John Deere Presented with Eight 2022 AE50 Awards for Innovative Product Engineering from ASABE

John Deere was recently presented with eight 2022 AE50 Awards for outstanding innovations that improve production agriculture. Each year the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) recognizes the 50 most innovative product-engineering designs in the food and agriculture industry with AE50 Awards, as chosen by international engineering experts.

Winning products are recognized for their role in bringing advanced technology to the marketplace. These engineering developments help farmers, and food processors, increase efficiency, enhance quality, improve safety, and increase profitability. This year John Deere received the 2022 AE50 Awards for the following innovations:

See & Spray Select uses advanced camera and control technology to differentiate color on fallow ground, detects weeds, and spot sprays them.

Last March, John Deere hosted one of its largest product launches. One of the award-winning innovations introduced was See & Spray Select, a factory-installed and machine-integrated solution that enables farmers to spot spray of weeds on fallow ground. See & Spray Select uses advanced camera and control technology to differentiate color on fallow ground, detects weeds, and spot sprays them.

“This targeted spray application has similar hit rates to broadcast spraying while applying 77% less herbicide on average, providing tremendous savings on inputs for farmers,”

Dawson said.

Also receiving a 2022 AE50 Award were MY22 John Deere 9 Series Tractors. The tractors help large-acre grain produces start earlier and run later to complete their spring seeding and planting work during tight, optimal seeding and planting windows. Powered by an all-new John Deere PowerTech 13.6L engine, 9 Series Tractors can pull wider implements faster and more precisely than ever before. When paired with integrated John Deere precision ag technology, farmers can drive important management changes to improve crop yields, lower input costs, and farm more acres in less time.

Last March, John Deere was the first agricultural company to bring to market a factory-installed, integrated liquid-fertilizer-delivery system on a tractor and planter together. The ExactRate liquid fertilizer system includes integrated ExactRate tanks on an 8RX four-track Tractor, integrated plumbing, and integrated factory-installed fluid tanks on the planter. When full, customers can use ExactRate to cover up to 80 acres per fill when applying at 20 gallons per acre. In addition, tracks on the tractor and planter reduce ground pressure and minimize soil compaction while seed and fertilizer are precisely placed.

John Deere also received an AE50 Award for its MY22 1775NT 24-Row Planter with features that increase onboard seed and fertilizer capacity and reduce soil compaction. New commodity tanks provide a 30-bushel increase in onboard seed capacity and a 150-gallon increase in liquid-fertilizer capacity compared to previous models, with a mainframe tracks option that reduces ground pressure under the center section by 70% compared to tires.

When full, customers can use ExactRate to cover up to 80 acres per fill when applying at 20 gallons per acre.

“The reduction in ground pressure helps increase crop yield by reducing soil compaction in rows under the center frame and increases the productivity of existing farmland. The additional onboard commodity capacity reduces the number of seed and fertilizer tender stops, saving customers time and fuel,”

Dawson said.

John Deere HDF Drapers were another AE50 award winner. These drapers provide the superior ground-following capability for on-and-off-ground harvesting, so customers can recover more crops while meeting the high-capacity needs of today’s combines. The HDF combines a flexible cutter bar with a hinged frame and hydraulic suspension and is the industry’s first combine header that merges a flexible cutter bar; hydraulic suspension between combine and head and between center frame and wings; a hinged frame with vertically articulating wings; and in-cab, on-the-fly float pressure and cut-height adjustment. This combination offers the best terrain-following performance in the industry.

Another AE50 award was presented to John Deere for its Quick Change Blades for its ProSeries Openers that help farmers save time and reduce labor costs required to change them on no-till air seeding tools. Using Quick Change Blades significantly reduces dealer maintenance costs and the time a customer may spend under the drill performing this routine maintenance.

Both machines feature a new cotton handling system that reduces wrap and hauling costs up to 8% on the picker and 12% on the stripper.

John Deere W200 Series Self-Propelled Windrowers received an AE50 award and are available with optional new features that include TouchSet in-cab push-button controls operators can use to adjust swath flap and forming shields from the cab. This technology helps them maximize their windrowing efficiency with every pass through the field.

Last August, John Deere introduced the new CP770 Cotton Picker and new CS770 Cotton Striper. Each machine provides unmatched levels of productivity, technology, and efficiency for cotton growers. The CP770 Cotton Picker can harvest more than 10 acres per hour while reducing cotton losses. The CS770 Cotton Stripper can harvest up to an extra 100 acres per day in dryland cotton.

