The transaction sees publicly-traded Cervus transition to 100% private ownership in an all-cash deal.

The landmark transaction creates Canada’s largest-ever equipment dealer network, adding 64 agriculture, transportation, and material handling equipment locations to Brandt’s existing John Deere Construction & Forestry dealerships across Canada. When fully integrated, it will give Cervus’ customers access to Brandt’s extensive national parts and technical support infrastructure.

The purchase further establishes the firm’s position as a premier privately held Canadian company and the largest John Deere dealership in the world.

“The addition of Cervus’ branch network is a big win for customers in all of the affected markets. We’ve got a lot to offer and we’re ready to roll up our sleeves and earn the loyalty of our new customers through a combination of premium products and services and a consistent, high-quality customer support experience.”

says Brandt owner and CEO, Shaun Semple.

The Cervus Equipment John Deere facility in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

The deal gives Brandt unparalleled market penetration, expanding their geographical footprint and enabling the company to add, in select markets, John Deere agricultural equipment; Peterbilt transportation equipment; and Clark, Sellick, JLG, Baumann and other material handling equipment in addition to their already-impressive list of products and services.

With the acquisition of the Cervus locations in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Brandt now owns and operates 120 full-service equipment dealerships with an additional 50+ service points and employs over 5100 people.

As operations are integrated, staffing in these locations is expected to increase by up to 40% with significant new facility construction across the entire network.

The supply chain investment boosts Volvo’s commitment to being the number one uptime provider for construction equipment in North America.

Volvo Construction Equipment has completed a 75,000-square-foot expansion of its Reno, Nevada, regional parts distribution center. The project, in conjunction with Volvo Group Service Market Logistics, increases floor space by 125% and brings parts closer to construction equipment customers with faster delivery times and reduced shipping costs. Volvo Group has operated the Reno Distribution Center since 2006, supporting the Volvo Trucks and Mack Trucks brands.

Globally, North America is one of the largest markets for Volvo CE. Over 20% of the region’s total business comes from the western third of the United States.

With the expansion, ground orders for California and the Pacific Northwest are now arriving two days faster compared to shipping from the Volvo Group’s central distribution center in Byhalia, Mississippi. A new Dedicated Delivery Service (DDS) now operates out of Reno as an exclusive carrier to expedite overnight shipments to western U.S. dealers, arriving at dealer branches by as early as 4 a.m. the next day.

The regional distribution center offers additional benefits including:

Inventory of critical machine down parts on the shelf in Reno for overnight shipping;

Parts order cut-off time extended to 4 p.m. PST; and

Cost savings to customers, since more deliveries, can ship ground versus air

Delivering the service commitment

“By pooling the resources of the Volvo Group, these improvements to our North American logistics network increase efficiency and provide faster response times. Our commitment is to ensure we support machine uptime for our West Coast customers, and moving parts closer to where they do business is one of the major steps,”

said Stephen Roy, president of Region North America, Volvo CE.

Many western U.S. dealers are challenged to support customers spread across a vast territory. Planting a stand-alone parts center in their region has a significant impact, says Tom Zimmer, president of Tri-State Truck & Equipment.

“The Reno parts center has cut our lead times by 40-50% for construction equipment stock orders. As a Volvo Trucks and Mack Trucks dealer, we have seen the faster delivery times gained by having an aftermarket parts warehouse in our region. Now, we can offer the same level of uptime support to construction customers,”

said Zimmer, whose dealership services customers in Montana, Wyoming, and the Nebraska panhandle.

While the expansion directly impacts customers in the western U.S., customers, and dealers across the country are benefitting from rebalanced parts volumes throughout the supply chain. Volvo CE ended 2020 with record parts availability and dealer fill rates, despite constraints caused by the pandemic and increased demand on freight carrier services. These results demonstrate how Volvo CE continually lives and enhances its Service Commitment.

Volvo Group efficiencies

“Through substantial investments, we expanded our Reno facility and refined workflows to extend this strong level of service and support to another Volvo Group brand, Volvo Construction Equipment,”

said Bob Hochwarth, Vice President, Volvo Group Service Market Logistics for North America.

To support higher volumes and maintain agility, additional employees were hired and an onsite training center was created. New collaboration spaces and a central command center for team leads to improve communication flow.

