Doosan Bobcat North America and Green Machine Equipment, Inc., a manufacturer of renewable power drive systems, announced today a strategic partnership to produce electric/hydraulic Bobcat compact excavators.

Green Machine will custom retrofit Bobcat excavators with their proprietary battery technology to replace the standard diesel power source and will sell the machines in select markets beginning this year. These electric/hydraulic machines will provide the power and performance equivalent to diesel-powered models, along with considerably lower daily operating costs, zero emissions, reduced noise, and minimal maintenance. The electric/hydraulic compact excavators will be beneficial to operators working in urban environments, such as working close to other buildings or in public spaces.

“This strategic partnership marks another key milestone in our drive to bring the latest technologies to our customers and accelerate electrification in our industry,”

said Joel Honeyman, vice president of Global Innovation at Doosan Bobcat.

“Doosan Bobcat is excited to partner with Green Machine as part of our commitment to innovation and sustainability.”

Launched in 2010, New York-based Green Machine is a wholly owned subsidiary of alternative energy company Viridi Parente, Inc. Viridi Parente is revolutionizing the future of distributed energy products. The company’s high-tech, clean, safe and sustainable battery pack has already begun displacing energy systems in a vast array of markets.

“At Green Machine, we are changing the way the world uses energy,”

said Jon M. Williams, CEO.

“By teaming up with a global leader like Doosan Bobcat, we can further advance our technology and the benefits of electrification through the power and performance for which Bobcat machines are known. Through this partnership, we will deliver safer, more cost-effective machines that can provide construction support in nearly any project environment, indoors, outdoors, confined spaces, and other applications that traditional fossil-fuel-powered equipment cannot support.”

Doosan Bobcat is constantly exploring new ways to advance the compact equipment industry with new technologies, services and products. Through its partnership with Green Machine, the company can continue to produce innovative products and solutions to help lead the compact equipment industry forward.

“We make innovation a part of every product we produce at Bobcat,”

said Honeyman.

“Electrification is another step forward in our commitment to sustainability, as well as a technology that will allow our customers to work more productively, efficiently and cost-effectively. This is why we continue to seek breakthrough innovations to empower people to accomplish more today and in the future.”

Michael Erwood is Director of Dealer Development for SANY America and has worked in business development and corporate banking for decades, most recently with SANY Capital USA, the finance arm of SANY America. He recently shared the latest updates on new dealers joining the SANY dealer network and SANY’s plans for continued growth in 2020.

Five New Dealer Partners

Interest in SANY equipment has been surging, said Erwood, including demand for the new motor grader and drum roller revealed at ConExpo earlier this year. Prospective new SANY dealers have told Erwood they are impressed with the company’s overall vision for growth in North America, the broad range of equipment offerings, and the global strength of the SANY brand.

“Dealer interest remains strong, and SANY is actively executing its strategy to expand its dealer network across the United States,”

said Erwood.

In just the first few months of the year, five new dealers have joined the SANY dealer network, from the Northeast to the Southwest. And Erwood says there are many more currently working to start the process of offering SANY equipment at their locations.

Northeast Heavy Metal LLC (SANY New York)

Based in Lockport, N.Y., just outside of Buffalo, Northeast Heavy Metal LLC (SANY New York), has partnered with SANY to provide excavators, wheel loaders, and other construction equipment. The dealership is the third SANY dealer location in New York state and will provide machinery, service, and support for customers in Western New York and the Finger Lakes region.

Central Power Systems & Services

Located just a few miles from the Missouri River in Maryland Heights, just outside of St. Louis, is Central Power Systems & Services Inc. For more than 60 years, the company has delivered a full range of products and services for construction, oil and gas, mining, military, and many other industries, and now offers the full line of SANY construction equipment to customers at the Gateway to the West.

A1 Iron Corporation

Also joining the dealer network is A1 Iron Corporation in La Vista, Nebraska. In addition to providing the full line of SANY equipment along with service and maintenance options for customers in the Great Plains, A1 Iron also has the distinction of being the first exclusive SANY dealer in the state of Nebraska.

