Our team was happy to take part to Rolls Royce Virtual Event where the new “NetZero@PowerSystems” program was presented. The program aims at reducing greenhouse gas emissions setting out a roadmap for how Rolls-Royce business unit will become carbon neutral by 2050.

Rolls-Royce Power Systems is taking the next step towards a climate-neutral future. By 2030, the Rolls-Royce business unit is to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 35% compared to its 2019 level through the use of new net zero and cero carbon technologies. This near-term target plays a significant role in Rolls-Royce Group’s ambition to achieve net zero by 2050 at the latest.

To accomplish that mission, the role of pioneer goes to Power Systems:

“With ‘Net Zero at Power Systems’, we’re not just taking action to protect the environment. We’re re-aligning our strategy towards eco-friendly energy and propulsion systems. We already see these explicitly as growth opportunities for our business in the coming years,”

says Andreas Schell, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

A key element in achieving these goals is the certification of the most important mtu engine products, which will run on sustainable fuels from as early as 2023 and then be successively brought into use.

“The certification means that the new generation of Series 2000 and 4000 engines, that currently account for 85% of our sales revenues, will be qualified to run on second-generation bio-fuels and on E-fuels,”

explained Dr Otto Preiss, Chief Technology Officer and COO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

The engines are used in a wide variety of applications, for example, in energy supply, commercial shipping, heavy land vehicles, passenger trains and in yachts.

Power Systems is taking a multi-pillar approach to reducing emissions: Besides using sustainable fuels, the Rolls-Royce business unit is also building on new technologies such as CO2-free fuel cell systems. From 2025, these will be used in power generation solutions – from balancing energy for compensating fluctuations in the public grid to continuous power and the provision of emergency power in, for example, hospitals and data centers. On top of that, development engineers are also working on engines powered by hydrogen and methanol as well as on concepts for decentralized Power-to-X systems. Other sustainable solutions such as battery energy storage systems, hybrid propulsion systems for marine and rail applications and microgrids already feature in the Power Systems portfolio for decentralized, environment-friendly power solutions.

Considering the key buying criteria related to fossil fuel (as presented in Figure 3) and assuming an acceptable TCO assessment, availability of bridging technologies, and the specific priorities of the applications, Rolls-Royce Power Systems expects a change in technology split as shown on the right side of Figure 3.

Tackling the biggest sources of emissions first

“To make as big an impact as possible in the fight against climate change, the first priority of Power Systems is to re-align its product portfolio towards sustainability. But this year will also see us setting milestones for gearing our production and value chain to long-term climate neutrality”

explained Dr Otto Preiss.

Figure 4 gives an outlook of the expected relevant technologies needed for the market transformation as Rolls-Royce Power Systems sees it today. Independent of the underlying GHG scenario the figure shows their expectation of the still important role of ICE in the coming years. However, it is clearly competing with the rise of battery and fuel cell technology.

As a specialist for propulsion and energy solutions, Power Systems is thus setting strong milestones with ‘Net Zero at Power Systems’, which follows on from the Rolls-Royce parent company’s ‘Pathway to Net Zero’ programme. In total, the Power Systems products sold in 2019, the year before the pandemic, will generate some 109 million tons of greenhouse gases over their service life in the field – almost double that emitted by the Greater London region every year.

“That means that when it comes to lowering emissions, we have a lot of leverage. But the onus is on policy-makers as well to put in place stable framework conditions for sustainable energy solutions in the areas of industry in which we operate, thereby providing clear incentives to participate in the changeover to sustainable products”

said CEO Andreas Schell.

The move towards sustainability began at Rolls-Royce Power Systems some time ago. ‘Net Zero at Power Systems’ is in fact a further development of the ‘Green & Hightech programme’ and as such forms an integral part of the overarching corporate strategy that has been driving the transformation into a provider of integrated sustainable solutions for energy and propulsion since 2015.

Solectrac, Inc., located in Northern California, has developed 100% battery powered, all electric tractors for agriculture and recreational applications.

Their tractors allow farmers around the world to power their tractors by using the sun, wind, and other clean renewable sources of energy. Founder and CEO Stephen Heckeroth said that Solectrac is on its way to becoming the standard of electric agricultural and utility equipment around the globe.

Heckeroth has dedicated his life to finding alternatives to burning fossil fuels. He received a degree in Architecture and for 25 years designed and built solar homes. Then in 1990, he shifted his focus to designing and building electric vehicles.

“After designing and building several electric tractors for farmers, I received a commission to build an experimental electric tractor for Ford/New Holland in 1995,”

Heckeroth said.

“Then in 1996, I was commissioned by a Japanese company (EFRIG) to build an electric tractor that could be used to explode land mines left behind after wars.”

