During the first day’s press conference, Executive Board members Christian Kötz and Philip Nelles pointed out the importance of the agricultural business as a strategic, fast-growing segment.

Insights from Continental’s study “Agriculture in Transition”, were also shared at the press conference, including how farmers see sustainability as one of the main challenges for the future. The study confirms that most farmers take this responsibility very seriously while trying to tackle the challenge of adapting to new conditions caused by environmental change.

From carbon goals to green robots: Continental’s vision for the next age of farming

“Our deep understanding of the industry drives us to not only improve efficiency and sustainability for our customers but to examine every facet, from production to materials. Many OEMs have set themselves ambitious sustainability goals, which closely resemble Continental’s own ambition of becoming 100 percent carbon neutral by 2050 at the latest. Continental aims to support this transformation to a smarter and more sustainable agriculture. As a partner for innovative solutions, we provide farmers with access to technologies that will help them enter the new age of smart farming.”

said Philip Nelles, Member of the Executive Board for the Group Sector ContiTech.

One of the smart solutions presented at Agritechnica is an environmentally friendly weed control system, designed and developed by Continental Engineering Services (CES), which specializes in providing development services for technology companies across multiple industries. The prototype is based on optical sensor technology and supported by automotive-grade software and AI. The system provides a highly efficient and precise organic method of agricultural weed control by accurately detecting weeds and eradicating them with boiling water instead of herbicides.

“This concept demonstrates not just our expertise in agriculture and our ability to develop new technologies, but also how we adapt existing technologies to offer solutions for upcoming needs.”

said Nelles.

The weed control system prototype is based on optical sensor technology and supported by automotive-grade software and AI.

To ease the transition to smart farming, Continental has launched user-friendly technologies like ContiConnect Lite, the entry to digital tire monitoring. Thanks to a Bluetooth-enabled sensor inside the tire, the system gives farmers easy access to essential tire data directly on their mobile devices. No additional hardware is needed. This allows efficient operations, reduced emissions and significant cost savings by helping farmers set the right tire pressure before starting work in the field.

Another solution presented at Agritechnica is Continental’s mobile robotic system for greenhouses. This initiative uses a versatile modular design, centered around a self-propelled robotic platform that can accommodate various implements to autonomously perform tasks such as UVC treatment, targeted harvesting and monitoring, around the clock.

The mobile robotic system for greenhouses, which can accommodate various devices.

Furthermore, Continental showcased three products developed specifically for the agricultural sector that have received the official seal of approval of the Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft (DLG). The VF TractorMaster Hybrid tire underscores the performance of the new generation of Continental agricultural tires with its fuel-efficient and soil-friendly tire technology. NightViu LED Working Lights improve visibility even during night harvests with high light efficiency, and the ProViu 360 surround-view camera system increases safety for machine operators as well as their direct surroundings.

New additions to Continental’s TractorMaster and CompactMaster AG/EM ranges

Continental has introduced a new size for its popular TractorMaster product line: the 600/70R34. This addition not only complements the existing range, but can also be used as a front tire in combination with other specific tire sizes. The premium tire supplier will also launch the TractorMaster 620/70R42 as a rear tire option in the near future.

The CompactMaster product line, initially available in size 460/70R24, now also comes in 500/70R24, providing more options for telehandler in different operating conditions. The CompactMaster AG is designed for agricultural applications such as field operations, while the CompactMaster EM is tailored for hard-surface logistics tasks. “With the size 500, we are meeting the demand from our customers, as well as responding to the trend toward larger vehicles and diverse operational requirements,” says Ivonne Bierwirth, Head of Business Field Agricultural Tires.

Optimizing return on investment via technologically advanced tires

Continental has launched nine product lines with over 110 articles for agricultural machinery in the last years. Bierwirth: “With our portfolio out of our plant in Portugal, we are looking for products that address current trends and challenges within the industry to support efficient agricultural work. Farmers will benefit from our tailor-made selection suitable for diverse conditions.” The focus remains on damage- and cut resistance, as well as lifetime and fuel savings as key factors in tires total cost of ownership.

