The H423 harvester head works on the 1070G, 1170G and 1270G wheeled harvester base machines and is ideal for thinnings and other fellings, where the tree diameter at chest height (BHD) is 150-350 mm. With improved hose routing from boom to harvester head, and from valve block to feed motors, this attachment offers improved durability, easy hose replacement, and improved hose protection with modifications to the frame. It has an operating range of minimum diameter at chest height (BHD) 40 mm to a maximum of 500 mm.

The H425 harvester head for the larger size class is available on the 1270G and 1470G wheeled harvester-based machines. This attachment is ideal for final fellings and other fellings where the tree diameter at chest height (BHD) is 250-500 mm. Also including improved hose routing from loader to harvester head and from valve block to feed motors, the hoses are routed through the frame and well protected within the structures, improving durability. Additionally, the H425HD harvester head added to the H425 model offers an HD tilt frame, expander pins in the upper end of the tilt cylinder, feed motor arms, and lower delimbing knives.

Owner Adam Lieder recalls the search:

“We have land clearing guys with shears, but we didn’t have an excavator large enough to bust up big wood. We looked at other avenues that would allow us to process some of our bigger wood into more manageable pieces.”

he says.

The landscaper found the Black Splitter through an internet search. After making a positive connection with owner Eric Ransome, the company was convinced that the S2 800 was the right fit for its machine and operation.

Out on the Limb’s previous process needed improvement, according to Lieder.

“We were just trying to just get rid of nasty bones wherever we could. We were basically cutting it down to firewood size and putting it on the log splitter.”

he says with a laugh.

The S2 800 is designed to fit all sizes of compact excavators, but Out on the Limb has it mounted on a Bobcat E45 Mini Excavator. A quick coupler allows for a quick switch between machines as needed. The Black Splitter can usually be found processing wood in the company’s yard, or in tow on a trailer to a local worksite. Most onsite removals and cuts are done with a rotating grapple, but Out on the Limb often uses the Black Splitter to breakdown larger, gnarlier trees and stumps.

Seymour and surrounding towns are heavily wooded with an abundance of mature trees so Out on the Limb often takes down and disposes of large, off-size timber. Logs under eight feet cannot be sold, and yet they’re also too large to dispose of easily.

“With the Black Splitter, we can take these large, knotty sections, bust them down into a manageable size, chip it, and sell the chips. We can also break down six-footers into four sections and drop it off at someone’s house for a pack of cheap firewood.”

he says.

The S2 800 is in its glory back at the yard when processing and feeding wood to a Morbark 20/36 Whole Tree Drum Chipper. The crew usually sorts garbage wood and logs into separate piles and begins breaking them down when the mound gets too large.

“When we’re in processing mode, we throw the Black Splitter on and hammer down,”

says Lieder.

The increased productivity is noticeable but the greater value for Out on the Limb is in being able to turn once unusable materials into a new revenue stream.

“We’re taking byproducts that we couldn’t do anything with and turning them into a usable product,”

Lieder says.

Out on the Limb re-grinds wood chips and dyes them to make mulch. The finished product is sold to commercial customers and given to homeowners for free because there is no demand for the chips with the abundance of trees in this part of Connecticut.

“These chips are a usable product to somebody somewhere, and they’re easy to get rid of because homeowners like them. Now I can keep Joe Smith happy because he gets a free load of wood chips and I don’t have to look at this big, gnarly piece of pine that I have no use for.”

he says.

Lieder says his crews deal with virtually every type of northeastern tree including Pine, Oak, Ash, Hickory, Maple, Spruce, and Hemlock. Out on the Limb has not encountered any wood that the Black Splitter could not handle, but they find Hickory to be the most challenging because of its stringiness. In these cases, the excavator operator simply engages the spinning motion of the S2 800 and sweeps between the log sections to break the strands.

Out on the Limb’s use of the Black Splitter is sporadic.

“We don’t run the S2 800 every day, but a few weeks ago we ran it for a week straight. I couldn’t even tell you how many hundreds of yards of wood chips we produced.”

Lieder says.

The S2 800 also helps with a trend among homeowners that’s resulting in increased processing for Out on the Limb. Homeowners in decades past often asked for firewood to be left on-site, as opposed to today’s homeowners that want everything hauled away.

