Notably, tractors with over 100 horsepower saw an increase of 5.2% annually and 3.6% in December. Combine harvesters ended the year positively, with a 1.7% rise in sales in December. The smallest tractor segment, under 40 horsepower, experienced the most significant drop, with a 10.7% decrease over the year, following a 5.8% decline in December.

For Canada, 4WD farm tractor sales jumped 64.9 percent in December and finished the year up 44.4 percent overall. Overall unit tractor sales finished 2023 down 14 percent for the month of December and 10.7 percent overall. All tractor segments other than 4WD units experienced double-digit declines in December, but combine harvesters did close out the year with YTD gains of 5.5 percent.

AEM’s Senior Vice President, Curt Blades, expressed optimism about the growth in U.S. sales of combine harvesters and tractors: “

“Seeing year-over-year gains in U.S. sales of both combine harvesters and 100+hp tractors is a welcome sight as 2024 gets underway. And while several tractor segments fell last month versus 2023, we’re still confident in the strength of the equipment market and remain optimistic about its long-term growth.”

An autonomous electric tractor is a driverless agricultural machine used for tillage and other agricultural tasks. Sensors and machine vision systems are examples of advanced technology components used to perform various agricultural tasks. Automatic agricultural vehicles have high traction (or torque) at slower speeds. These tractors use GPS and other wireless technologies to cultivate the land without the use of a driver. They only need to track progress at the control station with the assistance of a supervisor or operate under the supervision of a manned tractor. Precision agriculture focuses on maximising returns using the fewest resources. Farm owners can use tractors more effectively with the help of GPS devices and computers.

The Purdue University/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer is a nationwide measure of the health of the U.S. agricultural economy. From the latest report, the Ag Economy Barometer has registered a dipped down 12 points from February and 36% lower than March 2021, marking the weakest farmer sentiment reading since May 2020, the early days of the pandemic. The decline was driven by producers’ weaker perceptions of both current conditions in the agricultural economy and expectations for the future. The Index of Current Conditions declined 19 points to 113, down 44% from March 2021, and the Index of Future Expectations declined 9 points to 113, down 31% from the same time last year. The Ag Economy Barometer is calculated each month from 400 U.S. agricultural producers’ responses to a telephone survey.

“Concern about the war’s impact on input prices and input availability on their farming operations was paramount in the minds of producers responding to the March survey and was a major factor in this month’s decline in sentiment,”

said James Mintert, the barometer’s principal investigator and director of Purdue University’s Center for Commercial Agriculture.

The March survey provided the first opportunity to ask producers how they expect the war in Ukraine to affect U.S. agriculture. Producers overwhelmingly said they expect input prices to be most affected (63% of respondents), followed by crop prices (33% of respondents), and livestock prices (3% of respondents). Responding to a related question, 19% of respondents chose “availability of inputs” as their biggest concern in their farming operation this year, which was equal to the percentage of producers who chose “lower crop and/or livestock prices” as their biggest concern.

Diving deeper into producers’ expectations for farm input prices in the upcoming year, 57% expect farm input prices to rise by 20% or more, and 36% think input prices will rise by 30% or more. And, just over one-fourth (27%) of producers say they’ve had difficulty purchasing crop inputs for the 2022 crop season. Producers report that supply chain problems persist across a wide range of inputs, with herbicides, fertilizer and farm machinery parts posing the most problems.

Producers continue to say that they expect their farm’s financial performance to decline in 2022 compared to 2021. The March Farm Financial Performance Index, which asks producers whether they expect their farm’s financial performance in 2022 to be better than, worse than or about the same as in 2021, was up slightly (4 points) at a reading of 87 but remains 30% lower than a year earlier.

“When producers think about how their farm will fare financially in 2022, it’s clear they do not expect commodity price strength to offset the dramatic rise in farm production costs they are experiencing,”

Mintert said.

Producers do not view this as a good time to make large investments in their farming operations as the Farm Capital Investment Index fell again in March. The index was 6 points lower than a month earlier and 59% lower than in March 2021 when it was near its all-time peak. In a pair of follow-up questions, 62% of respondents said their plans for farm machinery purchases in the upcoming year are lower than a year earlier, which is the most negative response to that question since May 2020. When asked a similar question about their plans for farm building and grain bin construction, 68% of respondents chose “lower,” which was the most negative response received to that question since its first inclusion in a barometer survey in May 2021.

