You need to build a stable foundation for improvements to a pump station but you’re located in a five-foot water table within proximity to a creek. How do you keep the foundation from rising? One Georgia county’s engineer chose to pin it down with rock anchors and UMA Geotechnical Construction was the right fit for the job.

“The rock anchors are there for when the structure is empty. When it’s empty and the ground water table is above the bottom of the structure, if the rock anchors aren’t there, it could push up out of the ground like a boat. These buoyant forces are exactly what the rock anchors are there to resist,”

explains UMA’s Senior Engineer/Estimating Manager Mitch Crayton.

Cherokee County Water and Sewerage Authority outsourced this pump station improvement project to Atlanta-based Lakeshore Engineering, a heavy civil contractor that focuses on industrial, municipal, and environmental projects. UMA served as the
geotechnical subcontractor.

Located within proximity to Blankets Creek in Canton, Georgia, the water table is known to fluctuate. UMA’s sole function was to install a rock anchor system to keep the pump station’s concrete slab pinned down. The components to be built on top of the slab
would be a diesel engine-driven centrifugal pump and a concrete cast-in-place
emergency storage tank.

UMA’s team worked in a 23-foot-deep-by-56-foot-wide excavation to install rock anchors at the Blankets Creek Pump Station.

Working Down in the Hole

One of the biggest challenges for UMA’s team was working in a 23-foot-deep-by-
56-foot-wide excavation. Lakeshore Engineering had excavated the pit and installed a soldier pile wall with wood lagging. Tied-off workers accessed the pit via ladders.

“We’re working in a pretty tight area compared to what we’re normally used to on highway projects. It’s not the smallest footprint we’ve worked in, but it’s a lot smaller than our usual working space,”

says Crayton.

Lakeshore Engineering installed a mud mat to provide a stable working surface for UMA’s drilling rig and to keep the worksite clean. There was no air movement so the air was pumped in from ground level and circulated with fans to keep workers from breathing in diesel fumes.

The working area had to be dewatered also due to the proximity of Blankets Creek and a water table approximately five feet below the ground. While the failure of
dewatering pumps would not have been cataclysmic, the potential slow accumulation of
water in the working area could have damaged equipment.

One of the visual spectacles on the project was Lakeshore Engineering using a crane
with rigging to lower a Beretta T46 Drilling Rig into the excavation as UMA’s team
provided direction.

“It’s a smaller machine, but we selected it for this purpose. It doesn’t quite get the production that we’re typically used to, but it can hold its own with this smaller hole size,”

Crayton explains.

UMA’s crew was seasoned and used to working together. They were also familiar with the equipment and how to rig it based on past projects.

“We shut down around Christmas every year for safety and for training. We alternate between first aid, forklift certification, and crane and rigging so that everyone is safe on the job site. That’s always our number one concern,”

Crayton says.

Prime contractor Lakeshore Engineering used a crane with rigging to lower the Beretta T46 Drilling Rig into the excavation as UMA’s team provided direction.

Drilling the Rock Anchors

UMA was tasked with installing 24 rock anchors, evenly spaced every 10 feet vertically and 8 feet 8 inches horizontally. Skyline Steel supplied the anchors, which were 1-inch-diameter Grade 150 ksi DCP (double corrosion protected) bar. The owner’s representatives provided the grid layout with specific locations required to support the pump station equipment.

“It was critical to making sure these (rock anchors) worked because it would be very cost-prohibitive to move them. If even one failed, they would have to change reinforcing plans and the connection details of the slab foundation to the actual structure,”

says Crayton.

The Beretta was drilling a minimum 4.25-inch-diameter hole 15 feet down to bedrock with a permanent casing supplied by Star Iron Works. The drilling crew had to focus closely on ensuring that the anchors were plumb and in the exact location specified.

The material was higher quality partially weathered rock, although the crew hit a high-quality bedrock in a handful of areas. The team then drilled into bedrock with a 10-foot
rock socket.