“Both machines feature a new cotton handling system that reduces wrap and hauling costs up to 8% on the picker and 12% on the stripper. Customers and the environment benefit through less wrap and fuel being used through the life of these harvesters,”

Dawson said.

It owes its engine horsepower, rated at more than 500 hp, to a multitude of Fendt technologies such as VarioGrip or GripAssistant that deliver the power reliably and efficiently to the ground in all situations. This enables it to retain flexibility during various operations, providing ride comfort for on-road travel that is unrivalled in this performance class.

Fendt iD low engine speed concept

The Fendt 1000 Vario always runs within the maximum torque range for the lowest specific fuel consumption, which means that high power is already delivered at low engine speeds. “High torque, low engine speed” is the system according to which all vehicle components such as engine, gearbox, fan, hydraulics and all auxiliary units are tailored to suit the ideal engine speed.

High torque – low fuel consumption

The Fendt iD low engine speed concept results in permanently low fuel consumption and extended service life. The speed band of the Fendt 1000 Vario ranges from 650 rpm to 1,700 rpm. In the main working range, the speeds range from 1,100 to 1,500 rpm, which is gentle on the components and lowers consumption. The engine of the Fendt 1050 Vario already delivers an impressive 2,400 Nm of torque at just 1,100 rpm.

The way Fendt iD works

The entire drive technology of the Fendt 1000 Vario is exceptionally efficient. The high-capacity engines with VTG turbochargers unfold their enormous power potential efficiently at low engine speeds. Transmission and variable four-wheel drive ensure ideal power distribution within the optimal consumption range. The Concentric Air System (CAS) cooling concept with forced-draft high-performance fan cools all heat exchangers according to needs and further increases overall efficiency. All consumers, such as the airconditioning, air compressor or alternator, are coordinated for low wear through low engine speeds.

A master of heavy draft work.

It is powered by the highly efficient MAN six-cylinder engine. With a 12.4-litre cubic capacity, it reaches a high amount of torque even at low engine speeds: On the Fendt 1050 Vario, the maximum torque of 2,400 Nm is there at just 1,100 rpm – perfect for heavy draft work. This fast high-horsepower tractor reaches its top speed of 60 km/h at just 1,450 rpm, and 40 km/h at a fuel-saving 950 rpm.

of 1,800 bar and is therefore very efficient.

Reversible fan

Quick, easy radiator cleaning without downtime – thanks to the reversible fan. This can reverse the air stream automatically – now as a headland management sequence – so the cooler elements are effectively blown clean.

Turbo efficiency

The engine, tried and tested many times in the truck segment, has been tailored to heavy loads based on the load spectrum in heavy fieldwork. The charging is done through the VTG turbocharger and results in high torques even at low engine speeds. Low engine noise level and exhaust brake via the VTG, which is gentle on the brakes and minimises wear.

Economical, low-emission, environmentally friendly

The smart solution for compliance with the new Emissions Stage V is decisive for the economy of the drive train. So, we equipped the engine with an exhaust after-treatment that enables the lowest fuel and AdBlue consumption. Exhaust after-treatment is a combination of SCR technology, the diesel particulate filter and the diesel oxidation catalyst.

Engine characteristics – Fendt 1050 Vario

Through the well-rounded torque curve, more power is already available in the lower speed range. Furthermore, the constant power range provides a broader engine speed band over which the maximum power can be called up. In this range, the rated speed is equivalent to the maximum power.

Everything flows.

Versatile hydraulics

The modular design of the hydraulics opens up a whole range of options. The valves come in a choice of UDK, DUDK and FFC couplings. You can use the right attachment, every time; the system includes ½” and ¾” valves with a maximum flow rate of 140 l/min and ⅝” valves with a maximum flow rate of 170 l/min. The DUDK and FFC couplings can be coupled under pressure from both sides.

Oil flow according to need

Both control pumps supply the respective separator via its own oil circuit with the ideal quantity of oil and the right oil pressure. For example, the fan of a pneumatic sowing machine requires a high flow rate, but low pressure, while the remaining consumers, such as steering, power lift, chassis or markers, also require high oil pressure at a low flow rate on the second circuit.

The benefits of dual-circuit high-capacity hydraulics are clear – effective fuel savings due to the reduced throttle losses on the pressure limiting valve, and the unnecessary oil heating associated with it.

