The Working Group brings together the full value-chain of the PEI potato sector to exchange information, develop strategies to determine and help mitigate impacts of potato wart on the sector, and identify potential short and long-term solutions to current trade disruptions.

Its membership includes representatives from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and Global Affairs Canada, as well as representatives from the Government of Prince Edward Island, the PEI Potato Board, PEI seed and fresh potato growers, and key potato processors.

During the meeting, the CFIA outlined the steps they are taking to gather the scientific evidence needed to assure their U.S. counterpart agency, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), of the safety of trade of table and processing potatoes. The CFIA is aiming to conduct another round of technical discussions with APHIS next week.

The working group will continue to meet to assess the impacts on PEI potato farmers and those along the value chain and is expected to examine all options to find end-point destinations for the sale and further processing of the existing stock of potatoes in PEI, and other measures to support affected farmers. The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, will attend the next meeting on Monday, November 29.

The central outlet allows more flexible positioning of the MH 24x

The standard configuration options for the MH 24x now include a central outlet for the product flow, as an alternative to the traditional side outlet. The central outlet feeds out the product in the middle, behind the machine. This significantly increases the capacity and provides more flexibility in the placement of the receiving hopper at the beginning of the storage line.

Presentation conveyor provides even more efficient cleaning and dosing on MH 24x with two units

If the MH 24x with two units is mainly used in heavy soil or with long products, then the optional presentation conveyor is a good choice. The presentation conveyor is located upstream of the first roller unit and provides more even distribution of the product. This way, optimal cleaning and dosing can be achieved even in difficult conditions.

Greater spacing of up to 70 mm for PU spiral rollers on the MH 24x simplifies pre-sorting

The PU spiral rollers of the MH 24x’s second unit now feature a larger separation between the rollers, of up to 70 mm, as standard. This makes it easier to perform pre-sorting with this roller unit. This larger spacing is available on all MH 24x – 2 units that have the second unit fitted with Clean-Boost (with 6 or 7 rollers). The total range of this roller unit has increased by 20% and is now 5 – 70 mm.

As a reminder, with Dewulf’s revolutionary Clean-Boost technology the speed of the electrically driven PU spiral rollers on an MH 24x can be briefly significantly increased to clear them of clinging soil. This ensures that the machine is always operating at optimal cleaning capacity.

New cost-effective single-row switch on/off

Grimme uses a new single-row control system as the basis for Section Control on the cup planters type GL 420 and GL 430. This new development is a cost-effective alternative to the common hydraulic single row drive.

The common drive for four planting elements is provided by only one hydraulic motor, driving a continuous shaft. Electromagnetic clutches are now mounted for each individual planting element. The planting elements can be switched on and off quickly and conveniently from the operator terminal. As an option, the planting elements can be automatically switched on and off by using Section Control, depending on the GPS position.

Protection against soil erosion with Grimme belt planters

For the 2021 season, the GRIMME GB 430, a four-row potato belt planter can be optionally equipped with the dyking system called TerraProtect PRO (patent pending) for erosion control in potato cultivation.

The system TerraProtect consists of a loosening tine with integrated stone protection and a subsequent small dyking device. The loosening tine loosens the underground and increases the capacity of water absorption of the soil. The dyking-share, adapted to the contour of the ridges, generates traverse-dams (so-called dykes) for water storage. Thus preventing valuable soil from being washed out during heavy rainfall. This protects the productive soil and ensures an even water supply for the crop.

The TerraProtect PRO works together with intelligent control for comfortable operation from the tractor’s cab. The maximum protection against soil erosion is achieved by an even spacing of the dykes, so an equal amount of water can be stored everywhere. This is made possible by an automatic control system that adapts the frequency of dyking to variable driving speeds. The TerraProtect PRO offers convenient single ridge switching for each dyker and an integrated spraying track switch-off for increased comfort.

Operator-friendly coupling of planter and tractor

For easy and convenient coupling resp. uncoupling of the machine, all available drawbars for the trailed GL 430 cup-platers are now equipped with a hydraulic jack to stand as standard. At the same time, the GL 430 receives a new hose cabinet for the hydraulic and air connections. Furthermore, the hose routing has been optimized for simplified connection with the tractor.

The Enduro is a 4-row self-propelled sieving harvester on tires. The harvester is the result of several years of intensive development, which included input from agricultural contractors and potato growers. The Enduro is clearly the culmination of Dewulf’s more than 30 years of experience in the field of self-propelled harvesters for potatoes. The machine on tires is, on the one hand, equipped with new technologies in the areas of ground pressure, product cleaning and flow, and buffer capacity. On the other hand, it also contains the familiar Dewulf technology that has proven its added value time and again on many potato fields throughout the years.

Dewulf developed the Enduro with three key concepts in mind: product-friendliness, capacity, and ease of use. This is clear to see in many aspects of the machine. In terms of ground pressure, the Enduro boasts the best figures in its segment with pressure as low as 1.5 kg/cm2. This is achieved through a sophisticated system of weight distribution over three axles and by the optional tires with VF technology. Dewulf calls the ensemble of technologies that result in the harvester’s low ground pressure ‘Soil-Saver’. Because the machine’s center of gravity is located further to the rear, the Enduro also ensures that the ridges will not be damaged by the front wheels, even in wet conditions.

Just like the Kwatro, the manufacturer’s other 4-row sieving harvester, the Enduro has no
constrictions along with its sieving webs. This results in optimal sieving capacity throughout the machine. A unique feature found nowhere else in the world is the driver’s ability to easily and steplessly adjust the inclination of the cleaning module between 0° and 12°, based on the cleaning need in the field.

