Nutrien announced that it expects to increase potash production by approximately half a million tonnes in the second half of 2021 compared to earlier expectations, in response to tightening global potash market conditions. Nutrien has a flexible network of six world-class potash mines with competitively positioned, available capacity that it can utilize to help supply global demand.

“We are responding to strong market fundamentals to ensure our customers have the crop inputs they need to feed a growing population. Our network of flexible production and extensive logistics is designed to provide reliable supply and we have a unique ability to be agile and respond to changing market conditions. Our potash asset portfolio is optimally positioned to meet customer needs and drive shareholder value,”

commented Ken Seitz, Nutrien’s Executive Vice President and CEO of Potash.

Domestic and offshore potash sales volumes are currently fully committed through September, based on our original production profile for 2021. Nutrien will be actively hiring additional employees and adapting its resources to help increase production across most of its potash mines, ramping up its Vanscoy facility in particular, and will ensure the highest safety standards are maintained in the process.

Nutrien expects these actions to result in upward revisions to potash-related guidance for the second half of 2021 from both a volume and EBITDA perspective, which will be addressed in second-quarter 2021 results. Nutrien continues to actively monitor the market and evaluate other potential options to further increase production if demand warrants it and may provide additional information in this regard at a later date.

This innovative technology allows workers to operate bulldozers safely from a few thousand feet away in an indoor control station, thereby physically removing them from potential risks.

Nutrien’s Aurora facility is the largest mining site to implement this non-line of sight remote-control system for D8 bulldozers.

“Upholding our core value of safety is a top priority, and the Cat Command for Dozing system helps to further enhance our safety processes. We’ve also experienced other benefits, such as a better environment for operators and improved productivity and reliability,”

said Mike Dirham, Vice President of Nutrien’s Phosphate Operations.

“We’re excited to continue using technology at our sites to improve our ability to reduce risks and reliably produce the phosphate products our customers need.”

In addition to keeping operators safe by getting them out of the dozers’ cabs, the system includes sophisticated software that monitors the grade of the terrain ahead and identifies avoidance zones.

Further, the system offers improved visibility with cameras that provide a 180-degree front, back and bird’s-eye view of the ground level conditions, along with lighting that reveals a greater field of vision for improved day and nighttime operation.

“Cat Command for Dozing remote control technologies enables users to run equipment from a remote location on or offsite, making work safer, more convenient and more comfortable,”

said Fred Rio, Worldwide Product Manager for Construction Digital & Technology, Caterpillar.

“Whether they choose the Cat Command console or station, users can have full control of the machine without exposing themselves to dust, noise, vibration or other hazards, which also results in increased productivity.”

Schmidt brings over 30 years of agricultural business experience to his leadership of Nutrien. He joined the Agrium board of directors in 2012 and has served as Chair of Nutrien’s Board of Directors since May 2019. He also held senior positions in other agricultural focussed companies such as ConAgra Grain, Canada and General Mills. He serves as a member of Washburn University’s Board of Trustees and Harvard’s Kennedy School’s Private and Public, Scientific, Academic and Consumer Food Policy Group and as a mentor for Catalyst Women on Board. I look forward to working with Mayo over the coming weeks to support a seamless transition and to my next adventure.”

With Magro’s resignation from the Board, the Board has determined to reduce the number of directors from 12 to 11. The 11 other directors identified in Nutrien’s management proxy circular dated March 29, 2021 will stand for election at the Annual Meeting of Shareholders scheduled for May 17, 2021.

Nutrien also launched six commitments to address the challenge of sustainably feeding a growing global population while protecting the planet. The Feeding the Future Plan has action pathways to help transform agriculture by the year 2030:

Enable growers to adopt sustainable and productive agricultural products and practices on 75 million acres globally

Launch and scale a comprehensive Carbon Program, empowering growers and the agriculture industry to accelerate climate-smart agriculture and soil carbon sequestration while rewarding growers for their efforts

Achieve at least a 30 percent reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Scope 1 + 2) per tonne of our products produced*

Invest in new technologies and pursue the transition to low-carbon fertilizers, including blue and green ammonia

Leverage our farm-focused technology partnerships and investments to drive positive impact in industry and grower innovation and inclusion

Create new financial solutions for growers to strengthen social, economic and environmental outcomes in agriculture

The world’s population is expected to reach 10 billion people by the year 2050, and innovation is needed to increase food production for generations to come. The Feeding the Future Plan reflects Nutrien’s commitment to drive systemic change by helping to scale sustainable and inclusive agriculture. It also includes Nutrien’s commitment to set science-based climate emissions targets through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Nutrien’s 2021 ESG Report is a valuable tool for investors and other stakeholders to review Nutrien’s key material ESG risks and opportunities.

Executive Commentary

Chuck Magro, President and CEO, Nutrien, said,

“Nutrien is focused on meeting the United Nations’ Zero Hunger Sustainable Development Goal in the coming decade by helping growers increase food production in a sustainable manner. Our 2030 commitments and ESG performance targets are ambitious, but necessary, which is why we are dedicated to working across our value chain on initiatives like our comprehensive Carbon Program to build a pathway forward that will help lead the next wave of agriculture’s evolution. This effort drives at the core of our strategy to feed more people, using less resources and with fewer emissions.”

“We know a collaborative effort is required to address climate change and feed the world. With a long-term goal to scale our programs and create real, lasting change, Nutrien is encouraging stakeholders to come together to evolve the systems and policies needed to address these challenges. As we strive to transform our food system, we encourage the sharing of information and pooling of resources for a new generation of systems-based solutions.”
