FPT Industrial is strengthening its already solid position in the construction equipment sector, with the new “E-Series” crawler excavators from CASE Construction Equipment to be powered by the company’s Stage V NEF engines.

Building on a legacy of earth-moving innovation spanning 180 years, CASE now presents the “E-Series” crawler excavators – where “E” stands for “Excellence” – ranging from 13 to 30- metric ton models: CX130E, CX160E, CX180E, CX210E, CX240E, CX250E, CX300E. They all feature best-in-class benefits, offering customers greater controllability, reliability, operator comfort, efficiency, productivity, and lower total cost of ownership (TCO), and are all powered by FPT Industrial’s NEF engines.

The choice of FPT Industrial NEF engines will guarantee an improved transient response
ensuring high reliability, thus responding to the demanding needs of this specific application. The E-Series CASE completes its Stage V offering confirming FPT Industrial as a strong partner.

The new E-Series incorporates more powerful and efficient Stage V engines, which offer
greater displacement while meeting stringent emissions requirements. The 13-18-metric ton models feature the N45, the 4.5-liter engine from the renowned NEF series, while the N67 (6.7-liter, 6-cylinder version from the same engine family) powers the 21-30-metric ton models.

The NEF engines powering the new CASE E-Series ensure optimal combustion efficiency
thanks to their EGR-free architecture, while the FPT-patented HI-eSCR2 after-treatment
system results in low running costs – this for-life system has no need for mechanical cleaning or replacement parts over its life cycle. High-capacity filters with clogging sensors deliver the best in-class service intervals of up to 1,000 hours, an outstanding improvement over previous solutions.

With the NEF engines powering this new range of excavators, more and more CASE
Construction vehicles are being supplied with an FPT engine. This provides advantages in the field, with the management of construction sites greatly simplified.

To allow the use of renewable fuels, NEF Stage V engines fitted on all E-Series models are compatible with EN15940-compliant fuels, such as the increasingly popular HVO (Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils).

Designed for the most demanding construction equipment missions, the NEF series is the foremost example of FPT Industrial’s technological excellence. Since 2001, more than 2 million engines have been manufactured for a wide range of applications: construction equipment, agriculture, on-road, marine, and power generation.

FPT Industrial’s offering for the earthmoving sector features engine families with power outputs ranging from 40 to 670 kW, and displacements of 2.8 to 20 liters. They can be installed on a number of applications such as excavators, wheel loaders, skid steer loaders, graders, dozers, forklifts, and cranes, amongst others.

With best-in-class performance in terms of power, torque, fuel efficiency, and reliability, the NEF series stands out for its flexibility, with 4- (N45) and 6- (N67) cylinder configurations, as well as a wide range of options to customize the solution to the customers’ requirements.

Both NEF engines and the HI-eSCR2 system for Stage V compliance are offered in a compact and lightweight package to facilitate installation on the vehicle, offering a wide range of after-treatment layouts for customized solutions.

Combining robustness, reliability, and performance, NEF engines have been chosen by huge
numbers of customers over the years for heavy-duty off-road applications.

“The new CASE E-Series excavators are a perfect example of how a combination of new and leading features can integrate and work together to deliver customers great and real benefits. We are proud to provide CASE Construction Equipment with powerful and efficient engine solutions granting the technological excellence they deserve and to do our very best to keep CASE at the top of such a competitive and demanding industry.

says Diego Rotti, Off-Road Product Marketing Manager of FPT Industrial.

OEM-Fit offering ensures the proper match of excavator and machine control solution from Leica Geosystems, part of Hexagon, and simplifies the acquisition process with a single financing package.

Case Construction Equipment introduces OEM-Fit 2D and 3D machine control solutions designed by Leica Geosystems, part of Hexagon — now available for Case D Series excavators from Case SiteControl Certified dealers.

This new option ensures that the optimal combination of machine and solution is installed and tested by Case-certified precision field specialists. It also simplifies the acquisition process and allows for the technology to be grouped in with the purchase of the machine — combining the financing or lease approval, rate, and payment in a single package.

“It takes the guesswork out of what solution works best with each machine and ensures that it is installed and tested by certified professionals before it’s delivered to the contractor. The excavator and the machine control system are optimally matched and calibrated — helping the owners and operators of each machine get up and running immediately upon delivery of the machine,”

says Nathaniel Waldschmidt, product manager, Case Construction Equipment.

