The eFuzion concept – a spectrum of innovative technology in a single concept machine

At this year’s bauma, Japanese manufacturer Yanmar is presenting an original new concept vehicle to the public for the first time. Packed with innovative technology, the eFuzion concept demonstrates the depth and breadth of Yanmar’s global R&D, investing efforts in developing and implementing innovative technologies to inspire creativity and unleash future possibilities. Yanmar is a leading global manufacturer of industrial equipment, and market leader in compact construction equipment. The eFuzion concept, primarily developed by Yanmar’s robotics research team, is a working demonstration of a precision machine with a robot arm that shows the possibilities of autonomous construction machinery of the future.

The eFuzion concept – sustainable technologies for the future

The eFuzion concept is a vehicle from Yanmar’s research centers to demonstrate technologies for tomorrow’s industry and production that are at an advanced level of development. “All key technologies of e-mobility, robotics, connectivity, autonomous driving and computer-assisted operations have been integrated into our eFuzion concept,” explains Giuliano Parodi, Chairman and CEO of YANMAR Construction Equipment. “With eFuzion, we can prove our strengths in innovation and demonstrate that we are developing technologies that will further revolutionize industry 4.0.”

The eFuzion concept moves autonomously in a specially designed eCubator, a 6 x 6-meter cube. The networked, intelligent vehicle carries out all-electric, autonomous operations under its own programming. In the eCubator demonstration, the eFuzion machine utilizes its precision fine motor control by selecting red balls with its robotic arm, before adding the respective red ball to another box, gradually creating the Yanmar logo. The two different processes illustrate how the machine performs an excavation task autonomously, while avoiding or overcoming obstacles such as those that occur on a construction site. In the second case, the machine is operated manually to grab an object on the construction site.

The name eFuzion concept derives from “e” for electric and “Fu” for future, and symbolizes the digitization and transformation of processes in business and industry. The surface of the eCubator, a 6 x 6-meter cube, changes from opaque to transparent, making the concept machine visible, but only does so for demonstration purposes. The name intends to invoke associations with “incubator”, as in start-ups and their disruptive ideas. The technologies behind such disruptions, which change processes in industry and economy, are under development at Yanmar’s R&D centers.

The eFuzion concept is by no means a stand-alone demonstrator of technology. Rather, it is the result of Yanmar’s extensive technology and research foundation, which, together with proven technologies from other Yanmar business segments, is the result of the company’s own research and development activities.

Volvo Construction Equipment’s updated EW60E wheeled excavator features improved hydraulics for greater control and task flexibility – all in a versatile and fuel-efficient package

The newly updated EW60E wheeled excavator from Volvo Construction Equipment is now even more versatile and powerful than ever before. Now with greater fuel efficiency and improved hydraulics, the EW60E makes light of a wide range of excavator tasks.

Among the new features is a new hydraulic main control valve that offers additional functionality. When a higher hydraulic flow is required for a particular movement, the main control valve is able to combine the flow of several pumps to optimize the machine operation. Particularly for grading, flow can be combined into the arm cylinder to make arm speed faster. Not only is the EW60E now more versatile, it is also more efficient. This comes courtesy of a new engine management feature – ECO mode. Fitted as standard, ECO mode lowers the engine speed – but without any impact on performance, resulting in reduced fuel consumption.

The EW60E is equipped with a number of features

Go with the flow

For high controllability, productivity and a comfortable operating experience the EW60E is equipped with responsive controls that ensure smooth movements, as well as adjustable hydraulic flow. Four-wheel drive and a top speed of 30kmph guarantee excellent mobility on and off road. Well-balanced driveline, and the front axle locks while working for optimum stability. An optional fixed boom and offset boom provide versatile performance in a range of operations from confined jobsites to major construction areas.

The new Volvo engine complies with forthcoming Stage V regulations. With the auto engine shutdown option – a unique offering from Volvo – the engine stops automatically after a pre-selected time, lowering fuel costs and noise. A consequence of the engine being inactive is reduced maintenance costs and improved resale value of the machine.