“Our drillers are schooled enough to distinguish between the materials they’re drilling through. One drills a lot slower than the other and they can hear and feel the differences,”

says Crayton.

The Beretta was equipped with a down-the-hole hammer with a 4½-inch bit to drill the rock sockets. This tooling fit perfectly inside the casing, allowing the cuttings to be extracted onto the mud mat before being plowed away with Lakeshore Engineering’s Takeuchi skid steer loader.

“We drill down into a specific rock socket, place our anchors, and lock them all to that slab. That’s how we end up with our rock anchor system,”

Crayton explains.

The drilling rig was equipped with a down-the-hole hammer with a 4½-inch bit to drill rock sockets.

Testing Anchor Strength and Movement

UMA conducted two extensive performance tests to ensure that the anchors were of sufficient strength to support the pump station. The movement was essential also.

“These anchors are basically like high-strength rubber bands. Anything that moves has some sort of desire to go back to where it was. When they flood this pit with water, the anchors will keep the slab and pump station from rising,”

Crayton says, noting that the anchors are designed to move.

Testing requirements placed some restrictions on the schedule. UMA was only permitted to install two anchors on the first couple of days and conduct a load test to demonstrate that capacity was achieved before installing the third. This pattern continued throughout the project.

UMA was installing multiple corrosion-protected anchors. The corrosion protection is granted by several components within the anchor, in addition to the grout itself. The
grout was then pumped to grade until clean grout was observed.

“We worked with Lakeshore closely to help speed up their construction process and get out of the way so they could finish their job. The main way we expedited our work was to lock off the anchor to a mud mat using a secondary bearing plate,”

Crayton says.

The double bearing plate system had one bearing plate locking the anchor to the mud mat and one suspended in the air to transfer the loading to the foundation. UMA was able to get all of the testing completed at one time under the initial mobilization. This permitted Lakeshore Engineering to set a bearing plate at a certain elevation and pour the structural slab without having to wait on remobilization for final stressing. This allowed a majority of the elastic elongation to occur prior to the final placement of the slab, ultimately saving the contractor time and money.

The grout used to secure the rock anchors was mixed onsite with a batch plant.

Batching and Grouting to Lock in Anchors

UMA grouted the rock anchors in place. The material was mixed in a batch plant on-site
with a specific gravity of 1.85 to 1.86. Its team is trained to check specific gravity prior to pumping, and a third-party contractor was retained to take samples and ensure quality control.

This standard mix was one that UMA was accustomed to and achieved the strength that
was required on this project. The spec called for a minimum of 3,500 psi at three days and 5,000 psi at 28 days.

Most of UMA’s soil nail projects require larger material quantities and hole diameters, and also deeper drilling.

“The crew that was doing this job came off of a year-long soil nail project so they were used to drilling 30-foot-long, six-inch diameter holes, and four batches of grout at a time. There’s a pretty big difference between a rock anchor job and a soil nail job, and our crew adapted well to the switch,”

says Crayton.

The grout was pumped through a tremie pipe to the bottom of the hole from within the casing. The casing sections were installed with the Beretta drilling rig, which was equipped with a special adaptor. UMA was performing a duplex drilling process, which involves drilling the casing and the hole concurrently. Once the rock was hit, the casing was halted, and drilling continued with the inner rod.

UMA workers fed casing to the drilling rig by hand.

“Normally we would use an EZ Spot UR attachment on the excavator to handle large casing sections. We had to use smaller pieces on this job because we didn’t have the real estate to put them in the pit with us,”

Crayton says.

The majority of UMA’s work on the Blankets Creek Pump Station project was done within a week and completed on schedule. Despite the technical nature of the work, the distance between the Jobsite in Georgia and UMA headquarters in Colfax, North Carolina was the true challenge.

“Making sure that everyone who needed to observe different processes was onsite during the installation and load testing was our greatest challenge,”

JCB partnered with Make-A-Wish Georgia to deliver a “Wish Parade” for Wish Kid Aidan.