New, intelligent technologies for a more sustainable agriculture at Agritechnica 2023

At this year’s Agritechnica, the world’s leading trade fair for agricultural technology, Continental will showcase its cutting-edge technologies under the slogan: “Our Smart Farming. For your harvest of tomorrow.” Continental’s booth will feature AI-based systems, autonomous mobile robots, sensors and tire technologies that ensure greater sustainability, safety and efficiency on the farm, in the greenhouse and on the field. At booth A19 in hall 20, the technology company will present the VF TractorMaster Hybrid with the lite version of ContiConnect and the VF TractorMaster. The event will take place from November 12 to 18, 2023, in Hanover, Germany.

The John Deere product lines 6M and 6R are available with the Continental agricultural tires TractorMaster and VF TractorMaster. Due to the OE approval, both product lines can be ordered when purchasing a 90 to 300 HP John Deere tractor from November 1st on. The tires developed and produced by Continental, are particularly robust and durable.

Facing the multiple requirements of agricultural tires, the range includes different tire sizes with tire widths up to 800 mm, rim diameters of 46”, and tire diameters of up to 2.05 m. Thus, John Deere is expanding its existing Continental tire selection for mid tractors. Continental has been supplying John Deere with the Tractor70 and Tractor85 tires since 2019. Now, customers can specify all John Deere 6M and 6R series models with all Continental tires approved ex-works.

TractorMaster and VF TractorMaster: flexible use on field and road

Both tire models are characterized by their particular robustness, durability, and high mileage. The radial tires have a five percent higher lug surface area than comparable agricultural tires due to the special design and application of the d.fine lug technology developed by Continental. This ensures longer mileage. The tire’s material and the so-called n.flex technology ensure its particularly high stability of shape and impact.

The carcass material made of stretchable nylon is flexible enough to withstand an impact – without losing its original shape. Furthermore, the flexible material allows the tire to adapt particularly well to uneven ground. Thanks to this flexibility, the tire quickly returns to its original shape.

“With the TractorMaster, John Deere is expanding its tire portfolio with a test winner in the agricultural tire segment, which stands for efficiency and cost-effectiveness,”

says Jens Mund, Key Account Manager for agricultural tire original equipment at Continental Commercial Specialty Tires.

In 2019, the German Agricultural Society (DLG) certified the TractorMaster premium quality and Continental tire competed against other European premium tire manufacturers in the DLG test.

Both product lines are manufactured at the state-of-the-art Continental plant in Lousado, Portugal.

The partnership underlines Continental’s Agricultural Growth Strategy

John Deere has been offering its customers Continental agricultural tires since 2019. Jens Mund continuous:

“We are delighted that John Deere is expanding its tire range with further tires from us. This underscores our growth ambitions in the agricultural sector.”

Continental has launched CompactMaster EM, a new telehandler and compact loader tire. Benjamin Hübner, Product Line Manager Agricultural Tires at Continental Commercial Specialty Tires, says:

“The CompactMaster EM is specifically designed to help operators handle demanding rough conditions. The tire features new Turtle Shield tread technology and a twisted steel cord. The hard shell, and more flexible steel wire construction, helps to prevent cuts and damages whilst offering greater stability.”

Turtle Shield and Twisted Steel cord technologies to prevent punctures and maximize robustness

Telehandlers and compact loaders make stationary turns on hard surfaces which increases the lateral pressure on the tire.

“The new twisted steel cord construction is part of the unique Turtle Shield design beneath the rubber which protects the tire shoulder area from damage like cuts and penetration from foreign objects,”

explains Hübner.

The tire has a higher amount of rubber with a finely structured block to offer better mileage and easier stationary turns.

“The CompactMaster EM has been designed by our research and development team. Production takes place in our state-of-the-art production plant in Lousado, Portugal,”

he says.

CompactMaster EM: Suitable in agriculture and the construction industries

The CompactMaster EM tire is ideal for vehicles that work on paved surfaces, asphalt, sand, and gravel, either in agriculture or construction. The new tread pattern has been designed to withstand the lateral forces of stationary turns making it more resistant to punctures from foreign objects. It is also capable of operating at speeds of up to 31 miles per hour.