Moreover, the module with axial rollers can be bypassed at any inclination angle for greater flexibility. The Enduro’s ring elevator uses patented new technology. Capacity and product-friendliness were combined in this ring elevator, which was given the name ‘Fill Tastic’. The ring elevator has a high capacity of 200 tonnes/h and achieves this at a very potato-friendly speed, which is automatically regulated via a sensor. The 2-part bunker with discharge elevator, with a practical volume of 10 tonnes, is the largest in its segment.

Because the fixed bunker floor is followed by a discharge elevator with bar webs, excess soil is sieved out during unloading. The Enduro’s discharge elevator reaches over 4 full rows, so you can always easily unload into a tipper. While doing so, the tipping top ensures a product-friendly process, as the drop height of the product into the tipper is always kept to a minimum. The introduction campaign for the Enduro is the biggest in Dewulf’s 75-year history. The manufacturer would have liked to have presented the Enduro in person during Interpom, the Belgian trade fair for the potato sector, but the current pandemic compelled them to seek an alternative.

The result was a live online unveiling, which anyone interested was welcome to attend. This live event was met with a great turnout and tremendous enthusiasm. Soon available to configure in Dewulf’s virtual showroom Dewulf is now accepting orders for the Enduro via their dealer network. The manufacturer will start series production of this 4-row self-propelled sieving harvester on tires next year. Starting in late November the Enduro will also be available to configure in the virtual showroom that the manufacturer will place online for a limited time. Dewulf has said they will soon release more information about this virtual environment via their social media channels.

Dewulf has fitted their renowned R3060 series sieving harvesters with several updates. Every new R3060 is now equipped with a brand new, more environmentally friendly Scania Stage V engine. To further optimize the engine performance, the engine compartment also got a new grille for improved heat management. In the cabin, the driver’s comfort has also been further improved, thanks to new HD monitors and cameras.

The most recent version of the R3060 is driven by a 350 or 400 hp Stage V Scania engine with an AdBlue system. With this more environmentally friendly engine, Dewulf reduces the emissions of soot, fine particulates, and nitrogen from their 2-row self-propelled sieving harvester. Naturally, this new engine is also fully compliant with the stricter European emission standards.

Looking at the engine compartment of the latest model of the R3060, you will see that an additional grille has been fitted. Thanks to this extra grille in the bodywork, the hot air produced by the engine can escape more easily. This should further increase the service life and performance.

Enjoyable harvesting is harvesting in full comfort. Therefore, the R3060 also got updated HD monitors and cameras. The new monitors have greatly improved image quality and the same smooth controls as before (touch + trigger switches).

The camera at the back of the machine and the one on top of the bunker discharge elevator are each fitted with a wide-angle lens. This provides the driver with an excellent view of the area behind the harvester when driving in reverse. It also means he has a more complete and sharper view when filling transport vehicles or boxes, which enables him to better judge when they are fully loaded.

For more than 20 years Grimme has been offering powerful and crop-protecting technology for storing potatoes, carrots, onions and other vegetables and has set the standard with electro-hydraulic drives. For the 2020 season, the RH-receiving hoppers series has been extensively revised and equipped with new practical features.

Perfectly prepared for all transport vehicles

A good seal between the transport vehicle and the receiving hopper minimizes the loss of harvested crop and improves the cleanliness and hygiene of the entire storage process. Since transport vehicles have different contours in practice, the sealing rubber intake flaps must be particularly flexible and quickly adaptable. Grimme has therefore completely revised the design and function of the receiving area to further improve the quick and safe “docking” of the transport vehicles.

The lower support strip, which enables easy rearward manoeuvring to the hopper, especially for transport vehicles with a deep underride guard, is able to move to the rear for improved material protection. Three rubber lips are fitted to the lateral bunker walls, each of them subdivided into three parts. In this way the rubber lips adapt to any vehicle contour. The rubber intake flaps are now ball-bearing mounted. They are height-adjustable without tools, so that it can be quickly and easily adapted to the different heights of transport vehicles. Losses while filling the receiving hopper can now be prevented even more effectively.

VarioFlow: High throughput and crop protection

The transition from the grading or cleaning rollers onto the cross conveyor is often the limiting factor of a receiving hopper, as the crop can only be fed onto the cross conveyor on one side. With the new VarioFlow, Grimme offers an optional available transfer device consisting of two PU spiral rollers with mechanically adjustable height. With this transfer device, more crop can be transferred more evenly to the crop cross conveyor, which significantly increases the conveying capacity. The transfer height of the two PU spiral rollers onto the cross conveyor can be infinitely adjusted by means of one spindle each on the left and right side of the machine. This adjustment enables the two PU spiral rollers to mesh together when adjusting between different discharge heights, ultimately this leads to increased crop protection. By having a minimum transfer height to the discharging cross conveyor on one side, maximum crop protection is achieved. On the lower side of the conveyor the passage is increased as the rollers are lifted out of the crop flow. At the same time the transfer height remains minimal because the crop is transferred onto other crop on the downstream-side of the conveyor. The result is a significant increase in throughput capacity, while maintaining a high level of crop protection.

Simplified maintenance for the hopper floor drive chain

The new lubricator offers a practical solution for oiling the hopper chain and therefore increases the durability to a maximum. Maintenance and care of the machine is considerably simplified for the operator, as manual lubrication of the hopper floor chain is no longer necessary.