This means less time in the field breaking down wood and cleaning up sawdust and more time hauling and processing it.

“It’s cheaper for us to just haul it offsite and try to figure out something later than it is to sit there and cut up firewood and sawdust in someone’s yard. It’s a win-win because I don’t have to clean up sawdust in the yard and we’re making a bad byproduct into good byproduct, which is obviously the number one goal.”

Lieder says.

Lieder sees the possibility of buying a larger excavator and Black Splitter model in the future.

“If we keep on growing, we’ll probably add another bigger Black Splitter and keep on doing what we’re doing. It seems to be working.

There when needed

The firefighting equipment is delivered to the fire location as a single package – and after it has been connected to forest machine hydraulics, the equipment is ready to operate. The 10 m³ water tank of the firefighting equipment can be filled with its own pump from a natural water source or the tank of a fire truck. The water cannon has a range of 47 meters and a turning radius of 360 degrees.

A carefully thought-out system

• An economical solution – the forwarder can be engaged in productive forest operations when the firefighting equipment is not needed.
• The water tank withstands the use of various chemicals mixed with water, as well as seawater. It is also light enough to be lifted into the machine load space.
• The powerful pump can fill the water tank from a natural water source or the tank of a fire truck.
• The wireless remote controller can adjust the water spray direction vertically and horizontally, as well as the spray pattern.

The local rescue department is responsible for planning firefighting activities. A properly trained rescue employee is responsible for the safety of firefighting. Rescue personnel operate the firefighting equipment and guide the forest machine operator’s actions when putting out fires.

AGCO Corporation announces a new family of economical compact tractors ― the Massey Ferguson 1800E and 2800E Series. The new lineup replaces the 1700E and 2700E Series and includes five models ranging from 24 to 57.3 engine horsepower. All are equipped with dependable Iseki diesel engines, offer greater hydraulic capacity, and sport the bold new styling common across the Massey Ferguson tractor line.

These new tractors are engineered and built for heavy-duty jobs and tough applications. A cast steel rear end and cast front axle, 4-wheel drive, and high-capacity hydraulics provide the weight, muscle, and traction to tackle demanding jobs, such as transporting round bales, skidding logs, or moving heavy gravel, topsoil, and other bulk materials. The E Series can be equipped with a broad range of implements and attachments, making them an economical and versatile choice for property owners, livestock producers, landscapers, hobby farms, municipalities, and commercial contractors.

Hydraulic performance gets a boost

New E Series compact tractors offer up to 18 percent greater hydraulic capacity than the previous generation. The dual-pump high-flow system provides more responsive power at low engine speeds, allowing operators to throttle back to reduce noise while maintaining full steering and implement function and control.

The open station offers convenient, easy-to-use controls

All E Series models feature an open station with a wide, uncluttered platform to provide ample room and comfort for the operator. All controls are logically arranged, easy to reach, and simple to understand ‒ advantages beginning operators will appreciate.

The E Series compact tractors also benefit from an updated design with a newly styled hood and fresh decals, reflecting the look of larger Massey Ferguson utility and row-crop tractors. Operators can still count on the solid metal hood and fenders, which are stronger and less susceptible to damage than plastic hoods found on other compact tractors.

Choice of simple mechanical or smooth hydrostatic transmissions

The E Series compacts are standard equipped with a proven 8F x 8R Synchro Shuttle transmission. This rugged mechanical-gear transmission provides a wide range of working and transport speeds from 0.8 to 16.6 mph (1.4 to 26.8 km/h), depending on tire size and type. It’s an ideal choice when performing jobs such as mowing or rotary tilling when consistent working speeds must be maintained. A handy forward/reverse mechanical shuttle shift provides easy direction changes – great for loader work.

An optional 3-range hydrostatic transmission also is available. Simple and convenient, it allows the operator to reach the speed needed within each range without shifting gears.

The 1800E models offer a Category I rear 3-point hitch, while the 2800E models are equipped with a Cat. I/II 3-point hitch with up to 2,425 lb. lift capacity, providing compatibility with dozens of implements, including the Massey Ferguson FL Series loaders and BH and CB backhoes, depending on the model. Third-function loader control enables the use of a wide array of skid-steer attachments, such as root grapples and 4-in-1 buckets. A 540 rpm rear PTO is standard.