“The employees at this site have proven their abilities through sustaining top-tier quality and productivity — attributes that make a meaningful impact for dealers and customers across the Volvo Group,”

said Hochwarth.

The Reno Distribution Center has been consistently ranked as one of the highest-performing warehouses in the North American automotive sector by third-party benchmarking studies.

The expansion follows the opening of the Toronto Distribution Center in 2019. The Volvo Group parts distribution network spans eight locations in the U.S. and Canada

The expansion increases production capacity and hiring by year-end

Doosan Bobcat is celebrating the completion of a $26 million expansion at its manufacturing facility in Litchfield, Minnesota. The 15-month project nearly tripled the size of the facility, from 70,000 square feet of office and manufacturing space to nearly 200,000 square feet, and will create a significant number of new jobs in the community.

The expansion adds new assembly lines and upgrades, conveyor systems, a new paint line, climate control systems, and more, all designed to add efficiency and provide additional manufacturing capabilities to meet the growing customer demand for the ever-expanding lineup of Bobcat products.

The Litchfield facility produces more than 250 unique attachments to equip Bobcat machines for specific tasks to enhance productivity and utility.

“This investment is about meeting the growing demand for Bobcat products from our customers and dealers, and I am incredibly proud of this project and our Litchfield team. We are pleased to expand our manufacturing footprint and continue to support our expanding product line and customer base,”

said Mike Ballweber, president of Doosan Bobcat North America.

The expansion brings additional employment opportunities and economic growth to the area. Doosan Bobcat is actively recruiting to hire an additional 110 full-time, permanent employees with benefits in a phased approach through 2021 to join the operation’s current 140+ workforce.

This hiring plan includes a total of 150+ production, manufacturing engineering, and operations positions to be added since the expansion project launched in Nov. 2019. Production jobs currently being added at the Litchfield facility include fabricator, assembler, welder, and material handler positions – all of which offer initial and ongoing training, competitive and comprehensive benefits package and the opportunity for career advancement and leadership roles.

BlockApps announced the launch of the TraceHarvest Network which is transforming the way agricultural products are managed.

The new blockchain-powered business network was developed in collaboration with Bayer, which served as a founding member and active user of the network for live, customer-facing operations over the past two years in regions including the United States and Brazil, with further plans to expand globally.

With the support of Bayer, this flexible, scalable, and global platform will help farmers of all sizes access new markets and services, increasing their livelihoods through the ability to offer new premium products. Through access to improved supply chain information, this platform also enables farmers to optimize their own operations. TraceHarvest has the potential to be leveraged for other impactful use cases such as carbon offset crediting to food safety recalls, promoting both sustainability and consumer well-being. Through this platform, information across the lifecycle of agricultural products can provide insights to drive and reward sustainable practices throughout the food supply chain.

The BlockApps TraceHarvest Network is the first blockchain solution of its kind to track and trace the full lifecycle of agricultural products starting at the seed source. For products like seeds, this provides a full picture of stewardship as they are sold, exchanged, planted, harvested, and processed. In collaboration with the Crop Science Division at Bayer, the platform has been built and tested to the highest industry standard for traceability and provides a first and best-in-class solution for the grain industry. Farmers, manufacturers, distributors, and processors can selectively share and review data within a single, secure platform, making activities available to the entire chain. This streamlined engagement and real-time information exchange allow all parties to identify and address product tracking and integrity issues faster than previous manual processes allowed.

“Blockchain technology is already revolutionizing the agriculture industry, and we’re leading the way thanks to our partnership with the Crop Science Division at Bayer which has turned this concept from idea into reality. Together, we’re developing world-class innovation with farmers, setting new standards in sustainability, and driving digital transformation that will shape the future of the industry.”

said Kieren James-Lubin, President and CEO at BlockApps.

Current analog processes create significant costs in labor and resources and fail to deliver the data that farmers and other value chain participants need. Such inefficiencies also put businesses at risk of compliance violations across the supply chain and in multiple geographies. TraceHarvest brings agricultural products to market faster, helps safely launch new products in approved regions, and traces them accurately to provide strong proof of compliance with international regulations.

Bayer used TraceHarvest over the course of several growing seasons to track the lifecycle and status of the company’s highest-value agricultural products, including soybeans and corn, from the sale and planting through harvest.

Member farmers, manufacturers, distributors, and processors use the same TraceHarvest network to track where their products are going, providing them with full visibility into the source of their crops.

