“We’re excited to welcome T.J. Reed back to the Daimler Trucks North America team where his industry knowledge, incredible leadership skills, and previous DTNA experience are a perfect complement to the high-performing team in place at Daimler Trucks Remarketing. T.J. is uniquely suited to continue to grow and develop both the Daimler Trucks Remarketing organization and the SelecTrucks brand in the coming years,”

said David Carson, senior vice president, sales and marketing at DTNA.

During his previous tenure at DTNA, Reed oversaw both product marketing and product strategy for Freightliner and Detroit as director of product strategy and, earlier, as director of product marketing. Reed also previously held roles in strategic pricing and sales. He originally joined Daimler in 1998 as a custom application engineer for the company’s line of vocational trucks.

Beyond his professional contributions to the commercial vehicle manufacturing industry, Reed has routinely mentored and coached young professionals in the industry. Additionally, both Reed and his wife actively support the Rare Kidney Foundation, which focuses on raising awareness, building community, and advocating for patients with rare genetic kidney diseases.

Reed holds an MBA from Michigan State University and earned a bachelor’s degree in business and history from Muskingum University.

Establishes Western Star X-Series to expand DTNA’s vocational footprint

Western Star introduced the newest addition to its purpose-built vocational line-up, the all-new Western Star 47X. The truck complements the Western Star 49X to establish the Western Star X-Series and extend the platform’s reach into entirely new vocational applications.

With a standard 111.6″ BBC, the 47X is well suited to regions or applications that require a shorter overall vehicle length, such as drywall trucks, and for those that need to meet federal or local bridge law requirements, such as mixers or super dumps, an optional 110.8″ BBC. With the shorter hood and a wheel cut up to 50 degrees, the 47X further optimizes maneuverability for work on construction sites or operations in congested urban environments.

“With the 47X and the 49X, we can offer our vocational customers different options that will give them the right tool for their specific job needs. The vocational segment is a broad segment, covering many different applications, and our Western Star X-Series reflects that reality. Whether their work is heavy-haul, logging and timber operations, or construction, we have the right Star for our customers,”

said David Carson, senior vice president, sales and marketing, Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA).

A lighter heavyweight

Western Star has a long legacy of manufacturing durable, hard-working trucks. With the X-Series, DTNA engineers have evolved that legacy to consider the needs of today’s customers and have completely reimagined the modern vocational truck.

“A key priority was to consider how to reduce mass without compromising strength. From the cab to the frame rails, to powertrain and battery configurations, we examined all features to deliver weight savings to our customers for greater productivity and profitability,”

said Tracy Mack-Askew, chief engineer of chassis, propulsion, and vocational engineering, DTNA.

The 47X is approximately 200 lbs. lighter than the 49X in like-for-like spec and is best for weight-sensitive applications like mixers and bulk haul. All X-Series trucks have tougher, yet lighter, single-channel frame rail options versus legacy products. The platform offers frame rails with best-in-class RBM (resisting bending moment) of up to 3.8 million inch-lbs. to last longer and return a greater payload. A new 9.5-millimeter single-channel rail option is available and features comparable strength as today’s 11-millimeter rail. Standard high-strength aluminum forward, rear, and end-of-frame cross members further reduce mass, as does a new two-battery option.

A cab fit for a king

The X-Series steel-reinforced aluminum cab further reduces mass by up to 8 percent while offering greater driver comfort with 13 percent more space than competitors. An optional two-person bench seat is available for applications demanding a large on-site crew, and a new space-optimized, in-cab battery box affords additional legroom to the operator. An optional roof-mounted condenser offers maximum airflow through the radiator for stationary applications like construction and mining while keeping operators comfortable.

All X-Series models come standard with operator-centric features such as a wrap-around dash that provides easy access to the driver command center and B-panel. On the B-panel, a flex panel can be prepped for a tablet or configured for an additional 12 switches or 10 gauges. The truck’s interior also includes upscale appointments such as metal accents, while all-metal exterior brightwork is distinctive as well as durable.

The 47X’s unique hood offers industry-leading forward visibility of 24.8 feet – an 11-inch improvement over the 49X – while its composite construction and ISO Tech suspension system resist bending and cracking by absorbing and dissipating vibrations from road inputs.

A real power play

The 47X comes standard with the Detroit DD13 Gen 5 engine, which features higher compression ratios and a new swirl piston design to further improve combustion and efficiency. ThermoCoasting in the DD13 Gen 5 prevents after-treatment cool-down during a driving regen to keep the system at its optimum temperature and significantly reduce the need for parked regens.