Aidan is an 11-year-old boy, who lives in Savannah, and was born with a heart defect requiring him to be on oxygen, impeding his ability to play outdoors for extended periods of time. Since he cannot go outside and play, his Make-A-Wish request was for a PS5 gaming system. Yesterday, his Wish came true and JCB got to play a major role.

JCB team members from manufacturing, office staff, the demonstration team, and the apprentice team, along with a few pieces of JCB equipment and Spider-Man, delivered some extra special surprises to Aidan on his Wish Day.

“Partnering with Make-A-Wish Georgia is such an honor for the entire team here at JCB, it was great to have team members from across the business come out to make today so special, and the reaction from Aidan and his family makes it so easy to continue supporting the efforts of Make-A-Wish Georgia,”

said Tonya Poole, Vice President for JCB North America.

A fan of all things Avengers and robot-related, Aidan’s Wish was for a PS5 gaming system which was provided by Make-A-Wish Georgia along with several games and accessories for the system. JCB in turn provided Aidan with a Nintendo Switch, a drone, Lego games, a gaming chair, and a headset all items which he can play with safely in his home. After opening presents delivered by Spider-Man and the JCB Apprentice Team and enjoying custom-made cookies, Aidan took a ride in the JCB Fastrac, a tractor capable of traveling at speeds up to 43 mph.

“It’s because of partners like JCB that we can bring wishes to life for kids like Aidan. We are truly grateful for the community that JCB has created to help us make more wishes come true,”

said Meghan Lowe, Southeast Development Director.

Since 1995, Make-A-Wish Georgia has been granting the wishes of local children facing critical illnesses. More than 20 years later, nearly 8,000 lives have experienced the impact of a life-changing wish. Make-A-Wish Georgia is a movement, powered by you, to renew families and communities whose lives have been disrupted. We all have the power to make wishes come true.

“Louisa brings a broad cross-section of experiences that will allow deeper insight into how we can continue to make sustainability one of the core components of our business and strategic direction. While we have made progress on a wide range of sustainability initiatives, we are aware everyone must do more if we are to avoid the negative impacts of climate change, particularly on the global food supply.”

said Eric Hansotia, AGCO’s current chief operating officer and upcoming chairman and CEO.

With Parker-Smith’s new appointment, AGCO is underscoring its commitment to making sustainability a business priority while providing farmers the tools they need to meet the challenge of feeding a growing population using fewer natural resources. The company plans to release its next sustainability report in 2021 and enhance its current practice of providing transparency on its material issues.

Ms. Parker-Smith said:

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to help bring a sharper focus on the many sustainability projects across the company and develop new programs that will have significant benefits for our customers and society. We recognize the agriculture industry is a key part of the solution to combatting climate change, and we are committed to bringing smart solutions to our farmer customers to increase sustainable agricultural practices across the globe.”

AGCO has undertaken a range of sustainability efforts to reduce energy use and carbon emissions at its facilities as well as conserving water use and minimizing waste. The company’s Valtra plant in Finland was the first major tractor factory in the world to begin using Neste MY Renewable Diesel as the start-up fuel for all new tractors, saving nearly 2 million kg of CO2 emissions which equals the annual output of approximately 630 diesel cars.

SANY America is growing its family of excavators in 2020, bringing more machines that deliver the power, performance and capabilities needed to tackle the toughest jobs. With two new excavator models making their debut at ConExpo 2020 – and even more planned – there are more reasons than ever to discover how SANY delivers More than Machines.

Growing the midsized excavator market

Midsized equipment has become more and more popular for use in commercial and industrial material handling, rental, forestry and agriculture applications in the past few years. And that’s included a big increase in interest in SANY’s medium excavator lineup. In fact, according to EDA data, the SY215C represented nearly 8 percent of all midsized (21-24 metric ton) excavators sold to independent rental companies. In the larger 24-28 metric ton category, the SY265C was the excavator of choice for over 9.5 percent of industrial and commercial material handling buyers, more than 9 percent of independent rental company clients, and over 6 percent of agricultural customers.

