Volvo CE Battery-Electric Compact Excavator and Compact Wheel Loader are Viable Alternatives to Diesel Equipment for Fleets to Reduce Carbon Footprints.

Volvo Construction Equipment announced today the results of a pilot project testing the ECR25 Electric compact excavator and L25 Electric compact wheel loader in North America. Remarks were provided at a press event in Los Angeles alongside officials from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD), and customers who tested the machines.

For nearly a year, Volvo CE has been testing its battery-powered ECR25 Electric compact excavator and L25 Electric compact wheel loader with multiple customers on job sites in Southern California with the goal of accelerating the deployment of zero-emission technologies for off-road vehicles. Both machines are zero-emission solutions that meet the high-performance standards of construction customers in a variety of applications, as proven through the recent testing scenarios. An Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant administered by the South Coast AQMD provided funding for the project.

The pilot results come on the cusp of the company’s full roll-out of electric machines in these sizes, with customer deliveries of the ECR25 Electric expected in January 2022 and both units available throughout North America early in 2022. The company is the first to commercialize dedicated electric machines at the larger end of the compact size range.

“Our customer’s response to these machines validates that there is not only a desire for these types of machines in North America but a pull in many markets. This just adds further momentum to the Volvo vision of offering machines that align with Science-Based Targets and our overall commitment to decarbonization,”

said Stephen Roy, President of Region North America, Volvo CE.

Key learnings from the pilot

The pilot project confirms Volvo electric construction equipment matches performance and has significant benefits when compared to diesel machines in the same class.

“The California pilot project supports what we’ve seen on job sites in Europe and elsewhere: our battery-electric compact excavator and compact wheel loader are viable alternatives to diesel equipment for construction fleets that want to reduce their carbon footprints. Climate change is the biggest challenge of our time, we all have an important role to act, and by working together and collaborating we can reduce the number of harmful emissions that are entering the atmosphere,”

said Melker Jernberg, President of Volvo CE.

Key findings:

Sustainability — Powered by lithium-ion batteries and producing zero emissions, the ECR25, and L25 compact electric machines proved themselves as environmentally sound options. They also allowed some of the customers to operate inside buildings and other structures where diesel exhaust is restricted.

Proof points: Based on the combined 400 operating hours of electric machine use during the year-long pilot, there was a reduction of 6 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions and an approximate savings of 560 gallons of fuel with an estimated cost of $2,400, when comparing diesel machine use at the same amount of hours.

Noise — There were significantly lower noise levels compared with diesel equipment, reducing noise pollution and improving job site communication and safety by making it easier for crew members to hear each other. The testers said the machines could allow them to work in sound-sensitive areas.

Proof points: Lowered exterior noise levels by 9 decibels (dBA) on the ECR25 Electric compact excavators compared to their diesel counterparts, which represents a 90% decrease in sound power. The L25 Electric compact wheel loader sees a similar reduction in sound power, which is a measurement of noise radiating from a source.

Performance — The Volvo electric machines have similar specifications to their diesel equivalents, and pilot project participants said that in practice the performance matched that of diesel machines. There also was positive feedback on the decreased maintenance needs of the electric machines, which don’t require maintenance items such as oil, oil filters, and diesel particulate filters. The need for a diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank is also eliminated.

Proof points: Matched performance in several key areas, including digging depth and breakout force on the excavator and tipping load and dump height on the wheel loader.

Charging — The project was an enabler for adaptations to the machines to make them compatible with the North American power grid. The higher current available on the U.S. power grid compared with Europe was found to be a benefit to charging. The Volvo CE pilot project confirmed the importance of having access to quality charging connections. However, traditional power sources aren’t always required. Baltic Sands, for example, installed a solar array for its work in the desert.

Proof points: Between the two machines, over 200 charge cycles were completed using 240-volt AC grid power, fast charging, mobile power sources, and solar power.

“This electric construction equipment produces no tailpipe emissions and protects the health of neighboring communities. In order to attain the national air quality standards and fight climate change, we need to aim for vehicles and equipment that produce near-zero emissions,”

said EPA Pacific Southwest Air and Radiation Division Director Elizabeth Adams.

Pilot project partners

The L25 Electric compact wheel loader and ECR25 Electric compact excavator were used by four organizations in a variety of applications:

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), for trenching, grading, and clearing of drainage areas.

Casper Company, which specializes in demolition, concrete cutting, and environmental services, for utility and demolition work, including inside buildings.

