In the first nine months of the year, tractor registrations grew by 43.8%, and strong increases were recorded for all other types of machinery. The excellent performance of the domestic market combined with the growth of exports – says Alessandro Malavolti, president of the manufacturers – will lead to an overall turnover of the Italian industry of no less than 14 billion Euros by the end of the year.

Apart from the limitations still in force for some areas, EIMA 2021 confirms its international character. During the five days of the exhibition, in addition to agricultural entrepreneurs and mechanization technicians, businesspeople from all over the world are expected at the Exhibition, including official delegates selected by the ICE offices (about 300 representing 60 countries), interested in negotiating the purchase of machinery that responds to the specific needs of the various farming and business models.

A wide range of categories, new products and absolute previews are the traditional strong points of the event.
There will also be the finalist models of the Tractor of the Year, which for the first time will be able to parade in an open-air arena, where machines for bioenergy chains can also be seen.

“As well as being a great promotional and commercial showcase, EIMA has always been a great ‘relations machine’ and this is a fact of strategic importance, because the agricultural machinery industry is part of a complex system, in which close interactions are necessary between the agricultural world, the industrial world, research activities, environmental issues, and political and administrative guidance and coordination activities. The Bologna exhibition is recognised as the forum that connects all these players, the place where agro-industrial supply chains are increasingly closely connected and where the future of agriculture is planned”.

The 2021 edition of EIMA International is indeed one of the most interesting from a political perspective. The Government will be present through the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Manlio Di Stefano; and the chairmen of the Agriculture Commission of the Chamber and Senate, together with delegations of the members of these commissions, will also be visiting the exhibition for a discussion on the best policies for the sector.

The Italian market and machinery exports are doing well. According to Comacomp, the positive trend should continue in the coming months thanks to a high number of orders. The October rendezvous with EIMA International is a great opportunity to give further impetus to companies in the sector. To date, 520 exhibitors have been confirmed for the components exhibition alone.

The components industry for agricultural machinery and equipment is restarting at a faster pace than expected. Data from the periodic survey carried out by Comacomp (FederUnacoma) on the basis of surveys of member companies indicate a clear increase in total turnover in the first quarter of the year. A total of 51.5% of the companies surveyed recorded increases of over 20%, and another substantial number of companies (22.5%) recorded increases of between 11% and 20%. The majority of companies (60%) have seen their turnover increase on the domestic market, but the expansion trend has also affected the share of turnover generated by exports.

Non-European markets also performed positively: 53% of the sample recorded a growth in business, while a significant number of companies (35%) maintained last year’s levels.

According to Comacomp’s forecasts, the favourable economic situation is expected to continue in the coming months, since the order figures are clearly growing: for the April-June period, 29% of the companies surveyed estimate an increase in orders of more than 20%, while a further 26% expect growth of between 11% and 20%. Components thus confirm their place as one of the driving sectors of agricultural machinery, both in terms of production value (over 2.7 billion euros) and the ability to offer highly innovative solutions.

EIMA International – the great exhibition of agricultural machinery scheduled to take place in Bologna from 19 to 23 October – is dedicating a specific space to this important sector, the EIMA Componenti exhibition, where 520 specialized manufacturers, 144 of whom are foreign, have already confirmed their participation (in addition to the companies making components for spraying and those for irrigation located in the “Idrotech” exhibition). From transmissions to engines, from electronic control units to on-board computers, from axles to the smallest mechanical gears, there are more than 350 product categories at the show. It is a much-awaited rendezvous for the industry’s players, observes FederUnacoma, the direct organiser of EIMA,

“not only because it will be the first “in person” event after exhibitions were stopped due to the health emergency, but also because it is being held at a time of great recovery for the market.”

Compared to other production sectors, the primary sector is the one that has shown the greatest resilience. Global production of grains and milk increased, as did the prices of the main agricultural commodities. Agriculture and mechanization are strategic in sustaining the population, but the pandemic is holding back the European and Italian agricultural machinery market, where a recovery possible in the coming months. Here is the Federunacoma full press release.

The COVID emergency has given new centrality to agriculture which, unlike other productive activities, has shown greater resilience in the face of the pandemic. In a global environment characterized by a generalized decline in many sectors, which resulted in a significant drop in world GDP (-4.5% at the end of the year according to the OECD), the primary sector instead increased its production capacity. This fact is highlighted by Alessandro Malavolti, president of FederUnacoma, the Italian association of manufacturers of agricultural machinery, who at the Federation’s Annual General Meeting held today in Bologna took stock of the main trends in the primary sector and the market of agricultural machinery. According to FAO estimates – noted the president of FederUnacoma – in 2020 global grain production should reach a record value of 2,756 million tonnes (+2.2% in 2019), with an increase also in demand (+2.4%) and world trade (+1.6%). Milk production was also positive (+0.8%), while meat recorded a drop of 1.7% due to contingent factors. The prices of the main commodities also rose, with meat, poultry, and rice showing increases of 8.3%, 7.7%, and 8.2% respectively.

The food insecurity created by the pandemic – according to the FAO, by 2020 the number of undernourished people could grow by 130 million – and the growing demand for food in different areas of the world give agriculture, and with it agricultural mechanization, an increasingly strategic role also to guarantee social stability. “In this landscape – said the president of FederUnacoma – agricultural machines are an essential tool for enhancing production and safeguarding the territory. In fact, thanks to the research and innovation activities of our industries, today’s mechanical machines use more and more eco-friendly technologies, also in line with the political priorities formulated by the European Commissioner Ursula Von DerLeyen“. Despite this strategic role, today the world mechanization market is experiencing a transition phase, with different trends from country to country. The first half of the year saw an increase in tractor sales in the United States (+10.4%) and Russia (+7%), certain stability in Canada (+0.3%), and a setback in Brazil (-5%). The most significant decreases are recorded in the Asian markets: Japan (-29.5%), Korea (-7.3%), and especially India (-11.3%). Turkey is a case to itself, recording a 75% increase as a rebound after the collapse of recent years. The minus sign prevails in Europe where the market contraction amounted to 12.1%, corresponding to 68,831 registered tractors. The Italian market was in the red, even if the month of August showed a slight recovery compared to the six-monthly figure, bringing the deficit for the first eight months of the year to 15% (in June it was 18%).

Despite the climate of uncertainty, the August figure seems to foreshadow a possible trend reversal, which is confirmed for Europe as well as for Italy in the recent climate surveys conducted by CEMA, the European manufacturers’ association.

“To ferry the sector out of this situation – added Malavolti – it is essential to assert the strategic role of agricultural machinery. In Italy there is a need for a system of incentives that help the market recovery, especially with a view to technological renewal and innovation; a system based on long-term planning, that is independent of economic and political contingencies”.

In recent months FederUnacoma has presented to the Government a multi-year incentive plan for the purchase of new mechanical machinery. Today we renew this action with the request to allocate part of the funds to be distributed under the Recovery Fund to the agricultural machinery sector.