With such a surge in the midsized market, SANY is looking to offer customers even more versatility with two new medium excavators being unveiled at ConExpo – the SY155U and SY225C.

SY155U short radius excavator

The SY155U is a short-radius excavator that delivers performance and versatility for those in the market for a medium-sized excavator at the lower end of the midsized market. Powered by a 105-horsepower engine and weighing in at 35,274 pounds, the SY155U offers a nearly 18-foot dig depth capability and a 27’ 4” overall maximum reach while offering a minimal tailswing. Plus, with a bucket breakout rated for 23,155 pounds, this new SANY excavator is a great option for moving materials around any narrow or confined jobsite, as well as in shipping yards or agricultural operations.

“As construction sites continue to get tighter and as work in metro areas and cities gets narrower, short-radius excavators have become a more popular and in-demand item.”

said Ben Miller, Vice President of Sales – Construction Equipment for SANY America.

By engineering the SY155U to have a minimal tailswing, it is purpose built for work in between buildings and in crowded urban construction environments. It’s also ideal for roadside contractors and companies working on road repair or construction projects. With the smaller footprint and tighter range of motion, the SY155U can get the job done in locations where local restrictions call for minimal or no road or lane closures. This means the SY155U is certain to be a popular choice for road crews working on culverts and bridge repairs or urban roadway improvements.

SY225C medium excavator

The second new excavator, the SY225C, fills in the gap between SANY’s existing SY215C and SY265C. This new workhorse offers 164 horsepower with a 54,013-pound operating weight, and is ready to tackle a variety of different jobs. With a 21.5-foot dig depth and max reach of 33’10”, plus a 28,551-pound bucket breakout rating, this excavator is built to dig, lift and move a variety of materials.

“The SY225C really fills a need in between the SY215C and SY265C,” said Miller. “The new SY225C offers a more stable undercarriage, a greater counterweight to handle a wider range of attachments and additional hydraulic lines – including the quick coupler connection – that make it much more versatile in the field and easy to switch from something like a bucket to a hammer without the need to pound pins.”

With an exceptionally versatile range of capabilities, the SY225C is a particularly excellent addition to the SANY product line for both general contractors and for rental fleet owners. The SY225C ships standard with auxiliary hydraulic lines down the boom as well as the quick coupler connection, which means owners can quickly change attachments on the SY225C to meet the different needs of any job or different rental customer requirements. In addition, the SY225C is the third SANY excavator model that is produced in the United States at the SANY America headquarters in Georgia.

New excavator features and benefits

Both medium excavators offer a suite of standard features, such as easy-to-access filters, in-display diagnostics to help increase productivity and uptime, and LED work lights to provide greater visibility in dark or nighttime operating conditions. In addition, both models also offer SANY’s quick coupler plumbing and pre-plumbed auxiliary lines to make connecting and controlling attachments quick and easy. Plus, each model uses components from well-known and trusted names in the heavy equipment industry, including Kawasaki main pumps and valves, Izuzu (SY155U) and Cummins (SY225C) engines.

“The SY225C is the third excavator line now produced in Georgia, and we expect to bring manufacturing for the SY155U and even more products to our Atlanta headquarters by the end of 2020,” said Miller. “We’re also continuing to expand our range of excavators, and customers will see that even more models are planned later this year, into 2021 and beyond, allowing us to continue to show how SANY quality changes the world.”

Our product family is growing – Grow with us

SANY is growing to meet the needs of more and more customers, and has been ramping up production and developing these and other new equipment lines to keep up with demand. No matter what industry you work in, SANY has powerful, reliable equipment that can help you get the job done. Plus, when you invest in SANY excavators or wheel loaders, you also take advantage of SANY’s five-year, 5,000-hour warranty, delivering not just peace of mind, but also a lower overall cost of ownership.

