The dual variable speed header drive for PICK UP increases throughput and harvest efficiency

The newly refined Claas PICK UP head, designed for the JAGUAR forage harvester, features a variable, independent drive of the intake auger and pick-up reel that reduces fuel costs and improves pickup capacity.

The redesigned header takes an existing pickup reel and adds a new hydraulic drive, giving it greater adaptability in the field. This allows the pickup reel to be adjusted automatically to the ground speed to match the harvest conditions in the field and the auger speed adjusted automatically to the feed roll speed. In challenging harvest conditions, both speeds can be adjusted manually from the cab, allowing even more accurate crop feeding and consistent crop flow overall.

In order to operate with the dual variable speed header concept, the JAGUAR forage harvester is equipped with an optional dual hydraulic drive, which performs particularly well with the PICKUP. The mechanical drive remains the standard drive option.

While the dual variable speed header drive is designed specifically for use with JAGUAR 502 or 499 models, kits are available to fit other models.

“The ability to adjust your pickup and auger speeds independently is a game-changer for farmers. Designed with the farmer in mind, the new PICK UP header saves time and money, and leads to improved harvest results.”

says Matt Jaynes, CLAAS Product Manager, Forage Harvesters.

Run the Numbers

Recent North American studies have shown that silage harvesting using the new hydraulic drive resulted in an increase in throughput levels of up to 5.5% in extreme conditions compared to a mechanical drive, along with improved fuel efficiency.

Additional features include:

New Tires

New heavy-duty tire for rough conditions.

Five tine rows

With improved mountings for longer service life and extremely clean crop take-up.

Adjustable roller crop press

With both impressive and effective optimal material transport, the roller crop press is located closer to the intake auger, providing even crop flow.

Intake Auger

Equipped with a specially wrapped auger tube for stronger forces, two paddles, and tension springs, the intake auger is designed for demanding use.

Optimal ground contouring

Using an angle sensor, ACTIVE CONTOUR senses ground irregularities in advance, enabling fast operation over hilly terrain while keeping the rake at the proper distance from the ground.

Growing a productive forest requires hard work and commitment. Correctly timed thinning improves the forest’s growth conditions and makes trees grow sturdier more quickly. Thinning supports forest biodiversity when part of the forest is always in the growth phase.

“Thinning can also be called improvement felling, as it ensures the productivity of the forest and the high quality and health of trees. The better a forest grows, the better it sequesters carbon. Thinning ensures that trees can be processed into high-quality products that sequester carbon for dozens or even hundreds of years,”

says Tuomo Moilanen, forest specialist at Ponsse.

In cut-to-length (CTL) harvesting, trees are already processed up to the intended length in the forest, enabling thinning to be ecological. When the harvester operator plans trails so that they can also be driven by the forwarder, trees can be both felled and transported without needing to move around unnecessarily in the forest.

“At thinning sites, the distance between trails is roughly 20 meters, and trees remaining by the side of the trail will grow in Finnish conditions 20–25 percent more quickly, because they will have room to grow, both above and below,”

Moilanen says.

Ponsse’s harvesters, forwarders, and harvester heads have also been designed for thinning sites

The six-wheeled Ponsse Beaver and the eight-wheeled Ponsse Fox, Ponsse’s harvesters in the smaller size category, are ideal solutions for first thinning. Ponsse Fox is an excellent choice, especially when operating in soft terrain. High-flotation tracks should be selected as optional equipment for softer terrain to prevent surface damage.

At heavier thinning sites, the Ponsse Cobra and Scorpion harvesters, combined with the H5 or H6 harvester head, are the best choices in terms of productivity. In Ponsse Scorpion, the unobstructed visibility in all directions, together with cabin and crane leveling, makes working smooth even at dense thinning sites. As eight-wheeler machines, both models are also excellent in soft terrain.

While Elk and Wisent are the most popular Ponsse forwarders for thinning sites, Buffalo is also an excellent choice, especially when distances are longer, and the aim is to improve productivity. The forwarder can easily pick up trees from thinning sites when trails are properly protected (with branches) and as straight as possible; the fewer sharp bends there are, the less surface damage is caused.

At thinning sites, the harvester head should be selected according to the dominant tree species. However, it should be considered that damaged trees and other trees in poor condition must also be removed from thinning sites, calling for sawing and feed forces from the harvester head. The harvester head must be reliable at thinning sites because a large number of trees are produced quickly during each shift.

At thinning sites, much rests on the forest machine operator – the operator decides what trees are removed and what are left standing. The forest owner hands over their assets to a professional forest machine operator to receive the highest possible profit, also in the future.