Baltic Sands Inc., which specializes in environmentally sensitive, off-grid property development, for excavation, grading, moving material, and numerous other tasks in housing construction.

Waste Management, a waste disposal and recycling company, for light waste handling.

“Over the three months we tested, these machines performed exceptionally — matching what we would expect from a diesel machine of equal size but with no emissions. We are excited to be one of the early adopters in applying electric equipment to our business and I have a sincere belief that this is the future,”

said Jacques Marais, Director, Baltics Sands.

Applying the learnings and Volvo CE future priorities

Volvo CE continues to compile data and will submit full reports on the project to the South Coast AQMD and EPA.

Volvo CE will apply the learnings to future research and development of battery-electric vehicles. Points of emphasis will be to continue to enhance the run times of machines, optimize the onboard charging systems and continue to explore alternative charging methods for job sites without readily available access to charging stations.

Prebooking of the ECR25 Electric compact excavator and L25 Electric compact wheel loader for North American customers is open now for those who want to be among the first to own the machines when delivery begins in early 2022.

Additionally, Volvo CE will continue to develop the electrification of other sizes and types of machines.

Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions in the power generation marketplace as to the impact and performance of Tier 4 Final compliant engines. To get the true story, we talked with Darren Tasker, Vice President, Industrial, for Volvo Penta of the Americas.

Q. How proven are Tier 4 Final engines in the field?

A. Our Tier 4 Final engine technology is field-proven. Our sister company, Volvo Trucks, pioneered the implementation of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) as a key part of the Tier 4 Final solution for over-the-road trucks in North America in 2010. As a result, we are able to leverage this proven technology that has been deployed in over 270,000 Trucks in the Americas.

Q: Are natural gas engines better than diesel?

A: Diesel fuel provides more efficiency and power by volume compared to natural gas. With the Volvo Penta Tier 4 Final application, the design has built-in efficiencies that meet stringent emission requirements reducing particulate matter and NOx levels. Natural gas engines emit carbon dioxide as a result of combustion. While natural gas is a cleaner-burning fuel and typically has lower operating costs than diesel, the initial cost of a natural gas system is higher than a Tier 4 Final system. Other considerations are:

diesel fuel is less flammable than natural gas;

natural gas lines may be disrupted, shutting down the Genset, while diesel fuel can be stored on the premises;

diesel engines require less maintenance than natural gas engines; and

while natural gas engines are often quieter than diesel, new mufflers and SCR catalyst significantly reduce the noise levels of a modern Tier 4 Final diesel.

Q. Do Tier 4 Final engines have similar levels of fuel-efficiency than earlier tier levels?

A. Actually, Volvo Penta’s Tier 4 Final engines are more fuel-efficient due to the precise control of the fuel-air mixture controlled by the Engine Control Module. By reducing the particulate matter and NOx in the engine with the SCR system, we have eliminated the need for additional Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR). The result is reduced fuel consumption and better reliability.

Q: Will the increased complexity of Tier 4 Final engine result in more maintenance costs?

A: The Volvo Penta Tier 4 Final engine requires the same amount of maintenance as previous iterations. We designed our SCR system to be simple and reliable. There are only two major components: SCR and non-cooled EGR. The benefits are obvious. Fewer parts mean a lower risk of failures or malfunction. Additionally, our SCR catalyst is maintenance-free.

Q. Is there a higher price tag for Tier 4 Final solutions?

A. It’s important to look at the total cost of ownership and benefits that can be achieved. The peak shaving, load management or other electric market benefits that can be received typically offset costs and contribute significantly to paying for the Tier 4 Final solution. It is our experience that a Tier 4 Final certified system is actually less costly in initial acquisition and total cost of ownership in comparison to a Tier 2 system with after-treatment. Our Tier 4 Final package promises better fuel efficiency, lower maintenance costs, and reduced downtime. Additionally, the SCR catalytic converter is designed to last the life of the engine.

Q. It is sometimes claimed that new engines with emission mitigation have shorter lifetimes than older engines. Is that true?

A. The combination of SCR, non-cooled EGR, and an air throttle system help to reduce the amount of NOx emitted by our engines. The air throttle controls the amount of air entering the engine, which in turn affects the exhaust temperature that determines how much particulate matter is burned off by SCR. The throttle closes partially during light loading to maintain the necessary engine temperature for meeting those requirements. Together, these elements provide a simple solution for Tier 4 final while reducing wear in the engine over time and improving reliability.