The EW60E is equipped with a number of features combined to increase machine availability and reduce downtime. Ground level service access and convenient greasing points reduce service time and maintenance costs. Service intervals can easily be monitored via the in-cab screen, which shows reminders when maintenance is needed.

This excavator is equipped with Volvo MATRIS software that analyzes operator behavior to improve efficiency, boost productivity and reduce fuel and maintenance costs. Volvo also offers the VCADS Pro diagnostic system, making it easy to control the machine.

Bobcat is launching a new Remote Control System for Bobcat compact loaders. This system allows operators to leave their seat in the cab and control their Bobcat loader remotely. It is compatible with Bobcat skid-steer, compact track and all wheel steer loader models equipped with the company’s Selectable Joystick Controls. Bobcat is the first manufacturer to introduce a Remote Control System as original ‘Plug&Play’ equipment, rather than offering it as an add-on development from a third party. The new system will be commercially available later this year.

Remote control solutions have proved their qualities and abilities to save lives in the toughest environments all around the world by providing service during disasters like floods, forest fires, mud or rock slides and in other places where operators can be subjected to dangerous situations.

“We first presented our remote control prototype at Bobcat Demo Days in October 2017 with excellent feedback from our customers, then subjected it to further improvements, testing and licensing, before finally introducing it as an easy ‘Plug&Play’ solution for existing machines here at Bauma for commercial launch,” says Jiri Karmazin, Loaders Product Manager Doosan Bobcat EMEA.

“The remote control system can be used in many applications with the focus on limitless visibility, the ability to communicate with the surroundings without the need to be present in the cab, comfort enhancement for applications with noise, vibration and harshness or even in dangerous areas. This was the voice of our customers and the issues we observed on most jobsites,” Jiri Karmazin continued.

The new plug and play system comprises an easily portable and industrial radio remote control solution that can be mounted and dismounted on machines in a matter of minutes, leaving behind the standard machine in its original form. Being able to control the loader from outside the cab offers the operator a completely new and alternative opportunity in terms of visibility and communication.

Not only does it provide direct sight of the progress of work with a range of attachments, further increasing the versatility of the loader and a comprehensive range of attachments including angle brooms, augers, breakers, buckets, snow blowers or trenchers and wheelsaws where the operator specifically needs to drive backwards with the loader and this solution offers perfect visibility of the project. It also allows operators to talk face-to-face with project partners and manage the surroundings (verbally or non-verbally) at the same time.

                                                                       Remote control system

Increased Safety and Productivity

Remote control aims to increase safety, comfort and productivity by distancing the operator from dust, noise, vibrations and other hazards encountered at the workface or on job sites that require special safety precautions. Work can be done faster with higher precision and, in some applications, with fewer personnel on the job site. For increased safety, the system also features an emergency stop button and drop and tilt detection.

Every remote-control kit is protected by a dedicated password, with two-way communication providing all the important information about the loader (such as fuel and oil status, warnings, etc.) on a 3.5-inch transflective colour backlit LCD display. The system provides most of the functions that can be performed via direct loader operation, including throttle, light, creep and float controls. There is also speed management control to ensure easier operation in certain applications (such as trenching, tilling, scarifying and so on). The system in very intuitive to use and the training for end users will be provided by Bobcat dealers.

The remote control system is supplied with two exchangeable batteries offering a long 20-hour battery life. The protective case ensures it is easier to transport from one job site to another. This forms part of an updated state-of-the-art ergonomic design with the system housed in a rugged and weatherproof enclosure.

As mentioned above, applications include demolition environments with poor air quality and distracting noise, where the remote control system gives the operator the ability to do work from a distance, free from dirt, dust and noise. For construction work that normally requires two people, this solution can cut labour numbers and costs, as only one operator can complete the job themselves by carrying out work with attachments from outside the cab.

