The growth of the compact equipment market is worth your attention. While there are variations in how that categorization gets used, Sany thinks of compact equipment as all-purpose machines that perform in a confined area. For end-users and dealers, however, the big news here is that growth across the small and compact equipment market is leading to significant developments in competition, price, and innovation.

So, why all the fuss about compact equipment? Well, it comes down to a number of factors, including cost, utility, transportation, dealer network, and parts availability. Perhaps the biggest influencer here is cost. As with typical markets, growing demand inspires increased competition, which leads to competitive pricing. More OEMs are looking for ways to make it easier to buy their equipment, and that’s good news for buyers and dealers alike.

A big change when it comes to competition is the decline in brand loyalty, as the traditional giants of the equipment industry are losing their grip on the average buyer. According to Tito Sosa, Product Manager for Sany America,

“Cost is a huge motivator. More and more small equipment buyers are realizing the value and incentives that are offered by emerging brands and opting to invest where they have more influence.”

Running a close second to cost, utility is a big driver behind the surge in compact equipment. These machines are incredibly handy and can do a lot in a limited space. Take the SANY 35U, a mini excavator with an operating weight of 3.5 tons, dig depth of 10’ 2” and gross power of 24.4 HP. This 3.5-ton excavator is the

“best-selling size in the U.S. and the machine to watch,”

says Sosa.

With a limited tail swing radius and independent boom swing, the 35U is optimized for utility in extremely tight configurations. It balances power with smoothness, versatility, and fuel efficiency.

The agility and versatility of compact equipment are driving demand across audience segments. The construction and landscaping industries are big influencers in the market, finding equipment that can work in formerly unworkable spaces. Meanwhile, DIY-savvy homeowners have discovered that the equipment fits in their garage, and rental companies are capitalizing on equipment that is easily transported, is easy to operate, and can achieve a lot at a daily rate.

Transportability is another popular feature of compact equipment. Because DOT regulations limit non-commercial vehicles to 10,000 lbs., equipment like the Sany SY16U-SY35U can be hauled by anyone with a heavy-duty truck and trailer. This is a huge benefit for landscapers, utility companies, residential construction companies, equipment rental companies, or any user who has the means to tow their own equipment.

Case in point, Sany recently partnered with The Shed to offer three mini excavators for daily rentals. The Shed is a new and growing online rental platform that offers everything from party tents to medical equipment and now earth-moving equipment. Beginning in the Richmond, Virginia, and Denver, Colorado markets, The Shed offers the SY16, SY26, and SY35 excavators for daily rental.

“We are very fortunate to be the sole excavator partner with iShed. To be part of a vision, to be the Amazon of the rental space, is both exciting and rewarding,”

says Dean Heistand, Director of National Accounts for Sany America.

The growth of compact equipment and the changing user experience is having an impact on maintenance as more users are looking to service their equipment themselves. Smaller equipment means smaller parts, and smaller parts are easier to repair and replace. They’re also easier to ship and sell. As more and more buyers look to compact equipment to fill their needs, they are also looking for dealer networks and parts availability to maintain that equipment.

Sany can’t talk about parts without talking about the influence of globalization on the equipment industry. The availability of high-quality components and equipment from around the world has helped accelerate innovation, accessibility, and affordability of compact equipment. As Sosa puts it,

“The question is not about whether globalization is good or bad. Globalization is here. It’s ubiquitous in the equipment industry. The real question to ask is what brands are doing to make the most of globalization.”

Michael Erwood is Director of Dealer Development for SANY America and has worked in business development and corporate banking for decades, most recently with SANY Capital USA, the finance arm of SANY America. He recently shared the latest updates on new dealers joining the SANY dealer network and SANY’s plans for continued growth in 2020.

Five New Dealer Partners

Interest in SANY equipment has been surging, said Erwood, including demand for the new motor grader and drum roller revealed at ConExpo earlier this year. Prospective new SANY dealers have told Erwood they are impressed with the company’s overall vision for growth in North America, the broad range of equipment offerings, and the global strength of the SANY brand.

“Dealer interest remains strong, and SANY is actively executing its strategy to expand its dealer network across the United States,”

said Erwood.

In just the first few months of the year, five new dealers have joined the SANY dealer network, from the Northeast to the Southwest. And Erwood says there are many more currently working to start the process of offering SANY equipment at their locations.

Northeast Heavy Metal LLC (SANY New York)

Based in Lockport, N.Y., just outside of Buffalo, Northeast Heavy Metal LLC (SANY New York), has partnered with SANY to provide excavators, wheel loaders, and other construction equipment. The dealership is the third SANY dealer location in New York state and will provide machinery, service, and support for customers in Western New York and the Finger Lakes region.

Central Power Systems & Services

Located just a few miles from the Missouri River in Maryland Heights, just outside of St. Louis, is Central Power Systems & Services Inc. For more than 60 years, the company has delivered a full range of products and services for construction, oil and gas, mining, military, and many other industries, and now offers the full line of SANY construction equipment to customers at the Gateway to the West.

A1 Iron Corporation

Also joining the dealer network is A1 Iron Corporation in La Vista, Nebraska. In addition to providing the full line of SANY equipment along with service and maintenance options for customers in the Great Plains, A1 Iron also has the distinction of being the first exclusive SANY dealer in the state of Nebraska.