Q: How about performance in cold weather climates?

A: The Volvo Penta Tier 4 Final engines perform exactly the same in cold temperatures as previous emission-step engines.

Q. Do the Tier 4 Final pollution controls hamper the reliability of the engines for data center applications?

A. Data centers have traditionally employed pollution avoidance measures like increased stack height, which is very costly or limited operating hours. A Tier 4 Final engine reduces installation costs and allows unlimited operation. In reality, the flexibility to test and run engines more often during system checks and maintenance actually increase system reliability. The latitude to run an emergency backup system without restriction also leads to increased facility uptime.

Q. What about shutdowns when the SCR system is not functioning properly, for instance, if Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) runs out?

A. There is a concern that the engine will automatically shut down if the SCR system is not working properly to reduce emissions. We have worked with our power generation partners to design a system that mitigates inducement. This is done predominately through sizing of the DEF tank to match the fuel tank on site. This is because diesel fuel and DEF are typically delivered from the same provider. In addition, there is an emergency inducement override in compliance with Federal regulations, which allow the Tier 4 Final system to continue operating during an emergency event even if the SCR is not functioning properly.

Q. Is it true that all Tier 4 Final solutions require diesel particulate filters (DPFs)?

A. Some Tier 4 Final engines from other manufacturers use a DPF to meet the requirement for particulate matter reduction. A downside for DPFs is their need for intermittent downtime for regeneration. In addition, DPFs have higher maintenance costs and require frequent replacement. Volvo Penta’s Tier 4 Final uses a more efficient and improved SCR solution that reduces particulate matter emissions without a DPF.

Volvo Construction Equipment is shining a light on its community-focused efforts with The Building Tomorrow Project – an initiative that encourages involvement and action to create a more sustainable world in which all have access to clean water, housing, proper nutrition, and education.

Volvo Construction Equipment has a long history of supporting community projects that spread social good. Now, in what has been a challenging year for people worldwide, the company is putting a renewed focus on this work with The Building Tomorrow Project.

From building schools for children in Beijing to building homes in hurricane-devastated Panama City, Florida — The Building Tomorrow Project seeks to create real change throughout the globe.

Putting real action behind the project’s purpose, one such example is the company’s commitment to tackle a key issue in the United States: disaster relief efforts.

In February, Volvo CE turned its attention to hurricane-affected Panama City, Florida, where some families have been displaced for nearly two years since Hurricane Michael destroyed 10,000 homes in the county in October 2018. Twenty volunteers from Volvo CE and local dealer Cowin Equipment assisted in Habitat for Humanity rebuilding efforts there before the nonprofit organization’s planned builds were temporarily put on pause due to COVID-19 concerns.

Throughout 2020 and 2021, Volvo CE has committed to supporting Habitat for Humanity in North America: including in disaster relief areas such as Panama City and in communities served by local Volvo CE dealers.

While building efforts were temporarily paused during the health crisis, the building is beginning to resume across the United States. While those efforts ramp up, the organization is encouraging virtual volunteerism to help raise funds in support of future build sites. In addition to the company’s commitment to supporting home builds as projects resume, Volvo CE North America recently donated $116,000 to Habitat for Humanity — a result of the company’s partnership with Discovery’s Gold Rush TV show and the sales proceeds of a custom Gold Rush excavator announced earlier this spring. The same sale also resulted in a $174,000 donation to Building Homes for Heroes — an organization that builds custom homes for U.S. veterans in need.

“Through our partnership with Volvo CE, Habitat is better poised to address the recovery work in areas affected by natural disasters and the affordable housing crisis that exists in communities around the world,”

says Colleen Finn Ridenhour, Chief Development Officer for Habitat for Humanity International.

The work in Panama City is just one of many projects to be highlighted as part of The Building Tomorrow Project. In addition to helping families build adequate housing in North America, Volvo and its employees are helping to empower underprivileged youth in India by providing them with machine operating skills and contributing to the construction of hospitals and schools in Zambia, China, and Latin America. While these are just a few examples, similar community projects are happening all over the world.

But none of this is new. Volvo CE has always been driven by the idea that through the passion, hard work, and collaboration of its people, it can make a meaningful contribution to thriving and sustainable societies.

