A few days after the end of the world event dedicated to the agricultural robotics industry, it’s time to take stock: more than 1,500 participants from over 50 countries and online to discover some thirty autonomous machines.

The sixth edition of the event was packed with announcements, including the presentation of new models of agricultural robots, the launch of the “AgRobotics Land” territorial brand, two awards for agricultural robotics young companies and start-ups, and two save-the-dates: the official launch of FIRA USA 2022 in October and World FIRA 2022 in December.

New models of agricultural robots at World FIRA 2021

The World FIRA is now a reference event for the announcement of new robot models by manufacturers. Thus, the company Naïo Technologies presented its brand new robot model: Orio. Intended for field crops, Orio’s main functions are seeding and hoeing.

For its part, the Danish manufacturer Agrointelli unveiled its new model Robotti LR – Long Range. Its greater autonomy and its unique engine, which uses space in the modules, for a diesel tank with a capacity of 330 liters, allow the robot to operate up to 60 hours without stopping before refueling.

As for Exxact Robotics, the French company presented its compact single-row straddle robot, Traxx, while the Rennes-based start-up Tibot Technologie presented the T-MOOV, a poultry robot with a redesigned design to meet the needs expressed by its network of more than 200 breeders who already use the Spoutnic robot.

This year, two awards were held during World FIRA.

First, the second edition of the Best Field Robot Concept 2021 (BFRC), co-organized by FIRA and Future Farming magazine announced the following winners:

Category « Specialised » : Bale Hawk de Vermeer,

Category « Multipurpose »: Roboter de Horsch,

Category « Harvesting » : Eve de Ripe Robotics.

A jury of international experts selected their concepts from among the most promising robot concepts that have been covered on www.futurefarming.com in the past 12 months and those that responded to a call from FIRA and Future Farming.

At the Best Innovative Ag Robotics Startup 2021 Award, E-Terry was awarded the top prize.
The German startup was awarded for its technology, business model, market potential, and
team, among 11 startups that pitched to investors on December 7 during the World FIRA.

The new « AgRobotics Land » brand says “Bonjour” to Agricultural Robots The World FIRA 2021 was also an opportunity to present the new “AgRobotics Land” territorial brand. Inaugurated on December 7, AgRobotics Land embodies the dynamics of southeast Toulouse and its region, a center of gravity for agricultural robotics open to the French and international ecosystem. A mapping of the expertise offered by the region was presented on a dedicated stand.

About thirty agricultural robot demos

So many automated functionalities are present at World FIRA 2021. A series of workshops also provided an opportunity to take stock of the various autonomous solutions available to producers.

Livestock farming was well represented with Lely and its startups Datamole, Ilmens and
Cynomis, as well as poultry robots from Tibot and Octopus Biosafety. A workshop dedicated to harvesting and picking solutions was also a hit, with the new broccoli picking robot from Agrointelli, or the presentation of robots from Advanced. farm and Harvest CROO Robotics.

Lely announces the launch of its Lely Quaress Omnia teat spray as part of the Lely aftermarket consumables line. This U.S.-only product is an affordable teat spray that is designed for teat disinfection, protection, and conditioning. Lely Quaress Omnia is a non-iodine concentrate that can be used in all milking systems. When utilized with the Lely Astronaut A5 robotic milking system, it is applied as a post-milking teat spray.

“Dairy producers benefit from the Lely Quaress Omnia teat spray because of its fast kill of mastitis-causing pathogens and blend of emollients for teat skin protection. Because this product is a concentrate, it is a more economical option as far as cost per gallon and ultimately means less waste,”

said Steve Kraft, Aftermarket Field Support Manager, Lely.

Lely Quaress Omnia has proven to have high microbiocidal efficacy for improved udder health. The formula features a swift kill of 99.999% of mastitis-causing pathogens, including S. aureus, E. coli, Pseudomonas, S. dysgalactiae, S. agalactiae, S. uberis, K. pneumoniae, and E. aerogenes. Unlike teat care products that contain iodine or chlorhexidine, Lely Quaress Omnia has no potential for adverse chemicals to become residuals in milk. This solution delivers a 15-second kill of wild strains of S. aureus that is three times faster than competitive iodine treatments.

Lely Quaress Omnia’s 8% conditioning blend of emollients is comprised of organic acids, including pelargonic acid, lactic acid, and dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DDBSA). The natural components of this formula condition, exfoliate, hydrate, and protect the udder for smooth, soft skin and overall improved cow welfare.

