DeLaval Publishes 2020 Sustainability Report

In the recently published DeLaval 2020 Sustainability Report, the global dairy industry leader shares its commitment to addressing animal welfare, reducing environmental impact, and improving working conditions. DeLaval analyzes sustainability through three main perspectives: Environment; Food and Animal Welfare; and Social and Economic.

“At DeLaval, our vision to make sustainable food production possible is at the core of everything we do. In order to achieve that vision, we must take into account both our own operations as well as our customers’ operations, working to provide them with sustainable solutions that fit their unique goals,”

said Fabian Bernal, recently appointed Head of Sustainability for DeLaval Group.

In the report, DeLaval shares progress toward improving sustainability for its dairy producer customers. These include:

Reducing the environmental impact of every liter/pound of milk produced through the development of safe solutions that improve efficiency and milk yield with animal welfare in mind
Continuing to improve on-farm sustainability through efficient innovations, such as automated milking and feeding systems, better and gentler liners that improve milk extraction and animal welfare, reduced-temperature system cleaning solutions, and more
Focus on farm profitability for customers – as farms produce more milk per animal, they have a lower environmental footprint and are more economically sustainable
Ensuring animal welfare is at the center of new innovations – healthy animals require less medical intervention, produce higher quality and volumes of milk for more years

DeLaval has achieved the following improvements toward their vision of increasing sustainability in production:

Decreased waste by 4% and volatile organic compounds by 10%
Water use decreased 2% despite an increase in sales volume
Decreased lost time accident rate from 4.34 in 2019 to 3.61 in 2020
Staff turnover decreased to 12%
Increased percentage of female leaders to 23%
Commitment to establishing a diverse and inclusive workplace through new initiatives: unconscious bias training, updated recruitment policy, and working with third-party groups focused on gender diversity
Adapted to the challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic by placing employee health and wellbeing as the top priority. Supported employees in setting up work-from-home stations, held COVID-19 safety educational sessions, and had frequent stress and mental health check-ins; all while all key functions continued operating to serve customers.

DeLaval donates nearly $50,000 to Heart to Heart International

The global COVID-19 outbreak has brought about never-before-seen challenges in our daily lives, and DeLaval remains deeply concerned for all those affected by the pandemic. Early on during the outbreak, the Tetra Laval Group announced a global € 10 million donation towards the COVID-19 relief effort.

As a subsidiary of the Tetra Laval Group and part of the global donation, DeLaval has donated $49,050 to Heart to Heart International with a view to support the health care system/COVID-19 relief efforts in the Kansas City, MO area. The contribution will be used to support efforts in place on COVID-19 testing in the local area.

Heart to Heart International strengthens communities through improving health access, providing humanitarian development and administering crisis relief worldwide. The organization engages volunteers, collaborates with partners and deploys resources to achieve this mission, and is urgently distributing needed equipment and medications both locally and around the world in response to the current global crisis.

Drawing from 350 combined years of experience, Milk Barn technicians, customer service, route drivers and leaders are positioned to be your dairy resource.

The Milk Barn product line includes a range of technology-forward DeLaval solutions, from teat dips, detergents and farm supplies, to the latest offerings from DeLaval: the VMS milking system V300, Parlor milking system P500, and OptiDuo feed refresher.

Delaval Updates about Covid-19

Delaval has released a new press release about Covid-19.

The safety and health of our customers, employees, and dealers is our primary concern at this time. Here’s what you need to know to date.

Our sincere thanks to dairy producers for continuing the important task of providing the world with a healthy and nutritious product in these uncertain times. Designating food production as an essential service also means ensuring that milking equipment is operating to the best of its ability. DeLaval supports you, to provide you with the products and services you need to operate without interruption.

Our factories continue to provide essential solutions for dairy production. While we have taken every precaution to ensure a safe working environment for our valued employees, we recognize that this has been a difficult time and appreciate the steps that have been taken to keep production safe.

All local events and tours have been suspended. Contact your dealer or local DeLaval representative if you have any questions regarding an event.

To date, we have been able to respond to demand for products with some expected delays in shipping times. Our dealers and teams continue to provide products and services and perform installations.

All-new Evanza Milking Cluster Improves Milking Time, Udder Health

Evanza has introduced the new milking cluster. Evanza is the most advanced cluster from DeLaval: it’s not only faster, but also better for your cows and your bottom line. It will be for the first time in North America at Salon Industrie et Machinerie Agricole de Québec (SIMAQ), Thursday, January 30-Saturday, February 1, 2020 in booth 151.

Gavin Strang, DeLaval North America Market Development Director, said:

“We’ve been on this incredible innovation journey at DeLaval for over 135 years, and we are excited to share this ground-breaking solution. Evanza is the most efficient cluster we’ve ever developed, which can mean more milk, better udder health and super quick Clover cartridge replacement.”

