Ms. Harris is Vice Chairman of Wealth Management and Senior Client Advisor at Morgan Stanley. Over her 30-year career with Morgan Stanley, her experiences include investment banking, equity capital markets, equity private placements, and initial public offerings in a number of industries such as technology, transportation, and the industrial sector.

For more than a decade, Ms. Harris was a senior member of the equity syndicate desk and executed such transactions as initial public offerings for UPS, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Ariba, Redback, the General Motors sub-IPO of Delphi Automotive, and the $3.2 Billion common stock transaction for Immunex Corporation, one of the largest biotechnology common stock transactions in U.S. history.

Low-load cycle performance was estimated with a well-calibrated powertrain simulation tool to accurately capture the low-load system operation and emissions. This system showed a 74% reduction in NOx and a 5% reduction in CO2 compared with today’s clean diesel technologies. In comparison with current engine technologies and modifications to the thermal management techniques, dDSF saved 20% in fuel, validating dDSF as a more fuel-efficient means of reducing NOx.

Cummins and Tula demonstrated the positive dDSF results in a Class 8 truck powered by a Cummins X15 HD engine. The dDSF test results highlight a promising technical advancement for an industry seeking strategies to address future, more stringent NOx emissions regulations for diesel engines.

Tula’s original Dynamic Skip Fire software has been shown to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in gasoline engines and has been in production since 2018 with more than one million vehicles on the road.  dDSF is the Dynamic Skip Fire application for diesel engines.

How the List Works

The companies on the list participated in Ethisphere’s proprietary Ethics Quotient, the World’s Most Ethical Companies assessment process, which included more than 200 questions on culture, environmental and social practices, ethics and compliance activities, governance, diversity, and initiatives to support a strong value chain. The process serves as an operating framework to capture and codify the leading practices of organizations across industries and around the globe.

This year’s question set was expanded to gauge how applicants are adapting and responding to the global health pandemic, environmental, social, and governance factors, safety, equity, and inclusion, and social justice.

Cummins was one of four companies honored in the “Automotive” category. Ethics have been an important part of company culture at Cummins from its founding in 1919 to its 100th anniversary in 2019 and on to today. Cummins employees worldwide are required to comply with the company’s Code of Business Conduct, built around 10 fundamental principles.

Another Recent Honor

The World’s Most Ethical Companies list was one of two recent honors the company received. Earlier this month, Cummins was recognized as one of America’s Best Large Employers of 2021. Forbes magazine worked with Statista, a leading provider of market and consumer data, on the ranking. Statista surveyed 38,000 Americans working for businesses with at least 1,000 employees.

The respondents were asked to rate, on a scale of zero to 10, how likely they’d be to recommend their employer to others. Statista then asked respondents to nominate organizations other than their own, as well as identify organizations they would not recommend to others.

Cummins finished No. 127 overall in the rating, which was led by hospitals and universities. In its category of  “Engineering, Manufacturing,” however, the company finished fifth behind only Brunswick, Trane Technologies, Sherwin-Williams, and Owens-Illinois.

Already a key component of CTT’s product catalog, the Series 800 Turbocharger takes a leap forward and has been revitalized to deliver significant improvements in performance, flow range, temperature capability, and seal robustness.

The Series 800 turbocharger has achieved its best-in-class results by introducing technological advancements like:

For the very first time, Cummins introduces the High-Pressure Ratio Compressor (HPRC) technology on Series 800 Turbocharger. The new Series 800 Holset Turbocharger is available with a thin-walled stainless-steel compressor cover, enabling them to increase capacity without adding to our weight or space claim. This new series of enclosures are pre-designed with 85 dBA or 70 dBA sound attenuation options at 23 feet, offering a unique plug and play solution to fit a diverse range of gas power needs. Compatible with two Cummins generator models in 1100kW and 2000kW power nodes, the CHP enclosures can offer up to 83.4% and 88.6% of total system efficiency respectively.

All-new standard enclosures are built with serviceability in mind, offering ample space around the generator to facilitate servicing, while keeping a compact enclosure design requiring a smaller footprint. A removable intake hood has been added for easier accessibility from the service technicians, and greater access is provided at one side of the enclosure to fill and drain the coolant system. Safety systems providing warnings, the balance of plant alarms, and shutdown notifications have been embedded providing greater control of the site’s operation.

These natural gas enclosure solutions are offered as a fully integrated package including piping, cooling, and wiring requiring minimal power connections during the on-site installation phase. Available with a pad or roof-mounted radiators, these enclosures provide greater flexibility to choose what best fits the site’s needs.

Cummins introduces its latest marine generator at the Genoa International Boat Show

Cummins Inc. gave participants of the Genoa International Boat Show their first look at the new Onan C-Power QSB7E generator for the recreational marine market. The new product is available in both 50 and 60 Hz models, with an output of up to 195 kW.

While reliability may have been the top priority, the QSB7E offers many other benefits that customers will enjoy. From the aluminum sound enclosure to the ease of maintenance with single-side service access, the QSB7E is the perfect companion for a relaxing and worry-free voyage. Boatbuilders will appreciate the engineering attention paid to help ease installation as well. The water-cooled exhaust boasts an impressive space savings of approximately 150 mm thanks to a unique rear-facing configuration. The company’s historic Columbus Engine Plant (CEP) was recognized by Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb for a range of initiatives to save energy, conserve water and reduce waste. The company was also named a 2021 Military Friendly Employer for providing opportunities to veterans and their spouses. Finally, Forbes and Statista named Cummins to its 2nd Annual America’s Best Employers by State list for Indiana.