Bill Law, Volvo CE Head of Brand, Marketing and Communication, says:

“The Building Tomorrow Project is not a campaign. It’s a commitment that we have lived and breathed from the very start of our business. It is an ongoing pledge from our Volvo CE family to millions around the world that we’re working to change lives for the better and provide communities with what they need to rise above societal challenges.”

Volvo Construction Equipment has named Tyler Equipment its 2019 Dealer of the Year in North America. The company also awarded Housby Heavy Equipment the title of 2019 Uptime Dealer of the Year.

The Dealer of the Year award recognizes the dealership in North America that best promotes the Volvo brand and the company’s core strategies: to provide the highest uptime in the industry, offer unique customer solutions and ensure the best value at any stage in a machine’s lifecycle.

Massachusetts-based Tyler Equipment‘s commitment to those areas contributed to its outstanding performance last year by growing general purpose equipment retail market share by 37% and road machinery equipment market share by 25% for the products they serve in their territory.

Stephen Roy, Senior Vice President Region North America, said:

“Being in business for 98 years speaks for itself. The team at Tyler focuses on the customer first, and that’s exactly as it should be. They understand what it means to be a unique solutions provider and focus on customer uptime.”

Tyler Equipment was founded in 1922 and still has third- and fourth- generation family members at work. With more than 50 employees, the company provides sales, service, parts, and rentals across southern New England. Their strong family culture, dedication to building and fostering long-term customer relationships, and promoting the Volvo brand have resulted in tremendous gains.

“It’s an honor to be the Volvo Dealer of the Year. We’re dedicated to serving our customers with a personal touch, and we value the relationships we’ve built. For Volvo to recognize that just confirms it’s the right way to do business.”

said M. Brooke Tyler III, president.

Spotlight on uptime

The Uptime Dealer of the Year award recognizes the North American dealership that demonstrates Volvo’s commitment to being the No. 1 uptime provider in the construction industry, including with its new Service Commitment piedge to provide customers unrivaled service and support.

With Des Moines, Iowa-based Housby Heavy Equipment, these are not just words. Their actions prove their dedication to keeping their customers up and running. One example is keeping a fully stocked parts department, which allowed them to achieve 98% parts availability in 2019. Another is the outfitting of nine Mack trucks to use as service trucks to help improve customer uptime.

“From our expertly trained service staff to our dedicated customer service representatives, from our large parts inventory to our mobile lube truck, we are set up to help keep our customers on the job and productive,” said Kelly Housby, President of Housby Heavy Equipment. “Uptime is a priority for our customers, and it’s our priority, too. When we took over the Volvo CE distributorship, our focus was to hire the best parts and service team, followed by a great sales team, and build a culture that totally supports uptime with the integrity and care of the entire organization.”

Housby joined the Volvo CE dealer network in 2017 and has represented Mack Trucks since 1969. The solid reputation for service that they’ve earned as a Mack dealer is replicating across its growing construction customer base.

Said Roy:

“Housby’s dedication to continually improving customer service and uptime are increasingly setting them apart from their competition. They are truly partners in making sure machines are working when they need to be.”

The construction of the C-43 water reservoir is part of the giant hydrological restoration project taking place in the Everglades. Dozens of Volvo CE machines are on site building the reservoir, set to be ready in 2023.

Since 1882, the Everglades have been drained for farming and it is now half the size it was a century ago. But that’s changing. One of largest ecosystem restoration projects in the U.S. in currently underway. The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan began 20 years ago and is a giant hydrological restoration project consisting of, among other things, the build of a new basin storage reservoir in the Caloosahatchee estuary, called the C-43 water reservoir project. When complete the reservoir, which is spread over 40km2, will hold excess water from a nearby lake, where it will be treated and then released during the dry season. In total the dam will be able to hold 200 billion liters of water.

Up to the challenge

Working on a construction project virtually the size of Manhattan comes with its share of dilemmas. And the hundreds of canals that have to be navigated during both rainy and dry seasons, pose even more challenges. Massimo Bugliosi, Project Director with Lane Construction-Salini Impregilo, is the one in charge of solving these issues. He says preparation is essential and relies on the dependable performance of Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) machines.

Volvo CE machines are versatile and up to the toughest of challenges.

Currently, there are 42 machines from Volvo CE working on the C-43 water reservoir project. This includes a mix of A45 articulated haulers, and EC750E 75-ton excavators– with more on the way.

“We chose to use Volvo equipment, because it is versatile and can handle the mixes of different kinds of soil,” explains Massimo Bugliosi.

