Ktwo designs their muck spreaders with twin floor chains to ensure increased longevity, exceptional reliability, and a better spread of product along with many additional benefits over a single chain design.

The floor chains in muck spreaders convey the material towards the rotors and require a constant and even feed to ensure all the load is spread accurately. All leading manufactures now use heavy-duty, mining conveyor chain systems which are far superior to the early lightweight, flat link agricultural chain systems of the past.

Traditionally the market saw larger “trailer type” 2m wide muck spreaders designed using single floor chain systems, but when a large amount of material was tipped into them it did not support the floor well and it would bow and eventually stove in, impinging the conveyor system. The twin floor chain system naturally gives a more robust floor slat, but permits support to the center of the spreader floor.

Ktwo muck spreaders have a flared body throughout which gives an increased volume capacity but also allows a stronger floor design. By starting to taper from the floor, the innovative design acts as a funnel to help move materials down to the chains increasing volume and allowing for easier emptying with less bridging. Even with the central gap between the two chain systems, the nature of the manure itself ensures complete emptying of the spreader.

Ashley Knibb, Ktwo Senior Design Engineer explains:

“A single chain is a simple system that allows for easier slat bending and requires a bigger and more clumsy chain to achieve the required pulling capacity. And suffers from inherently more chain wear on the gearbox drive side”,

As observed over the years by Stewart Freeman Ktwo Service and Parts Manager.

“Spreading the load” across a twin system with four chains and two runs of slats means it is not imposing such a big load onto the slats, a smaller more compact chain can be used and the floor is supported better.

With the exception of the Ktwo Bio which has more slats to give a very accurate rotor feed, Ktwo models have staggered chains to further help feed the rotors and ensure an even output and accurate coverage of the looser, lighter product, which is especially noticeable when spreading high-value materials such as lime with the use of the slurry door to meter the load.

Ktwo muck spreaders include a sprocketed front roller with integral cleaning scrapers. This gives positive engagement with the chain ensuring the chains remain timed and aligned, with a consistent flow of material and preventing the chain derailing should a foreign object get into the drive roller, thus every slat bending if one should fail.

Another consideration is the difference between the use of a bearing or composite bush. Ktwo has always fitted high-quality ball flange bearings which are self-aligning allowing accurate individual chain tension and high-pressure bearings which are much more resilient to wear out. The composite bush produces resistance with its thin wall and its friction contact when under heavy load, unlike the ball flange bearing which eliminates this.

Robbie Polson, Ktwo Managing Director, says

“We have had great feedback from customers moving from a single slat spreader to our twin floor chain spreaders. Not only does it help spread the load better it allows for easy maintenance.’’

“A single slat system has a no-tool change design. These are a loose fit and then wear and become covered in the product and corrode. This system also eventually corrodes solid. We often have customers comment on our four chain design, on its ease to maintain because they can get their tools in and around it and it is simple to remove bolts and slats no matter how worn and embedded they get.’’

Ktwo continues to stay ahead of the curve with its innovative and high-quality machines that are designed to perform and built to last. The extensive Ktwo muck spreader range includes vertical and horizontal beaters all designed to give maximum output with consistent and accurate spreading.

Penetrometer readings show how tractor and planter tires compact the soil.

AGCO Corporation has released the first 2020 Crop Tour field update.

Soil compacted at planting can reduce yields by restricting root growth and reducing nutrient and water availability. Soil compaction caused by wheel traffic has become an increasing concern among farmers, especially due to the weight of high-capacity, central-fill planters on the center transport wheels. Demonstrating just how much compaction can occur, how it impacts yield, and how to minimize compaction at planting are goals of the AGCO Crop Tour program in 2020.

AGCO agronomists will be observing crop development and measuring yield at Fendt Momentum Crop Tour plots throughout the Corn Belt this summer. In one of their first observations, the agronomists used a soil penetrometer to measure compaction caused by the tractor/planter compared to compaction in areas where the planter did not run (see Figure 1). Penetrometers measure resistance in pounds per square inch as the device is slowly pushed into the ground, simulating a root penetrating soil. The more resistance to the penetrometer, the harder it will be for roots to grow and penetrate the soil. Readings were collected in five locations in Illinois, Ohio, and South Dakota.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="widget-image" title="Figure 1. Soil penetrometers provide an indication of soil compaction by measuring the resistance of the soil to the probe in pounds per square inch as the probe is slowly pushed into the ground.

The plots were planted with a Fendt Momentum planter equipped with the Load Logic system to distribute the weight of the planter, seed, and liquid fertilizer across all the planter’s tires to lessen the load on the center transport wheels and reduce compaction near the center rows. The planter’s in-line tandem center transport wheels were equipped with very-high flexion tires and an auto tire inflation system that constantly adjusts tire PSI, depending on planter weight to minimize pressure on the soil.