Twice as strong

Alongside load-sensing pumps with 165 l/min or 220 l/min pump capacity, the Fendt 1000 Vario has high-performance hydraulics with 430 l/min – for the toughest of requirements. On 2 separate circuits, one pump delivers 220 litres and a second 210 litres. So, you have 2 control pumps supplying multiple oil extractors – controllable with up to 6 da valves at the rear and 1 da valve at the front. The separate hydraulics and transmission oil supplies means the 1000 Vario will be compatible for use with bio-oil in the hydraulic circuit.

Two valves can be prioritised for the dual-circuit high-capacity hydraulics.

Coupling system with many advantages

On the one hand, the flexible system enables fast machine changes independent of coupling size. On the other, the fleet can be gradually converted to larger valves. It also comes with all the advantages of flat-face FFC couplings: a large diameter of ⅝” for more flow, leak-free coupling, greater efficiency thanks to fewer pressure drops, easy cleaning, and a longer lifetime as less dirt gets into the coupling. All valves have a breakaway function without pressure loss.

You can opt to have the replaceable couplings screwed into the block and quickly replaced depending on the attachment you want to use.

Assistants for reliability.

Engine-gearbox assistants

Engine and transmission are automatically aligned with the Tractor Management System (TMS). The TMS controls the engine speed and transmission setting automatically, independent of the speed so that the tractor is always moving at maximum efficiency, thus saving fuel. The engine load reduction is controlled by the automatic maximum output control 2.0, depending on implement operation.

Braking assistants

A highlight you wouldn’t want to miss: In auto mode, the new Handbrake Assistant automatically activates the handbrake when you climb out of the cab or turn off the engine. And vice versa, the assistant automatically deactivates the handbrake when starting off. If you stop and take your foot off the brake pedal, the tractor stays standing safely, even on slopes. The Deceleration Assistant, which automatically actuates the brake lights when decelerating more than 1m/s², even before actively braking, provides additional safety when braking. This provides an early warning for traffic following the tractor.

Driver assistance

Driving safety matters, on the road and in the field. The unique Fendt Stability Control (FSC) provides additional stability and steering precision when driving above 20 km/h on the road. When coming out of a turn, the Fendt Reaction steering system automatically switches to straight-ahead driving. The superimposed steering system VarioActive makes light work of steering: a single turn of the steering wheel is enough for a full steering angle.

Hydraulics

The Fendt 1000 Vario can be customised by upgrading or downgrading. The fully-equipped rear area has all the connections and functions, such as Power Beyond, ISOBUS socket, rear return, PTO and rear power lift.

Simpler rear equipment, e.g. no rear power lift and PTO still offer the complete range of modular hitch systems, which can be exchanged as needed.

The Fendt 1000 Vario provides connections for up to seven control units, six at the rear and one in the front.

With the DCUP couplings, you can couple all hydraulic valves under pressure on both sides. The pressure relief lever permits easy coupling.

The self-closing valve flaps protect against contamination and enable one-handed coupling.

Power lift

The front lift is perfectly integrated into the vehicle.

Using the comfort ballast pickup, front weights can be picked up quickly and easily, even without front linkage.

With the external valve controls, you can actuate the rear linkage, one valve and the PTO directly on the rear mudguard.

For non-European standards, the rear can also be equipped with rub blocks and a quick hitch frame. Optionally, the Fendt 1000 Vario can be fitted with a 60″ track.

JCB’S Quiet Electric Mini Wins Award

The JCB 19C-1 electric mini excavator has been awarded the UK Royal Academy of Engineering’s 2020 MacRobert Award. The MacRobert Award recognizes product innovation.

JCB is today celebrating the news that its electric mini excavator has scooped one of the world’s most prestigious prizes for engineering innovation.

The UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering has today announced that JCB’s ultra-quiet and zero emissions 19C-1E electric mini excavator has won the 2020 MacRobert Award. The MacRobert Award is a prize for innovation that has been presented since 1969 to honor a wide variety of engineering feats, including the CT scanner and Rolls-Royce’s Pegasus engine used in the Harrier jump jet.

JCB faced strong competition for this year’s award from two other shortlisted finalists: the all-electric I-PACE sports utility vehicle from Jaguar Land Rover and ecoSMRT® liquid natural gas reliquification technology from Babcock’s LGE business.