Supply chain problems continue to haunt both the farm machinery and construction sectors and are one of the reasons producers don’t view this as a good time for large investments. For example, 42% of producers this month said their machinery purchase plans were impacted by low farm machinery inventories, consistent with industry reports that major machinery manufacturers are experiencing order backlogs.

U.S. total farm tractor sales gained 0.3 percent for the month of December compared to 2020, while U.S. self-propelled combine sales for the month saw a gain of 25.3 percent. Those gains contributed to a total gain for the year of 10.3 percent for tractors, and 24.7 percent for combine harvesters. For the year, the only segment in either the U.S. or Canada that gained less than ten percent was sub-40hp tractors in the U.S., growing 8.9 percent. The overall growth leader for tractors in the U.S. was 100+hp 2WD tractors, growing 24.1 percent, followed by articulated 4WD tractors, up 18.3 percent. A total of 317,897 tractors and 6,272 combine harvesters found new homes in the U.S. in 2021.

In Canada, sales of tractors for the month of December grew 10.5 percent, while combines fell 17.6 percent year-over-year. However, total sales for 2021 were up 19.4 percent for tractors, and up 23.1 percent for combines. The slowest-selling segment in Canada, the 40-100hp 2WD range of tractors, grew an impressive 14.4 percent for the year, while the leading segment, 100+hp 2WD units grew 33.6 percent, followed closely by articulated 4WD units up 32.7 percent. A total of 33,463 tractors and 1,786 combine harvesters were sold in Canada in 2021.

“At DeLaval, our vision to make sustainable food production possible is at the core of everything we do. In order to achieve that vision, we must take into account both our own operations as well as our customers’ operations, working to provide them with sustainable solutions that fit their unique goals,”

said Fabian Bernal, recently appointed Head of Sustainability for DeLaval Group.

In the report, DeLaval shares progress toward improving sustainability for its dairy producer customers. These include:

Reducing the environmental impact of every liter/pound of milk produced through the development of safe solutions that improve efficiency and milk yield with animal welfare in mind

Continuing to improve on-farm sustainability through efficient innovations, such as automated milking and feeding systems, better and gentler liners that improve milk extraction and animal welfare, reduced-temperature system cleaning solutions, and more

Focus on farm profitability for customers – as farms produce more milk per animal, they have a lower environmental footprint and are more economically sustainable

Ensuring animal welfare is at the center of new innovations – healthy animals require less medical intervention, produce higher quality and volumes of milk for more years

DeLaval has achieved the following improvements toward their vision of increasing sustainability in production:

Decreased waste by 4% and volatile organic compounds by 10%

Water use decreased 2% despite an increase in sales volume

Decreased lost time accident rate from 4.34 in 2019 to 3.61 in 2020

Staff turnover decreased to 12%

Increased percentage of female leaders to 23%

Commitment to establishing a diverse and inclusive workplace through new initiatives: unconscious bias training, updated recruitment policy, and working with third-party groups focused on gender diversity

Adapted to the challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic by placing employee health and wellbeing as the top priority. Supported employees in setting up work-from-home stations, held COVID-19 safety educational sessions, and had frequent stress and mental health check-ins; all while all key functions continued operating to serve customers.

Courtesy of: AEM

U.S. total farm tractor sales rose 22.7 percent in April compared to 2020, which was the first month of the current sales growth trend, while U.S. self-propelled combine sales fell 3.2 percent. U.S. tractor sales grew across every segment, with the biggest gains in the 100+hp segment, up 29.2 percent. The midsize 40-100hp units were up 28.8 percent, and the sub-40hp class is up 20.8 percent. Four-wheel-drive units grew 15.1 percent, putting them up 12 percent year-to-date.

For Canada, April monthly tractor and combine sales were positive across all segments, with the 4WD segment nearly doubling, up 93.3 percent to 201 units sold, while total farm tractor sales were up 72.3 percent to 3,671 units sold. Self-propelled combines also grew 23.1 percent.