With its unique combination of active ingredients and emollients, Lely Quaress Omnia is designed to improve cows’ udder health, which ultimately contributes to increased profitability for dairy producers’ businesses.

On behalf of Lely, the University of Milan conducted a study into the feed quality and heating of blocks of corn silage in a feed kitchen. During the days in which the study was carried out, the temperature was more than 30 ºC. However, the temperature of the corn blocks rose by only 2 ºC.

The study was carried out on three farms in Italy equipped with Lely Vector systems. The blocks were cut from the silage with a silage cutter and placed in the feed kitchen. Three blocks per kitchen were then fitted with temperature sensors. Temperature and humidity sensors were also installed in the feed kitchens and outside, which created a clear picture of the influence of the outside temperature on the heating of the corn blocks.

In order to scientifically assess the quality of the feed, an independent laboratory-measured sample of the silage blocks using Flieg’s score. The quality of new samples was measured in the same way after three days and after seven days.

Results

The temperature of the corn blocks only rose by 2 ºC in three days, even though the average outside temperature was more than 30 ºC. Flieg’s score showed no change, even after seven days. This means accurate ensilaged roughage can be stored in blocks in a feed kitchen for several days without losing quality, even in hot weather.

Lely introduces a new farm management application, called Lely Horizon. The new application is the next step towards a bright future in dairy automation, connecting data from all relevant equipment and suppliers on the farm in one management system. Horizon is a real decision-support platform, which analyses data, offers insights, and gives proactive advice to make the farmer’s life easier, the herd healthier, and the farm more profitable.

The new application, which will replace the current Lely T4C management system, was introduced during the Lely Future Farm Days 2020. Freddie Ruijs, Senior Product Manager Management Systems & Data at Lely, explains:

‘In an ever-changing world where ‘data’ and ‘digitalization’ are key, the dairy farm cannot be left behind. At Lely we feel that it is time to use all available relevant data in an intelligent way. That is exactly what Horizon is all about. It connects equipment and suppliers on the farm, using smart algorithms and the power of the cloud. Data is processed into actionable information that is always accessible on any device in a user-friendly way. The application provides farmers with the tools to work more efficiently and offers them more control, to help them achieve their goals.’

The application was created with the help of more than 100 test farmers in 7 countries, over a 24-month period. It involved the collaboration of more than 75 engineers, designers, farm management advisors, veterinarians, and AI specialists, in order to make the concept smarter and more user-friendly.

Decision support

Lely Horizon uses smart algorithms based on the experience of thousands of dairy farmers worldwide. The application elevates the data to forecast performances and offers the farmer clear choices. For instance, it clearly indicates ketosis-suspected cows at an early stage. Knowing that dairy cows suffer from ketosis, the early treatment directly prevents losses. Horizon also provides fact-based decision support on whether to inseminate or not.

Optimized farm flow

Lely Horizon makes farmers’ working days more efficient by unburdening them from routine decision-making. It optimizes their workflow by offering valuable insights at the right time and in the right place. Integrated routines based on easily scheduled cow touches create logical and more efficient workflows. Farmers can start task-based working with direct access to daily routines and necessary actions in order to customize their preferred way of working. It is even possible to assign a certain task to an employee and to schedule a time slot for the cow touch, rather than analyzing different reports and filtering long lists.

Connecting and combining

Horizon is not a platform for Lely solutions alone. It is open to partners and to the farmers’ partners too. It connects and combines all the available data in a complete solution for the farmer. This means that entering the same data in two separate systems will become a thing of the past. Another advantage is that analyzing individual data in different applications and reports is no longer necessary, which will save time on a daily basis.

Currently, connections with farming applications such as Dairy Comp, Uniform-Agri, CRV, and Herde already enable farmers to synchronize information about calving and inseminations between applications. Lely ambition is to continue to connect more partners over time, in order to hand the farmer more and more smart data.

Easy to use

Horizon offers an intuitive user interface that gives you fast access to all the information you need. This interface is the same on any device. Clear, customized dashboards are available when and where you need them. Customers always have control over their own data, by personally managing the data exchange approvals. Lely also believes in a solid platform complying with ICAR Animal Data Exchange standards. Data protection for both farmers and partners is ensured through this.

Planning

To ensure full support in the migration to Lely Horizon, existing Lely T4C customers will be personally informed by their Lely Center before the end of 2020. The migration is planned in a phased approach, from country to country, over the year 2021. This will allow ample time to train the Lely Center staff and support farmers to make sure that everyone is ready to work with Horizon and to ensure that future farming is at their fingertips.