“The ability to travel at higher speeds offers the potential to save valuable time”,

he says.

Continental will celebrate its 150th company anniversary. Since its foundation in Hanover, Germany, in 1871 Continental has been developing pioneering technologies and services for sustainable and connected mobility of people and their goods. From a small factory in Hanover, the company has developed into one of the global players in the automotive industry, which is now operating in 58 countries and markets.

Continental is the oldest independent and also one of the largest tire manufacturers in the world. Over the past 150 years, the company has set standards in the tire industry with its pioneering spirit and innovative strength.

Time and again, it was Continental’s engineers who, with their ground-breaking inventions, ensured that tires became safer, more efficient, and sustainable. Milestones in Continental’s tire development include the first treaded tire, the first tire with a detachable rim, the patent for the world’s first tubeless tire, and, with its “all-terrain” model, the first dedicated winter tire. Likewise, the first pneumatic tractor tire came from Continental.

Later came the first rolling resistance-optimized tire and the first production tire to feature a tread made of dandelion rubber. Continental is also one of the pioneers in the field of digitalization. As early as 1999 the tire manufacturer demonstrated that the data required for advanced driver assistance systems can be determined even more accurately and quickly if the tire is used as a data source.

This was the birth of the intelligent tire. Meanwhile, Continental is connecting its tires and their sensors to the cloud and offering its customers completely new, smart, and digital tire solutions and services.

“Tires are our passion. Our technological excellence has ensured safety, reliability, and sustainability for 150 years. We are proud of this. Many of today’s technology standards in tires come from Continental. Time and time again, we push the boundaries of what is possible. Our goal is to produce our entire product portfolio exclusively from sustainable materials in a climate-neutral way by 2050 at the latest,”

said Christian Kötz, Head of the Tires business area and member of the executive board of Continental.

Continental’s roots go back to the early days of the founding era. On October 8th, 1871, the “Continental-Caoutchouc- & Gutta-Percha-Compagnie” was incorporated. The product range initially included a variety of rubber products, such as toy balls, rubber mats, roller coverings, rubberized fabrics or balloons, and solid tires for carriages and bicycles. When the bicycle began its worldwide career in 1892 with freewheel and coaster brake, Continental was the first German company to produce pneumatic bicycle tires, and hence “pneumatics” soon became a household word.

A short time later, in 1898, the production of pneumatic tires for cars also began. The first pneumatics was still treadless and had comparatively limited handling characteristics by today’s standards, especially on wet or wintry roads. All tire manufacturers were looking for solutions to the sliding susceptibility of their products – until Continental presented the world’s first car tire with a tread in 1904.

Dynamic driving simulator: The life-size cabin adds to the immersive driving experience, allowing test drivers to react and respond as they would in a real vehicle.

Industrialization and mobility needs as early drivers of innovation

The triumph of individual mobility and advancing industrialization demanded tire products forever new fields of application. In addition to safety, the theme of comfort also increasingly became the focus of attention.

In 1908 Continental engineers caused a worldwide sensation with the invention of the detachable rim, which made the wheel and tire mounting much easier. To mark its 50th anniversary, Continental was the first German company to launch large tires for commercial vehicles on the market. In 1928 tires for agricultural tractors and tractor units were manufactured for the first time.

The T2 agricultural tractor tire was the first pneumatic agricultural tire in Europe. In the industrial sector, Continental revolutionized the segment of solid tires, which are used on forklift trucks, airport vehicles, and other heavy-duty industrial applications. Introduced in 1932, the great success of the ContiSuperElastic solid rubber tire led to the abbreviation for this category that is customary in the industry today: CSE.

Another milestone in the industrial history of the 20th century is the first tire made of synthetic rubber, which rolled out of Continental’s factory hall in 1936. Under the effects of the shortage economy during the war years, the tire manufacturer launched the first research series to obtain rubber from Russian dandelions. A project that was taken up again in 2011 and has been successfully driven forward since then. The “Urban Taraxagum” bicycle tire is Continental’s first tire made in series production using rubber from dandelions.

