Launched in 1998 by Italian magazine ‘Trattori’, the prestigious annual TOTY awards recognize the latest innovations throughout the international tractor sector.

mtu 6R 1000, 6R 1100, 6R 1300, and 6R 1500 are delegated assembly units based on Daimler’s OM 93x and OM 47x utility vehicle engines and cover power outputs from 180 – 480 kW. They also meet the requirements of the EU-Stage V emissions standard in place since 2019.

“We laid the foundations for continuing our cooperation in the intensive field tests we performed for certification, which primarily took place at Claas. By coordinating with each other closely from a very early stage, we improved our engine platforms, also adding a diesel particulate filter to the SCR system to ensure compliance with the strict emission limits,”

explained Stefan Rudert, Director C&I and Agriculture Business at Rolls-Royce business unit Power Systems.

In addition to EU-Stage V, the engines can be optionally purchased with dual certification for compliance with the Tier 4 final standard valid in the US and Canada.

“That gives vehicle manufacturers greater flexibility in sales and helps purchasers on the secondary market. We’re also working on solutions that will enable us to break into other international markets with Claas using our existing engine platforms,”

said Rudert.

Around half of the grain-harvesting machines built by Claas are powered by mtu engines. Series 1000 to 1500 engines were designed in collaboration with Daimler for off-highway purposes and modified for agricultural applications.

John Deere announce it has made an equity investment in ClearFlame Engine Technologies, a growing start-up dedicated to the development of clean engine technology. ClearFlame’s solution enables low-carbon fuels like ethanol to be easily integrated into compression ignition engines, offering a more sustainable solution without compromising engine performance.

John Deere’s investment is in line with its strategic vision to accelerate and lead the industry in low and zero-carbon powertrain technology. John Deere will also supply an engine to use in conceptual testing, which will help validate the technology currently under development by ClearFlame.

Using ethanol in place of petroleum diesel fuel in diesel engines significantly reduces carbon emissions and air quality emissions. In addition, ethanol is widely available and can offer a high-efficiency, liquid alternative fuel option.

John Deere understands the importance of renewable fuel options and is committed to exploring new solutions. “Compression ignition engines have a long life ahead — in terms of both the current source of diesel and a wide variety of alternative fuel types. John Deere already offers biomass-based diesel compatibility on our engines. These investments are the right thing to do for environmental, economic, and rural-development benefits,”

The EESTF, scheduled to meet monthly through the end of 2022, has tasked itself with educating industry professionals on potential future emission requirements, the changes to power trains and the impact that will have on equipment design, and cost implications. In addition, the task force may help others understand that there may be a different technology solution for different applications/machine types.

“I look forward to leading this task force and representing the AEM membership’s interests as we work to understand, influence, and effectively communicate the industry’s emissions strategy,”

said David Nicoll, product manager, Industrial Power Systems Division at Caterpillar and EESTF Chair.  

The EESTF’s initial activities serve to help its members fully understand where regulations currently sit around the world, with a specific focus on the emissions-related rulemakings from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The group discussed the need to level-set the task force not only on next-generation emissions but also on decarbonization. There are also several opportunities for collaboration with other industry associations, which may provide additional information and discussion. 

Recent discussions have focused on how best to comply with newly introduced emissions regulations, and how these rules may disrupt investments and the use of resources in the future. Topics included: 

• Decarbonization 
• Powertrain changes 
• Electrification 
• New features or design changes 

Prior to the task force determining their desired outcomes, more discussions, and a better understanding of implications require further study. As a next step, the committee decided to collect information on the current state of engine emissions regulatory activity, along with potential obstacles and risks related to their implementation.  

Including alignment with AEM’s Regulatory Affairs Working Group, the EESTF will also provide guidance to the newly formed Alternative Power Technical Committee (APTC). The APTC will provide a centralized discussion and collection point for the technical aspects of global regulations and standards related to the adoption of non-diesel and non-gasoline technologies. The group will attempt to: 

• Identify new and developing technologies 
• Determine potential industry-focused applications 
• Monitor compliance obstacles, and 
• Address regulatory and standards challenges

AGCO introduces the Fendt 500 Vario Gen3 Series mid-range tractors, which will now include the FendtONE cab and operator station. The Fendt 500 Vario Gen3 Series of highly adaptable, powerful, and productive tractors is available in four models, with engine horsepower ranging from 124 to 163 (107-137 PTO). These tractors are the perfect size for completing chores on livestock and dairy operations, as well as haying, mowing, and light fieldwork.