“By enabling the traceability of products throughout the food supply chain, TraceHarvest will provide a basis for new solutions and services around the food quality and transparency questions that are top-of-mind for farmers and consumers,”

said Sascha Israel, Bayer Crop Science CIO and Head of Digital Transformation.

“The TraceHarvest platform will enable our traditional and non-traditional business partners throughout the food value chain to explore new products, services, and business models. Trusting in the stewardship of agricultural products is essential to navigating the complex ecosystem of modern farming. Using TraceHarvest in production has allowed us to drive operational efficiencies, create value, and have greater visibility, transparency, and compliance throughout the entire food supply and value chain.”

said Michael Pareles, Digital Strategy and Growth Lead at Bayer Crop Science.

The TraceHarvest Network runs on BlockApps’ cloud-agnostic STRATO platform, a flexible, enterprise-grade, Ethereum-based blockchain solution for building and running business networks with built-in security. This shared infrastructure incentivizes greater cooperation and collaboration between businesses and farmers.

“TraceHarvest is highly scalable, which is crucially important because it allows members to add more business processes, use cases, and tech integrations into the very same network. For example, network members will be able to collaborate with downstream food producers to extend tracking of agricultural products even further down the value chain and ultimately verify claims made about their ingredients and sustainability practices.”

Kieren James-Lubin continues.

Dan Maternach, the Founder and President of Perfect Fit Presentations, LLC, writes a new blog post about trend topics in agriculture. Here is the full-text.

The newest ag megatrend unfolding is e-commerce; particularly in the crop input sector. This year, concern about contracting (or spreading) COVID19 has only accelerated promotion, interest, and use of e-commerce for purchasing among farmers. In a September 2020 report, Purdue’s Dr. Scott Downey, Director, and Professor; Dr. Michael Boehlje, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, and Dr. Luciano Thome e Castro, International Adjunct Professor, found three distinct categories among ag e-commerce platforms:

Retailer-to-farmer online only (no physical presence),

Manufacturer-to-farmer direct online sales, and

The retailer-farmer omnichannel experience (both online and physical presences).

The 1998 trailblazer was XSAg.com; now FarmTrade.com. There were no brick-and-mortar facilities or inventory involved. Founder Fulton Breen of XSInc. described their XSAg.com division as

“a secure trading platform to facilitate transactions between buyers and sellers of herbicides, pesticides, and other inputs at discounts averaging about 20%.”

Then, in 2013, he decided to focus on XSInc’s data analytics services and divest itself of the XSAg platform. To his great satisfaction, the buyer was one of his long-time employees, Jeff Stow, who renamed the business FarmTrade.com to avoid confusion with Breen’s XSInc ag analytics business.

“We are still a family business,”

says Stow,

“and we’ve only enhanced the name-your-price approach for buyers with our unique ‘Dutch auction’ approach. Instead of sellers offering prices they’ll take; on our site, buyers offer prices they’ll pay. They wait until a seller meets their offer and we make a small commission; simple as that.” Stow adds, “We even hold the buyer’s money in escrow until they take delivery; eliminating that element of risk for all of us involved.”

Farmers Business Network (FBN) launched in 2014, with a former Google exec at the helm, and attracted $571 million in the capital. They are seen by some as a threat to disrupt ag retailing the way Amazon.com has turned malls into ghost towns. Brick-and-mortar ag retailers feel pressured to adopt the “if you can’t lick ’em, join ’em” response to the impending migration to e-commerce on their own websites. Alas, many are finding there’s little or no margin left for them when farmers are finding input costs at or below what manufacturers are charging the ag retailers as “middlemen”!

Between XSAg.com (now FarmTrade.com) and FBN, other e-merchants have emerged. In fact, Farm Journal magazine began surveying farmers with at least 500 acres of corn on their use of e-commerce sites in 2018. The most recent data is from the 2019 survey compiled last November. Farm Journal’s Margy Eckelkamp cited three key take-aways:

Farmers’ purchase intentions tend to exceed what they actually do online.

Their experience drives their online purchase decisions, with the price the number one factor, followed by the availability of products, ease of the purchasing process, the delivery process, and consulting available for specific questions.

Online purchases vary by input category. The highest interest is for crop chemicals (63% in 2019 with indications this would jump to 75% for 2020); followed by seed (42%); then fertilizer (19%).