“April was the month we were watching to see how this growth trend would look once it hit the official twelve-month mark,” said Curt Blades, Senior Vice President of Ag Services at the Association of Equipment Manufacturers.

“Seeing the larger row-crop units leading the way in segment gains shows the pull rising commodity prices have been having on equipment sales.”

The “why” behind record-high AG equipment sales: the floor to Curt Blades

“We’re operating in a very interesting market right now,” says Curt Blades, Senior VP of Ag Services for the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM).

Curt Blades, Senior VP of Ag Services for the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) about Ag Equipment sales in the U.S. and Canada. Courtesy of: AEM

So far, in the first quarter of 2021, total farm tractor unit sales are up more than 50 percent in the U.S., and nearly 60 percent in Canada, according to the AEM Ag Tractor Combine Report released monthly.

“For the last twelve months, we’ve seen a dramatic rise in under-40-horsepower, or small tractor sales in North America, both U.S. and Canada,”

says Blades. “This is due largely to a lot of the industries that have done very well during the pandemic, like luxury items or things that have to do with the home.”

Small tractors fall into that category as well.

Blades says the small tractors that have been spiking are largely going to the suburbs with larger lots to help homeowners haul rocks and dirt, work around trees, and overall improve the property. However, starting later in 2020, larger row-crop and articulated 4WD tractors have also enjoyed increasing sales success.

One reason has been the gradual increase, over the past five years, of the average age of the ag fleet in both the U.S. and Canada. However, with commodity prices increasing, and trade difficulties starting to ease, not only is the replacement market doing well, but farmers are upgrading their operations with newer technology.

AEM AG Tractor & combine report – March 2021. Courtesy of: AEM

“We’re seeing an increase in commodity prices. We’re seeing some of the uncertainty of trade wane,” says Blades. “As a result, people are willing to invest a little more in their farming operations and we’re seeing that reflected in capital equipment.”

There has been some difference in the past 12 months between sales in the U.S. and Canada, however, Blades says it’s typical for one market to “lead” the other.

“In this current recovery, we’ve seen the U.S. has been leading Canada,”

says Blades. “But both markets are particularly strong right now on both sides of the border.”

AEM AG Tractor & combine report – March 2021. Courtesy of: AEM

Blades does advise that equipment inventories having been reduced significantly through these sales trends. However, he says dealers are being proactive, especially when it comes to keeping parts for their service centers in stock, but farmers looking to buy new machines may have to order several months ahead of expected delivery.

“I think you’re seeing a lot of optimism out there. And that optimism is leading to a lot of new equipment purchases, but also farmers thinking about what their businesses are going to look like into the future,” says Blades.

“It is an interesting time that we’re operating in. Tractor sales are strong, commodity sales are particularly good, and optimism is at an all-time high in the farming community.”

Nutrien also launched six commitments to address the challenge of sustainably feeding a growing global population while protecting the planet. The Feeding the Future Plan has action pathways to help transform agriculture by the year 2030:

Enable growers to adopt sustainable and productive agricultural products and practices on 75 million acres globally

Launch and scale a comprehensive Carbon Program, empowering growers and the agriculture industry to accelerate climate-smart agriculture and soil carbon sequestration while rewarding growers for their efforts

Achieve at least a 30 percent reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Scope 1 + 2) per tonne of our products produced*

Invest in new technologies and pursue the transition to low-carbon fertilizers, including blue and green ammonia

Leverage our farm-focused technology partnerships and investments to drive positive impact in industry and grower innovation and inclusion

Create new financial solutions for growers to strengthen social, economic and environmental outcomes in agriculture

The world’s population is expected to reach 10 billion people by the year 2050, and innovation is needed to increase food production for generations to come. The Feeding the Future Plan reflects Nutrien’s commitment to drive systemic change by helping to scale sustainable and inclusive agriculture. It also includes Nutrien’s commitment to set science-based climate emissions targets through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Nutrien’s 2021 ESG Report is a valuable tool for investors and other stakeholders to review Nutrien’s key material ESG risks and opportunities.