For weight-sensitive applications, the Cummins L9 and X12 engines are available for the 47X. Optional front-engine power take-off (FEPTO) is offered on both Cummins engine offerings and the Detroit DD13 for applications like snowplows. Similarly, rectangular fuel tanks and a raised after-treatment system mounting are offered with Cummins engines for better clearance for belly plows, making them a clear choice for municipalities and customers maintaining critical roadways in the winter months.

The 47X is also offered with the all-new DT12-V transmission, which is built on the proven DT12 and has more than 35 million miles of vocational-specific testing. The DT12 includes three work-ready mode applications: Rock-free mode, Off-road mode, and Paver mode for the challenges of specific vocational applications.

The standard for any 47X equipped with the DD13 Gen 5, the Detroit Assurance suite of active safety systems brings industry-leading active safety solutions to the vocational segment, including active brake assist, side guard assist, adaptive cruise control, and more to keep operators, workers at the job site, pedestrians, and other motorists safe.

Ready to get on the job faster

Western Star partnered with leading truck equipment manufacturers (TEMs) to ensure the X-Series supports fast and efficient upfits. The 47X’s mid-chassis packaging has a number of clear back-of-cab configurations while unobstructed frame rails provide more efficient body integration. The QuickFit Interface System offers ready access to electrical architecture and was designed for easy TEM interface, programming, and access to power. The CHEC Tool from DTNA enables TEMs and dealers to view and modify electrical configurations, giving them the power to customize inputs and outputs and change parameters within minutes.

“With the power of QuickFit and CHEC, you can take things that were once considered to be complex, expensive, or impossible to do and accomplish them more easily and efficiently,”

said Carson.

A Flex Panel located in the dash B-panel of the truck gives TEMs the ability to mount body controllers, making Western Star the only OEM that doesn’t require compromising space between the seats to do so. The Flex Panel can also accommodate additional gauges, switches, or a RAM Mount prep, depending on customer needs.

The 49X remains an unmatched workhorse ideally suited to heavy haul and logging operations. Both models – depending on spec – are also ready to tackle oil fields, towing & recovery, bulk haul, crane, and dump applications.

Noted Carson:

“With the addition of the 47X to the X-Series line-up, Western Star is offering fresh, modern trucks with purposeful technologies to enable all vocational customer’s success. The wide breadth of segment coverage means that there’s a Star for every need.”

The all-new 47X is available for order now and delivery to customers begins in early 2022.

Daimler Trucks North America announced that its Portland truck manufacturing plant is setting the course for the company’s “green” production in the U.S. by achieving carbon-neutral production in 2020 with reduced energy consumption and the offset of on-site emissions. DTNA further plans to incorporate CO₂-neutral production at all of its remaining truck manufacturing plants by 2025.

The Portland plant will be the first vehicle manufacturing plant to achieve CO₂-neutral production in the global Daimler Trucks network. DTNA is making a significant investment in the facility as it prepares for production of the Freightliner eCascadia and Freightliner eM2, the company’s first battery-electric medium- and heavy-duty trucks planned for the start of series production in 2022.

“The commitment we have to CO₂-neutral vehicles starts with how they are produced, and we are on the path to achieving carbon-neutral production, beginning with our Portland truck plant in 2020. With our quickly growing portfolio of battery-electric vehicles and our transformative work in hydrogen fuel cell commercial vehicles that will be on the road within the decade, our future and our industry’s future is electric.”

said Roger Nielsen, president, and CEO, DTNA.

Partnerships to Achieve Carbon Neutrality

The Portland plant developed a strategy with local partners that will have a powerful impact. Through a partnership with Energy Trust of Oregon, the plant has reduced its energy consumption from vehicle manufacturing with equipment replacement and facility upgrades. The upcoming implementation of ISO 50001 will ensure further improvement in energy efficiency for the Portland plant.

As a signing member of Portland General Electric’s Green Future Impact program, DTNA has also committed to the purchase of “green” energy from wind and solar power generation, including from the recently announced Pachwáywit fields, slated to be Oregon’s largest solar facility, located in Gilliam County, about 150 miles east of Portland.

Geoffrey Jansen, plant manager, Portland truck manufacturing plant, DTNA, said:

“Sustainability is not a new topic for Daimler Trucks North America or for those of us here in Oregon, and we are excited to support our global commitments by getting a head start in our own home town. This announcement is even more meaningful since we will begin building the all-new electric Freightliner eCascadia and Freightliner eM2 here within the next couple of years.”

Environmental Leadership

DTNA is committed to ambitious goals to reduce emissions of CO₂ and volatile organic compounds, energy consumption, waste generation, and water consumption in an effort to make a powerful positive environmental impact for the communities in which it does business and on the world as a whole. For Daimler Truck & Buses, sustainability means permanently creating value for all stakeholder groups: for customers, employees, and investors as well as for business partners and society as a whole.