OEM-Fit machine control solutions also increase the residual/resale value of each excavator, confirming to buyers on the secondary market that the system is designed and proven to work with the machine.

“Machine control has the ability to transform the productivity, efficiency, and long-term profitability of excavators. We’re now making the addition of machine control with excavators completely turnkey, allowing contractors to experience those benefits in an extremely seamless experience with their Case SiteControl Certified dealer,”

says Waldschmidt.

Imperial Contracting attacks the hard jobs with attitude, expertise, and a strong respect for what’s possible with the right combination of operator and machine.

Imperial — like a spartan going into battle. That’s how Wake Forest, NC-based Imperial Contracting approaches every job. The company – founded on the principle of tackling the tough jobs that other contractors can’t or don’t want to do – has mastered its craft.

“We are the contractor everybody calls when either somebody can’t do it, isn’t able to do it, or doesn’t want to do it. We say, get out of the way and we’ll make it happen. It falls back to just wanting to be better than the next guy.”

says Justin Santoro, owner, Imperial Contracting.

“We strive to be the best at every level of our company. We are built on the ability of my men, and the right equipment to do the job. Our work and the appearance of our equipment are the two things that make us who we are.”

he adds.

The contractor specializes in the construction and conversion of retention ponds in residential and commercial developments around North Carolina.

“Our work depends on the design of the engineer for the subdivision and how many ponds he/she allocated and fit in. All the water work comes to us, and everything that goes down the storm drain comes to us as well. We get everything from kids’ basketballs to copperhead snakes to snapping turtles, to just regular old mud and trash. The environment itself is a big challenge because literally, everything’s at the bottom.”

he jokes.

Naming and Owning Success

Santoro takes a fresh look at how he deploys his team and equipment into the field — equipment assignments are merit-based and each operator is expected to take care of the machine as if they own it themselves. And each machine has a name.

“Nothing has a relationship as a number. A relationship comes out of a name and knowing about it. You respect it. You name your equipment. It’s a living, breathing machine. Once you get inside it, you make it happen. It’s your control, everything that machine does. It needs to have a name.”

says Santoro.

He’s refined his fleet through the years and optimized it for working in residential areas – small enough to be easily transported to the site, and big enough to get the heavy work done. A typical equipment outlay on a job site looks like this:

A CASE CX210D excavator brought in to do the primary bulk earthmoving and mucking out.

A CASE 750M low ground pressure (LGP) dozer outfitted with machine control for final/finish grading.

A CASE 160D excavator outfitted with machine control and a tilting/rotational bucket for perfecting the slope and final grade of each pond. The bucket is oversized at 60 inches, but operators only use this machine for fine grading and contouring.

The machine control systems incorporated into each of the machines are indicate-only – Santoro relies on the experience of his operators and the precision of the equipment matched with the site plan to get each grade down to 1/10th of an inch to plan.

The CASE CX160D is a 112-horsepower excavator designed to be both powerful and responsive. Imperial operators are able to precision grade on slopes and down into the corners of the ponds, and other places that make it difficult for the dozer to get to. It also affords the company the ability to continue working in even the wettest conditions as Imperial can use the CX160D to grade the entire pond if needed.

“Really, 160 is a great machine. From the (previous model) to the D, it’s evolved into an even better excavator, with more comfort, more things that you really want every day. When you spend 10 to 12 hours a day in a machine, comfort, visibility, and ease of use are all very important. The 160 offers all of that and more.”

Santoro notes.

One additional advantage the CX160D gives the Imperial team is its precision. Each D Series excavator features an electronically controlled pump, a large control valve, and multiple sensors that combine with the CASE Intelligent Hydraulic System to make the best use of the machine’s hydraulic power and momentum — resulting in added strength, precision, and fuel efficiency.

“They’re amazing. They’re very comfortable and offer very smooth control. It doesn’t have a lot of stick-pull, it doesn’t delay, and it has great maneuverability. The speed is perfect which makes it easier for our operators to grade very precisely when they need to.”

says Santoro.

