2020 is no exception, this year Merlo’s evolution continues and has led to the development of the first electric off-road telehandler: the e-Worker. As proof of the innovative system adopted by this revolutionary range, numerous international awards have been received, starting with the gold medals received in Verona for the “Samoter Innovation Award” and in Paris at the “Grand Prix Matériel” awarded by Chantiers de France and DLR.

Now, a further award for the technology developed has added to the list of the Cuneo-based company: the “EIMA International 20/21 Mentions” for the “Integrally electric transmission on eWorker”.

The innovative transmission introduces software that controls both the torque and the rotation of the individual motors placed on the wheels, in order to guarantee the correct speed of every single wheel in all possible operating conditions of the telehandler. Moreover, in case of the front internal wheel slipping, the other wheels will always guarantee the required rotation speed and the torque necessary for the correct performance of the activity.

In order to exploit the full potential of the electric units, but at the same time limit consumption in continuous operations, the machine is equipped with a control system that monitors the instantaneous and average energy consumption of the vehicle.

The ability to handle material safely and with maximum ease of use has always distinguished Merlo telescopic handlers in agricultural, construction, and industrial applications, without differences. The continuous search for specific innovative solutions and technologies, in order to satisfy the needs of customers, has led Merlo SpA to the creation of an exclusive range of telescopic handlers with small dimensions and respectful of the environment as they are 100% powered by electric batteries.

This revolutionary range combines the performance of a traditional telescopic tractor with the fuel consumption and reduced dimensions of an industrial forklift truck. According to the standard cycle of the EN16796-1/-4 standard, the consumption is 6 kWh/h, comparable to that of industrial forklift trucks with 2 drive wheels and small tires. e-Worker, on the other hand, features 4 drive wheels, large agricultural tires and is designed to work off-road.

The top features of this range are, therefore: the complete reduction of noise levels and polluting emissions, increased maneuverability in confined spaces, and the drastic reduction of operating costs compared to similar models equipped with heat engines powered by diesel fuel.

The new range is designed to be used in closed environments such as stables, warehouses, material sheds, industries, and underground applications; it also guarantees operation and traction even in off-road situations to meet the needs of municipalities, agriculture, construction, and landfills.

The advanced software makes it possible to monitor battery status, residual charge information, transfer speed, and all work parameters, displayed in real-time on the on-board computer in the cab.

The range consists of two models.

E-Worker 25.5-90 – 4 driving wheels

Data analyzed by Unacea (Italian Construction Machinery Union) and Cer (European Research Centre) were presented today at Veronafiere during the 7^th edition of SaMoTer Day, the event organized for the run-up to the 31st SaMoTer, the international construction machinery exhibition scheduled 3-7 March 2021.

These figures are in line with the setback for world output caused by the pandemic, although there may already be some light at the end of the tunnel. The Unacea-Cer study seems to confirm this: the sector in Italy will probably improve in the second half-year to contain losses and close 2020, in the most optimistic scenario, at -8.7%, equal to 1,414 items of construction equipment in lost sales. Prospects for telehandlers (-9.7) and concrete machines (-10%) are similar, while road vehicles may see a downturn of just 2.7%.

The data summarised by Unacea-Cer also envisages a worsening scenario where new shocks would cause respective setbacks of -27.8% for earth-moving machinery, -23.4% for telehandlers, -22.8% for concrete machinery, and -18.3% for road-building machinery.

Meanwhile, from July onwards, Italy seems already to have resumed expansion thanks to the end of the lockdown period and the stabilizing effects of the economic policies implemented. The situation is expected to settle in 2021. This is good news for a supply chain worth more than 3.5 billion euros in Italy that in 2019 achieved two-figure growth over the previous year (+16.9%), for total sales of over 19,500 units.

SaMoTer Day also saw the presentation of the “Construction machinery: a strategic component of the circular economy” position paper; here, Unacea summarises a series of environmental proposals concerning the role of machinery in tenders and the input that demolition and recycling equipment can provide as regards reducing construction waste.

SaMoTer 2021 will be an opportunity for manufacturers and companies to capitalize on the recovery: the exhibition hosted at Veronafiere will be held together with the 9th edition of Asphaltica, Siteb  (Italian Road Asphalt Bitumen Association), the event for the bitumen and road infrastructure sector, and – for the first time – LETExpo, the show focusing on transport, logistics and sustainable intermodal services organized by Alis (Sustainable Intermodal Logistics Association).

The Board of Directors of Veronafiere SpA met today and acknowledged the impossibility of ensuring proper timing for set-up, dismantling and logistics operations for upcoming trade fair events. In relation to the requirements of the ordinance issued by the Ministry of Health and the Veneto Region concerning Covid-19, it was decided to postpone the events scheduled for March and early April 2020.

Samoter, the international construction machinery exhibition, scheduled 21-25 March will now be held 16-20 May 2020. The two events held in conjunction with Samoter will also share the same date: Asphaltica, the road infrastructure event, and LetExpo, the sustainable logistics trade fair.

There is also a change of date for the first edition of B/Open, the certified organic food and natural self-care event, which moves from 1-3 April 2020 to 22-24 June 2020.

The measures implemented by Veronafiere join the other changes to the calendar announced yesterday which affect upcoming events in March: Model Expo Italy and Elettroexpo were postponed to 21-22 November 2020 and Innovabiomed is now scheduled for 15-16 June 2020.