After years of research and hours of technical analysis, Magna Tyres managed to launch its first-ever “3-star” rigid dump truck tire.

The 24.00R35 has been added to the Magna MA04+ line-up and will be available in the 3*** versions in addition to the already existing ** version. The potential of this latest acquisition is tremendous and will be the first step in the upgraded generation Magna RDT tires.

Since its introduction, the Magna MA04+ has provided many dump trucks worldwide with top-class performances and moved countless loads of raw materials. The proven tread pattern turned out to be a great basis for the further development of the upgraded MA04+ range.

Cargo transportation is a matter of cost per mile. The lower it is, the better the trucking solution.

This is the idea that goes through the entire text Trevor Milton wrote on LinkedIn to explain why he thinks Nikola will offer a better solution than the Tesla Semi. For companies that deal with cargo transportation, his points will make a lot of sense.

Although it may seem that the text is a confrontation, the Nikola CEO reinforces many times that BEVs and FCEVs do not have to compete. Milton thinks they are complementary. It is just a matter of applying each of them to the application in which they can present more advantages.

With that in mind, he admits BEVs are more efficient but more suitable for transportation distances up to 300 miles. FCEVs are better for long hauls, at least with the current technology available for batteries. And that advantage comes in two aspects.

The first one is that fuel cell trucks are naturally lighter. That allows them to carry more cargo than an equivalent battery truck. If they can transport more stuff, their cost per mile already has a headstart.

The second is that the hydrogen stations on highways can have a lower energy cost than the charging stations in cities. We have already mentioned that the price of supercharging makes it dangerously close to that of filling up a gas tank. According to Milton, that happens because Tesla is not able to charge less due to the contracts it has with utilities. Would that be one of the reasons for Tesla to become a utility in the UK?

Nikola can avoid that with “PPA (Power Purchase Agreements) on main federal transmission lines.” The company has established these agreements for 20 years, making the price for hydrogen production fixed.

Milton says the current cost for 500 miles of range is $250 with green production of hydrogen. The Tesla Semi, with its 1.1 MWh battery pack, would require $297 to get a full charge at California prices. If these numbers are correct, the weight headstart that fuel cell trucks have becomes a huge advantage compared to a vehicle with a massive battery pack. But there’s more to this equation.

As Milton points out, current Tesla battery packs have to be replaced after about 500,000 miles. The one-million km Tesla Model S already had three battery packs. With such a lifespan for these components, a truck being fast charged twice a day would last only three years. That is likely why Tesla needed a one-million-mile battery: not for its cars, but rather for its truck.

Supposing the Semi already presents them, it will still have a limited lifespan and a high cost. Milton estimates the price of the 1.1 MWh battery pack in $122,000. To have lower energy prices, Nikola’s CEO says the chargers could buffer the grid with a similar battery pack, adding more $122,000 to the cost of the truck. Imagine replacing these battery packs every three years or, in case of the million-mile battery, every six years.

Fuel cells use hydrogen tanks that last 20 years, according to Milton. They would just demand “minimal rebuild costs after 20,000 hours” of about $5,000 to $10,000. That is equivalent to 2.3 years of continuous work.

These repairs are downtime for the trucks, but so is charging, even if it is possible to get to 80 percent of charge in one hour, for example. Considering these truck batteries are 11 times the biggest ones currently in electric cars, we would estimate more charging time than that. And time is money, especially with cargo transportation.

Battery packs would probably have longer lifespans if they could be charged slowly, as most Tesla owners know. So much so that many recommend only using the supercharging network for trips, never on a daily basis.

With that in mind, one could wonder if the Semi wouldn’t benefit from swappable batteries. If there is any swapping machine able to cope with 6 tons of the components the Semi will carry, that could make sense, but would also add cost to the operation.

Milton adds a final concern to this list: having a grid able to cope with a fleet of battery trucks. If each of these vehicles demands 1.1 MWh, a company with 100 trucks would need at least 110 MW each time all of them required a charge. If you add a Megapack to the buffer grid – as Nikola’s CEO suggested to lower energy costs – the energy demand may be even higher. Not precisely twice as much, as he suggested, but certainly more than that required solely for the trucks. In 2017, San Francisco had a 261 kWh usage, according to Statista.

As usual, Milton received a bunch of tweets from Tesla apologists who used passenger car information to try to confront his assessment. Instead of embarrassing themselves, they could have asked Tesla for more details on the Semi to refute Nikola’s CEO arguments properly. They could also have considered that diesel is the one to beat in the quest for cleaner transportation, not a company that proposes hydrogen as an alternative to plugs.