Trinity Equipment

On the Pacific Coast, SANY welcomed Trinity Equipment, Inc. in Colton, California. This veteran-owned and operated dealer is serving customers throughout Southern California, providing heavy machinery for construction projects and landscaping operations across the region.

Innovative Equipment Services LLC (EquipmentShare)

Finally, Innovative Equipment Services LLC (EquipmentShare) in Phoenix, Arizona is not only the latest SANY dealer, but holds two unique distinctions. It is the first dealer located in the state, and also marks the sixth dealer location for EquipmentShare with exclusive SANY retail distribution rights.

Building Partnerships for Success

Unlike some vendor relationships, SANY takes pride in truly working as a partner with each dealer, taking time to truly understand each dealer’s goals and challenges while working alongside them to make sure they succeed. SANY works to become a strategic partner with its dealers, working to provide tools and services that enhance the value of their business and equip them with everything needed to be successful as a dealer.

“We have a comprehensive and efficient new dealer evaluation process that focuses not only on the financial capabilities and geographic location of the dealer, but on the construction of a detailed strategic plan,”

said Erwood.

“The strategic plan covers all aspects of a dealer’s operations and provides a roadmap to success. SANY takes the time to understand the strengths and motivations of its dealer partner to maximize a dealer’s return on investment.”

As part of this process, SANY representatives complete tours of facilities to understand operations on the ground and conduct interviews with management teams at each dealership to meet them personally and start forging a working partnership. SANY also performs financial, operational, and market research as part of the evaluation, working to make sure prospective dealers are set up to both be successful as a dealership and deliver on the SANY promise for every customer.

More than Machines – Sany Delivers Partnerships #MadeForAmerica

Both customers and dealer partners praise the performance, competitive pricing, and industry-leading five-year, 5,000-hour warranty that is synonymous with SANY equipment. SANY works to deliver reliability and performance to its customers and takes the same approach with its dealer relationships. Time and again, new dealers say that working with SANY is unlike the relationships they’ve had with other OEMs, with SANY investing time and effort to forge a true partnership, providing the tools, services, and support they need to succeed. This relationship also helps SANY ensure that from coast to coast, SANY customers know they will find the same consistent quality, performance, and assistance at their local SANY dealer.

Yanmar CE Division is excited to announce the launch of our entire compact equipment line-up in a premium red color scheme.

All of Yanmar excavators, the V4 wheel loader, and all tracked carriers are available in the new premium red. The rest of the product lineup will be changed to the new color scheme in the coming months.

In May 2020 the brand launched the SV40, the first machine in its family of products in this new red color. The SV40 is a four-ton class ultra-tight tail swing excavator designed and built specifically to meet the needs of the US and Canadian markets.

Jeff Pate, Division Manager for Yanmar America’s Compact Equipment Division, states:

“Yanmar America and its dealers are excited about the color change and the opportunity to differentiate ourselves from the competition. This family of products in a new premium red color scheme gives the owners of Yanmar machinery the same great quality they have come to trust. It’s more than a machine – it is an experience.”

“This is truly an exciting change for our Compact Equipment Division”,

says Jeff Albright, President of Yanmar America. He added,

“This new look strengthens the sense of unity of our brand and visually reminds our customers that we are committed to remaining true to our core values to provide exceptional customer experience.”

The brand’s dealers were truly excited when compact equipment machines in the new red color were showcased in February at the 2020 Compact Equipment Dealer Meeting at the Yanmar EVO//Center in Acworth, GA. With this launch of a family of products, the company is taking orders for immediate delivery.

The current Yanmar compact equipment product lineup consists of nine excavators, six having true zero tail swing and three ultra-tight tail swing machines; four-wheel loaders, and two tracked carriers.

Starting with the launch of the world’s first compact excavator in 1968, Yanmar has since expanded its excavator offerings to nine total models. Each excavator is purpose-built to overcome the most challenging conditions, work with efficient use of power, conserve fuel, and provide exceptional flexibility with the same stability and performance you would expect from more conventional excavators.