AGCO and Massey Ferguson did respond to the call of the specially created French non-profit organization “Les Visières de l’Espoir” – “Hope’s Face Shields” initiated by 3DNatives.com, a French specialised 3D printing media. The project was initiated after 3D Natives learned from the Caen’s Hospital (Normandy – France) that due to increased pressure on resources, the hospital was really short on protective equipment. “Les Visières de l’Espoir” – “Hope’s Face Shields” leverages the powerful action of a network of France-based companies putting together their skills and additive manufacturing capacities to ease the work of our Heroes with the aim to respond to the immediate demand of 13,000 face shields coming from 94 hospitals and medical centres across France.

“The Massey Ferguson team is humbled by the opportunity to help. As part of our new Vertical Integration’s activities planned for our factory extension named Beauvais 4, we were close to start our Additive Manufacturing activities to produce small series parts for our tractor’s production as well as our new tractor’s personalisation workshop. After successful weeks of tests, this activity was planned to start April, 1st 2020. However, with our Manufacturing activities being temporarily on hold because of the coronavirus breakout, we see Additive Manufacturing as a modest contribution, yet full of meaning, from us to help stop the pandemic,”

“The strengths of additive manufacturing and 3D printing – print anything, adapt on the fly – make it an opportunity to help address shortages of parts related to face shields among other things. The face shield has a 3D printed frame and a transparent plastic shield to provide protection for workers. The design and production process has been fully approved by the Caen’s Hospital medical staff based in Normandy, France.” “As part of “Les Visières de l’Espoir” – “Hope’s Face Shields” initiative, HP, our 3D printer partner, is providing the printing compound, while Decathlon (sports good producer and retailer) provides the transparent plastic shield and supports the overall logistics. The Massey Ferguson Additive Manufacturing team ensures the printing of the frame, the assembly of the full face shield and the delivery to the medical staff, as other members of the initiative’s network are doing such as L’Oréal, BASF, Lactalis, Aereco, Proteor, Sculpteo and Solvay amongst others,” says Mr Bouaouli.

“From April 6th, and for the next three weeks, we are aiming to produce some shields that we are humbled to donate to support heroes from the medical staff working hard to save lives in our community. We are proud of our colleagues who volunteered to run the 3D printers”

concludes Thierry Lhotte, Vice-President & Managing Director Massey Ferguson Europe & Middle-East.

The Scott Powerline tale is a classic American success story of hard work and service, and here is some of that inspiring detail:

The Scott Powerline story began in a cotton field outside of Tallulah, LA., with a chance meeting between Tom Scott, Jr. and Irby Construction Company. An enduring relationship between Mr. Scott and Irby brought Scott Truck and Tractor, a farm and general construction equipment distributor founded in 1939 by his father Tom Scott, Sr., into the world of utility-related construction and maintenance. Since that day, over forty years ago, Scott has provided contractors and providers in the powerline, telecommunication, and other related utility industries with industry-recognized products and unsurpassed service. Scott equipment has served on numerous projects from Alaska to Florida, Canada to California – not only that, but many of the employees of Scott Powerline have chewed much of the same ground supporting that equipment. According to Tom Scott, Jr., our company’s founder, “Service to the customer is priority #1. That commitment is the basis of our success in the past, present and future.”

That commitment to service, coupled with the recognition of enormous opportunity in the industry, led Mr. Scott to “spin off” the Powerline division and form Scott Powerline and Utility Equipment, L.L.C., on March 31, 2000. At the time, Scott Powerline employed no more than 13 employees and worked out of a small office in Monroe, LA – today, we’ve more than quadrupled our workforce operating out of a much larger facility in Monroe as well as a location in McDonough, GA.”

Scott Powerline and Utility Equipment is headquartered in Monroe, Louisiana and has a service center in McDonough, Georgia. Scott offers everything from Mantis cranes to boom trucks to bucket trucks to pressure drills and tracked utility vehicles.
