“As part of this study, we conducted a historical analysis going back to 1980 and found that fertilizer costs tend to go up when corn revenues increase. Notably, these prices tend to go up exponentially even after accounting for natural gas prices and higher demand,”

says Joe Outlaw, Ph.D., the AFPC co-director.

Dee Vaughan, a farmer in the Texas Panhandle, says his farm has felt the impact of climbing prices that account for approximately 36% of a farms’ operating cost.

“In just over 2-years, I’ve seen an astonishing 264% increase in the cost of nitrogen fertilizer alone. My farm’s overall fertilizer cost has increased 241%,”

Vaughan says.

Farms are experiencing this price hit regardless of location. Jim Sugarek who farms near Bee County in South Texas also saw a 264% increase in fertilizer costs on his family farm.

“As I prepare to put a seed in the ground in just a few weeks, I couldn’t wait to see if these price hikes would settle to something close to a normal year – much less risk them surging even more,”

Sugarek says.

In the study’s historical analysis of the nitrogen fertilizer industry, four manufacturers, including CF Industries, Nutrien, Koch, and Yara-USA, account for approximately 75% of the total domestic nitrogen fertilizer production.

Inflation and supply chain issues experienced nationwide have been cited by the industry as key factors to the impact on farmers’ fertilizer prices. However, the study shows there are some trends to be considered to the contrary.

Namely, the industry indicates natural gas accounts for 70-90% of variable production costs for nitrogen fertilizer. The study finds that the increase in one type of nitrogen fertilizer, anhydrous ammonia, the value of natural gas accounts for only 15%, or $102, of recent price increases.

“The study shows that once the value of natural gas has been subtracted from nitrogen, the residual tends to closely track the price of corn,”

Outlaw notes.

While this correlation could nod to increased demand for nitrogen products as corn prices rise, it could also be “due to the exercise of market power by nitrogen product manufacturers,” the study asserts.

“Our findings raise serious questions and clearly help explain the frustration with this situation farmers are feeling nationwide,”

Outlaw says.

The study was commissioned by state corn checkoffs and associations in Texas, Missouri, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

As noted in National Corn Growers Association’s release today, looming tariffs would add insult to injury. The AFPC study states,

“Any import tax on nitrogen fertilizers would raise prices for both domestically produced and imported fertilizer by the full amount of the tax rate multiplied by the pre-tax price.

“Fertilizers play an integral role in a crop’s health and success. The steep price hikes hitting farm country are alarming for corn farmers who count on nitrogen and other fertilizers for their plants to thrive. The breadth of how far-reaching this is impacting farmers is telling that something needs to be done to keep America’s farmers from bearing the burden of an industry pushing the limit of how thin they can cut a farms’ margins,”

Vaughan concludes.

Väderstad, one of the world’s leading companies in tillage, seeding and planting, introduces the new Tempo L 16-24 Central Fill. By handling both seed and fertilizer in a bulk system, the capacity of the world-record planter is increased even further.

The high-speed precision planter Väderstad Tempo L holds the world record for plating 502.05 hectares of maize in 24 hours, a record set in Hungary in 2017.

Now the Tempo L family is growing and the new Tempo L Central Fill with a central hopper for both seed and fertilizer is introduced, says Mattias Hovnert, Senior Vice President Sales & Marketing, and adds:

Due to increasing requirements for field hygiene and more attention to ground water conservation, shallow soil tillage is becoming increasingly important. Weed seeds and volunteer grains need to be kept near the soil surface, whilst germinated plants are completely cut off at the root. Full-surface, light soil movement not only fights weeds, but also disrupts negative water capillary action near the surface. This allows valuable ground water to be preserved for the subsequent crop.

New soil tillage tools are constantly being developed to meet this need. When it comes to cultivators, the most suitable tool for shallow, full-surface soil tillage is the duckfoot share. Compared with a wing share, the duckfoot achieves significantly shallower working. For cultivators in the Cenio and Cenius product ranges, AMAZONE offers the C-Mix duckfoot share with a width of 320 mm. With a maximum tine spacing of 30 cm, there is a 2-cm overlap between the shares. This ensures uniform, full-surface movement, whatever the conditions. In addition, the C-Mix duckfoot share is extremely flat along its entire width, so that it remains parallel to the ground surface and ensures a uniform, shallow cut. Germinated weeds and volunteers are cleanly cut, so they can dry out.

The analysis by Meyers Norris Penny (MNP) calculates that

“If Canada adopts the EU model, the potential economic impact of reduced fertilizer use would be devastating to Canadian farmers.”

The calculations show that by 2030, the prairie provinces will have the following losses:

• Alberta – $2.95B loss in their Canola and Spring Wheat crops
• Saskatchewan – $4.61B loss in their Canola and Spring Wheat crops
• Manitoba – $1.58B loss in their Canola, Corn, and Spring Wheat crops

The accumulated cost to individual farmers is enormous. These losses cannot be passed on to the end consumer because grain and oilseed production is priced on the world market. This has serious implications on Canada’s food security.