In 1943 Continental filed a patent application for the tubeless tire. An invention that significantly improved the rolling resistance of tires and became a common technological principle in the post-war period and still is today. Continental first enabled particularly safe driving in winter in 1934 with its “all-terrain” model, its first dedicated tire designed for snow, and thus its first winter tire. In 1953 Continental crossed the snowy St. Gotthard Pass in Switzerland with its M+S tires (mud and snow) under notarial supervision, successfully completing the first winter tire test in history.

Safety and comfort were already drivers of technological excellence at the beginning of the 20th century – in 1908, Continental developed the detachable rim and made wheel and tire mounting much easier.

Intensive testing enables safety – in city traffic or when driving under extreme conditions

Before a new tire from Continental is launched on the market, it has to successfully pass a wide range of tests, be it technical innovations in the passenger car, truck, or special tire sector. In total, new tire models cover 25 million test kilometers each year before the actual start of production. The enormous effort is justified. Because it is the foundation for the product quality of the tire manufacturer from Hanover, for all applications – even under extreme conditions. In 2003 Continental became the only supplier of a production tire with a permissible maximum speed of up to 360 km/h with the ContiSportContact Vmax. In 2007 the ContiSportContact Vmax was the first tire to be entered in the Guinness Book of Records and was the first choice for numerous record-breaking races of well-known tuners.

For the testing of tires and all conceivable conditions, the company maintains state-of-the-art tire testing facilities worldwide. The Contidrom near Hanover, the “prototype” and reference of all Continental tire test centers, was opened in 1967.

As early as 1968 the first electronically controlled driverless car took to the track at the Contidrom, to the astonishment of the press and public. Continental has further developed this technology and now uses it at its test site in Uvalde, Texas, USA, to subject its tires to endurance tests.

In 2012 the Automated Indoor Braking Analyser (AIBA) was officially opened at the Contidrom test site. This facility, which is the only one of its kind in the world, enables the brake performance of tires on different road surfaces to be tested all year round, regardless of the weather, and fully automatically using unmanned vehicles. In the future, tires will also be tested there is a new type of dynamic driving simulator.

Thus, professional test drivers will also be carrying out realistic driving scenarios virtually. Having each test cycle completed in the driving simulator instead of on real roadways means fewer test tires need to be produced. Hence, this investment in the new testing technology also contributes to Continental’s extensive sustainability efforts.

Resource awareness as an early driver of technological excellence

Continental has been committed to greater sustainability in the tire and automotive industry since the early seventies of the last century. The effects of the oil crisis in 1973 provided the impetus for a research project to develop tires with optimized rolling resistance.

The insights gained in this project ultimately led to the presentation of a previously unprecedented product in 1993. For the first time, a tire in the ContiEcoContact combined environmental benefits and economic aspects with outstanding driving and safety characteristics.

Since then Continental has been facing major challenges in dealing with finite raw materials and the need to reduce CO2 emissions. For many years now sustainable and responsible management has been an integral part of Continental’s corporate strategy. Efforts here are centered around the strategic topics of climate action, low-emission mobility, the circular economy, and sustainable supply chains, thus embracing all phases of the value chain.

As early as 1903, a branch plant was set up in Seelze near Hanover for the reprocessing and recycling of rubber scrap. In 2013, Continental opened its unique ContiLifeCycle plant in Hanover Stöcken. With its integrated approach to retreading for truck and bus tires and a specially developed industrial-scale rubber recycling plant, it is an industry pioneer.

In order to make the tires of the future even more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly in terms of production, use, and recyclability, the company is systematically investing in the research and development of new technologies, alternative materials, and environmentally compatible production processes. For example, the tire manufacturer intends to gradually switch to 100 percent sustainably produced materials in its tire products by 2050.

Sensor technology and digitalization enable innovative tire solutions and services

Continental is also one of the pioneers when it comes to the digitalization of tires. As early as 1999, the tire manufacturer demonstrated that the data required for advanced driver assistance systems could be determined even more accurately and quickly by using the tire as a data source. That was the birth of the intelligent tire.