As for the dozer, the 750M features an advanced load management system, large hydraulic pumps, and motors — Imperial’s operators love the strength and the agility of the machines.

“It has the power we need to run dirt from the filling process to the finish grading. It is one of the most versatile machines in our fleet, actually one of the most versatile machines periods. The right power with the right weight, with the right ability to get the job done.”

says Santoro.

The low ground pressure design also comes in handy when working in soil conditions that are often reflective of being at the lowest point in development.

“The LGP holds better with the soft materials that we experience a lot of. It’s versatile on the slopes. You get better traction when walking big slopes and trying to grade them. It just has a better ground pressure ability for us.”

Santoro says.

In addition to the power and versatility, CASE also took operator comfort and line-of-sight into consideration when developing the dozer. Its cab has floor-to-ceiling glass doors providing maximum visibility to the blade and out ahead of the machine. It also features a pressurized cab and advanced sealing that makes the cab extremely quiet with a decibel rating of 75 dBa. The combination of performance and ease-of-use works well for Santoro.

“The 750 has the ability to go from precision work to bulk work and between. It just adapts right to it.”

says Santoro.

Dealer Support helps Imperial Conquer All

Relationships built over time, forged in a collaborative approach to getting the best result for all involved have long been the approach of Carolinas-based Hills Machinery. Santoro and the Imperial team have appreciated that as the company has grown, and Hills has played a major role in why Imperial continues to choose CASE for its fleet.

“It matters to know somebody cares. Knowing they’re there for you when you need them makes a big difference. And then, when you’re thinking, I got to buy a new machine, it is easy to turn to the guys who take care of you. That’s Hills in a nutshell.”

Santoro says.

As for service and uptime, Imperial relies heavily on Hills and takes full advantage of CASE ProCare. ProCare is a comprehensive machine support offering that comes standard on all new CASE heavy equipment — protecting it for up to three years and keeping owning and operating costs predictable.

“ProCare is huge for us. When we look at the overall cost of a machine and then the cost of the upkeep for the first three years, in those first three, we’re not responsible for any services or oil changes. On top of that, Hills is going through our machines, making sure there are no issues. It’s a great add-on and it doesn’t come with an extra price tag. It more than pays for itself in the first three years.”

Santoro notes.

“I have been around CASE equipment a long, long, long time. It proved itself on the farm that I grew up on. All the tractors we ran then were CASE. The dozer we had was a CASE. It proved itself very able to do everything that we’re looking for. I’ve never had a bad experience with CASE equipment, and we have excavators that have 6,000 and 7,000 hours on them.”

Santoro concludes, thinking back to when he first operated equipment as a young man.

All-in-all, Santoro believes he has equipped his team to succeed. With pride, a sense of ownership, and equipment support and design that matches his own drive and tenacity, Imperial will continue to make its mark in the Carolinas.

“Imperial, I believe, means you never surrender, and you never quit. We don’t quit. We work seven days a week and we get the job done right every time.”

Case Construction Equipment debuts the all-new DL550B — the industry’s first fully integrated compact dozer loader. Unveiled at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2017 as a concept machine named “Project Minotaur”, the DL550B leverages the footprint of a compact track loader (CTL) with the chassis-integrated C-frame and blade of a dozer to create a powerful two-in-one machine for grading and loading applications.

“Our goal with this ‘concept’ was to see it through all the way. The DL550B is here today as the result of the passion and drive of our engineering, product validation and manufacturing personnel, the real-world operators who spent hundreds of hours running prototypes around the country, as well as the enthusiasm shown by the construction industry in providing feedback to how this machine should perform in the field.”

says George MacIntyre, product manager for compact equipment, Case.

The DL550B features a true dozer-style undercarriage for optimal dozing performance and is available in either steel or rubber track configurations to provide contractors with extreme flexibility based on the types of turf/jobs they work on. It will also feature Case Universal Machine Control, which allows it to be outfitted straight from the dealer with any of the three major suppliers of grade/machine control technologies. It will also be compatible with Case SiteControl CoPilot, which provides a mastless machine control experience with basic control of slope/grade.

The machine weighs approximately 18,000 pounds and operates at 114 horsepower. It is also available with an optional fully integrated ripper and is compatible with a wide range of heavy-duty attachments that make it suitable for everything from initial site clearing to finish grading.