He said that these early electric tractor designs produced new innovations – steer by wire, zero radius steering, remote control operation, the use of wheel motors, on board inverter/chargers for mobile AC power, motors mounted on implements to replace dangerous PTO’s and the first ever use of linear actuators on a full function electric tractor.

So, with decades of experience under his belt and fueled by the mission to make a positive difference in the world, Heckeroth founded Solectrac LLC in 2012, with the goal of taking small farm electric tractors into commercial production.

The company grew out Heckeroth’s commitment to providing an alternative to fossil fuels. Now, Solectrac is the only company offering commercial sales of quiet, zero emission Electric Tractors in the U.S.

The electric motors used in Solectrac tractors are more than 90% efficient, have only one moving part, can go for decades without maintenance, produce maximum torque throughout the slow operating speeds of tractors and produce no pollution or Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.

“Solectrac offers the eUtility electric tractor that can do the work of any 2WD, 40 HP diesel tractor on the market,”

Heckeroth said.

The company distributes Farmtrac Compact Electric Tractor (CET) that can do the work of any 4WD, 30 HP diesel tractor and has two more models under development. The 2WD, 30 HP eFarmer is designed for row crop farming and the 4WD, 70 HP e70N designed for vineyard, orchards and other high HP utility applications.

The company has an assembly facility and office on the northern California coast and is leasing a new facility in Santa Rosa.

Heckeroth said that members of Soletrac’s team are dedicated professionals with diverse backgrounds and skills in design, manufacturing, business management, communications, sales and marketing.

“Our team comprised of hard-working, talented individuals who have logged in thousands of hours creating an efficient, simple company dedicated to making sure everything Soletrac produces brings real, long-term value and increased productivity and environmental quality to their customers,”

Heckeroth said.

He added that the company’s biggest challenge, though, is to get the word out that electric tractors are available and that their performance is equal to or better than diesel tractors.

“I took about 20 years for electric cars to take hold in society,”

Heckeroth said.

“I hope that electric tractors will be accepted more quickly.”

Another challenge is range and run time of the battery however, Solectrac solved that challenge with its patented exchangeable battery packs, which can be used to extend run time or for back-up power. Their technology allows you to swap depleted batteries for charged batteries easier and more quickly than changing an implement.

Soletrac’s other innovations include the use of linear actuators, which are more efficient and have no toxic fluids, instead of hydraulics for lifting the 3-point hitches. Their eFarmer model has 3 hitches to allow three operations in one pass thereby greatly improving efficiency. It also is designed to allow uninterrupted visibility for cultivating row crops.

Despite challenges, the Soletrac team has received national and international recognition for its designs.

The company has received large grants from the US Indian Science and Technology Fund, which resulted in the design of the eFarmer electric tractor, and the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Heckeroth said that the grants offered his team the chance to develop, test and improve the design of needed components that are key to successful commercial production.

In 2014, Solectrac was awarded a 3-year research and development grant by the India-US Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF). With the final prototype produced, Solectrac won a second grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to commercialize the production of all-electric tractors.

Recently, Solectrac was a finalist at Food Funded, an Entrepreneurship and Investor Fair and received the Escorts 2019 Innovation Award.

Since 2019, Solectrac has been a California Benefit Corporation and a certified B Corp, which means that social and environmental impacts are considered and tracked in Solectrac’s decision-making process.

“As the company grows, we will be creating needed employment opportunities in assembly, sales, and administration,”

Heckeroth said.

“We have also provided education on how to farm more sustainably by showing and demonstrating electric tractors at many ag schools, conferences and expos as well as individual farms.”

He said that supporting the local community is truly one of the best ways to affect positive change.

“Over the years, I have been involved in my local community, from serving as a member of the School Board and County Planning Commission to hosting a show on renewable energy on KZYX public radio in Northern California.”

His favorite part of working in the agriculture industry and with farmers are the many opportunities to be out in nature and watching the many miracles in the interaction between soil, water, air and sun that make plants grow and animals thrive.

“We joined the Farm Bureau because we have a shared mission of producing agricultural products while innovating new, profitable and sustainable farming methods,”

Heckeroth said.

“We want to be an active participant with the groups we support and we appreciate the Farm Bureau, its goals and the work it does for its members.”

He said that his goal is to help lead the agricultural community toward energy independence by producing electric tractors charged by on site clean renewable energy.

To gain further support for this mission, Solectrac launched its equity crowd funding campaign in May.

“We hope to fund the expansion of production in our assembly center in Santa Rosa, as well as finalize our eFarmer model and start development of a 70 HP equivalent electric tractor,”

Heckeroth said.