Governor’s environmental award

CEP was one of six Indiana organizations and government agencies honored for its work on the environment as part of the governor’s annual awards for environmental excellence.

“By using innovative environmental practices, they have reduced waste, saved money, and contributed greatly to environmental protection efforts for Hoosiers,”

Indiana Department of Environmental Management Commissioner Bruno Pigott said of the honorees.

The Cummins plant was specifically recognized for five years of continuous environmental improvement, including an upgrade to more energy-efficient LED lighting in 2017, an energy-saving manufacturing controls project started that same year enabling CEP to convert a continuously running coolant system to on-demand service, and engine test cell improvements saving 3.4 million gallons of water per year in the system to cool engines undergoing testing.

CEP also achieved Zero Waste status under Cummins’ environmental management program, and the plant’s popular Community Recycling Day for residents in the company’s headquarters city of Columbus diverted some 740,000 pounds of material from reaching area landfills.

Military friendly employer

Cummins was also one of 240 employers recently named to the 2021 Military Friendly Employers list for its work in the U.S. to create opportunities for veterans and their spouses both through employment and supplier initiatives.

“Companies that have earned this designation have invested in substantive programs to recruit, retain, and advance veterans within their organizations. To them, hiring veterans isn’t just the right thing to do. It’s good for business.”

said Josh Rosen, who leads the organization that puts the list together.

Employers are evaluated using public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. Established in 2003, the Military Friendly Employers list provides a comprehensive guide to veterans and their families. In addition to Cummins employment efforts for veterans, the company has a very active employee resource group dedicated to veterans, and veterans are also included in Cummins’ supplier diversity initiatives.

The recognition as a Military Friendly Employer follows the company’s designation in July as a Top-Scoring Company on the 2020 Disability Equality Index, a national benchmarking tool that offers businesses an opportunity to evaluate their disability inclusion policies and practices. Companies scoring 80% or higher are recognized as “Best Places to Work for Disability Inclusion.”

Best employers by State 2021

Finally, Cummins was named to the 2nd annual list of America’s Best Employers by State 2021 for the company’s headquarters state of Indiana.

The list is prepared by Forbes magazine and Statista, which specializes in consumer and market data. It is based on an independent survey of more than 80,000 U.S. employees working for companies employing at least 500 people in their U.S. operations. The surveys were administered using a series of online panels selected to get a representative sample.

Cummins is one of 80 top employers on the list for the state, ranking only behind Salesforce in Indiana. Other highly ranked employers include Eli Lilly and Company (third) and the Indiana University School of Medicine (fourth).

As a leading manufacturer of air, fuel and lube filtration products for heavy-duty diesel engines, Cummins began exploring ways to use their filtration production technology to support healthcare providers as they addressed the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the same time, ORNL was searching for ways to scale up production of face masks with equipment used to mass produce precursor material for carbon fiber production at the CFTF.

ORNL’s research team had been working with the inventor of N95 filter media, Dr. Peter Tsai, to develop a novel in-line charging device that could be placed on the precursor production line to electrostatically charge the melt-blown material made of polypropylene or PP. Melt blowing is a nonwoven process that makes microfibers into a fabric by extruding, drawing and scattering a polymer resin with high velocity air and making a randomly deposited sheet of fibrous material applicable for filtration. By electrostatically charging the material with millions of microfibers layered on top of each other, the filter can remove more than 95 percent of submicron particles and viruses like COVID-19.

ORNL’s Merlin Theodore, Director of the CFTF, said:

“We reached our target goal in only a few weeks on pilot scale melt blowing capability at the CFTF and had the capability to produce filter media for 9,000 masks per hour when we connected with Cummins for potential technology transfer and scale up. Cummins was an ideal partner to scale what we had accomplished and helped us produce material that passed all required testing for filter media.”

With a filtration site in Cookeville, Tennessee just a short drive from the CFTF’s Oak Ridge location, Holm said that ORNL was the right fit not only in proximity, but also in research expertise.

Holm said:

“We had the nation’s experts in material science and fiber technology located about an hour from our primary production location. And, as fate would have it, ORNL was already working with the inventor of N95, Dr. Peter Tsai. Their research has made it possible to be where we are today. We can manufacture material that has passed all the required testing for N95 filter media.”

Cummins and ORNL have a long collaborative history, having partnered to develop a method that repairs a diesel engine cylinder head on heavy-duty engines by additive manufacturing and creating a probe to optimize the engine efficiency among other projects.

The filter media project marks the first time Cummins has collaborated with the CFTF at ORNL.

Just two months ago, Cummins had never produced filter media for face masks and today the company has shipped material to multiple customers across the country for the production of millions of masks.

Holm said:

“We knew melt blowing, but we could not have gotten up-to-speed without the interactions with ORNL and Dr. Tsai. Their technical guidance helped us become operational in a short amount of time so that we could meet the demand and supply our customers with material during a time of crisis.”

ORNL’s research team designed and manufactured a custom electrostatic charging device for Cummins at the DOE’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility at ORNL and assisted in the installation of the device on the company’s Cookeville facility production line.

“We’re now looking for opportunities to expand the scope and performance of the materials we’re making, so we can serve even broader needs in the future,”

Holm said. According to CFTF Director Theodore, industry collaborations like this are the reason national lab user facilities exist.