Case dealers will begin taking orders for the DL550B in Q4 2020 with units arriving in 2021.

Core Operational Elements of the DL550B

The DL550B features a six-way blade and a c-frame that attaches directly into the chassis and primary coupler of the machine. This design provides the stability and smooth operating plane of a small dozer and ensures that all operating power and stress is channeled through the chassis instead of the attachment coupler and arms of the machine (compared to a basic dozer blade attachment on a CTL).

“A standard CTL with a dozer blade attachment can be effective for occasional work, but that combination doesn’t provide true six-way blade performance, or the long-term precision possible with the DL550B. This design is much better for strength and reliability as the pushing power is channeled through the entire machine. We have also integrated dozer controls for a much more intuitive experience for the operator versus the complicated control arrangement that comes with a common attachment blade.”

says MacIntyre.

Transitioning to a CTL-style operation is easy: The operator simply hydraulically detaches the C-frame and blade to match up with a bucket, forks or hundreds of other attachments available for skid steers and CTLs. The machine comes standard with a 1.25 cubic-yard bucket, available with either a cutting edge or SmartFit teeth system.

Major changes to the DL550B compared to the original concept at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2017 include an evolution from radial to a vertical lift geometry and an increase in rated operating capacity from 4,500 pounds up to 5,500 pounds (at 50 percent tipping load).

“We found that the vertical lift pattern helped us achieve both the dozing performance we were looking for while also expanding its ability to serve as a high-capacity CTL. The vertical lift pattern allows us to reach deeper into trucks, and additional enhancements in machine structure and performance allowed us to increase the rated operating capacity by 1,000 pounds, making the DL550B one of the most powerful and versatile machines ever built within this footprint.”

continues MacIntyre.

The DL550B also offers auxiliary hydraulic options that exceed any of the CTLs in the current Case lineup — up to 40 gallons per minute at 4,100 psi — which matches well with high-speed attachments such as mulchers and grinders for heavy duty land clearing and site development work.

“We envision the DL550B as the next great two-in-one machine that will help simplify fleet management and expand service offerings for its owners. “From landscapers to residential contractors, smaller businesses that have thought about buying a small-frame dozer to expand will now get comparable performance out of a machine that also doubles as a CTL — a machine platform that they are likely already operating.”

Building an Intuitive Operator Experience

The DL550B features electro-hydraulic dozer joysticks that also operate similar to ISO controls in skid steers and CTLs — changing from dozer to CTL operating function is as simple as the push of a button. Forward and reverse travel, and steering, is controlled with the left hand while boom and bucket controls are manipulated by the right hand when operating in CTL mode. Those same right-hand controls operate the lift, angle and tilt functions of the six-way blade when in dozer mode. Popular Case dozer features such as blade shake, as well as manual pitch adjustment, are also incorporated.

The machine is compatible with a full complement of 2D and 3D machine control solutions to further transform it into a precise grading platform, from sub-base up to finish grade — especially on smaller yards or jobsites where larger dozers or graders may not be able to gain access. It will be available with Case Universal Machine Control — a system that provides a universal harness for blade guidance systems, universal machine brackets and mounts, and universal jumpers to integrate any industry solution into the machine. This allows the DL550B to be deployed, straight from the dealer, into any fleet-wide precision or machine control solution an owner/operator/contractor may deploy on their jobsites.

It is also compatible with Case SiteControl CoPilot. This easy-to-use system allows operators to set a desired slope/grade reference and automatically holds that slope/grade without the need for lasers, masts or GPS—regardless of underfoot conditions—enabling both seasoned and less-experienced operators to easily achieve and maintain a smooth surface, slope or grade throughout the work area. Once the operator has set the slope/grade specifications, the system automatically adjusts the blade position to produce a reliable and consistent quality surface, eliminating the need for additional passes and re-work, and reducing fuel and labor costs.

The machine benefits from the all-new operator interface enhancements recently introduced with the Case B Series skid steers and CTLs, including an 8-inch LCD multifunction display that serves as its control center. It features an integrated backup camera, core machine settings, trip meters, service interval information and machine operating status details similar to an automotive dashboard. The DL550B is also available with CASE SiteWatch telematics to further streamline fleet management and planned maintenance activities.