Corn, soybean, and cotton production is up from 2020, according to the Crop Production report issued today by USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). Corn production is up 6% from last year, forecast at 15.0 billion bushels; soybean growers are expected to increase their production 6% from 2020, forecast at 4.37 billion bushels; cotton production is up 27% from 2020 at 18.5 million 480-pound bales.

As is done every year in September, planted and harvested acreage estimates for cotton were reviewed based on all available data, including the latest certified acreage data from the Farm Service Agency. Because of the completeness of the data, corn and soybean acreage were also reviewed for this report, a month earlier than usual. As a result, the area planted to corn is estimated at 93.3 million acres, up 1% from the previous estimate; area planted to soybeans is estimated at 87.2 million acres, down less than 1% from the previous estimate; and area planted to cotton is estimated at 11.2 million acres, down 5% from the previous estimate.

The average U.S. corn yield is forecast at 176.3 bushels per acre, up 1.7 bushels from last month’s forecast and up 4.3 bushels from last year. NASS forecasts record-high yields in California, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania. Acres planted to corn, at 93.3 million, are up 3% from 2020. The area to be harvested for grain is forecast at 85.1 million acres, up 1% from last month and 3% more than was harvested last year. As of Aug. 29, 60% of this year’s corn crop was reported in good or excellent condition, 2 percentage points below the same time last year.

Area for soybean harvest is forecast at 86.4 million acres, down less than 1% from last month but 5% more than was harvested last year. Planted area for the nation, estimated at 87.2 million acres, is up 5% from last year. Soybean yields are expected to average 50.6 bushels per acre, up 0.6 bushels from last month’s forecast and up 0.4 bushels from 2020. If realized, the forecasted yields in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia will be a record high.

NASS forecasts all cotton areas to be harvested at 9.92 million acres, 4% below last month’s forecast but 20% more acres than were harvested last season. Yield is expected to average 895 pounds per harvested acre, up 95 pounds from last month’s forecast and up 48 pounds from 2020. Area planted to all cotton is estimated at 11.2 million acres, down 7% from last year.

This fall, John Deere introduces the new, small-size H423 harvester head and the large-size H425 and H425HD. These new attachments replace the previous H413, H415, and H415HD models. Like its predecessor, these heads have a 4WD feed.

The H423 harvester head works on the 1070G, 1170G and 1270G wheeled harvester base machines and is ideal for thinnings and other fellings, where the tree diameter at chest height (BHD) is 150-350 mm. With improved hose routing from boom to harvester head, and from valve block to feed motors, this attachment offers improved durability, easy hose replacement, and improved hose protection with modifications to the frame. It has an operating range of minimum diameter at chest height (BHD) 40 mm to a maximum of 500 mm.

The H425 harvester head for the larger size class is available on the 1270G and 1470G wheeled harvester-based machines. This attachment is ideal for final fellings and other fellings where the tree diameter at chest height (BHD) is 250-500 mm. Also including improved hose routing from loader to harvester head and from valve block to feed motors, the hoses are routed through the frame and well protected within the structures, improving durability. Additionally, the H425HD harvester head added to the H425 model offers an HD tilt frame, expander pins in the upper end of the tilt cylinder, feed motor arms, and lower delimbing knives.

“The new harvesting heads provide excellent performance, durability, measuring accuracy, and economy. So far, we’ve received great customer feedback on the latest updates and can’t wait to see the updated harvester heads in action this season,”

said Sakari Suuriniemi, product marketing manager Wheeled Harvesters and Heads at John Deere Forestry.

A wide selection of saw motors and saw bars are also available for the H425 and H425HD harvester heads.

“These cotton harvesters are mostly all-new from the ground-up and represent a strong platform John Deere should be able to utilize for many years. An all-new mainframe provides a solid foundation for each machine and includes an all-new cab and power module. John Deere also increased the size of the new round module builders on the picker and stripper, making it possible to harvest more acres per hour,”

The CP770 is ideal for large to extra-large farmers and custom cotton harvesters who need to harvest the maximum number of acres per hour possible. When compared to its CP690 predecessor the CP770 can reduce harvesting costs by up to $1.50 per bale through reduced wrap, fuel, labor, and hauling costs.

John Deere was first to market with its exclusive round module builder that revolutionized the way cotton is harvested and transported from the field to the gin. As the third-generation round module harvester, the CP770 carries on the field-proven tradition of its predecessors while featuring a new round module builder capable of making modules 2% larger and 5% denser. Once the cotton is collected, the CP770 wraps and ejects the module in just over 30 seconds, providing the ultimate experience in non-stop cotton harvesting.

