The ‘Green’ Edition of EIMA International 2021

The great agricultural machinery exhibition is confirmed for next October, and will focus on the issues of sustainability and digitalisation that are at the heart of the European political agenda.

Over 1,500 manufacturers have already registered for the event, including more than 400 from abroad, with the widest range of technologies to reconcile production needs with environmental protection.

The 2021 edition of EIMA International, scheduled to take place in Bologna from 19 to 23 October, will be more “topical” than ever. In a context that sees the “Green Deal” taking shape in Europe, where ecological transition is a priority for national governments, where digitalisation is a condition for the innovation of production processes, EIMA International will make a contribution of high strategic value. The great exhibition of machinery for agriculture, landscaping and related components will offer the entire lanscape of technologies and electronic devices for the correct use of natural resources and the implementation of eco-sustainable processes.

The exhibition is divided into 14 product sectors and five specialised theme halls, and will feature all those solutions that guarantee environmental compatibility, now a priority in the new EU agricultural policy.

Particular attention will be paid to new models that have won the Technical Innovation Award and especially to those awarded the “Blue” sustainability prize.

Considerable interest may be aroused by the wide range of products exhibited in the “Idrotech” show dedicated to systems for optimising water resources, as well as those on display in the “Digital” show, dedicated to electronic, computer and satellite applications that help control the processing and the scientific management of production factors, achieving the “4.0” model in agriculture. The conversion towards renewable sources is the objective of EIMA “Energy“, which offers mechanization systems for entire bioenergy supply chains. The preservation of organic substance in the soil, the reduction of chemical inputs and the prevention of geological risks will be the subject of numerous conferences and seminars as part of the rich calendar of events scheduled during the exhibition.

“EIMA 2021 will have great impact in terms of technological offerings,”

explains Alessandro Malavolti, president of FederUnacoma, the Italian federation of manufacturing industries that is the direct organizer of the event,

“and it will have considerable influence in terms of political content, helping to promote strategies to guide agriculture towards a green transition. As always, the technology showcase is expected to be very wide-ranging, given that to date 1,500 manufacturers have confirmed their participation, with more than 400 foreign companies. Many more could join in if the restrictions imposed by the health emergency in some countries are lifted. Industries from every country are taking part in EIMA with increasingly sustainable technologies,”

“because the ecological transition is a qualifying element of the European economy, but first and foremost it is a vital necessity for the entire planet.”

New Version of PONSSE Manager Improves Reporting of Machine Chain Productivity

Ponsse Manager 1.7 presents forwarder production reporting, a function highly requested by customers, alongside the system’s other top features.

As a new feature, Ponsse Manager displays the progress of work areas in a separate graph, showing harvester production and forwarder production relative to the total estimated volume of the work area in question.

Printable load certificate

The Ponsse Manager load certificate displays work area identification data and local transportation per storage location, both as sum totals and operator-specific values. The printable load certificate also includes the volume of each load, the assortments delivered, and the distance travelled.

“Forwarder production volumes will be updated in Ponsse Manager reports if the forwarder is equipped with a compatible Ponsse Load Optimizer loader scale or the Opti 4G operator load details feature, which allows operators to enter their roadside deliveries in the Opti 4G system. These features raise machine chain reporting to a whole new level and offer a better overview of total harvesting production”,

Valtra and Elisa Introduce Remote-Controlled Tractor

Valtra and Elisa have joined forces to innovate a 5G solution which enables the remote operation of a tractor with the 5G network and a 360 camera. The solution is the first of its kind in the world.

In March, Valtra and Elisa unveiled a remote-controlled tractor, utilising new-generation 5G network technology. The collaboration was featured at the opening event of the Elisa 5G Showroom. The prototype solution enables the real-time, safe control and operation of a tractor hundreds of kilometres away.

“Radio-controlled tractors have been in use for years, but it’s always meant staying within sight of the machine. 5G revolutionises this, as now a tractor can be driven remotely from anywhere,”

says Mikko Lehikoinen, Vice President, Sales and Marketing Valtra.

“Elisa is a forerunner in 5G technology, both in Finland and internationally. The remote-controlled tractor that’s been developed together with Valtra and introduced at Elisa 5G Showroom has generated a lot of interest. 5G services and solutions are going to bring efficiency and innovative new ways of operating for businesses and people. The remote-controlled tractor is a very real example of this, as the driver no longer needs to physically sit in the cab. We want to build a sustainable future through digitalisation, and developing 5G services is part of making that a reality,”

says Kimmo Pentikäinen, Vice President, Business Development at Elisa.

Remote control to improve safety

The remote control was achieved through an integrated 5G connection and a roof-mounted 360-degree camera. The 5G network enables the remote driver’s VR glasses to receive a 4K view of the environment in real time. The driver can examine the tractor’s surroundings simply by turning their head. The remote control sends its control signal through Elisa’s commercial, high-security 5G network.

“When you drive your tractor and turn its wheels, you need to get immediate feedback to give the feeling of driving. With 5G, the low latency makes this possible”,

says Lehikoinen.

Remote control is a key step towards fully autonomous driving, which could become a reality for many end users within the next decade. Remote control can be utilised for instance to operate driverless tractors in challenging sites or tasks that would be dangerous in manned operations. This makes a tractor an even more versatile solution and tool.

Connect already uses 3G

Valtra has previously piloted remote-controlled tractors with airport operator Finavia.

”We will continue our work in researching and developing remote control solutions. Next we plan to figure out how to adjust picture quality according to each task, and how remote operation could be further enhanced with sensor data useful to the operator,”

says Lehikoinen.

Valtra tractor technologies already supports remote control, which will facilitate the implementation of remote control features. For example, the Valtra Connect telemetry solution which uses the 3G signal is in use in over 3,000 Valtra tractors across the world.