When Farm Journal asked farmers to list online retailers they use, 14 different e-commerce sites were mentioned among nearly 400 respondents from 36 states and are shown below:

Most noteworthy to me is that despite its enormous capital infusions, relentless promotion, and offering the entire array of ag input products, FBN is still only slightly higher in the percentage of farmers using it than FarmTrade.com, which specializes in crop protection inputs only.

FarmTrade’s Stow says

“When we purchased the XSAg business in 2013, we were excited about our new direction and value proposition but didn’t expect the success we’ve had since our very first year.”

When asked to explain why Stow says

“it’s a combination of earning intense customer loyalty, the word-of-mouth referrals we get from them, and attracting channel members (vendors) with the hottest input products.”

That 2019 Farm Journal farmer survey also reported the most important factors farmers consider in choosing e-commerce over their regular ag retailer here:

Stow says those top influences in Fig. 2 are right in line with their own experience at FarmTrade and have guided their own site development. I’ve also learned consultants to traditional brick-and-mortar retailers feeling threatened by e-commerce are telling them not to count on the “personal, face-to-face relationship with their salespeople” to immunize them from the lure of e-commerce competitors. Why? Among Gen X, Gen Z and Millennial generations of farmers, brand and dealer loyalty are a distant second to saving time and money.

Some consulting firms are even advising ag retailers to do a careful cost analysis for the extra services they “bundle” with their input sales to “justify” prices for inputs to the farmer. One put the reasoning starkly and bluntly:

“I tell them that if they couldn’t charge for those perks and services a la carte on an invoice, they ought to stop offering them, save the cost, and trim their input prices instead to compete with these aggressive, penny-pinching e-commerce platforms.”

The consensus among those focused on the future of ag retailing says it will always demand price competitiveness for crop inputs. They add it will create the opportunity to charge for actionable analytics using the farmer’s precision ag data as a separate profit center. Others I monitor predict the next megatrend driving such analytics will be the incorporation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the farmer’s precision ag data. It will churn out the most profitable prescription on a field-by-field basis in a matter of minutes. But that’s grist for another article on another day!

Aceinna & PointOne partner to create the industry’s most affordable, highly accurate (1 centimeter), and easy to use positioning solution for autonomous vehicles

Aceinna announced a partnership with Point One Navigation, a leader delivering precise positioning for the next generation of transportation. The strategic partnership enables a streamlined positioning platform that combines Point One’s Polaris GNSS cloud correction service with Aceinna’s OpenRTK330 hardware and software solution for developers in agriculture, construction, mapping, surveying, robotics, and trucking.

The GNSS correction service market shows great promise yet is presently hampered by some lingering problems. These include the nuisance of managing separate commercial/support relationships for hardware and subscriptions, difficulty integrating solutions between such providers, lack of consistency in resulting accuracy compared with what is advertised, resistance to supporting all application sizes from single unit to high volume, the absence of a coast-to-coast network from a single provider, and stubbornly high pricing for the service in general.

Aceinna and Point One are solving these problems by delivering the most reliable, turn-key, and affordable GNSS correction solution on the market. Customers will be able to purchase the fully integrated hardware and streaming service directly from Aceinna and its distribution partners versus seeking out a provider on their own. Activation and authentication will be streamlined thanks to extensive backend server synchronization between Aceinna and Point One. True centimeter-level accuracy will be attainable and powered by the integration of Point One’s coast-to-coast Polaris network and Aceinna’s OpenRTK platform. Finally, aggressive pricing will be offered to support all deployment levels, from a single unit and up to a large scale. The combined offering will be available for purchase beginning in December 2020.

“This partnership between Aceinna and Point One harnesses and combines each of our distinct strengths, to offer a solution platform that makes high-performance positioning accessible to a variety of industries and applications. We are thrilled to work with Point One’s technical expertise and execution to advance this technology to the next level of precision,”

said Dr. Yang Zhao, Chairman, and CEO of Aceinna.

“Point One’s Polaris is a highly adaptable network that provides critical data for a myriad of precise positioning and autonomous applications. We are excited to be working with an industry leader such as Aceinna and the use of OpenRTK330 satisfies a market need for precise yet affordable corrections-based guidance and navigation systems.”

said Aaron Nathan, CEO, and Co-Founder at Point One.