Part of the CP770’s increase in harvesting productivity can be attributed to the all-new John Deere PRO16 HS Row Unit fitted with high-speed stalk lifters and ultra-fast cotton-grabbing spindles.

Operators who work long days harvesting will benefit from the all-day comfort of the CP770’s new best-in-class cab. The cab is noticeably larger, quieter, and more comfortable than previous cabs, and provides operators with outstanding visibility to all the right places thanks to strategically placed cameras, mirrors, and lighting.

To document and capture harvesting data and for traceability purposes, John Deere offers best-in-class, integrated technology for the CP770 and the CS770 by equipping each with a Generation 4 Display. JDLink Connectivity is also included at no additional charge, making it easy for farmers to connect to their machines while enabling automatic data flow between their equipment and the John Deere Operations Center.

“Cotton is one of the only crops that can be fully traced from where it came from in a given field, through the gin, to the mill. Exclusive John Deere Harvest Identification Cotton Pro technology makes this possible. Although the industry does not yet mandate this level of traceability, it’s likely to become common in the future and both the CP770 and CS770 are fully prepared to meet those needs,”

Field-proven TamaWrap+ provides 360 degrees of coverage to protect and conserve fiber quality and prevent degradation from the field to the gin.

A new John Deere 13.6 L PowerTech engine and hydraulic power module improve fuel efficiency by up to 20% for the CP770 and up to 15% for the CS770, while reducing maintenance requirements and costs. When combined with the updated crop handling components, these systems work together to help farmers harvest more pounds of cotton per hour at faster speeds than previous models.

The John Deere CS770 Cotton Stripper provides a 2-point increase in turnout with its new field cleaner and packs up to 5% more cotton into a module while harvesting up to 10 more acres per hour than previous models.

“The CS770 delivers increased turnout, maximum uptime, improved wrap economy and most importantly, optimal productivity during harvest,”

Hay and forage harvest is a race against time, with tonnage and feed value starting to decline the moment the crop is cut. New John Deere W200 Series Self-Propelled Windrowers help farmers harvest their crop quickly and efficiently while promoting quick dry down for high-quality hay.

“The W200M and W235M Self-Propelled Windrowers offer a cost-effective option for farmers to consider with an all-new cab and a new lower horsepower option. Beef and dairy producers will benefit from the W235R and W260R, thanks to a new premium cab loaded with integrated technology and innovative features that let them easily make in-cab adjustments to improve windrow formation and dry down,”

said Chase Milem, John Deere hay, and forage marketing manager.

The W200M and W235M are available with optional Starfire receivers and a Generation 4 CommandCenter with AutoTrac. Optional TouchSet controls allow operators to quickly adjust windrow width and tilt from the cab while cutting. Using the TouchSet settings library presets and resume function, operators can move between settings with ease. This level of control makes it easy to optimize the windrows to accommodate for varying field and crop conditions.

Operators can electronically adjust windrow formation from the cab to optimize the crop being cut, to promote fast dry down. Thanks to a maximum transport speed of up to 24 mph and improved fuel consumption compared to previous models, time and money are saved when moving between fields.

Equipped with electro hydraulic weeders and a self-contained hydraulic power pack, it is effective in many types of soil conditions. The unit comes with a control panel for installation in the tractor cab. This weeder is designed to work around young vines, even with a very small size (from 1/2in diameter).

CLAAS Equipment Dealership Expands Service in Northeast Nebraska

Nebraska Harvest Center has announced plans to open a new dealership just east of Columbus, NE. Construction on the new ag equipment retail location has already begun and should be ready for business as early as September of this year.

The Columbus location joins four other Nebraska Harvest Center locations in Seward, Kearney, Wayne, and Ogallala.

“We are excited to expand our footprint in Nebraska. Providing our customers with superior sales and service is our number one goal. With this new location, we will be able to improve response times and support for a growing number of farmers in the area who have discovered the advantages of our CLAAS long line of equipment,”

said Paul Westbrook, Complex Manager, Nebraska Harvest Center.

However, according to Westbrook, the new 24,000 square foot facility is secondary to the team of talented sales, parts, and service technicians the location plans to hire. “With the release of this announcement, we will begin hiring for all departments.”

“Nebraska is a critical market for us and is right in our ‘back yard. Our North American headquarters and combine manufacturing facility are located in Omaha, just an hour and a half from the new Columbus location. Nebraska Harvest Center has built a sterling reputation for customer service that reflects well on our company and the equipment we manufacture,”

explained Eric Raby, President and General Manager – Sales for Claas of America.

The Top-10 New Product Competition is held annually in conjunction with the International Agri-Center. Product entries are submitted by companies and range from simple solutions to high-tech devices. Products are judged on originality, innovation, practicality, economy/affordability, and their overall value to agriculture by a panel of farmers, ranchers, university professionals, ag equipment dealers, ag media, and more.