The Ted robot, recognised as an efficient, innovative weeding solution by many wine-growers, is continuing its fine-tuning. The premier viticulture robot is continuing to make a name for itself as its new version is set to work for Hennessy & Bernard Magrez, long-time partners of the manufacturer.

Developed three years ago by Naïo Technologies, a pioneering company in agricultural robotics, Ted is the first autonomous, 100% electric high-clearance tool dedicated to the mechanical weeding of vines. The robot has quickly generated strong interest in the wine-growing sector, which is looking very closely at this solution.

More than twenty Teds are now working in various vineyards. This high-clearance tool, capable of working autonomously among the vines, responds to the sector’s current needs. Ted limits soil compaction and thanks to its mechanical weeding will allow the elimination of allow chemical weedkillers, while still remaining environmentally-friendly thanks to its entirely electric operation.

The robot is therefore continuing to improve in the hands of its wine-growing experts in terms of reliability, autonomy and safety.

“The Bernard Magrez Estate is convinced that robotisation will play a fundamental role in the mechanical maintenance of the land over the next few decades. Electrical power, the absence of greenhouse gas emissions and noise pollution are the main focus of our commitment to the environment. In this, we have developed a 4-year partnership with Naïo Technologies to perfect a robot capable of carrying out the majority of the soil maintenance work among the vines”

highlights Arnaud Delaherche, R&D Manager of the Bernard Magrez Estate.

This confidence is reinforced by a common desire to promote an innovative, technological solution already in existence and to prepare it for tomorrow: the Ted robot.

“Within the context of its commitments on sustainable wine growing and to support its partner wine producers, the Hennessy company is testing many different solutions in its vineyards to promote more virtuous wine growing. The R&D partnership project with Naïo Technologies is fully compatible with this approach. The development of the Ted robot is therefore an innovative alternative to the use of weedkillers. Its light weight and adaptability, as well as its electrical operation, are assets in view of the development of sustainable wine growing in the Charente region,”

specifies Mathilde Boisseau, Hennessy Vine and Wine Manager.

From July onwards, they will be the first ones to test the new version of the Ted robot before its official launch planned for September.

On July 19, 2018, an EF3 tornado hit the Vermeer Mile, leaving behind a path of destruction – leaving the Vermeer team down, but not out. Part of the rubble left behind was the Eco Center – a hub where hazardous waste generated at Vermeer is used in alternative ways, by reprocessing or burning for fuel consumption.

“While we are a global company, the Eco Center is a tremendous example of taking our environmental responsibility seriously in our local community. I’m proud of the team who works in the Eco Center and what they do to make a real impact on the world around us.”

said President and CEO Jason Andringa.

Today, rated with the highest safety classifications, the new and improved Eco Center is open and complete with a built-in grounding grid, humidity-controlled air to reduce the risk of static discharge and an automatic flammable vapor-sensing system that monitors each of the air handling systems to react to different flammable vapor concentrations.

Solvents are key to effectively clean paint line and paint guns. In a year, the Eco Center collects and recycles 100 percent of the solvent Vermeer uses, which is more than 60,000 gallons. At Vermeer, all used oil is collected and recycled or used as an alternative energy source.

Wood waste on campus comes from various sources – primarily the pallets and crates that bring steel, engines and other high-quality components to be used in the manufacturing process. The waste that can be reused into pallets is used as is, which amounts to 40,000 pallets a year. What can’t be reused as a pallet is grinded by an HG4000 horizontal grinder into mulch.

Yellow iron starts as raw steel before hitting machining centers, lasers and cutters. Scraps and metal dust from these processes are collected. And because Vermeer recycles these 40 million pounds of scrap metal each year, it is one of the largest manufacturing recycling companies in Iowa.

Electronic waste, or e-waste, is the fastest growing area of waste. It accounts for 40% of lead and 75% of heavy metals that are found in landfills that can negatively impact our water systems. At Vermeer, they collect all e-waste and partner with electronic recyclers that disassemble and reuse the metals and potentially toxic materials while maintaining information and data security.

In addition to recycling efforts, Vermeer team is also responsible for the important task of safely handling our hazardous materials, such as chemicals. Inside Eco Center is a chemical warehouse. All hazardous chemicals are secured with additional safety features like intrinsically safe wiring, an emergency spill system and a similar, but more sensitive, flammable vapor sensor system.

Nearby, their solar field, installed with Vermeer equipment, captures sunlight and distributes this green energy to their facilities. What isn’t used onsite is fed to their community’s grid.

EHS Manager Stephen Kelly said:

“I am so proud to be part of this talented, motivated and fun team dedicated to making a positive impact for our internal Vermeer customers, while proactively working to minimize our environmental footprint as an organization.”
