John Deere was recently presented with eight 2022 AE50 Awards for outstanding innovations that improve production agriculture. Each year the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) recognizes the 50 most innovative product-engineering designs in the food and agriculture industry with AE50 Awards, as chosen by international engineering experts.

Winning products are recognized for their role in bringing advanced technology to the marketplace. These engineering developments help farmers, and food processors, increase efficiency, enhance quality, improve safety, and increase profitability. This year John Deere received the 2022 AE50 Awards for the following innovations:

See & Spray Select

MY22 9 Series Tractors

Integrated ExactRate Liquid Fertilizer System

1775NT Planter

Quick Change Blades for ProSeries Openers

HDF Hinged Frame Flexible Cutterbar Draper

C770 Cotton Harvesters

“AE50 Awards reaffirm the innovative spirit of John Deere employees around the world. Innovation is in our DNA and one of our most important core values. No other company in agriculture invests more time, money, and energy into research and development than John Deere. Our engineers take great pride in creating amazing new technology and products that benefit our customers and help them meet the world’s growing need for food, fuel, shelter, and infrastructure in the most productive and sustainable ways possible,”

said Joel Dawson, manager, production and precision ag for John Deere.

Last March, John Deere hosted one of its largest product launches. One of the award-winning innovations introduced was See & Spray Select, a factory-installed and machine-integrated solution that enables farmers to spot spray of weeds on fallow ground. See & Spray Select uses advanced camera and control technology to differentiate color on fallow ground, detects weeds, and spot sprays them.

“This targeted spray application has similar hit rates to broadcast spraying while applying 77% less herbicide on average, providing tremendous savings on inputs for farmers,”

Dawson said.

Also receiving a 2022 AE50 Award were MY22 John Deere 9 Series Tractors. The tractors help large-acre grain produces start earlier and run later to complete their spring seeding and planting work during tight, optimal seeding and planting windows. Powered by an all-new John Deere PowerTech 13.6L engine, 9 Series Tractors can pull wider implements faster and more precisely than ever before. When paired with integrated John Deere precision ag technology, farmers can drive important management changes to improve crop yields, lower input costs, and farm more acres in less time.

Last March, John Deere was the first agricultural company to bring to market a factory-installed, integrated liquid-fertilizer-delivery system on a tractor and planter together. The ExactRate liquid fertilizer system includes integrated ExactRate tanks on an 8RX four-track Tractor, integrated plumbing, and integrated factory-installed fluid tanks on the planter. When full, customers can use ExactRate to cover up to 80 acres per fill when applying at 20 gallons per acre. In addition, tracks on the tractor and planter reduce ground pressure and minimize soil compaction while seed and fertilizer are precisely placed.

John Deere also received an AE50 Award for its MY22 1775NT 24-Row Planter with features that increase onboard seed and fertilizer capacity and reduce soil compaction. New commodity tanks provide a 30-bushel increase in onboard seed capacity and a 150-gallon increase in liquid-fertilizer capacity compared to previous models, with a mainframe tracks option that reduces ground pressure under the center section by 70% compared to tires.

“The reduction in ground pressure helps increase crop yield by reducing soil compaction in rows under the center frame and increases the productivity of existing farmland. The additional onboard commodity capacity reduces the number of seed and fertilizer tender stops, saving customers time and fuel,”

Dawson said.

John Deere HDF Drapers were another AE50 award winner. These drapers provide the superior ground-following capability for on-and-off-ground harvesting, so customers can recover more crops while meeting the high-capacity needs of today’s combines. The HDF combines a flexible cutter bar with a hinged frame and hydraulic suspension and is the industry’s first combine header that merges a flexible cutter bar; hydraulic suspension between combine and head and between center frame and wings; a hinged frame with vertically articulating wings; and in-cab, on-the-fly float pressure and cut-height adjustment. This combination offers the best terrain-following performance in the industry.

Another AE50 award was presented to John Deere for its Quick Change Blades for its ProSeries Openers that help farmers save time and reduce labor costs required to change them on no-till air seeding tools. Using Quick Change Blades significantly reduces dealer maintenance costs and the time a customer may spend under the drill performing this routine maintenance.

John Deere W200 Series Self-Propelled Windrowers received an AE50 award and are available with optional new features that include TouchSet in-cab push-button controls operators can use to adjust swath flap and forming shields from the cab. This technology helps them maximize their windrowing efficiency with every pass through the field.