“To win one of the world’s most respected engineering prizes is an outstanding endorsement for JCB’s electrification team, who have achieved so much in applying a science which was new to our business.

“JCB’s electric digger is a huge engineering achievement. The team has developed all parts of the electric propulsion system to deliver system performance that matches real customer requirements. This is a huge achievement in itself, but the additional benefits of zero exhaust emissions and much lower noise has lifted the 19C-1E excavator to a new level.”

The 19C-1E excavator is the world’s first volume-produced fully electric mini excavator and with it, JCB has shown it is possible to make powerful construction machinery without an internal combustion engine. Hundreds of the machines have been sold and so far they have saved the equivalent of 33,290 lbs in CO2 emissions across 5,616 hours of work.

As well as significantly reducing carbon emissions, the electric mini excavator has zero exhaust emissions and very low noise levels. This combination makes it much better suited than traditional construction equipment for operating inside buildings or in areas where noise must be kept to a minimum, for example near hospitals and schools and in cities where night shift work is often necessary.

JCB has been awarded a contract to supply the U.S. military with a fleet of specialised high speed excavators over the next eight years in a deal worth up to $269 million (£217 million).

The deal centres on the supply of High Mobility Engineer Excavators (HMEEs) for the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps.

Prototypes of the machine – capable of speeds up to 55mph (88kph) – were first developed in 2002 specifically for the U.S. Army to meet its demand for a high-speed backhoe loader capable of undertaking military engineering tasks. In 2005, JCB was subsequently awarded a contract worth around $209 million, along with an additional service contract valued at around $20 million. Subsequent contract extensions and international sales have seen HMEE production for the U.S. and allied nations rise to 1,200 machines.

Today it was confirmed that a new contract has been signed for the supply of up to 400 HMEEs which will all be manufactured at JCB’s North American headquarters in Savannah, Georgia. In addition to the base unarmoured HMEE, JCB will also provide armoured variants as well as attachments and service support.

“When it was developed, the HMEE revolutionised the way military tasks were carried out and we are delighted that the U.S. military has shown great faith in the product by placing this new order.”

Graeme Macdonald | JCB CEO.

JCB Inc President and CEO Richard Fox-Marrs added:

“To win this eight year contract is fantastic news for JCB’s North America Headquarters, which has been manufacturing HMEEs here for the past 13 years. The U.S. military has shown tremendous confidence in this JCB product which speaks volumes for the team behind its design, engineering, manufacturing and after sales support.”

The HMEE combines the capabilities of the world-renowned JCB backhoe loader and the innovative high-speed JCB Fastrac – the world’s fastest tractor, which has full suspension and anti-lock brakes. The objective of the HMEE concept is to have a machine capable of travelling at military convoy speed without the need for transportation by a truck and low-loader trailer.

Chris Giorgianni, Vice President of Government and Defense at JCB North America, said:

“The JCB Government and Defense team is proud to continue to support the U.S. military through the extension of the HMEE programme. The fact that the U.S. military has entrusted JCB to manufacture the HMEE for over a decade is a testament to the work the entire team here has accomplished. We look forward to furthering the HMEE programme and working with the U.S. military on future projects.”

The 17.5 tonne, 6.7 litre engine machines are well suited to a range of military and disaster relief missions, including earthmoving, fortification construction and ground clearing. In addition to its top speed of 55mph (88kph), the HMEE is certified for military transport on ships, rail and aircraft, and for airdrop operations. It is available in various configurations including an armoured specification. It is four-wheel drive, four-wheel steer, can lift more than two tonnes and dig to a depth of almost four metres.

Neomat, Gap Sud Mécanique, Comet Loc, ACHD, Serge Monod Equipement and Kobest joined the KCME network at the start of 2020, providing improved coverage of France and demonstrating KCME’s commitment to better servicing customers in its French speaking regions.

