Horsch and Trimble announced a collaboration focused on developing solutions that enable autonomy in agriculture with the goal of building a future for autonomous machines and workflows in the industry.

The collaboration extends beyond autonomously controlling machines, such as the self-propelled crop protection sprayers, to full workflow automation from the office to the field. This relationship integrates Trimble’s established autonomy expertise in guidance systems, path planning, and in-field process automation with Horsch’s fleet of machines.

The first phase will bring automation to the complex planning, machine control, and logistical challenges faced by sprayer operators to improve machine performance and reduce operating errors. This functionality can significantly reduce the driver’s workload, while still allowing them to intervene at any time. In the long term, this technology establishes a basis for operating fully autonomous machines.

Horsch and Trimble have successfully collaborated on implementing control technologies and are extending this to include full machine control solutions. The companies are currently implementing a high level of automation and driver support with steering systems. With this increase in automation, a driver can perform additional in-cab tasks during active fieldwork, such as the required documentation, planning, and coordination of work processes.

“Combining the forward-thinking nature of Horsch with Trimble’s cutting-edge autonomous technology creates an opportunity for the companies to develop innovative applications for the OEM and Trimble’s agriculture network. We are building new customer-focused solutions as part of our existing connected farm ecosystem to deliver a unique and compelling solution for our customers—simplifying the complex, logistical and operational challenges of modern agriculture,”

said Finlay Wood, business area director for Trimble Autonomous Solutions.

“The unique opportunity with this collaboration is not that we are presenting a future utopia but that we are moving step-by-step towards autonomy in a pragmatic, consistent manner. We consider automation in agriculture to be one of our next key technologies, and our goal is to ultimately deliver a platform of various applications to help farmers meet the challenges of the future,”

said Theo Leeb, managing director for Horsch.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau spoke with the European Union’s Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski.

Minister Bibeau and Commissioner Wojciechowski emphasized the strength of the Canada-EU relationship, especially in agricultural trade. They reiterated the need to work collaboratively to ensure a well-functioning integrated supply chain in food and food products between Europe and Canada, which is essential to safeguarding the health and wellbeing of citizens during COVID-19.

Both ministers also emphasized the need for free and open trade, especially in the current COVID-19 crisis, and benefits of the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), provisionally applied since September 2017.

In addition, Minister Bibeau emphasized that Canada and the EU need to co-operate to ensure that our farmers and processors benefit from the trade agreement, underscoring the importance of improving EU market access for Canadian agricultural products through the removal of technical barriers to trade.

“Maintaining strong trade with our European friends and allies will be essential for our economic restart. During my discussion with Commissioner Wojciechowski, I built upon the strength of that long-standing relationship and promoted the high-quality of Canadian agri-food products.”

said The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.

Quick facts

Since CETA provisionally went into effect in September 2017, exports of agriculture and agri-food to the EU have increased nearly 12% between 2016 (the last full year prior to CETA) and 2019. Some of the commodities to benefit the most from CETA tariff reductions are: cranberries (exports up 130%); fruits and nuts (up 84%); dog and cat food (up 22%); and maple sugar and syrup (up 15%).

Other commodities that saw exports increase in that time period are: canola seed (up 97%); kidney and white pea beans (up 30%); soya beans (up 13%); and corn (up 11%).

FBSciences is excited to announce a partnership agreement with Yara North America that will focus on developing and delivering innovative plant health solutions to growers across North America and bringing together the power of FBSciences technologies and products with Yara’s industry-leading calcium nitrate fertilizers.

FBSciences specializes in biosolutions including biostimulant and biopesticide technologies which form the foundation of comprehensive crop nutrition programs. FBSciences technologies have been tested for over a decade through more than 1500 trials and have proven over and over they deliver four key things:

healthier plants and increased yields;

increased quality and nutrient density;

stress mitigation and recovery;

increased utilization of other crop inputs.

FBSciences and Yara spent 2019 field testing the combination of FBSciences technologies and products with Yara’s leading fertilizers and the synergies and results were overwhelmingly positive for growers.

ZiCAN Soil is the first product to commercially launch in the United States as part of this new relationship. ZiCAN Soil was specially formulated to mix with YaraLiva liquid calcium nitrate fertilizers, including YaraLiva CAN-17 and YaraLiva CN-9. In independent testing on almonds, ZiCAN Soil and YaraLiva CAN-17 together picked up a 10.6% yield increase when compared to using YaraLiva CAN-17 alone. The results translate into an increase of 200 pounds per acre, which is $550 per acre (at $2.75 per pound). Traditional liquid zinc and calcium nitrate fertilizers don’t mix well and when combined create gypsum, resulting in clogging and cleaning issues. This problem leads to the need for separate applications. This unique formulation allows nitrogen, calcium, zinc, and manganese to mix together in the tank for perfect compatibility.

FBSciences technologies offer not only increased compatibility but also increased efficiency of other crop inputs. As a result, ZiCAN Soil not only promotes the uptake and translocation of the zinc and manganese in its own formulation but also enhances the uptake and translocation of several nutrients including calcium and nitrogen in YaraLiva CAN-17. This increased nutrient use efficiency will create meaningful increases in ROI for the farmer.
To leverage these synergies, FBSciences and Yara have agreed to design and commercialize additional calcium nitrate compatible products. These products will launch in 2020 across the United States. These products create tangible benefits to the grower and a significant return on investment throughout the value chain.

“FBSciences is very excited to announce this important relationship. The impact of making crop inputs more compatible, allowing for less applications and inputs, while also increasing performance and efficiency cannot be overstated. We share a common vision with Yara of being a leading change agent in achieving sustainability in agriculture through using less inputs while increasing agricultural productivity and profitability for growers. Working with a world-class partner like Yara gives us the reach needed to significantly advance this goal.”

says Courtenay Wolfe, chairman and CEO of FBSciences.

“We are a global leader in crop nutrition. We work closely with growers across the world to help improve agricultural productivity and farm performance. We have seen how FBSciences’ technology and products perform in the field, especially when combined with ours, and are confident that these new products represent the next generation of crop nutrition and a meaningful and sustainable step forward in agricultural productivity and farmer profitability.”

explains Debbie Watts, VP premium products for Yara.

Where other markets find a solution in upscaling, the Flemish and Dutch market need an alternative solution. Because the agricultural areas are smaller and more fragmented; upscaling is economically impossible.

CIMAT is a new Interreg Flanders-The Netherlands project focusing on the development of small-scale and versatile agro-robots that move towards a more sustainable agriculture. This development will move away from upscaling and focus on electrically powered robots that are modular to fit all needs of the farmer. As partner in this project, Octinion will continue the development on Titanion, the outdoor platform.

The project is called CIMAT, which is short for Catalyst for Innovative Mechatronic in Agricultural Technology.