Since then Continental has continued to drive forward the digitalization of tires, enabling completely new services for fleet and end customers. Since 2010 Continental has bundled all services for fleet customers under the umbrella of its brand Conti360° Fleet Services. From the recommendation and perfect selection of the right tires to correct mounting and quick assistance in the event of a flat tire to constant inspection and comprehensive tire reports for all their vehicles, the fleet operators receive a highly professional all-around tire service.

The company is continuing to expand the ecosystem of smart, digital solutions for Continental’s premium tires that have been created in the meantime. As one of the world’s largest suppliers of electronics, sensor systems, and software in the mobility industry, Continental has a decisive competitive advantage here.

For example, Continental’s ability to allow the tire to communicate with other safety-related components as a central element in the vehicle system led to a ground-breaking project back at the beginning of the millennium: the 30-meter car.

The coordination of all systems involved in the braking operation resulted in a vehicle that came to a standstill after only 30 meters with full braking at 100 km/h. At that time the average braking distance was still between 36 and 40 meters. This corresponded to shortening the braking distance by up to 25 percent.

Today, Continental is using the direct connection of its tires and sensors to the cloud to offer completely new business models. Fed by a large number of data points, Continental’s fleet customers can check the condition of their tires at any time using algorithms developed in-house.

This means that tire maintenance can be carried out on an as-needed basis, not as a preventive measure, and thus much more efficiently. Fleet providers thus benefit from minimized downtime due to repairs, increased safety, lower overall costs due to greater energy efficiency, and generally more efficient operation. In 2020, Continental set new standards with the presentation of its successful pilot project for significantly accurate tread depth monitoring using algorithms and vehicle telemetry data.

In the future, Continental will continue to stand for innovative excellence in tire technology with its premium portfolio in the passenger car, truck, and special tire segments. In its new strategy program presented in 2020, Continental describes its path into the new decade. The focus of the Vision 2030 strategy program is the consistently customer-centric orientation of the organization and all business activities. In addition, the tire sector aims to continue to grow profitably and differentiate itself from its competitors in a rapidly changing market environment in the areas of sustainability and digital solutions.

Continental is expanding its General Tire portfolio for the earthmoving industry with the addition of the General TE95 tire. The tire impresses with high traction, especially for soil compaction work in road and construction applications, and is equipped with V.ply technology. The first General Tire earthmoving tires were launched in early 2020 – the portfolio now includes a total of 33 sizes in the United States and Canada, which are used on wheel loaders, dozers, dump trucks, and scrapers as well as graders, skid steer loaders and backhoes.

General TE95: High stability and traction performance

The optimized tire contour of the General TE95 ensures even pressure distribution on construction vehicles, such as single-drum compactors, which keeps construction site soil smooth during compaction. Because sandy, muddy or stony soil can prove challenging, the General TE95’s geometric, robust tread blocks were also specifically designed to provide continuous traction performance in a variety of soil conditions.

Damage resistance and high load-bearing capacity thanks to V.ply technology

Its V.ply construction technology ensures strong sidewalls, providing optimal protection against punctures and cuts. V.ply technology combines the advantages of cross-ply tires and radial tires, by integrating a weave pattern of different strands laid out at special angles. Since the steel cord does not provide an optimal bond between the carcass and the rubber casing, V.ply technology uses a high-strength polymer.

The carcass of a General Tire V.ply tire consists of up to 22 layers of diagonal fibers embedded in three-wire cores and precisely aligned in a V-pattern. Unlike conventional cross-ply tires, the intersecting textile layers of a V.ply tire are arranged at an angle of approximately 30 degrees. Together with the sidewall layers, this provides increased tire stiffness and enables a higher level of stability and durability during sudden movements and cornering.

The comprehensive product portfolio for earthmoving applications

The General TE95 complements the existing General Tire Earthmoving range. As of now, Continental’s tire portfolio for the earthmoving industry in the United States and Canada consists of the following tires:

General TE65: Low aspect ratio and wide base for wheel loaders and dozers used in heavy-duty digging and loading operations

General TE191: Heavy-duty wheel loader tires for digging and loading operations

General TE6: Bidirectional L3 tire ideal for skid steer loaders