Neomat

It covers a significant area across France including Ile de France region (Paris area) and Oise. The company is a sub company of the family group Payen, which has specialised in the distribution of Public Works materials for more than 50 years. As a KCME dealer, Neomat will focus primarily on the sales and service of compact excavators, including the SK140SRLC-7, as well as demolition excavators for the Grand Paris project. A rental fleet will also be created in order to demonstrate the Kobelco product performance and low fuel consumption.

Gap Sud Mécanique

It covers the Alpes de Haute Provence and Hautes Alpes regions. The family-run business specialises in the sale and service of brand new and used CE equipment, rental and the sale of loader cranes for trucks. The company is very customer service-centric and will use KCME’s European warehouse in Amsterdam to ensure that machines are delivered quickly to its customers across France. Although Gap Sud Mecanique’s territory is relatively small, customer demand for machines in this area covers the full Kobelco range, from the smallest SK08 minis to the largest SK850LC-10 machines.

Comet Loc

It covers the Alpes Maritimes and Var regions. Comet Loc has an excellent reputation in customer responsiveness and service, with specific expertise in equipment for farmyards and vineyards. This dealer also has a big rental operation, managing a fleet of 80 excavators from 1.5-30t.

ACHD

It will help support significant coverage of France including in the Burgundy and the Rhone regions. ACHD has specialised in the compact equipment sector for more than 15 years but is now looking to expand its portfolio into heavy machinery. The company, which employs a workforce of 12, is looking forward to demonstrating Kobelco’s technological expertise through the SK75SR-7 Side-Drain and SK140SR-7 Side-Drain machines, the innovative hybrid technology in the SK210HLC-10, and showcasing Kobelco’s pioneering demolition models.

Serge Monod Equipment (SME),

It covers the Savoie and Haute Savoie regions. The company, which has 21 employees, prides itself on its excellent customer service and fast delivery. When SME managing directors Laurent Legouhy and Raphaël Saillet, were looking to expand the company’s CE equipment portfolio, they were keen to partner with a high quality construction brand, so Kobelco was the obvious choice. Like Gap Sud Mecanique, SME will use KCME’s central European warehouse to ensure that machines are delivered quickly to its customers across France, particularly to those based in the Alps, where access and working conditions are challenging.

Kobest

It covers the Aisne and Champagne-Ardennes region. The company is committed to providing a high quality after-sales service, thanks to its team of highly skilled technicians. Although Kobest is a very young company, its founder, Simon Hofmann is the third generation of the family to start distributing TP equipment. Kobest will focus specifically on Kobelco’s latest machines, including the SK85MSR-7, SK130LC11 and SK140SRLC-7.

In addition to expanding its French dealer network, KCME has also welcomed a new member to its marketing and field sales team. Roland Danion, who has 20 years’ experience in the construction industry, joins the team as Retail Sales and Marketing Manager and is responsible for the whole of France. Forty-six-year-old Roland joins KCME from Hydro CTA, and prior to this he had been the Sales Director of a large CE Equipment dealer in North-Western France. In his role as Retail Sales and Marketing Manager for KCME, Roland will be the direct contact for national accounts, support the Kobelco dealer salesforce and manage all local events. He will work closely with Business Manager, Jean-Philippe Delion as well as Product Support Manager, Vincent Gribonvald, and Team Leader Spare Parts Representative, Mignon Terpstra.

KCME Managing Director, Makoto Kato said:

“France is one of KCME’s key markets and so we are delighted to welcome these six new dealers to the Kobelco network. The appointment of Neomat, Gap Sud Mécanique, Comet Loc, ACHD, Serge Monod Equipement and Kobest demonstrates our commitment to servicing our customers in the French speaking regions, while the recruitment of Roland to the KCME team highlights the importance we place on providing the best possible support to our dealers.”

How hard work and an entrepreneurial spirit forged the next generation of Kang Construction

Ferlin Kang didn’t always know he wanted to go into the construction industry. Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, he was exposed to the energy and opportunity that comes with living in a growing, evolving city. Ferlin knew he could pursue different paths in life, but he also knew how unique it was to have the opportunity to carry on his father’s business as a first-generation Canadian.