The Evanza milking cluster is lightweight, with ergonomic grips and excellent weight distribution for easy attachment. It provides up to a 9.3 percent higher milk flow and up to seven percent shorter milking time. It boasts up to 83 percent less slip and has shown up to a 92 percent improvement in teat condition scoring.*

Proprietary technology including DeLaval TopFlow, DeLaval Turn&Milk and incorporation of the DeLaval Clover cartridge make these vast improvements possible. TopFlow has been shown to help improve milk flow and udder health. Turn&Milk is the time-saving feature on the cartridge that allows for a quick and easy exchange. Introduced last year, the Clover cartridge eliminates twisted liners in order to increase milking performance and liner life.

Integrated Robotic and Parlor Solutions at SIMAQ

The DeLaval VMS milking series will also be on display at SIMAQ. Announced in fall 2019, the DeLaval VMS V310, features DeLaval InSight, DeLaval InControl, DeLaval PureFlow and DeLaval RePro, allowing each cow to be milked according to her needs and capacity, with simultaneous pregnancy checking.

Clemson University’s Lamaster Dairy Employs latest robotic technology

Three DeLaval VMS V300 robots now milk the University’s research and education herd

The Lamaster Dairy Unit at Clemson University is the first U.S. educational institution to implement the VMS milking system V300 robot, the latest milking technology from DeLAval. Since its adoption by a Canadian university earlier this year, the VMS V300 has set the new standard for production, research, and education in herd management.

“This was a great solution to help with our labor issues and to demonstrate a modern solution for our producers,” says John Andrae, Clemson University Experiment Station Assistant Director. “It allows our researchers to explore dairy nutrition and dairy management research that’s relevant to robotic milkers, which is something unique for university in general and particularly for those in the Southeast.”

Three VMS V300 robots milks the school’s 160-cow herd, which is expected to max out at 200 cows. One robot milks the Jerseys, while the other two milk the Holsteins. Previously milked in a double-4 parlor, University staff felt the need to upgrade, not only because the system was wearing out, but also to remain relevant for teaching and accommodate the strict labor regulations of a state institution.

According to Steve Waggoner, Operations Manager at Clemson’s dairy farm, after examining the latest technology the VMS V300 robots were chosen as the best fit for the goals of their school and research herd. “We’re hoping this will help with our labor force,” he says. “I like the accuracy and how fast and efficient they are.”

Lamaster Dairy is historically known for Jersey genetics, however the Holstein herd has become one of the top University herds in the U.S. Clemson University’s six research and education centers provide science-based solutions that directly support South Carolina’s $42 billion agribusiness industry.

Comestar Holstein Invests in Robotic Milking

The Quebec -based dairy farm known across the globe for its outstanding genetics, including famed comestar Laurie Sheik, signed an agreement to purchase a total of eight Delaval VMS V300 with herd Navigator

Comestar Holstein, is preparing a new system which allows the cows to choose when they are milked, and the milking itself is performed by the new generation of milking robot: the DeLaval VMS V300. Comestar owners Marc and France Comtois, together with their children Kathleen, Steve, and Julie and her husband Julien Turmel, were very clear on the benefit of the new system for their much-envied Holsteins. “There will be more freedom and comfort for the animal,” says Marc.

But it’s not just a case of putting in some new robots – it is the connection of those robots to capture and analyze more data, faster and more easily than ever before that will enable the Comtois family to make better decisions to improve the farm environment for themselves, workers and cows.

Marc also notes that with their new DeLaval VMS system, cows will most likely be less stressed. “It will be better for the animals. We’ll be able to manage the herd’s health more efficiently.”

This power of this machine is made possible by the data captured at each milking by DeLaval Herd Navigator system, which performs automated milk analysis including progesterone levels. Every morning the Comtois family and their staff receive information on each individual cow’s milking performance, health and reproductive status – because amongst other industry firsts, DeLaval VMS V300 is still the only automated milking solution that includes automated pregnancy checks.

In one year from now, Comestar Holstein plans to be milking 400 cows with six VMS V300 robots in a new sandbedded freestall barn. The facility will be built to accommodate two additional VMS units. DeLaval dealer Équipements Provencher supports the installation and service of Comestar Holstein’s robots.

The rise of automated milking has created a demand for robot-efficient dairy cows where every second counts.

Paul Larmer, Semex CEO, says he isn’t surprised that Comestar Holstein is moving towards automation given their reputation for being at the forefront of dairy cattle technologies. “Comestar sires are known worldwide for siring excellent feet & legs, udders that have the correct teat settings and large volumes of milk. The global industry is demanding these kind of cows that are essentially ‘robot ready,’ and bloodlines like Comestar have been and will continue to meet this demand.”