The innovative FendtONE cab provides a streamlined and efficient work environment, allowing users to customize the operation of the tractor and implements based on their preferences and the work that needs to be done.

The FendtONE cab features up to three large, easy-to-read display screens that show all tractor functions and can store settings for jobs the operator uses most. From the FendtONE cab, operators can customize their tractors to easily move between jobs. For example, they can adapt loader functions to make quick work of moving and stacking big bales and cleaning livestock pens, or they can switch the tractor from mowing to raking to baling – with implement settings already customized and saved in the tractor for each of those jobs.

FendtONE: designed for operator convenience

FendtONE makes it easy for operators to customize their tractors and to create user profiles to save their settings. The display areas can be personalized for each driver, and the workstation includes several assignable buttons that operators can program to control specific tractor or job-based implement functions.

“The philosophy behind the FendtONE cab is in its simple design and intuitive features. Fendt has delivered technology that is easy to use with the integration of all the tractor functions in one touchscreen,”

says David Soliday, AGCO senior tactical marketing manager for tractors.

The nearly limitless customization of the Fendt 500 Gen3 Series tractor can be accomplished with the 12-inch LED touchscreen display that connects the operator to all the tractor functions. The touchscreen is mounted on the right-hand FendtONE armrest.

To activate the FendtONE touchscreen, the user presses the launchpad button, located near the push dial. This button functions as the ‘home button on a smartphone and give the operator access to the digital displays for all machine functions. From there, it’s easy to navigate to the guidance system, hydraulics, service and diagnostics, and more. The launchpad also controls other tractor systems including the air conditioning, in-cab entertainment, and the communications system, as well as side-mirror adjustments.

An optional 12-inch display recessed into the roof liner can be pulled down when needed. The two displays are linked and synchronized, providing data in unison, allowing the operator to view up to 12 user-selected panels of information across the two displays. A 10-inch digital dashboard-mounted behind the steering column enables operators to monitor real-time tractor conditions, including RPMs, speed, fuel level, and tractor status.

The controls for the tractor, hitch, and implements are now centrally located at the operator’s fingertips. The ergonomically designed armrest includes color-coded control buttons, a multi-function joystick, 3L joystick, and a push dial controller, all within close reach for greater operator safety and control of the tractor and implements.

“The button controls are color-coded to match their functions, which also appear on the displays in the same color. This makes it easy for operators to quickly associate the colors with specific tasks and functions, so they perform jobs quickly, accurately and with less chance for error,”

Soliday says.

The multifunction joystick controls tractor speed and direction, hydraulic valve operation, powertrain functions, TI Headland, and ISOBUS functions. It includes freely assignable buttons that can be programmed based on the job. The 3L joystick controls front loader operations, hydraulic controls, and ISOBUS controls.

The ideal front-loader tractor

The Fendt 500 Vario Gen3 Series is ideal for livestock producers who need tractors that are versatile and easy to operate. They are ideal for loader work, haymaking, hauling, and towing. And the added live, third-function loader operation, controlled by the 3L joystick, gives customers the ability to use up to three functions at the same time with their Fendt Cargo or CargoProfi front loader, making these tractors even more useful around the entire farming operation.

“The 500 Gen3 Series is the perfect tractor for livestock and dairy producers looking for a mid-range, innovative and reliable tractor. Fendt added the live third valve to the front loader specifically to make daily chores easier. With the live third function, operators can raise or lower the bucket and tilt it at the same time as they’re opening the grapple on the bucket,”

Soliday says.

Fendt technology simplifies chore work

Working in tandem with the Fendt 500 Vario tractors, the Fendt CargoProfi Loader offers the latest in smart technology features. It includes intelligent built-ins like the memo function, which saves the position settings for loader arms and attachments, as well as the measure-and-tilting sensor systems, which make repetitive jobs easier to complete. Two pressure sensors in the crossbeam measure and track loader weight. The CargoProfi also has a shaking function to empty the bucket completely.