“To win one of the world’s most respected engineering prizes is an outstanding endorsement for JCB’s electrification team, who have achieved so much in applying a science which was new to our business. JCB’s electric mini excavator will contribute to a zero carbon future and it’s a huge honor for our contribution to be recognized in this way.”

Professor Sir Richard Friend FREng FRS, Chair of the Royal Academy of Engineering MacRobert Award judging panel, said:

“JCB’s electric digger is a huge engineering achievement. The team has developed all parts of the electric propulsion system to deliver system performance that matches real customer requirements. This is a huge achievement in itself, but the additional benefits of zero exhaust emissions and much lower noise has lifted the 19C-1E excavator to a new level.”

The 19C-1E excavator is the world’s first volume-produced fully electric mini excavator and with it, JCB has shown it is possible to make powerful construction machinery without an internal combustion engine. Hundreds of the machines have been sold and so far they have saved the equivalent of 33,290 lbs in CO2 emissions across 5,616 hours of work.

As well as significantly reducing carbon emissions, the electric mini excavator has zero exhaust emissions and very low noise levels. This combination makes it much better suited than traditional construction equipment for operating inside buildings or in areas where noise must be kept to a minimum, for example near hospitals and schools and in cities where night shift work is often necessary.

Great Plains Manufacturing Selects Pangborn for Company-Wide Initiative to Optimize Assembly Process

Senior leaders at Great Plains Manufacturing, one of the foremost manufacturers of agricultural implements in the U.S., recognized that its product assembly process could be more efficient, which would increase speed-to-market and result in additional value to its customers, dealers, and the bottom line.

Pangborn‘s Vertical Descaling Machine (Model ES-1848) was integrated into Great Plains‘ existing production lines to improve its current assembly process, and address the long-term goal to proactively manage this process in the future.

Challenge

Great Plains Manufacturing is one of the foremost manufacturers of agricultural implements in the U.S., as well as a leading producer of dirt working, turf maintenance, material handling, and landscaping equipment in North America. The demand for its products is high, and they have an extensive range of steel products. Senior leaders at Great Plains recognized that its product assembly process could be more efficient, which would increase speed-to-market and result in additional value to its customers, dealers, and the bottom line.

To optimize the assembly process, one of the obstacles they needed to overcome was the rigorous, time-intensive cleaning, descaling, and preparation of the steel components of its products before painting and assembly. A cross-functional team of Great Plains’ engineers, supervisors, and management personnel were tasked with researching and identifying potential partners and solutions to address these challenges in its assembly process. The solution selected would be installed in two of its plants.

Solution

This was a company-wide initiative for Great Plains, and the selection committee spent approximately eighteen (18) months conducting research. Key decision criteria influencing Great Plains’ selection process were production rate, line speed, maintenance/ operating costs, and the service and support they could expect to receive – including readily available parts. The Great Plains team visited several of Pangborn’s customers. They were impressed by Pangborn’s high-performing equipment, the total cost of ownership, and the fact that Pangborn machines have a reputation of being easy to maintain and operate, are safe, reliable, and durable.

Pangborn’s sales and engineering teams conducted a thorough audit of Great Plains’ facilities, ensuring that they understood the customer’s current needs, as well as its future requirements. This was especially important because Great Plains was expanding its product line and its customers were requesting that any future equipment maintain or enhance the company’s high-quality paint finish which is resistant to weathering and corrosion typically found on materials, machines, and equipment being used outdoors. After evaluating the data and insights gained during the audit, Pangborn was confident that its Vertical Descaling Machine (Model ES-1848) could be easily integrated into Great Plains’ existing production lines, would improve its current assembly process, and it would address the long-term goal to proactively manage this process in the future.

Pangborn’s Vertical Descaling Machine would provide Great Plains with faster production time and maximum blast coverage for a continuous flow of work pieces. Designed for maximum flexibility, the ES-1848 would easily accommodate the extensive range of Great Plains’ steel products. The ES-1848 would also give Great Plains the proper surface for a high-quality paint finish and result in the clean, rust- and scale-free surface that is a fundamental requirement for anti-corrosion and weathering.

Pangborn’s ES-1848 was installed in its largest tillage plant located in Ellsworth, Kansas, in the first quarter of 2019. The second ES-1848 was installed during the fall of 2019 in Abilene, Kansas. The implementation process went as planned with minimal disruption to the manufacturing processes.