Executive Commentary

Chuck Magro, President and CEO, Nutrien, said,

“Nutrien is focused on meeting the United Nations’ Zero Hunger Sustainable Development Goal in the coming decade by helping growers increase food production in a sustainable manner. Our 2030 commitments and ESG performance targets are ambitious, but necessary, which is why we are dedicated to working across our value chain on initiatives like our comprehensive Carbon Program to build a pathway forward that will help lead the next wave of agriculture’s evolution. This effort drives at the core of our strategy to feed more people, using less resources and with fewer emissions.”

“We know a collaborative effort is required to address climate change and feed the world. With a long-term goal to scale our programs and create real, lasting change, Nutrien is encouraging stakeholders to come together to evolve the systems and policies needed to address these challenges. As we strive to transform our food system, we encourage the sharing of information and pooling of resources for a new generation of systems-based solutions.”

“We take our role in feeding the future seriously. Our direction is clear. Join us on our journey,”

added Magro.

Nutrien will host an ESG stakeholder update to speak in more detail to our ESG plans and our comprehensive Carbon Program on May 17, 2021 in association with our Annual General Meeting.

Placement Maximizing corn yields begin by planting the seed with proper depth, downforce, and spacing.

AGCO Corporation has released the final yield results from its 2020 Fendt Momentum Crop Tour.

During the 2020 growing season, field demonstration plots were planted in five locations in the United States, including Illinois, Minnesota, Ohio, North Dakota, and South Dakota. In addition to evaluating the effect of equipment-induced soil compaction at all locations, the AGCO team continued its comparisons of various planting depths, downforce levels, and seed singulation on corn yield at the South Dakota, Minnesota, and Ohio locations.

“During the past five years, we have conducted more than 50 field comparisons in North America and around the globe demonstrating the importance of proper corn seed placement. What we’ve shown is that there’s no substitute for getting seed planted into adequate soil moisture at a depth sufficient enough to allow for uniform emergence and good nodal root development.”

says Jason Lee, AGCO agronomist, and farm solutions specialist.

The AGCO team compared corn plant performance and yield based on three variables:

1. Depth – Corn was planted at six depths ranging from 1 inch to 3.5 inches.
2. Downforce – Corn was planted with light downforce, heavy downforce, and real-time automatic downforce control provided by DeltaForce automated downforce from Precision Planting.
3. Spacing – Corn was planted at two singulation rates – 93% and 99% seed spacing accuracy.

Corn was planted with a Fendt Momentum planter pulled by a row-crop tractor running dual tires. All comparisons were planted in 30-inch rows, with the exception of the North Dakota location, where the corn was planted in 22-inch rows.

This was especially evident at the Chillicothe, Ohio, location where soil was wet at planting, then dry during the growing season. Corn planted 1 inch deep exhibited more ear tip-back and yielded 13 bushels less per acre than corn planted 1.5 inches or deeper, due to poor nodal root development plus dry growing conditions. At that location, corn planted 3 inches deep yielded 6 bushels more per acre than corn planted 3.5 inches deep. Courtesy of news.agcocorp.com

Takeaway No. 1: Plant into moisture and no less than 1.5 inches deep

Crop Tour comparisons verify there can be yield penalties when corn is planted too shallow or too deep. Plant too shallow (1-inch-deep or less), and the corn plant’s nodal roots will develop at or just below the soil surface. Limited nodal root development is detrimental especially when conditions turn hot and dry. Lee says this was especially evident at the Ohio location where the soil was wet at planting, then dry during the growing season. Corn planted 1-inch-deep exhibited more tip-back on the ears than corn in rows planted at 1.5 inches or deeper, due to the combination of poor nodal root development and dry growing conditions.

“When we get tip-back, there is little or no kernel development on the last one or more inches of the ear tip. That’s lost yield potential. Over the past five years, we found that corn planted 1.5-inches-deep yielded 13 more bushels per acre on average than corn planted 1-inch-deep. At current corn prices, we’re talking about $50 or more in lost return per acre due to planting too shallow.”

Lee says.

