Population Growth Driving Demand for Agricultural Technologies

At the EIMA exhibition held from November 6-10 in Bologna, Italy, the Italian Agricultural Machinery Manufacturers Federation (FederUnacoma) hosted a conference presenting a market analysis of the agricultural machinery sector. Several key points were discussed during the event.

Population growth, a major driver of the increasing demand for agricultural technologies, will play a pivotal role in Africa, especially in countries like Nigeria, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

While established markets in Europe and North America will continue to invest heavily to maintain high-quality standards, major players in Asia, such as India and China, are expected to stabilize their mechanized farming practices after significant advancements in recent years. However, the most dynamic growth is anticipated in Southeast Asia and Africa.

Regions experiencing rapid population growth will see a surge in demand for agricultural machinery. These areas are undergoing significant agricultural development and require more advanced technologies to address the challenges of feeding expanding populations.

Indonesia is a prime example. With a population approaching 300 million, it ranks among the world’s most populous nations and is poised for continued demographic growth. Over the past 15 years, Indonesia’s imports of agricultural machinery have steadily increased, rising from EUR 140 million in 2009 to nearly EUR 700 million in 2023—an average annual growth rate of 8.6%. Looking ahead to 2024-2027, imports are expected to continue growing at an annual rate of 6.7%.

Other Southeast Asian countries are also experiencing strong growth in agricultural machinery imports. Vietnam, with a population of 100 million, anticipates an annual growth rate of 6.2% over the next four years. The Philippines, home to 110 million people, expects imports to grow by 7.8% annually. Meanwhile, Thailand, with 71 million residents, is projected to shift from a slow growth rate of just 1% per year over the last 15 years to a more robust increase of 6.8% annually from 2024 to 2027.

Population growth will also be a key driver in Africa, where regions like Sub-Saharan Africa are expected to account for 50% of global population growth by 2050. Nigeria, which already has 230 million people, is projected to exceed 400 million by 2050, making it the third most populous country in the world. Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, both with populations exceeding 100 million, are also expected to experience significant growth, entering the ranks of the 10 most populous countries over the next 20 years.

In Nigeria, only 46% of cultivable land is currently being used for agriculture, while the Democratic Republic of Congo is utilizing just 10% of its arable land. Expanding agricultural land is a top priority for these countries, and as they look to bring more land into production, the demand for agricultural technologies will increase dramatically. Over the next few years, agricultural machinery imports in Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo are projected to grow by 7% and 12% per year, respectively, from now until 2027. This growth is expected to accelerate even further over the next two decades.

The machine is available in mechanical (DM) or hydraulic (DH) version, the substantial difference of which lies in the equipment of hydraulically motorised operating heads.

One of the peculiarities of the Sicma machine is the possibility of mounting the frame both at the rear and front which means being able to both satisfy the operator’s preferences relating to management of the machines and correct balancing of the tractor and the option of setting up a work site with double equipment.

The supporting frame consists of telescopic elements, with synchronous opening with manual or electro-hydraulic control, which protrude only on the one side in the case of one element or on both sides if with double element. There are a variety of ranges of widths that allow adaptation to the usual inter-row widths of orchards.

• Rotary harrows
• Blades
• Dozer anchors
• Double/triple furrow star discs
• Sucker removers
• Mower discs
• Finger weeders in various diameters and rubber hardnesses.

Ebert replaces Cyndee Smiley who was recently named Sales Operation Manager for the John Deere Ag & Turf Division in the U.S. and Canada. Laurel Caes, Public Relations Manager for North American Ag continues in her current role and now reports to Ebert.

Ebert joined John Deere as an intern in 2009 with the National Training Group. In 2010 he worked as a Marketing Representative before supporting dealers as a Solution Specialist in the Corn Belt and northern Delta regions of the U.S. Since then, he has worked in multiple marketing roles at John Deere involving tractors, harvesting equipment and technology. Most recently at ISG, he managed strategic business relationships with other companies to deliver key precision-ag solutions for mutual customers.

Ebert has Bachelor of Science degrees in Agronomy and Agribusiness from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. He completed his Master of Business Administration from Indiana University and has a Master of Science in Agricultural Economics from Purdue University.

In his new role, Ebert is responsible for work across the John Deere Ag & Turf Division and with ISG leaders to develop a consolidated internal and external communication plan for the division. His work will include employee communications, public relations, media relations, marketing communications and tactical marketing while developing specific communication materials on behalf of the division.

“We will also be working closely with the federal government on areas noted in the budget that have been earmarked for consultative review,” noted CFA President Mary Robinson. “Overall, it appears this budget is a step in the right direction.”

Some of the announcements that are of particular importance to the agriculture sector include the development of a National Food Policy which provides a platform through which CFA hopes will enable a whole-of-government approach to Canadian Agri-Food policy, an initiative CFA has been calling for since 2011. This policy will focus on tackling food waste, improving community access to healthy food and will shine a spotlight on Canadian food both at home and abroad. CFA looks forward to working with a number of key departments and industry stakeholders to ensure this policy helps leverage the sector’s immense economic potential, in meeting ambitious growth targets set by the Agri-food Economic Strategy table for agri-food exports and domestic sales.

One important initiative within the National Food Policy is a 3-year agricultural immigration pilot that CFA has called for, which is an excellent addition to the recently announced rural immigration pilot. For decades farm labour has been and continues to be a critical issue for farmers, and while CFA awaits further details on this announcement, programs like this are critical in helping alleviate critical labour shortages while creating a skilled agricultural workforce for the future in Canada.

CFA is pleased to see the call for small business deduction relief for farmers and fishers selling to affiliated corporations. These deductions will ensure farmers and fishers regain access to their small business deduction, enabling producers unduly affected by changes announced in 2016 to invest in their businesses, making them more efficient, sustainable and profitable over time.

The commitment of $5 – 6 billion to provide high-speed internet to 100% of Canada by 2030 is vital for farmers to be able to conduct simple day to day e-commerce as well as embrace cutting-edge precision agriculture technology. High speed internet is essential in the development of rural Canada in general

CFA also notes the support for Supply Managed sectors following the ratification of trade deals such as CETA and the CPTPP. However, the details of these provisions must be looked at more closely and CFA will work with its Supply Managed members to assess these provisions and ensure they adequately respond to the loss of markets that came about through concessions made under both agreements.

Finally, CFA is pleased to see the continued push for regulatory modernization, building on announcements made in 2018’s Fall Economic Statement. In pursuing regulatory roadmaps that create a more responsive, adaptive, and user-friendly regulatory system, Canadian producers look forward to modernization efforts aimed at enabling more timely access to innovative products and reduced costs associated with unnecessary regulatory burden.

CFA will continue to assess and examine the details in the budgetary recommendations to evaluate the true impact it will have on the success of Canadian Agriculture.