“My father had humble beginnings, immigrating from Asia. He had been in construction since the 1960s before starting Kang Construction Ltd. in 1982 in Calgary,” Ferlin said. “When I was in my teen years, I started working with the company and thought there was no way I’d be doing this.”

Kang Construction purchased its first excavator in early 1988: a Hitachi EX200LC. It was the first excavator of its kind to operate in Alberta. Courtesy of Hitachi

But for Ferlin, the opportunity to carry on the family business was something he grew interested in, and soon began to enjoy.

“My father came here, established himself, started a business and became an entrepreneur. Being able to grow the business to this point is not something to take lightly,” Ferlin said. “I didn’t want that legacy to go away.”

And that legacy will remain intact. Ferlin is now the vice president of the 60-employee Kang Construction, as his father, Alvin, gradually steps back.

Forged from orange

Initially, Kang Construction began carving out a niche in the petroleum industry. Due to an industry need for excavation, Kang Construction purchased its first excavator in early 1988: a Hitachi EX200LC. It was the first excavator of its kind to operate in Alberta.

“For us, the Hitachi brand loyalty reaches all the way back to our beginnings as a company when we first purchased our EX200,” Ferlin said. “Hitachi’s always been known for manufacturing heavy equipment that is tried, tested and true. They’re very reputable and providing the right equipment for the right job is always very important to us.”

The EX200 wasn’t the only “first” for this company. In December 2018, Kang Construction was also the first company in Alberta to purchase the ZX345USLC-6.

It was the first excavator of its kind to operate in Alberta. Courtesy of Hitachi

“Our fleet of Hitachi excavators ranges from a 470, which is our largest, to the 225, 160, 135, 85, all the way down to the minis. We also have a 350 that has a long-reach telescopic boom mounted to it for deep excavations, or we can change it to a 60-feet-long-reach boom,” Ferlin said. “Just from our fleet, you can see the versatility that Hitachi equipment provides.”

While Kang Construction began with a niche in the petroleum industry, they have since grown drastically. Their growing fleet is a result of growing services.

“We started to go more into the earthwork side of things and away from the petroleum side toward the 2000s,” Ferlin said. “We got into more detail and mass excavations for commercial, retail and industrial projects.”

Bringing an edge to the fleet

Soon, Kang Construction expanded to offer installation of water and sewer underground utilities to their projects. This is where the 345’s versatility really shined.

“With the inner-city job sites, we deal with some tighter areas,”

Ferlin said. “Accessibility of the 345 is definitely positive.”

As it has grown, Kang Construction has tackled larger, high-profile jobs within the area. Recently, the company has been working at the Foothills Hospital Calgary Cancer Centre connector, providing earthworks, and water and sewer utilities to the project.

“The 345 worked out really well for this project in the sense that we have a new Tier 4 engine in there, which just gives minimal emissions,” Ferlin said. “A new machine like the 345 is perfect when working near a sensitive hospital environment.”

Another advantage of the 345 is the power it brings to tight spaces as a reduced-tail-swing model.

“The fact that it’s a reduced-tail-swing and has power, that’s just an added bonus,”

Ferlin said. “It’s perfect for our fleet.”

Productivity is the name of the game

If Ferlin had to choose one word that is most important to Kang Construction, it would be “productivity.” As technology advances and the needs of their clients become more stringent, he has to rely on equipment that can deliver.

“If the equipment works efficiently and safely, that’s paramount,” Ferlin said. “Breakdowns or reliability issues are critical in our business. I find that for us, Hitachi works.”

For their Hitachi equipment needs, Kang Construction turns to Wajax, one of Canada’s longest-standing and most diversified industrial products and services providers.

“Our dealer support from Wajax has been fantastic. We’re able to get anything we need from them quickly to keep us up and running,”

Ferlin said.

Along with contributing to the bottom line, Hitachi excavators are a favourite among Kang Construction operators, too.

“Getting a new piece of equipment is always like Christmas to everybody,” Ferlin said. “They love the 345. They find that being inside the machine, it’s quite roomy. They’re not crunched like they are in some other machines.”