In shipyards with limited space, distancing the operator from the machine keeps them away from hazardous chemicals and other airborne pollutants. The job can be done more easily, with better visibility for managing tight spaces in and around containment areas.

In the waste and recycling industries, the remote control solution allows operators to handle dangerous or toxic materials from a safe distance, minimizing the risk of exposure. With the remote control solution, operators can work on hazardous applications (such as detecting and removing land mines) and also in areas where more visibility is needed to do the job properly (such as in some road applications).

The E-Series compact excavators by Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) provide the agility and go-anywhere flexibility to squeeze themselves into the tightest of spaces. The EC15E, EC18E and EC20E are small but tough models that replace the previous D Series of excavators, while the short-swing ECR18E is a new addition to Volvo CE’s compact range.

The E-Series models have a common platform that is built with durability in mind. All round steel panels are safely recessed 10mm behind the Volvo exclusive high-profile cast iron counterweight, which ably provides protection and digging stability. With a machine height of a little over 2m and a variable undercarriage that can shrink to less than 1m – these new models can gain access to even the most confined of work areas. Once in position, the undercarriage can expand up to 1.35m for additional stability. The design ensures that the right frame corner, swing post and cylinder all stay within the tracks, resulting in maximum visibility and a reduced risk of machine damage when working alongside obstacles.

Volvo EC18E

Safe and easy operation

It may be able to squeeze into tight spaces, but operators will find that the cab environment of these compact excavators is both roomy and uncluttered. With fingertip operation, a simple layout to the controls and large pedals, each new model is easy to operate – and offers smooth combined movements.

As with all Volvo machines, safety lies at the heart of the E-Series compact excavator range. A large entrance area and well positioned step and handrails help with entry and egress of the cab, and once in position the operator is secure, thanks to good visibility and a ROPS/TOPS/OPG1 cab and canopy as standard. Other security features include lockable controls that prevent movement if the operator is not sitting firmly on the seat, bright orange seatbelt and green flashing beacon that help site managers easily confirm that the seatbelt is being used by operators at all times.

Compact machines move around far more frequently than larger general-purpose machines, but Volvo has designed the E-Series to be fast, simple and safe to transport. These mini marvels feature automatic slew lock and four easily accessed tie-down points on the upper frame. Thanks to their light weight and the Volvo bucket transportation system, the machines can also be safely transported with up to three buckets and a hydraulic breaker on a compact truck or trailer.

Light heavyweight

The EC15E compact excavator builds on the success of its predecessor, which was a proven and popular machine, particularly in the rental sector. Not only is it lightweight, it is also the smallest in the Volvo range, allowing it to squeeze into the tightest of spaces. While at work the EC15E comes into its own, and like its big sisters, provides the ease-of-use and durability needed to work hard all day, every day. Easy maintenance and repair minimize downtime, helping to deliver a low total cost of ownership.
Small machines, BIG performance

The EC18E and EC20E take performance to a new level, with a 13 per cent increase in tractive force and respectively 2,130kg and 3,120kg of combined digging forces. Their lifting capacity has increased by an average of 22 per cent at the front compared to the D-Series they replace, plus an extra 7 per cent at the side on the EC20E. The 11 per cent longer undercarriage of the EC18E contributes to even better all-round lifting capacity and stability, compared to the previous generation, with a 140mm increase in digging depth. For further flexibility, the auxiliary hydraulic flows can be independently adjusted in each direction, ensuring optimal speed and control, and a second auxiliary line is also available as an option.
Short swing, big potential

The ECR18E is an entirely new model and features a short-swing design. Able to fit into the tightest of spaces, the ultra-short tail design gives it the smallest radius in the Volvo range. The unit is highly stable all through 360o of superstructure swing, and its variable undercarriage can retract to just 995mm or expand to 1,352mm. Ideal for working on congested jobsites, the new ECR18E complements the Volvo compact excavators offer, which so far comprises seven short swing radius models, ranging from 1.7 to 9.5 tonnes.
The complete package for maximum profitability<picture></picture>

The E-Series can be effortlessly maintained thanks to a hinged fuel tank unique to Volvo that offers up an impressive ease of access to the engine compartment, and easy-to-locate daily check points. A 50-hour greasing interval further contributes towards the best-in-class serviceability of these machines. The engine can also be fitted with auto idle and automatic engine shutdown features, which help reduce noise disturbance, service costs and fuel consumption – as well as ultimately ensuring a higher resale value. As with all Volvo models, the E-Series can be complemented with a range of attachments such as quick couplers, buckets, breakers, and Genuine Volvo Parts.