Continuing the Fendt tradition of offering more horsepower in smaller packages, the Fendt 500 Vario Gen3 Series transitions easily from front loader work on the farm to fieldwork. The four models in the 500 Vario Series ‒ 512 (124 HP), 513 (133 HP), 514 (150 HP), and 516 (163 HP) ‒ provide an ideal power range for chores around livestock or dairy operations and mid-size grain farms.

The Fendt 500 Vario’s powerful 4-cylinder DEUTZ engine with a 4.04-liter cubic capacity and common rail injection ensures efficient fuel consumption. A selective catalytic reduction (SCR) exhaust after-treatment follows combustion to ensure the tractor meets the latest emission standards. Working seamlessly with the engine is the stepless Fendt Vario continuously variable transmission (CVT), which was pioneered by Fendt. The Vario transmission delivers a smooth, precise road speed up to 31 mph (50 kph) so operators can precisely match the speed required to complete the task at hand.

The Tractor Management System (TMS) helps keep the tractor operating at peak performance by adjusting the engine and transmission, so they work together at an optimum tractor RPM. Less fuel is required because the engine is running at lower RPMs, causing less wear on the engine, and prolonging its life.

The agile Fendt 500 Gen3 Series offers everything that larger Fendt tractors do, including several features that Fendt pioneered, such as a multi-point cab suspension system and full control of all drive functions and hydraulics via the single, multifunction joystick. A new and expanded assembly plant and a logistics center were constructed in record time at the Linnavuori plant, both of which help AGCO Power modernize and streamline its engine manufacturing process.

“Despite a tight schedule and the global COVID-19 pandemic, the investment project has progressed as planned. The investments at the Linnavuori plant enable a more efficient and streamlined production process. Upgrades such as the automated logistics center and state-of-the-art robotics support improved quality, cleanliness, and work ergonomics. In addition, the investment paves way for the launch of production of a new engine family by the end of 2022,”

Part of the investment was a multi-million euro overhaul to the plant’s machining line. Once fully operational, the 100% automated machining line enables flexible manufacturing of components in-house, reducing costs and increasing control over the production process.

“The successful completion of the project makes AGCO Power’s position in the global powertrain market better than ever. The new engine product family that is being developed will serve AGCO brands (Valtra, Fendt, and Massey Ferguson) more effectively and offer future solutions to customers in the off-road machinery market,”

AGCO Power operates globally and manufactures engines at four plants: Linnavuori, Changzhou, China, Mogi das Cruzes, Brazil, and General Rodriguez, Argentina, with an overall capacity of over 100,000 engines per year. In 2022, AGCO Power turns 80 years old, and the company will mark the anniversary with the completion of the plant expansion and the launch of a new, state-of-the-art engine family.

This good news comes following the company’s announcement as a result of Hino Motors’ delay in acquiring the 2021 North American EPA emission certifications for the new engines that are utilized for North America production for select Kobelco excavators and imported cranes. All other Kobelco excavator models that are available in North America will continue production with no interruption of supply (1.7 – 16 metric ton units). Kobelco’s relationship with Hino Motors remains intact on a global basis outside of North America.

Our focus is to not only provide an ample supply of our full line-up of machines with certified engines as soon as possible but to do so in a manner that maintains the Kobelco quality and performance that has been the cornerstone of success for our dealers and our customers,”

Two global market-leading engine manufacturers that already supply Kobelco with mini and mid-range-sized excavator engines have now been contracted to supply the additional engines required for the larger conventional and short radius models that were impacted. Yanmar will supply engines for the SK170, SK210, SK230SR, SK260, and the SK270SR KOBELCO excavator models. In addition, Isuzu will supply engines for the SK300, SK350, SK380SR, SK390, and the SK500 excavator models. Isuzu will also supply engines for the KOBELCO CK 800, CK 850, CK 1100, CK 1200, CK 1600, CK 2000, and CK 2750 crawler cranes. Most of these KOBELCO units will show increased horsepower with the specified Yanmar or Isuzu replacement engines.

Parts for the Kobelco excavators and cranes that are currently operating with Hino engines in North America will remain readily available from Kobelco dealers. All Kobelco excavators and cranes in North America that were either previously manufactured or will be manufactured in 2021 meet the EPA emission requirements and are not affected by this change.