The chart shows that the planter added little to no extra compaction to that caused by the tractor tires. Many studies have shown that the first pass of equipment, such as the planter tractor, produces most of the soil compaction that occurs.

“These initial results support our goal of not causing added compaction with the planter in order to give corn and soybean plants their best shot at optimum yields,”

says Jason Lee, AGCO agronomist and farm solutions specialist.

“We will be taking plant measurements and hand-harvest estimates as the season progresses, along with harvest yield results this fall, to tell the full story.”

Past research verifies yield loss due to compaction at planting

Yield losses from compaction created at planting due to interrow wheel traffic from the tractor and planter can be substantial. In 2011, Pioneer on-farm trials determined average corn yields of rows planted by the outside wing sections of the planter were significantly greater than yields from the rows planted by the center planter segment in nine of 12 locations. In fact, the rows planted by the outside wing segments yielded an average of 11.3 bu/ac more than rows planted by the center section of the planter, due to interrow wheel traffic from the tractor and planter.

After years of research and hours of technical analysis, Magna Tyres managed to launch its first ever “3 star” rigid dump truck tyre. The 24.00R35 has been added to the Magna MA04+ line-up and will be available in the 3*** version in addition to the already existing ** version. The potential of this latest acquisition is tremendous and will be the first step in the upgraded generation Magna RDT tyres.

Courtesy of magnatyres.com

Since its introduction, the Magna MA04+ has provided many dump trucks worldwide with top-class performances and moved countless loads of raw materials. The proven tread pattern turned out to be a great basis for the further development of the upgraded MA04+ range.

The next level Magna MA04+ ensures customers a stronger tyre, with more rubber in the contact patch, better and additional steel liner which will result in an increased load capacity. It allows mining operators to increase their productivity and continuity of their earthmoving operations.

Converted into practical terms, this upgrade equals a 8% higher payload or an increase of 9.000 kilo’s in load capacity per dump truck. Translated to the number of cycles made daily; a huge increase in productivity!

The first production of this tyre will be completed in July 2020. Initially produced in the 24.00R35 size but preparations have already been made to bring the other RDT sizes of the MA04+ in the 3*** rating on the market in the near future.

Haul Assist, powered by the Volvo Co-Pilot display, provides real-time load information so operators hit their targets every time.

Volvo Construction Equipment continues to add to its portfolio of productivity services with the North American launch of Haul Assist, a system that shows how much material an articulated hauler has moved, providing operators data and real-time insights to help achieve optimal payloads and improve productivity. Haul Assist comes standard on Volvo’s A35G through A60H haulers and is optional on the A25G and A30G models.

Haul Assist, powered by the Volvo Co-Pilot display, provides real-time load information so operators hit their targets every time. Courtesy of www.volvogroup.com

“Accuracy of a hauler’s load is critical,” said Robert Palermo, product manager, articulated haulers, at Volvo Construction Equipment. “If it’s underloaded, operations are losing money on extra trips, fuel consumption and more. Overloaded trucks present safety issues, number one, but also put unnecessary wear on the truck. The more accurate the load, the lower cost per ton operations can realize.”

The value of real-time, On-Board Weighing

Haul Assist is fully integrated with Volvo’s On-Board Weighing system, which measures payload and was developed to increase the efficiency of hauling operations by helping ensure every Volvo hauler moves the optimal payload. It offers superb accuracy, eliminating underloading for peak productivity and overloading for reduced fuel consumption and wear. Operators are able to monitor all relevant information through the easy-to-use, in-cab Volvo Co-Pilot (10-inch) touch screen.

The On-Board Weighing feature in Haul Assist provides the operator with multiple tools to monitor production and productivity of the machine. The feature can be used in either Project mode or Trip Meter mode:

Project mode allows the operator to set up projects, add dump zones and material types, and provide targets. This makes it easier for the operator to monitor production and report progress to the office.

Trip Meter mode provides the operator with a payload counter (which can be reset), a cycle counter, plus other valuable payload information.

Operators are able to monitor all relevant information through the easy-to-use, in-cab Volvo Co-Pilot (10-inch) touch screen. Courtesy of www.volvogroup.com

In-cab productivity dashboard

A productivity view gives the operator an overview of the current machine productivity status — including tons per hour, tons per gallon or liter, carry-back and payload utilization — all of which can be monitored at any time. The operator can decide which data to display on the screen, depending on what’s considered most relevant. For each item, a target can be added so the operator can monitor the progress in relation to expectations.

Simple and easy-to-read reports for enhanced productivity

Haul Assist data is easily sent to the office via a productivity report, allowing for quicker decisions based on the latest information. The report provides productivity and efficiency information about the machine for a given time period, or it can generate a report that specifies — by cycle — information for a given time period. Operations can schedule reports to be generated automatically at set intervals or create them manually at any time. The data can be stored in the cloud and accessed remotely, or it can be exported using a USB for complete hauling management.