Last August, John Deere introduced the new CP770 Cotton Picker and new CS770 Cotton Striper. Each machine provides unmatched levels of productivity, technology, and efficiency for cotton growers. The CP770 Cotton Picker can harvest more than 10 acres per hour while reducing cotton losses. The CS770 Cotton Stripper can harvest up to an extra 100 acres per day in dryland cotton.

“Both machines feature a new cotton handling system that reduces wrap and hauling costs up to 8% on the picker and 12% on the stripper. Customers and the environment benefit through less wrap and fuel being used through the life of these harvesters,”

The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) has named New Holland Agriculture’s Horizon Ultra tractor cab a 2022 AE50 award winner. The AE50 awards program emphasizes the role of new products and systems in bringing advanced technology to the marketplace. These engineering developments help farmers increase efficiency, enhance quality, improve safety, and increase profits. Each year, 50 winners are selected by ASABE, and New Holland Agriculture is pleased to be among the 2022 recipients.

Carlo Lambro, Brand President New Holland Agriculture, stated:

“It is always an honor to be included in ASABE’s AE50 annual award winners. These awards are a testament to the strength of the New Holland teams around the world: from the engineers who design our latest innovations to our field teams who work in the field side by side with our farmers to identify our next opportunities, and every step of the journey in between.”

The New Holland Horizon Ultra Tractor Cab

From the earliest stages of design, protecting the operator and preserving comfort was the focus of our engineers’ attention. The Horizon Ultra cab is the quietest in the industry – registering no more than 66 decibels.

In addition to the noise reduction, the cab has been expanded overall by 8% compared to prior models. The enlarged frame creates a more comfortable and functional room for the operator and extra storage space.

The spacious cab provides a supremely comfortable work environment with clean, uncluttered surfaces and intuitive operation with ergonomically located controls on the new SideWinder Ultra armrest and user-friendly IntelliView 12-inch display. The controls can be configured to match the operator’s preferences, and customization is as simple and extensive as desired. The Centerview display placed in the center of the steering wheel – an industry-first – provides a clear line of sight.

The new class-leading automatic climate control system with zone selection, which has 35% more capacity than the previous model, easily maintains a comfortable temperature in all seasons.

The EIMA jury awarded the FPT Sustainable 2022 “Tractor of the Year” prize to the New Holland T6.180 Methane Power tractor, powered by the FPT Industrial N67 NG engine.

Launched in 1998 by the magazine ‘Trattori’, the prestigious annual TOTY awards recognize the latest innovations throughout the international tractor sector. This year, the jury comprised 26 journalists, representing the most influential agricultural magazines, websites, TV programs, and social networks across Europe.

The 2022 “Tractor of the Year” New Holland T6.180 Methane Power, powered by the FPT Industrial N67 NG engine, received the award because it represents a step forward towards
more sustainable farming.

Leveraging more than 20 years experience in Natural Gas engine development, proven by
over 60,000 units sold globally, FPT Industrial is now pioneering the introduction of Natural Gas technology in off-road applications, with customized engine solutions for installation on
agricultural equipment.

The N67 NG for the T6 Methane Power delivers the same performance as the Diesel version in terms of power, with up to 130 kW @ 1,800 rpm, 740 Nm torque @ 1,500 rpm, and the same durability and maintenance intervals, with an oil change interval of 600 hours, thus ensuring equivalent in-field performance and operation for end-users. Stage V compliance is attained through a simple maintenance-free 3-way catalyst, with no need for EGR, DPF, or SCR, maximizing reliability, machine uptime, and efficiency.

In real-world agricultural working conditions, CO2 emissions are reduced by a minimum of 10% when compared to a standard diesel tractor and are close to net-zero when running on biomethane. Moreover, polluting emissions are reduced by 80% on average when compared to a standard Diesel engine.

The competition “Best Agricultural Machine 2021” is held every two years by the Association of Agricultural Machinery Testers, also known as AIST. The most popular agricultural machines are determined via a survey of farming businesses.

Objectivity is ensured by the personal opinions of farmers, which are based on practical experience with the machines. Based on the responses, collected via the Internet and questionnaires, the experts at these test centres for agricultural machinery compile a “national rating” of agricultural machinery.

Hundreds of machines in a wide variety of categories regularly take part in the competition: from soil tillage and sowing to harvesting machinery. The most important criteria in evaluating the performance of agricultural machinery are the quality of the technology, reliability, availability of service and the cost of the machine or equipment.