OpenRTK330 is a state-of-the-art, high-performance GNSS receiver with a built-in RTK engine and triple-redundant inertial sensors. It is designed for use in Level 3 ADAS and other high-volume applications requiring precise position information. It includes a multi-band RTK/GNSS receiver coupled with redundant inertial sensor arrays to provide cm-level accuracy, enhanced reliability, and superior performance during GNSS outages. The dead reckoning solution delivers a strong performance in GNSS challenged urban environments. OpenRTK300 is supported by Aceinna’s open-source toolchain which enables direct customization of the on-board algorithms, I/O, and communication stack on the device

Point One’s Polaris network is a proprietary GNSS correction network built from the ground up for the needs of modern automotive and robotics customers. Polaris uses the latest in base station technology including advanced anti-jam, interference mitigation, security, and integrity monitoring. Its powerful cloud-based correction architecture allows for GNSS corrections in RTK or SSR configuration. Its open-source interfaces demonstrate compatibility with receivers and chipsets from leading providers. The service is also compatible with any NTRIP/RTCM3 compliant receiver.

Smiley Monroe, a conveyor belt and rubber parts manufacturer, opened its first U.S. production center in Franklin, Kentucky, in response to demand from its growing customer base in the region.

The Northern Ireland-based manufacturer has been producing two of the brand’s core products – hot vulcanized Endless conveyor belts and Zip Clip replacement belts – in its new 65,000-sq.-ft. facility since April.

The company’s U.S. operation is headed by plant manager Morgan Walker, who has held a number of leadership roles since joining the family-owned business as a site service team leader. Ryan Wright, who serves as international sales manager, remains responsible for North American sales and business development.

“Manufacturing in America, for America was a natural strategic move, and having a base in Kentucky means we can offer just-in time delivery to our American customers,” says Chris Monroe, president of Smiley Monroe Inc.

Marketing director Tim Monroe says the company is focused on manufacturing its Zip Clip replacement belts as a result of listening to its U.S. customers talk about the problem of machine downtime and the amount of time and money wasted waiting for service crews and spare belts to arrive on-site. According to Tim Monroe, the belts made at the new Kentucky facility make it easy to maximize conveyor uptime, increase efficiencies and reduce running costs.

“In Zip Clip, Smiley Monroe is bringing fresh thinking and something genuinely new to the American market, while being well-placed to satisfy volume demand for high quality and competitively priced chevron conveyor belting which is often in short supply in the American market,” Chris Monroe says.

Co-founded 40 years ago by Vaughan Monroe to provide conveyor belts and a vulcanizing service to local quarries and mines, Smiley Monroe now exports to more than 60 countries worldwide, across 10 equipment sectors – ranging from quarrying, construction and demolition and environmental to agricultural, recycling and waste management and road construction.

Trimble Continues to Increase its Footprint to Deliver High-Accuracy Positioning Correction Services

Trimble acquired MidStates VRS, a network previously owned by Butler Machinery and Frontier Precision, in September 2020. The addition of the network, located in North and South Dakota, increases the footprint of Trimble’s Virtual Reference Station (VRS) GNSS real-time correction services. Adding 105,000 square miles of coverage, the acquisition expands Trimble’s VRS Now network to be one of the largest in North America—over 1 million square miles. Current customers will have a seamless experience during the ownership transition, and will now receive corrections that are backed by Trimble’s 24/7 advanced network management and customer care teams.

When using the Trimble VRS Now service, land and construction surveyors, GIS professionals, and farmers — with a Trimble or third-party commercial GNSS receiver — can leverage instant high-accuracy corrections delivered via cellular network to improve productivity. Enabling users to work without the hassle of setting up and maintaining a single GNSS base station, the service is cost-effective, simple to use, and ideal for a variety of geospatial, construction, and farming applications that require inch level vertical and sub-inch horizontal accuracy, an important component of the connected construction site and connected farm workflows.

The Benefits

Hardware Costs:

50% savings over conventional RTK as VRS only requires a rover receiver and cellular/IP connectivity. No base station investment or maintenance costs.

The efficiency of Deployment:

Multiple crews can be deployed at one time and work simultaneously.

Productivity Improvements:

Begin working immediately.

No need to investigate base station sites.

Simply Connect – Correct – Measure. It’s that easy!
