Ultimately, our goal is to create products that help farmers feed and fuel the world, and this additional space and personnel are necessary to meet demand.

Sukup Manufacturing is offering grain bin doors with enhanced safety features. The doors have new hardware that ensures inner panels are closed before the outer door will close correctly with both latches engaged. The new hardware can be mounted on either side of the door, providing enhanced safety whether the door is installed to open left to right or right to left. The design is currently patent pending.

“Inadvertent grain spillage from your bin door can potentially cause death or injury. Here at Sukup, we are continuously working to improve the design of our products to make them as safe and productive as possible. This new door design especially enhances safety by making sure the inner door panels are always closed when the outside door is closed,”

said Sukup bin sales director John Hanig.

Inner panels of Sukup’s 44” and 66” tall doors, both of which use the new safety hardware, provide structural support to grain bins.

“Grain Bin Safety Week is the right time to share this new door design as a way to underline Sukup’s commitment to farm safety. Our goal is to manufacture the highest quality equipment that helps farmers be efficient and profitable, but also maintain safety as a top priority,”

said Steve Sukup, President, and CEO of Sukup Manufacturing Co.

Sukup Manufacturing Co. has designed and manufactured the world’s largest free-span grain bin, with a diameter of 165 feet. The previous record-holding bin has a diameter of 156 feet, which Sukup also manufactured and designed.

The ground was broken for the new bin on September 14, 2020, at Golden Grain Energy, an ethanol production plant in Mason City, Iowa. Representatives from Sukup Manufacturing attended, as well as representatives from partner organizations Buresh Building Systems Inc., a Sukup dealer located in Hampton, Iowa, and construction partner McGough Construction out of St. Paul, Minnesota.

The bin will hold 2.2 million bushels and will include 30 rings with a peak height of 155 feet and 7 inches. Construction is expected to be complete in May or June of 2021.

Chad Kuhlers, Golden Grain CEO, said,

“This system will increase GGE’s grain storage from approximately 1.275 million bushels to almost 3.5 million bushels. We currently have about 10 days of storage, and the addition of this bin will increase our storage capacity to approximately 30 days of storage. In addition, GGE will increase its receiving capacity from 40,000 bushels per hour to 65,000 bushels per hour.”

Brent Hansen, who manages commercial accounts for Sukup, said:

“Our customers often tell us that adding storage gives them one of the quickest returns on an investment in their facilities. Storing grain in Sukup bins keeps it in better condition versus a temporary pile, and it’s safer, easier, and cost-effective to reclaim the grain back into their processing facility. We always try to listen to our customers’ needs, which includes watching the bottom line!”

Steve Sukup, President, and CEO of Sukup Manufacturing, said:

“Sukup constantly strives to push the boundaries of innovation, while maintaining the excellent customer service and high quality that the agriculture industry has come to expect of us as a family-owned company. We are thrilled to again have achieved the milestone of designing and manufacturing the largest freestanding grain bin in the world.”

Charles E. Sukup, President of Sukup Manufacturing Co., announces that on February 1, 2020 he will retire from Chair, President and CEO to Chairman of the Board. His brother, Steve Sukup, former CFO and Vice President, will become the new President and CEO. Although Charles, will no longer be involved in day-to-day operations, he looks forward to being an ambassador for Sukup Manufacturing Co. and supporting its growth and success in sales and product innovation.

“While growing up, I always knew that I would work in the family business and was proud to be the first degreed engineer for the company” Charles said. “Evidently Dad thought it would be cheaper to raise an engineer rather than hire one! I was one of the few students at Iowa State that knew exactly what I would be doing after graduation.”

Commenting on growing up in the 56 year old business, Charles said, “Being a part of the growth and expansion of Sukup Manufacturing Co. has been a dream come true for me. It was humbling to come back as our first degreed engineer and be surrounded by so many talented and creative people. While many did not have formal degrees, their innovative ideas were key to our early success that we now take for granted.” Sukup Manufacturing Co.

In fulfillment of the aspiration to be family owned and operated, yet committed to the best professional management, the family shareholders of Sukup Manufacturing Co. recently elected John Lisle of Lisle Corporation, Clarinda, Iowa; Drew Vogel of Diamond Vogel, Orange City, Iowa; and Eric Lohmeier of NCP, Inc. of Des Moines, Iowa to its Board of Directors. Also, a search for a new CFO is being held. Charles said “It’s been the highest honor to serve as president for the last 25 years. I’m excited for our new leadership structure and the experience and wisdom our Board of Directors will bring to the company and our future!”
