Kubota Tractor Corporation today announced it has closed escrow and acquired nearly 44 acres of land in Elk Grove, California, in Sacramento County off Highway 99, roughly 20 miles north of its current facility in Lodi, California. The property will allow the company to expand its network in the U.S. and western states with the development of a new Kubota Western Division Office and larger equipment distribution hub. This effort reinforces the company’s commitment to providing localized support to its dealers and customers.

Gains in larger and four-wheel-drive tractors offset smaller declines in the sub-40hp range in the U.S. while Canadian farm tractor unit sales were positive across the board in July according to the latest data from the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM).

U.S. total farm tractor sales fell 0.8% in July compared to 2020, while U.S. self-propelled combine sales jumped 19.2% to 657 units sold. The sub-40hp reduced its decline, down only 4.4%, while the mid-size 41-100 hp segment was nearly flat, down 0.4% or only 26 units.

All other segments were positive, with the articulated 4WD segment leading the way for the third straight month by climbing a healthy 79.4% to 287 units sold. The 100+hp 2WD segment also grew 37.8%. Year-to-date farm tractor sales remain up 13.7% and combine up 12.6%.

For Canada, July monthly tractor and combine sales were positive across all segments, including in the sub-40hp segment up 0.2% or 3 units, with the biggest growth in four-wheel-drive units nearly doubling, up 93.8% to 62 units sold, while total farm tractor sales were up 14.8% and self-propelled combines up 59.8%.

“The story of these row-crop and articulated four-wheel-drive sales is a reflection of farmer optimism throughout North America. We’re glad to see the smaller units start to return to pace, but these big units selling are often six-figure investments for farmers, and farmers don’t make these sorts of investments without serious consideration of future market conditions,”

said Curt Blades, Senior Vice President of Ag Services at the Association of Equipment Manufacturers.

“Electric Island” planned to feature charging for commercial electric vehicles up to four times the speed of today’s chargers, energy storage, and generation and technology showcase

Portland General Electric and Daimler Trucks North America announced the co-development of “Electric Island,” a large public charging site for medium- and heavy-duty electric commercial vehicles expected to be the first of its kind in the United States. Electric Island will help accelerate the development, testing, and deployment of zero-emissions (tank-to-wheel) commercial vehicles.

The site is under construction now near DTNA headquarters in Portland and is designed to support up to nine vehicle charging stations with charging levels of up to greater than one megawatt by the spring of 2021. Electric Island will provide DTNA, PGE, and the public the opportunity to charge light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicles. Plans for more chargers, on-site energy storage, solar power generation, and a product and technology showcase building are currently being finalized.

Electric Island aims to address the intersection of vehicles and the grid, creating new opportunities for future EV drivers and utility customers. Powered by DTNA’s enrollment in PGE’s Green Future Impact renewable energy program, the site will be greenhouse gas emissions-free, including all vehicle charging.

Roger Nielsen, president, and CEO of DTNA said,

“In cooperation with PGE, and with the plan to expand electric vehicle charging right here in Portland to support not only our EV charging needs but those of other drivers in the area, we are paving the way to a brighter, cleaner CO₂-neutral future. As the largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles, we can accelerate this shift and are excited to address, holistically, the complete EV ecosystem. Daimler Trucks has made Portland our home for the past 73 years and having been born and raised in Oregon, I am incredibly proud to help make Swan Island an Electric Island.”

Maria Pope, president, and CEO of PGE said,

“Oregon’s transportation future is electric, and with global leaders like Daimler Trucks North America right here in Portland, we have the opportunity to accelerate a clean energy transition. We are excited to launch this cutting-edge partnership with DTNA, demonstrating what is possible when utilities and the automotive industry collaborate and innovate.”

Rendering of the Electric Island project located near DTNA headquarters on Swan Island in Portland.

Electric Island is designed to inform both DTNA’s work in commercial electric vehicle development and PGE’s work in meeting customer charging needs. The project will inform each company’s efforts by studying the future of heavy-duty charging, including:

• Use of vehicle chargers featuring power delivery of up to over one megawatt (over 4 times faster than today’s fastest light-duty vehicle chargers), enabling PGE and DTNA to develop best practices for cost-effective future deployments;

• Integration of heavy-duty charging technology into PGE’s Smart Grid, such as vehicle-to-grid technologies, second-life use of Daimler’s battery packs, and onsite energy generation; and

• Testing information technology opportunities like fleet and energy management by captive solutions and services.

As part of its pursuit to find new ways to bring value to the shortline industry, the Association has hired Matt Rice to lead its membership operation. He begins Aug. 3.

Rice has been director of projects and grants for Congressman John Shimkus (R-Ill.), who is not seeking re-election. This recent role is part of an extensive career in politics that gave Rice opportunities to get to know people and issues in manufacturing, agriculture, and the rural Midwest.

Executive Vice President Vernon Schmidt said:

“He brings a unique understanding of the industry and a deep appreciation for the companies this Association represents. He is a relationship builder with ideas on how to make our Association more indispensable to members.”