Trinity Equipment

On the Pacific Coast, SANY welcomed Trinity Equipment, Inc. in Colton, California. This veteran-owned and operated dealer is serving customers throughout Southern California, providing heavy machinery for construction projects and landscaping operations across the region.

Innovative Equipment Services LLC (EquipmentShare)

Finally, Innovative Equipment Services LLC (EquipmentShare) in Phoenix, Arizona is not only the latest SANY dealer, but holds two unique distinctions. It is the first dealer located in the state, and also marks the sixth dealer location for EquipmentShare with exclusive SANY retail distribution rights.

Building Partnerships for Success

Unlike some vendor relationships, SANY takes pride in truly working as a partner with each dealer, taking time to truly understand each dealer’s goals and challenges while working alongside them to make sure they succeed. SANY works to become a strategic partner with its dealers, working to provide tools and services that enhance the value of their business and equip them with everything needed to be successful as a dealer.

“We have a comprehensive and efficient new dealer evaluation process that focuses not only on the financial capabilities and geographic location of the dealer, but on the construction of a detailed strategic plan,”

said Erwood.

“The strategic plan covers all aspects of a dealer’s operations and provides a roadmap to success. SANY takes the time to understand the strengths and motivations of its dealer partner to maximize a dealer’s return on investment.”

As part of this process, SANY representatives complete tours of facilities to understand operations on the ground and conduct interviews with management teams at each dealership to meet them personally and start forging a working partnership. SANY also performs financial, operational, and market research as part of the evaluation, working to make sure prospective dealers are set up to both be successful as a dealership and deliver on the SANY promise for every customer.

More than Machines – Sany Delivers Partnerships #MadeForAmerica

Both customers and dealer partners praise the performance, competitive pricing, and industry-leading five-year, 5,000-hour warranty that is synonymous with SANY equipment. SANY works to deliver reliability and performance to its customers and takes the same approach with its dealer relationships. Time and again, new dealers say that working with SANY is unlike the relationships they’ve had with other OEMs, with SANY investing time and effort to forge a true partnership, providing the tools, services, and support they need to succeed. This relationship also helps SANY ensure that from coast to coast, SANY customers know they will find the same consistent quality, performance, and assistance at their local SANY dealer.

SANY America is growing its family of excavators in 2020, bringing more machines that deliver the power, performance and capabilities needed to tackle the toughest jobs. With two new excavator models making their debut at ConExpo 2020 – and even more planned – there are more reasons than ever to discover how SANY delivers More than Machines.

Growing the midsized excavator market

Midsized equipment has become more and more popular for use in commercial and industrial material handling, rental, forestry and agriculture applications in the past few years. And that’s included a big increase in interest in SANY’s medium excavator lineup. In fact, according to EDA data, the SY215C represented nearly 8 percent of all midsized (21-24 metric ton) excavators sold to independent rental companies. In the larger 24-28 metric ton category, the SY265C was the excavator of choice for over 9.5 percent of industrial and commercial material handling buyers, more than 9 percent of independent rental company clients, and over 6 percent of agricultural customers.

With such a surge in the midsized market, SANY is looking to offer customers even more versatility with two new medium excavators being unveiled at ConExpo – the SY155U and SY225C.

SY155U short radius excavator

The SY155U is a short-radius excavator that delivers performance and versatility for those in the market for a medium-sized excavator at the lower end of the midsized market. Powered by a 105-horsepower engine and weighing in at 35,274 pounds, the SY155U offers a nearly 18-foot dig depth capability and a 27’ 4” overall maximum reach while offering a minimal tailswing. Plus, with a bucket breakout rated for 23,155 pounds, this new SANY excavator is a great option for moving materials around any narrow or confined jobsite, as well as in shipping yards or agricultural operations.

“As construction sites continue to get tighter and as work in metro areas and cities gets narrower, short-radius excavators have become a more popular and in-demand item.”

said Ben Miller, Vice President of Sales – Construction Equipment for SANY America.

By engineering the SY155U to have a minimal tailswing, it is purpose built for work in between buildings and in crowded urban construction environments. It’s also ideal for roadside contractors and companies working on road repair or construction projects. With the smaller footprint and tighter range of motion, the SY155U can get the job done in locations where local restrictions call for minimal or no road or lane closures. This means the SY155U is certain to be a popular choice for road crews working on culverts and bridge repairs or urban roadway improvements.

SY225C medium excavator

The second new excavator, the SY225C, fills in the gap between SANY’s existing SY215C and SY265C. This new workhorse offers 164 horsepower with a 54,013-pound operating weight, and is ready to tackle a variety of different jobs. With a 21.5-foot dig depth and max reach of 33’10”, plus a 28,551-pound bucket breakout rating, this excavator is built to dig, lift and move a variety of materials.

“The SY225C really fills a need in between the SY215C and SY265C,” said Miller. “The new SY225C offers a more stable undercarriage, a greater counterweight to handle a wider range of attachments and additional hydraulic lines – including the quick coupler connection – that make it much more versatile in the field and easy to switch from something like a bucket to a hammer without the need to pound pins.”

With an exceptionally versatile range of capabilities, the SY225C is a particularly excellent addition to the SANY product line for both general contractors and for rental fleet owners. The SY225C ships standard with auxiliary hydraulic lines down the boom as well as the quick coupler connection, which means owners can quickly change attachments on the SY225C to meet the different needs of any job or different rental customer requirements. In addition, the SY225C is the third SANY excavator model that is produced in the United States at the SANY America headquarters in Georgia.