Another challenge is something that no-one can rule over. The weather in South Florida can be rough and unpredictable – not to mention hurricanes coming to visit annually. But this is no surprise to the guys at Lane Construction-Salini Impregilo, who are well aware of the necessary precautions.

A tangible difference

The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan will boost the quality of life for humans and wildlife alike. The Everglades is home to more that 350 species of birds, 50 unique reptiles – and that’s not all. Every year more than one million visitors, from around the world, flock to the Everglades, helping to drive a rich economy in tourism and recreation. This natural reservoir also provides drinking water for southern Florida’s local population – of 8 million. This ecosystem restoration venture is a huge step towards creating a sustainable future where human expansion no longer poses a threat.

“To have the opportunity to serve as an essential supplier on a project of substantial environmental impact; is something we all strive for. Knowing that Volvo CE and our local dealer Alta Equipment is working to preserve the Everglades water estuaries and wildlife ecosystems for generations to come is by far the most rewarding work we could be a part of. ”

says Stephanie McCall, Vice President Key Accounts, Region North America.

At two of its North American facilities, the company is producing and distributing this vital protective gear to healthcare workers in the local communities and beyond. The efforts are part of an ongoing initiative from Volvo Group North America which plans to supply thousands of PPE units to healthcare operations across the country.

The Volvo Penta engineering team at the company’s the U.S. headquarter office in Chesapeake, VA has led the development of medical face shields. Utilizing a Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) 3D printing system and leveraging mask components manufactured by other Volvo Group business areas, the company delivered face shields to Chesapeake Regional Healthcare and has plans to continue production for further distribution.

At Volvo Penta’s engineering office in Germantown, WI, the staff has focused on the development of ear guards which help to alleviate pain often experienced by healthcare workers wearing face masks. To date, more than 1000 units of this protective equipment have been shipped to hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, and pharmacies in seven states including Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Florida, Michigan, Nevada, and Wisconsin.

“Together with our colleagues from Volvo Group North America, we are honored to support relief efforts and help protect those serving on the front lines of this pandemic,”

said Martin Bjuve, president of Volvo Penta of the Americas.

In addition to the PPE production efforts, Volvo Penta also made a charitable donation to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and Eastern Shore to support those in the Hampton Roads community where the organization is based. Across Volvo Group North America, financial aid, medical supplies, purchasing expertise and other in-kind donations to nonprofits have been provided in multiple locations.

Putting speed to need, in less than one month a cross-functional task force, led by colleagues in the Technology team, prototyped and have delivered more than 1600 face shields and ear guards for local healthcare providers and first responders in Shippensburg, Chambersburg, Carlisle and the surrounding region, with plans to double that amount in the coming weeks.

The Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, campus efforts feed into the broader Volvo Group North America pandemic outreach. The Group is providing financial aid, medical supplies, purchasing expertise and other in-kind donations to nonprofits in multiple locations across the U.S. and Canada.

“At Volvo CE, we have a ton of talent, resources and capability that we can deploy to help in the fight against the virus. It is who we are; our people care for the community, they are problem solvers, they are talented, engaged and determined to make a difference,”

says Brian Rudge, scrum leader and chief project manager for large soil compaction.

The face shield is now one of the most in-demand pieces of equipment. It is used as a second barrier to cover and protect the N95 respirator mask and extend the mask’s life.

The shield lenses are sourced from an internal supply of replacement lenses that are normally stocked for fabrication grinding, and attached to 3D-printed visor brackets to make a functional equivalent to the medical-grade face shields used in hospitals.

Foam rolls, sourced from the cab assembly line, are cut and used to pad the shield visors, as well as shipped to fellow Volvo Group sites to support their face shield production activities.

The ear guards help alleviate the discomfort of wearing N95 masks for long shifts. The 3D-printed expandable attachments hold the elastic straps of the masks around the head instead of looping over the ears and causing irritation.

Both the visors and ear guards are produced on fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3-D printers owned by the Technology department or employees, and produce materials at a rate of about 40 per day. Several employees are also using a thermoforming process to heat strips of plastic and form into the visor design.

Employees use social distancing and proper sanitizing measures to assemble the devices from home. Items are collected once a week for deliveries.

Additional Volvo CE employees are getting involved by writing personal notes of encouragement that are added to the delivery boxes. The site is also collecting bleach and disinfectants for local EMS departments, who are consuming supplies at a rapid rate, due to rigorous cleaning requirements.

says Tony Zambito, Road Director.
