With a production capacity of around 80,000 engines a year, and employing over 1,200 people, the factory is specialized since 1998 in the production of Cursor C8, C9, C10, C11, C13, and C16 series engines, with 77 technical types and over 5700 options available. The site represents a top-notch center in the world of both diesel and natural gas engines, providing a wide range of customers with the best solutions, tailor-made on the specific needs of the various applications from on and off-road vehicles to marine and power generation.

The road to the highest honor was built on solid pillars and high knowledge, and key gold points mentioned were: quality, machining maintenance, and the Karakuri system. As an industry 4.0 strongly focused plant, Bourbon-Lancy has applied its built-in innovative and research-oriented approach in a number of sector ground-breaking projects, mainly in the IT and logistic applications, such as the introduction of the Sherpa smart and mobile collaborative robots along the production line.

All these activities, projects, and team efforts, in addition to being internationally recognized by important scientific publications, have been honored by the label Industry of the Future, which acknowledges the most emblematic industrial achievements in France.

The Bourbon-Lancy plant is well known in the region for its commitment to sustainability,
with a number of projects focused on minimizing the impact of industrial activities and on
protecting the biodiversity of the surrounding environment, making it the ideal home of the
most successful natural gas-powered engines on the market. As a testament to it, in March, the 10,000th Cursor 13 NG engine rolled out from its production lines.

World Class Manufacturing is an international methodology for the organization of the manufacturing process and has been adopted, on a worldwide basis, by the most important companies in every kind of business, from automotive to services, from consumer goods to industrial tools.

WCM has the goal of continuously improving production performance and gradually eliminating waste, which helps to ensure product quality and maximum flexibility in responding to customer requests. All this is achieved through a structured and integrated production system that encompasses all the plant’s processes, from safety to the environment, from maintenance to logistics and quality, as well as the involvement and motivation of the personnel working in the factory.

WCM activities are formally audited at regular intervals and each production plant is assigned a score and the appropriate prizes and medals (Bronze, Silver, Gold).

Thanks to the application of the WCM methodology, FPT Industrial’s activities have been
undergoing a process of continuous improvement and achieving increasingly higher levels of competitiveness, thus contributing to set the company as one of the most important and reliable powertrain developers and producers on a worldwide basis. The energy sector is going through a transformation to build a cleaner future for our communities, and oil and gas are still going to play an important role in our energy mix during this transformation. Cummins is constantly striving to reduce emissions from its diesel and natural gas products while developing low- and no-carbon technologies such as electrification and hydrogen fuel cells as the infrastructure grows to support them.

Why the focus on engine technologies?

Building and operating a well site typically takes more than 100 engines to be present at different times. It all starts with the site preparation where dirt is moved, and the site is prepped to construct a good pad. At this early stage, engines power machinery ranging from earth moving equipment and cranes to various sized trucks. The second step is drilling down to start the well; a typical drilling rig has many engines on it. Once the drilling is completed, frac rigs, powered by large engines, come to the site to service the well. Finally, once the pressure pumping is done, the well is ready to produce hydrocarbons for many years to come.

Let’s look closer at how a diverse set of engine applications bring a well site to life.

Engines that power various oil and gas equipment

Large equipment including frac rigs, cementers, blenders, compressors, and drilling power modules are working throughout drilling sites; and drilling sites are great for anyone enthusiastic about mechanics and electronics.

Early on in a drilling site, you would see drilling power modules, often powered by high horsepower engines such as a Cummins QSK50, creating the well and the borehole. Then pumps, powered with smaller engines such as the Cummins QSL9, are used to seal the spaces between casing and borehole walls. Then comes the frac rigs with the power and equipment necessary to pump the water and additives that crack the rocks where hydrocarbons are captured. Often a set of twelve or more of this equipment works together at each wellhead. These pumps are powered by engines as large and heavy as passenger cars, such as the Cummins QSK60. These engines are powerful enough to create enough pressure to crack the rocks that are more than a mile beneath the ground.

Once you add the other drilling equipment including hydration units, blenders and various pumps, you have engines ranging from less than 100 horsepower up to 3,000 horsepower.

Engines that power vehicles

A drilling site features many vehicles ranging from smaller pick-up trucks to class 8 heavy-duty trucks. Pick-up trucks, often powered by a Cummins 6.7L engine, are used to haul small mobile equipment, and for transportation. Larger class 8 heavy-duty trucks haul the pressure pumps from one well site to another as needed. About one-third of these trucks depend on Cummins engines, often a Cummins L9 up to the X15 engines.

This new series of enclosures are pre-designed with 85 dBA or 70 dBA sound attenuation options at 23 feet, offering a unique plug and play solution to fit a diverse range of gas power needs. Compatible with two Cummins generator models in 1100kW and 2000kW power nodes, the CHP enclosures can offer up to 83.4% and 88.6% of total system efficiency respectively.

All-new standard enclosures are built with serviceability in mind, offering ample space around the generator to facilitate servicing, while keeping a compact enclosure design requiring a smaller footprint. A removable intake hood has been added for easier accessibility from the service technicians, and greater access is provided at one side of the enclosure to fill and drain the coolant system. These natural gas enclosure solutions are offered as a fully integrated package including piping, cooling, and wiring requiring minimal power connections during the on-site installation phase. Available with a pad or roof-mounted radiators, these enclosures provide greater flexibility to choose what best fits the site’s needs.

Additionally, variable-speed fans are incorporated within every enclosure package for optimum ventilation while maintaining low energy consumption.