The winners in all categories of the competition are awarded the “Farmers’ Sympathy Award”, which are then traditionally handed out to agricultural machinery manufacturers at the agricultural machinery exhibition, “Golden Autumn”.

This year, the Primera DMC 9000 large-area seed drill won the competition for “Best Agricultural Machine 2021” in the category “seed drills and planting machinery”.

The award is well-deserved – the Primera DMC can rightly be described as the AMAZONE flagship. It is the most popular and sought-after model among farmers for its versatility and high performance.

The multi-award-winning knotter technology for balers is recognized among the best Sustainable Farming Solutions delivering significant environmental benefits and cost savings to customers.

New Holland was honored with the Gold medal at the 2021 edition of the Edison Awards for the ground-breaking Loop-Master knotting technology featured on its BigBaler 1290 High Density and BigBaler PLUS range. The annual award competition recognizes excellence in new product and service development, marketing, human-centered design, and innovation. Winners are selected based on four criteria: Concept, Value, Delivery, and Impact.

Carlo Lambro, New Holland Brand President, stated:

“We are honored to receive this recognition for our patented Loop-Master technology, which brings significant cost and environmental benefits to our customers. By recognizing that bale quality is key to delivering maximum productivity and minimum waste, over the years our team has been focusing its resources on how to enhance these two aspects further while making baling even more sustainable.”

Felix Ramuenke, Global Product Manager for Large Square Balers, added:

“The Loop-Master technology takes the best from the two existing knotting technologies and combines them to provide a solution that is an industry first. This unique solution has attracted great interest from industry experts and farmers, and has been very well received by customers.”

The Loop-Master technology has received multiple industry awards in recognition of its unique solution. It combines the concepts of the two existing knotting technologies, the ‘loop’ knotter, and the double knotter. On the one hand, it eliminates the loose twine ends generated by double knot technology, which is left behind in the field, representing a cost for farmers, a hazard to livestock that consumes baled forage and contaminates the environment. On the other, the Loop-Master solution adopts the higher tensile strength of the ‘loop’ knotter, increasing it by 26%. This means that lower grade twine can be used and bales are more resistant to handling.

The advantages of the Loop-Master technology are clear: by eliminating offcuts, about 100 pounds or 3.5 miles of twine is saved over a 10,000-bale season, resulting in cost and environmental benefits. The higher tensile strength together with the high compression system of the new baler results in denser bales, optimizing truck transport with more tonnage per load. This means transporting fewer loads, further reducing the impact on the environment.

Advanced connectivity enables Deere to fully embrace the IoT and revolutionize productivity in factory settings

John Deere has obtained 5G licenses in five counties in Iowa and Illinois as part of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) auction for the Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) 3.5 GHz spectrum. This will enable John Deere to accelerate the availability of 5G in its largest manufacturing facilities in North America.

Rural counties are often left behind in the race to implement broadband – even though it is necessary to process large quantities of data and enable advances in smart manufacturing, Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and other breakthrough technologies in these areas. By obtaining these licenses, John Deere will boost its wireless networks by providing access to 5G in its manufacturing facilities.

“John Deere has always focused on how to empower customers to do more with less by using technology, and our focus on tech goes way beyond the fields. It impacts everything single aspect of our business, and we’re constantly looking at ways to improve our own efficiencies and outcomes with it. Implementing 5G in our manufacturing facilities allows John Deere to make significant progress in our Smart Industrial strategy by turning factories into smart and connected manufacturing facilities – a critical piece of the industrial IoT.”

said Jahmy Hindman, Chief Technology Officer.

John Deere’s manufacturing facilities are extraordinarily complex environments that rely on automation and connectivity. With miles of embedded Ethernet cables connecting Wi-Fi drop points currently in factory ceilings, the facilities are faced with limited flexibility for setting up and upgrades. 5G enables private LTE networks and will allow John Deere to design a more flexible, nimble, and connected facility, creating opportunities for further advancement and greater efficiency that will transform the manufacturing process.

Private 5G LTE also creates the opportunity to expand factory capabilities leveraging edge computing, analytics, and autonomous devices, and empowers a larger set of smart applications like real-time location systems, asset tracking, inventory management, wearables, building automation, and robotics for operational cost savings.

John Deere will implement 5G at its manufacturing facilities in the following counties: Rock Island, Illinois; Scott County, Iowa; Dubuque, Iowa; Polk County, Iowa; Black Hawk County, Iowa. The rollout is set to occur during the fiscal year 2022.