The all-new 1.7 tonne Electric powered 17SR concept will be debuted at BAUMA 2019

Following extensive research and innovation in partnership with German engine manufacturer, Deutz AG (Deutz), Kobelco Construction Machinery Europe B.V. (KCME) is proud to announce the launch of its first electric mini excavator concept. The arrival of the Kobelco Electric powered 17SR comes just three years after the European introduction of the pioneering SK210HLC-10 Hybrid excavator, and further reinforces the Japanese strmanufacttegyofredurer’scingits environmental impact. The Kobelco Electric powered 17SR concept can be seen for the first time at BAUMA 2019.

Innovation and technology is at the heart of KobelcoPrductphilosophy. Development Engineering Division and Advanced Technology Engineering Department in Japan were set up to help support the future of Kobelco construction machinery through the development of new and innovative technologies. Over the years, this support has enabled Kobelco to make huge strides forward in hybrid and electric technologies as well as develop its own unique iNDr (Integrated Noise and Dust Reduction Cooling System) technology, and innovative hydraulic systems for promoting low fuel consumption.

The development of the 1.7 tonne Electric powered 17SR mini excavator concept is borne from a combination of Kobelco’sexpertiseindeveloping highly efficient construction machinery for urban jobsites and Deutz’superior electric drive technology. Together, this combination will enable the Electric powered 17SR to deliver zero emissions, extremely low noise operation and reduced life cycle costs.

While the Electric powered 17SR we are showcasing at BAUMA is still a concept, we plan to further develop the machine in conjunction with Deutz over the next two years. Our objective is to manufacture a fully-electric mini excavator that will be capable of performing at the top of its class, with a long life battery for utmost convenience. With this in mind, we expect the Electric powered 17SR to launch to the European market in 2021.

Following the arrival of the Electric powered 17SR, Kobelco’s-termlongobjective is to further expand its machinery line-up to include more advanced technologies, including electric-driven excavators, in its pursuit of promoting a sustainable society.

Commenting on the introduction of the new Kobelco Electric powered 17SR, KCME Managing Director Makoto Kato said: “As an innovative and forward-thinking manufacturer, we are always looking for new ways to make our construction machinery as powerful and efficient as possible, while reducing our carbon footprint. The Kobelco Electric powered 17SR will be our first fully-electric mini excavator, which we believe will be a popular choice for urban and small construction jobsites in the very near future. We are excited to launch the concept at BAUMA this year and are looking forward to further developing this technology with Deutz ahead of the machine’sexpectedlaunch in 2021.”

A new Hitachi ZW220-6 wheel loader has been delivered to Leca to support its operations near the community of Avelar, where the Portuguese company has been mixing and exporting clay since 1969. The machine was supplied in June 2018 as part of a package of 10 Hitachi machines, with Zaxis-6 medium excavators also being distributed to Leca around its other European plants.

“At the time, we were looking for a central supplier,” explains Industrial Manager Bernardo Mendonça. “We made detailed specifications with precise technical requests and Hitachi presented the most appropriate and cost-effective solution. Our operators were also involved in the selection process and they were delighted with the performance of the Hitachi wheel loader.”

High availability

At the 10-hectare site, the ZW220-6 (video) is being used to mix three different types of clay, as well as feed the main chute that leads to Leca’s central processing plant. To help meet demand, the wheel loader must load 600m³ of mixed material into the system per 20-hour shift. The end result is five different types of porous clay that are exported for use in construction and agriculture.