“This analysis shows the proposed Canadian changes have the possibility of devastating our agriculture value chain. Farmers don’t need the government to tell them how to properly use fertilizer. We engage crop consultants, soil tests and use the latest technology available to us. Our government should be strongly supporting the agronomic techniques that we have put into practice,”

Calculations show that Canadian prairie farmers are net-zero emitters. With the many agricultural and technological advances that have been made over the past two decades, Canadian farmers have been leading the charge around healthy soils and carbon sequestration.

This machine offers a wide range of options for simultaneously spreading seeds, fertiliser and even catch crops. With it, Lemken, the specialist for professional arable farming, has expanded its portfolio to include a machine for consistently cost-optimised market fruit cultivation.

The seed hopper of the Solitair 9+ Duo holds 1,850 litres. Its capacity can be split 50/50 or 60/40, depending on needs. As a result, two application variants are possible:

• In the single-shot version, seeds and fertilizer are combined downstream from the two metering units in each of the two hopper segments. The different components are guided to the double-disc colters via a seed pipe and deposited in a seed furrow. This allows a suitable starting dose of fertiliser to be added for winter sowing or a complete fertiliser application for summer sowing. An automatic tramline mechanism is integrated into the distributors.
• The double-shot system provides greater deposition flexibility. With this system, the two components flow separately to a double-disc colter via doubled distributors in two seed pipes. They can then be spread either in a single row, as with the single-shot method, or separately and alternately in two rows following a quick exchange of the tramline cartridge in the distributor. In addition, the deposition depth of every other row can be adjusted separately via the pressure roller up to a difference of 5 cm. This allows two different seeds to be placed at different, optimum seeding depths or inter-row fertilisation to be applied while seeding.

The Solitair 9+ Duo is available in working widths of three and four metres. Orders are being accepted now; full availability is scheduled for January 2022.

Although always fitted with two tanks, 2208 can be ordered with single product metering for reduced cost or with dual product metering bringing the benefits of the Gen II product range to smaller strip-till units for the first time. Section control is also optional, with the choice of one or two sections being offered.

All machines will be supplied with the Montag ISOBUS dry rate controller and ISOBUS scales as standard. As with other Montag dry fertilizer systems for the 3-point mounted KUHN Krause Gladiator, 2208 will need to be mounted to a Montag steerable cart (ordered separately) and towed behind the toolbar.

The Montag 2208 can apply fertilizer at rates up to 500 lbs/acre per tank (maximum total rate: 800 lbs /acre). With no metering cartridges to change out, variation of application rate is stepless throughout the range.

As with all Montag products, the environment in which 2208 will work has been taken into account throughout the design: all components which come into direct contact with fertilizer are manufactured from either plastic or food-grade stainless steel, and all other components are designed to be resistant to corrosion and provide many years of reliable service.

The Montag 2208 is available to order from KUHN as of June 1, 2021, for use with 4-, 6- or 8-row 3-point mounted KUHN Krause Gladiators. Field install options are available for customers wishing to retrofit 2208 to an existing 1205M or 1200M series KUHN Krause Gladiator (compatible steerable cart and hitch is required).

Running 500 acres, he prefers to invest in his own field equipment for independence and flexibility rather than rely on custom applicators for fertilizer and spraying.

Over the years, Elliot has become a loyal customer, purchasing Salford tillage machines to manage his field work. He says he’s been happy with his I-1200 and I-5100 machines, reporting their field performance measures up to his expectations and deliver his ideal field finish. Elliot’s experience with Salford equipment meant he had high expectations when he invested in a BBI Liberty.

“I saw a model at a local farm show and knew it was what I was looking for – stainless steel with simple drive components and a roll-top cover,” he says. “I was looking for something to stand up to the harsh wear and tear fertilizer causes on a spreader and was happy to find the Liberty unit.”

Getting Started

Spring 2020 was the first year Elliot operated his new fertilizer spreader. And while he was pleased with the unit’s performance, he had to work out a few kinks first. Like any new machine, it took some field time to get his spreader working to his standards.

“My local Salford territory manager was on hand to help set up the spreader from the start, he was able to set my desired fertilizer spread pattern and was on hand for any questions or follow up concerns.”

Salford’s service commitment came through for Elliot last spring as he placed some follow up calls to Hank, his local territory manager. Together, they resolved some minor concerns to make sure the machine was performing up to Elliot’s standards.

“The machine works great, the Liberty is part of my fleet and I expect it will stay in my equipment lineup for rest of my farming career,”

says Elliot, noting one of the biggest benefits of the machine is its ideal size for his fields and nutrient application requirements.

No Limitations

The name of the machine, Liberty, is a reflection of its break through design that no longer restricts general broadcast application, but rather a more targeted, precise nutrient application. Salford’s BBI Liberty spreaders are available in mechanical and hydraulic drive options that have been manufactured to meet every grower’s economic and performance needs.

Proven Results

“Fertilizer is important, but it’s hard to tell just what difference it makes on yield and crop quality at harvest time, especially on rented land,”

says Elliott.

It can be hard to measure fertilizer performance, especially when it comes to assessing the impact of application, but Elliot believes he’s seen a difference in using the Liberty spreader after just one growing season. He includes flexibility and convenience as performance measurements in his operation.