Introduced in October 2020, the newly designed ORBIS 900 features a frame stamped from a flat piece of metal, with no welded joints, for superior strength. The knives, crop flow guides, and better-positioned feed drums on the new ORBIS 900 are all PREMIUM LINE, making the header more durable and providing more consistent cutting and feeding. The ORBIS 900 has a working width of 30 feet, the largest in the line.

Despite its large working width, the ORBIS 900 is able to follow ground contours for optimal performance. This is made possible by a new tilting frame that enables a +/- 5° correction in combination with AUTO CONTOUR hydraulic swing movement compensation. In addition to the two standard sensor bands at the outer edges, a third, centrally fitted sensor band is available as an option. This provides an enhanced ability to follow ground contours, especially on uneven ground.

The ORBIS 900 also features a folding design that allows the operator to fold and unfold it in 22 seconds for easy transport between fields to get the job done faster.

The new blockchain-powered business network was developed in collaboration with Bayer, which served as a founding member and active user of the network for live, customer-facing operations over the past two years in regions including the United States and Brazil, with further plans to expand globally.

With the support of Bayer, this flexible, scalable, and global platform will help farmers of all sizes access new markets and services, increasing their livelihoods through the ability to offer new premium products. Through access to improved supply chain information, this platform also enables farmers to optimize their own operations. TraceHarvest has the potential to be leveraged for other impactful use cases such as carbon offset crediting to food safety recalls, promoting both sustainability and consumer well-being. Through this platform, information across the lifecycle of agricultural products can provide insights to drive and reward sustainable practices throughout the food supply chain.

The BlockApps TraceHarvest Network is the first blockchain solution of its kind to track and trace the full lifecycle of agricultural products starting at the seed source. For products like seeds, this provides a full picture of stewardship as they are sold, exchanged, planted, harvested, and processed. In collaboration with the Crop Science Division at Bayer, the platform has been built and tested to the highest industry standard for traceability and provides a first and best-in-class solution for the grain industry. Farmers, manufacturers, distributors, and processors can selectively share and review data within a single, secure platform, making activities available to the entire chain. This streamlined engagement and real-time information exchange allow all parties to identify and address product tracking and integrity issues faster than previous manual processes allowed.

“Blockchain technology is already revolutionizing the agriculture industry, and we’re leading the way thanks to our partnership with the Crop Science Division at Bayer which has turned this concept from idea into reality. Together, we’re developing world-class innovation with farmers, setting new standards in sustainability, and driving digital transformation that will shape the future of the industry.”

said Kieren James-Lubin, President and CEO at BlockApps.

Current analog processes create significant costs in labor and resources and fail to deliver the data that farmers and other value chain participants need. Such inefficiencies also put businesses at risk of compliance violations across the supply chain and in multiple geographies. TraceHarvest brings agricultural products to market faster, helps safely launch new products in approved regions, and traces them accurately to provide strong proof of compliance with international regulations.

Bayer used TraceHarvest over the course of several growing seasons to track the lifecycle and status of the company’s highest-value agricultural products, including soybeans and corn, from the sale and planting through harvest.

Member farmers, manufacturers, distributors, and processors use the same TraceHarvest network to track where their products are going, providing them with full visibility into the source of their crops.

“By enabling the traceability of products throughout the food supply chain, TraceHarvest will provide a basis for new solutions and services around the food quality and transparency questions that are top-of-mind for farmers and consumers,”

said Sascha Israel, Bayer Crop Science CIO and Head of Digital Transformation.

“The TraceHarvest platform will enable our traditional and non-traditional business partners throughout the food value chain to explore new products, services, and business models. Trusting in the stewardship of agricultural products is essential to navigating the complex ecosystem of modern farming. Using TraceHarvest in production has allowed us to drive operational efficiencies, create value, and have greater visibility, transparency, and compliance throughout the entire food supply and value chain.”

said Michael Pareles, Digital Strategy and Growth Lead at Bayer Crop Science.

The TraceHarvest Network runs on BlockApps’ cloud-agnostic STRATO platform, a flexible, enterprise-grade, Ethereum-based blockchain solution for building and running business networks with built-in security. This shared infrastructure incentivizes greater cooperation and collaboration between businesses and farmers.

“TraceHarvest is highly scalable, which is crucially important because it allows members to add more business processes, use cases, and tech integrations into the very same network. For example, network members will be able to collaborate with downstream food producers to extend tracking of agricultural products even further down the value chain and ultimately verify claims made about their ingredients and sustainability practices.”

Kieren James-Lubin continues.