The future of Kang

Ferlin has hopes that the company will continue to grow in Calgary, a city which he describes as “opportunistic.” And he is grateful for the growth Kang Construction has seen thus far.

“We’ve always been aggressive, ever since our small beginnings. But I couldn’t have envisioned us being involved in the types of jobs we’re working today, 15 years ago,” Ferlin said. “We are excited to see the legacy continue for our company.”

As for the company’s culture, Ferlin plans on keeping a family mentality at the core.

“I think in our current society, some-times family might be overlooked. Family is very important to me and has always been,” he said. “We always try to treat our company and employees like family, and I don’t see that changing in the future.”

Today, Hitachi introduced the EX1200-7 excavator, which will provide increased efficiency, reliability and durability for customers. The excavator, which is available in North and South America, is the third machine in Hitachi’s new EX-7 series lineup, following the recent launch of the EX2600-7 and EX5600-7.

“Available in a backhoe or shovel configuration, the EX1200-7 is our smallest mining excavator and also serves as a crossover machine for construction customers,” said Brian Mace, mining product marketing & applications manager, Hitachi Construction Machinery – Americas. “This versatile machine delivers an astounding combination of power and the latest technologies you need to get the job done, whether its large-scale excavation or mining.”

Enhanced efficiency

Thanks to Hitachi’s Fuel Consumption Optimization (FCO) technologies, the EX1200-7 improves total fuel economy by six percent as compared to the previous model (the EX1200-6) through engine and hydraulic system improvements. The EX1200-7 features a fuel-efficient Cummins EPA Final Tier 4 engine with DEF. For non-regulated countries, a Cummins engine featuring fuel-calibration optimization settings helps contribute to improved efficiency. Additionally, when the machine is in neutral, auto-idle reduces engine speed to save on fuel consumption.

The new EX1200-7 also features a 4.5 percent increase in bucket capacity with a 7 m3 (9.2 cu. yd.) capacity. Equipped with optimized swing control, the new machine also has an improved hydraulic system with a flow regeneration valve to reduce power requirements from the hydraulic system and engine, lowering fuel consumption and improving pump life.

Improved reliability

For reliable performance, the EX1200-7 undercarriage has three single-sided upper rollers on each side of the track frame that help maintain track shoe clearance and reduce debris build-up. Additionally, the boom and arm are welded, utilizing a full-box section design to evenly distribute stress and provide ease of maintenance. The underslung low bend configuration of the front attachment hoses removes the need for clamping to help reduce chafing and increase reliability.

A new option with the machine is the auto-lubrication system for a bulk excavation front attachment, which supplies grease to the superstructure including bucket pins. The advanced system comes redesigned with a large capacity grease tank, new grease pump, in-line grease filter and breather with filter, resulting in a more reliable system with less downtime.

Increased durability

The EX1200-7 design was created for optimal frame longevity to ensure the machine withstands the demands of any operation. With the cab resting on 6-point, support type, fluid-filled elastic mounts, the cab durability is significantly improved due to reduced shocks and vibrations.

Likewise, a center track frame delivers optimal stress dispersion in order to reduce the chance of failure in high-stress areas. An improved track link design also mitigates premature failure of the master pin while oil-filled idlers and rollers eliminate the need for daily lubrication.

Amplified comfort

The EX1200-7 not only gets the job done, it also provides maximum comfort while doing so. The pressurized cab’s climate controlled air conditioning helps overcome environmental extremes, and the operator seat was specifically designed for the mining industry with a weight-adjusting cushioned seat that allows the operator to customize suspensions settings.

A large, multi-functional display provides key machine information that is fitted with an LED backlight to improve clarity and reduce reflective glare. An optional sun visor and roll screen also help provide maximum comfort.

The EX1200-7 also provides the option of Aerial Angle, which is popular among customers and works as a 360-degree vision system. The system assists with noting equipment surroundings through a display monitor that combines a set of images captured by cameras positioned at different locations around the machine.

The EX1200-7 will be available to the United States, Canadian, Latin American and Brazilian markets. Hitachi’s EX-7 Series excavators are manufactured in Japan.
