulletproof, easy to maintain, and super reliable. The flat floor design eliminates spillage between the cross floor and the elevator and prevents root crops from bending bars and jamming the rear floor.

The elevator is designed to drop the feed off at a higher point, compared to silage wagons. This will let you feed over hot wires, into bunks, hay racks or hard against the fence. It also means that feed won’t get run over or squashed into the mud when distributing in a sacrificed paddock.

Maximum Visibility

The newly improved visibility of the wagon allows you to see the entire wagon load from your tractor seat. See exactly how much feed is coming up the elevator and where it is placed for increased control and less feed waste. By rethinking the design of the front end we’ve eliminated 6 of the most troublesome parts of the old design, where mud and debris off the tractor tyre would stick to the concertina panels and bind up the elevator eventually needing to be replaced putting the machine out of action.

Thanks to the new design of the front spill panels the operators get unreal visibility, it’s a real break-through in control allowing the operator to see directly into the elevator making it so much more enjoyable feeding out.

Easy Connecting / Disconnecting

The RX Combi Range uses all hydraulic drives to connect and disconnect to the tractor instead of PTO shafts. This makes the unit extremely easy and quick to reconnect when using the feeding tractor for loading. For more time savings and smooth operation.

Bruno and Daniel Batard are two brothers who run a dairy and beef farm in France, feeding out more than a thousand bales a year. Used to feeding out their livestock by hand, they have now owned a Hustler Chainless bale feeder for five years and it has been a real game-changer for their operation.

The Batard Brothers farm is located in the village of Saint-Aybert in the north of France, right next to the Belgian border. They own 90 dairy cows and about 50 Belgian Blue cattle. Each year, they feed out 1200 to 1500 bales with their Hustler CH2000 bale feeder (this model has now been replaced by the Chainless LM104 bale feeder) that they absolutely love!

Courtesy of blog.hustlerequipment.com

Bruno and Daniel feed out a large variety of bales as dairy and beef livestock don’t have the same nutritional needs.

“We feed out meslin baleage, which weighs between 1000 and 1200 kilos, and we also feed out ryegrass, which weights between 500 and 600 kilos.”

For them, it was also very important to find a machine able to keep the feed intact, unlike most of the bale processors available on the market which tend to chop the hay. Using hay rings wasn’t an option to consider because it created too much competition, while the Hustler bale feeder allows them to feed out a thin windrow along the headlocks.

Courtesy of blog.hustlerequipment.com

Most of Batard Brothers’ livestock is housed indoor, especially during winter. In the barns, even the slightest noise resounds a lot, which can cause stress for the animals. As stress has a lot of impact on the quality of the meat or the quality of the milk, Bruno and Daniel want to respect the well-being of their livestock as much as possible. The Chainless bale feeder is ideal as it offers a quieter operation.

“Seriously, if we had an electric tractor, we wouldn’t hear any noise at all,”

Bruno joked.

“Another huge benefit of this machine is that you can do everything with just one tractor: loading and feeding out,”

Bruno continued. With integrated tynes, the Hustler Chainless bale feeder is self-loading but also very easy to use and cheap to run: no need for an additional piece of equipment to buy or to run, which would ultimately impact investment or fuel expenses.

Courtesy of blog.hustlerequipment.com

Bruno and Daniel are very organized as they have no time to waste. Their Hustler perfectly fits their feeding routine:

“I feed out the silage first with my telehandler, then Bruno feeds out the hay straight after me. In two or three minutes, the bale is fully unwound”,

Daniel explained.

Bruno and Daniel bought their machine from a nearby Hustler accredited dealer, Messeant. All Hustler bale feeders are backed up with a four-year warranty so it was convenient for them to be able to buy the machine from a local dealer, just in case. However, they have never experienced any break down with their Hustler bale feeder even though it works hard every day!

Hustler has recently visited Paul Robottom at Pendlehill Station, in Central Hawkes Bay, who has been using their Equipment for the past 30 years.

As they has reported, he is a busy man running a 1000 hectare station with an impressive 4500 sheep. Around 3500 lambs are finished every year and 350 weaner steers are purchased each autumn to be finished over the next 2 years. On top of that, he’s cropping 25 hectares of Oats for winter and Brassica in summer for fattening the lambs.

Paul needs good equipment for his purposes, that gets the job done efficiently and hassle-free, for which he’s trusted in Hustler equipment to help him achieve more every day over the past 30 years.

“We’ve traded in our old Hustler Chainless 2000 through ourlocal Hustler dealer Stevenson &Taylor in Waipukurau, for the new Chainless LX104 and it has worked flawlessy so far.”

“We think the hands-down best feature of the Hustler Chainless LX104 is the auto quick hitch system Snaplox.” There is no rope to pull to unlatch the feeder, which means it is gentle on the back. “Just put the feeder on the ground, it unlatches automatically and you can drive away.”

“The time we save with the Hustler Chainless LX104 and its auto hitch system is a great advantage for our operation”

“For the last 30 years we have been using Hustler Equipment, whether its bale feeders or Softhands, and I would highly recommend Hustler Equipment to other farmers.”