In certain conditions, planting too deep can reduce the total number of plants that emerge and cause uneven emergence. Reduced emergence lowers the overall plant population; uneven emergence leads to runt plants that can’t compete with their neighbors for resources. Both reduce yield potential. At the Ohio location, corn planted 3 inches deep yielded 6 bushels per acre more in 2020 than corn planted 3.5 inches deep — a difference that closely mirrors the five-year average.

“Typically, a planting depth of 2 inches will provide the maximum yield potential in most planting conditions. This can vary, however, and adjustments should be made based on soil moisture and the extended weather forecast. We know that planting depth is a simple adjustment to set, but it’s such a critical piece to maximizing corn yield.”

Lee says.

Too much downforce (right) can create sidewall compaction in the seed trench, which can lead to root development issues, causing yield loss. Crop Tour comparisons show a yield reduction of about 13 bushels per acre when downforce is too light and a 2- to 3-bushel-per-acre penalty for heavy downforce as compared to automatic downforce (left). Courtesy of news.agcocorp.com

Takeaway No. 2: Don’t skimp on downforce

Once proper planting depth is determined, it’s crucial that enough downforce is placed on each row unit to maintain that depth. Inconsistent depth control can also lead to uneven corn emergence, resulting in yield loss.

Since 2016, AGCO Crop Tour plots have compared light, heavy and automatic downforce. Too much downforce (right) can create sidewall compaction in the seed trench, which can lead to root development issues, causing yield loss. Crop Tour comparisons show a yield reduction of about 13 bushels per acre when downforce is too light and a 2- to a 3-bushel-per-acre penalty for heavy downforce as compared to automatic downforce (left).

“Soil type and condition changes across a field, and growers have different options for maintaining corn seed depth, including spring, airbag, and hydraulic downforce systems. As with planting depth, downforce is a balance. Set it too light, and the seed doesn’t get placed to the right depth because there’s simply not enough force to keep it there. However, too much downforce can create sidewall compaction in the seed trench, which can lead to root development issues.”

Lee says.

During the past five years, AGCO Crop Tour trials have compared three downforce protocols: light downforce, heavy downforce, and automatic downforce. The results demonstrate that automatic downforce, which adjusts to field conditions in real-time, provides a yield advantage.

“On average, when downforce is too light, we see a yield reduction of about 13 bushels per acre when compared to automatic downforce. By contrast, we see a 2- to a 3-bushel-per-acre penalty for heavy downforce. So, if you aren’t running a planter with automatic downforce and want to err on the side of caution, set your downforce on the heavy side.”

Lee says.

Uniform spacing of corn plants within the row is crucial to maximizing yield potential.
Takeaway No. 3: Uniform seed spacing increases yield

In addition to uniform emergence, the uniform spacing of corn plants within the row is crucial to maximizing yield potential. Evenly spaced plants result in equal competition for essential resources, allowing for optimal growth. The result is more bushels per acre.

Uniform spacing of corn plants within the row is crucial to maximizing yield potential. AGCO Crop Tour plots compared 93 percent and 99 percent seed singulation using the vSet metering system. Yield results over five years show that a 6 percent reduction in singulation results in a yield loss of about 5 bushels per acre, a good reason to avoid skips and doubles when planting.

“We want to avoid what is referred to as ‘skips’ and ‘doubles. Skips occur when the planter doesn’t drop a seed, resulting in a missing plant and no ear whatsoever. Doubles occur when the planter drops two seeds close together. The result is two smaller ears that don’t produce the same yield as ears from evenly spaced plants.”

Lee says.

A planter’s ability to drop one seed at a time is referred to as seed singulation. Crop Tour field demonstrations have compared plots planted at two singulation rates – 93% and 99% using the vSet metering system.

“Our five-year data shows that 6% reduction in singulation results in a yield loss of about 5 bushels per acre. So growers really want to avoid skips and doubles.”

Lee says.

Crop Tour 2021: New year, new questions

Lee adds that while the AGCO team will continue many of the field trials from the past five years, some new questions are likely to be posted in 2021.

“We’re still working out the details, but we would like to do some plots comparing plant populations, the impact of starter fertilizer, as well as differences between types of tractor tires and tracks. The whole team is excited to ask new questions, help growers improve their planting practices, and ensure their corn crops reach full yield potential.”
