Engine manufacturer Deutz has joined the eFuel Alliance, and in doing so taken another important step forward in its sustainability strategy. The organization represents the interests of companies involved in producing synthetic fuels from renewable energies on an industrial scale. Its mission is to drive forward the production of e-fuels as an alternative to conventional fuels, help them to become broadly accepted, and thus contribute to the protection of the climate. Deutz will mainly represent the off-highway segment in the initiative.

“We are at the vanguard of a greener transport sector. Deutz believes that e-fuels provide a sensible alternative, alongside electric drives and hydrogen engines, that will help to achieve the Paris climate targets. For exactly this reason, we commit ourselves to play an active role in the eFuel Alliance,”

says Dr. Frank Hiller, CEO of Deutz AG.

Monika Griefahn, spokeswoman for the eFuel Alliance, adds:

“We are delighted to be able to welcome DEUTZ AG as a partner in our network. The addition of the SDAX-listed, Cologne-based company brings the number of eFuel Alliance members to 150.”

E-fuels are synthetic fuels that are made on a renewable basis from water and carbon dioxide (CO2). The type of fuel used by an engine determines its emissions characteristics. By switching to biofuels or gas, the amount of pollutants and CO2 that the engine emits can be dramatically reduced, even to the point of making it fully carbon neutral.

Because of the heavy-duty nature of the applications and the long hours they are in use, commercial vehicles, tractors, and construction equipment need fuel with a high energy density and rapid refueling. This is where e-fuels have a clear und advantage over purely electric drives. Not only are they easy to transport, but refueling can be done quickly using the existing, globally available infrastructure.

In August 2021, Deutz approved its entire diesel engine portfolio for use with paraffinic fuels such as e-fuels. This means that alternative fuels can now also be used to run Deutz engines that meet the EU Stage V emissions standard. At the same time, Deutz has approved the majority of its latest-generation engines, particularly in the sub-4 liter and above-8 liter range, for biodiesel blends of up to 30 percent. The use of these alternative fuels significantly reduces the carbon footprint of Deutz’s engines and raises the prospect of running engines on a carbon-neutral basis in the future.

Also in August, Deutz unveiled its first purely hydrogen-powered engine for off-highway applications, paving the way for zero-emission operation in this segment. The six-cylinder engine is set to go into series production in 2024.

Kverneland has integrated the well-known a-drill onto the e-drill power-harrow mounted seed drill. This extra seeder with a separate hopper and metering device will allow for the application of an additional type of seeds or fertilizer, extending the scope of application of the e-drill maxi plus even further.

Sustainable and efficient

There are good reasons to promote the establishment of additional crops or to apply extra nutrients whilst seeding. An additional crop will suppress weed growth but not compete with the leading crop. The extra crop catches the mineral nitrogen in the soil, as well as air nitrogen when mixing with leguminous plants, transforming it into organic nitrogen. Thus, nitrogen will still be available for the next crops. Fertilizers are applied with precision to support plant growth, specifically during youth development avoiding its wash-out into groundwater

All this will be a major contribution to sustainable farming by encouraging root development, reducing the risk of erosion, and increasing biodiversity and humus content. Sustainability will protect farmers’ most valuable asset: the soil. Utmost efficiency and cost-saving are achieved by the combined application of various types of seeds and/or fertilizer all in one pass.

Wide scope of application

There is a wide scope of application and numerous possible variations for this integrated seed drill:

Already the e-drill maxi plus, as the combined grain and fertilizer model of the power harrow mounted seed drill, is equipped with a divided hopper with an adjustable ratio of 60:40, 70:30, or 100:0 and two independently working metering devices.

By integrating the a-drill, an additional extra seeder comes into play and offers a multiple choice of combinations: Two types of material are precisely deposited by the CX-II double-entry colter (2 distribution heads) on the e-drill maxi plus; whereas the third type of material is applied via the baffle plate from the integrated a-drill into the soil flow of the following harrow:

3 types of material in one pass: 1 type of seed (e.g. wheat/barley) plus fertilizer in the sowing rows plus slug pellets via the following harrow

3 types of material in one pass: 1 type of seed (e.g. wheat/barley) plus fertilizer in the sowing row plus 1 type of seed (e.g. clover) via the following harrow

3 types of material in one pass: 2 types of seed in different sowing rows (e.g. beans & rapeseed) plus slug pellets via the following harrow

3 types of material in one pass: 2 types of seed in the sowing row (e.g. beans & rye) plus 1 sort of seed (e.g. clover) via the following harrow

Flexible adjustments

The a-drill has 8 outputs which will spread the flow of seeds or fertilizer by the baffle plate uniformly into the soil flow of the following harrow over the entire working width.

The a-drill is delivered with different types of rotors: for small seeds (rape, mustard, cabbage, clover, etc.), medium rotors for seeds like vetch, grass, or sunflowers, and for large seeds (peas, horse beans, etc.) or fertilizer. The agitator placed above the rotor ensures a steady stream of seeds. A brush, located at the base of the rotor, will regulate the flow and improve the setting accuracy. Up to 8 different rotors are available for fine, medium, and large-sized seeds.