According to Bernardo, the Hitachi wheel loader is perfectly suited to the task: “One of the biggest challenges we face in Avelar is the 24/7 operation, which means that the wheel loader is required to work constantly. For this reason, the high availability and reliability of the ZW220-6 make it the ideal solution.”

A new Hitachi ZX300LCN-6 medium excavator has been selected by Construções Gabriel A.S. Couto S.A. (Gabriel Couto) to help it construct a new taxiway and other access points at Porto Airport in the north of Portugal. The machine, delivered by authorised local Hitachi dealer Moviter, will support Gabriel Couto’s operations at the demanding 250,000m² site.

The first phase of the project involves excavating and earthmoving to prepare the area. For phase two Gabriel Couto will move to the airside where the taxiway will be extended and connected to the runway, and other facilities completed. The ZX300LCN-6 is being used for general earthmoving and levelling activities.

Selecting the best machines

The project is scheduled for completion in March 2020 and the arrival of the ZX300LCN-6 brings the number of Hitachi machines in Gabriel Couto’s fleet to 20. Director Tiago Couto has long been convinced of their reliability: “We purchased our first Hitachi machine (a 30-tonne excavator) 28 years ago and it worked productively for over 20 years.

“This year, we needed to increase our fleet in order to execute this important project. Therefore, I was looking for the best possible package of equipment from Moviter and Hitachi machines played a key role in my decision. Ultimately, we have to satisfy our client’s wishes, so the equipment we select is crucial in setting a benchmark and further improving our performance.”

Positive feedback

Tiago has been highly satisfied with the performance of the Hitachi ZX300LCN-6: “The maintenance is one of the best aspects about the excavator and this gives me confidence that it will keep on performing to a high standard. The positive feedback I have from my operators and maintenance teams also supports this.

“In addition, the resale value remains strong on Hitachi machines, which keeps their total cost of ownership competitive. The fuel consumption is continually improving with its newest excavators and the engines are more efficient than ever. Compared to others on the market, Hitachi excavators simply deliver the best productivity and the highest level of reliability.”

Updated family of Ditch Witch fluid management systems offers improved drilling fluid flow and increased durability on small- to mid-sized jobs

The Ditch Witch organization, a Charles Machine Works Company, has updated its line of fluid management systems to increase productivity and reduce costs on horizontal directional drilling (HDD) jobsites. These advanced models incorporate new design features to meet the highest standards for jobsite productivity, improved drilling fluid flow, increased durability, and faster mixing cycles and yield times.

The full line of fluid management systems includes the FT5, FM5X, FM13X and FM25X to meet the needs of any small- to mid-sized HDD project. The systems are equipped with tanks ranging from 200-gallon capacity to 950-gallon capacity, as well as powerful engines that supply up to 25 hp, depending on the model.

“Fluid management is a critical part of the HDD process,” said Cory Maker, Ditch Witch product manager, drill pipe and fluid systems. “Helping operators not only meet safety regulations, but increase productivity and yield, our updated line of fluid management systems set the standards for fluid management throughout the industry.”

The FM5X, FM13X and FM25X models feature an updated, internal venturi design that optimizes fluid velocity and increases overall system productivity. Additionally, a new, wet hopper design increases the venturi inlet from 1.25 to 2-inches – a 60 percent larger opening for material flow and superior fluid mixing. The tank on these units is designed with a sloping bottom to ensure all drilling fluid flows through the pump and is thoroughly mixed. A powder-coat finish provides durability, and helps with chipping, rust, and fading resistance for a longer useful life.

The FM25X system features multiple configuration options – including curbside and street side – to accommodate a variety of setups for easier transport, and offers fuel configurations from both sides of the unit to meet any jobsite need. The model utilizes a hydraulic circuit, providing operators the ability to run two tank systems simultaneously. By mixing one tank while a drill on-site is using mud from the other tank, the unit eliminates the need to stop a bore to mix fluid, further enhancing productivity and increasing uptime.
