“The energy in Houston was unlike anything we’ve experienced at Commodity Classic. Our advance registration was about 30% ahead of our record-breaking Orlando show in 2023, so we knew we were going to have a big event for the show’s first time in Houston.”

states Brandon Hunnicutt, a Nebraska farmer, NCGA member, and co-chair of the 2024 Commodity Classic.

“It’s exciting to see Commodity Classic’s attendance grow in recent years.

We were expecting a big crowd in Houston, and we’re looking forward to bringing the show to Denver for the first time in 2025.”

This year’s event had more than 30 educational sessions, two sold-out trade show floors with over 435 exhibitors, and a keynote address by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. The sponsoring commodity associations also held policy meetings. Attendees enjoyed a wide variety of presentations from top farmers and industry leaders, as well as tours of popular Houston attractions. Guests ended the event with a concert by country artist Hardy at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on Saturday, March 2.

John Deere has expanded its 9RX tractor range with three new models: the 9RX 710, 770, and 830. The machines were unveiled at this year’s Commodity Classic show in Houston, TX, along with the launch of Deere’s new S7 Combines.

Image: courtesy of John Deere

Featuring pulling performance, enhanced operator comfort and the latest precision agriculture capabilities, the new 9RX models have a width of less than 3m and are well suited to the European and CIS markets.

The S7 has a new cab, styling and naming as well as integrated advanced precision agriculture features, offering a wide range of the Deere’s technology already tried in the X9 combines.

9RX Tractors

Pulling Performance

The new 9RX models are equipped with the 18-litre JD18X engine, which provides up to 913 maximum horsepower at low specific fuel consumption and up to 4,234 Nm of torque with the top model. Notably, it achieves full Stage V compliance without the need for Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) /AdBlue. The triple hydraulic pump option with a maximum flow rate of up to 636 l/min and the hydraulic Intelligent Power Management (IPM), which provides up to an additional 40 hp if required, deliver enough power even for the largest, hydraulic-driven implements. The new fully-mechanical e21 PowerShift transmission with Efficiency Manager utilizes the high engine performance and torque of the 9RX effortlessly, while the automation familiar from the e23 transmission ensures exceptional driving comfort. Its 21 gears feature close spacing, allowing operators to easily set the appropriate speed for different tasks. The new undercarriages with their larger 1,200 mm diameter drive sprockets come with a wrapping angle of 110° and 7.5 drive lug engagement. The maximum ballasting weight of 38,100 kg ensures that power and torque are effectively transferred to the ground. While the increased horsepower dimensions of the new 9RX require a larger vehicle concept, the minimum ground pressure level remains at 0.58 kg/cm², comparable to the current smaller 9RX models.

Enhanced Operator Comfort

With the new CommandView 4 Plus cab, operators will enjoy significantly improved comfort and visibility, as well as a substantial increase in cab floor space. The new cab suspension, featuring three degrees of freedom, combined with an isolated subframe reduces noise and vibrations. The ActiveCommand Steering (ACS) adjusts steering effort based on ground speed, ensuring easy and precise handling. With only 3.5 turns of the steering wheel from lock-to-lock in the field, and a ratio change to 5 turns lock-to-lock on the road for improved control, the 9RX tractor facilitates operator productivity and comfort. The Fast Fuel System allows to refill the 1,952-litre* diesel tank in fewer than 4 minutes, further enhancing operational efficiency and reducing daily non-productive time to a minimum. In addition, daily maintenance points can be easily accessed from the ground or through the new service catwalk around the cab. The extended hydraulic oil service interval of 4,000 hours and an optional reversible fan further contribute to an increase in uptime.

Latest Precision Agriculture Capabilities

The 9RX tractor features advanced smart farming capabilities, including the 32.5 cm (12.8 inch) high-definition G5Plus CommandCenter and a full integration of John Deere Precision Ag Technology such as Variable Rate Control, 1-Click-Go-AutoSetup, Section Control and full AEF ISOBUS compatibility. Standard features such as JDLink Connectivity, documentation, and DataSync increase overall operating performance. The free John Deere Operations Center serves as a central platform to connect machines, operators, and fields, facilitating data import and cooperation with third parties.

S7 Combines

Harvesting Performance

The new S7 combines are equipped with the latest generation JDX engines. The 9-litre JD9X engine powers the S7 700, whilst the S7 800, S7 850 & S7 900 are powered by the 13.6-litre JD14X. The field-proven John Deere engines deliver strong results across all harvesting conditions. Notably, the JD14X engine with HarvestMotion achieves maximum power at a reduced engine speed of just 2000 RPM. In addition, the new S7 adopts the X9 residue management system to further enhance overall efficiency. The unloading auger for the S7 also comes with the adjustable spout which can be controlled from the cab for easier and more accurate filling of the trailer.

Advanced Harvesting Automation

The S7 combines offer advanced harvesting automation through optional technology packages that include automation solutions such as Harvest Settings Automation, where automatic adjustments of five internal combine settings take place during harvest; based on grain loss, foreign material, and broken grain limits. Also new to the S7 is Predictive Ground Speed Automation. This predictive system senses the crop through several different sources, including satellite biomass maps and live automation camera feedback. The S7 uses this live camera feedback to detect crop height and/or down crop to further adjust the ground speed in real time.

New Cab and Integrated Precision Ag Capabilities

The new cab – the same as in the flagship X9 – features the G5Plus CommandCenter, enabling smart farming functionalities such as AutoTrac, AutoTrac Turn Automation, Documentation, and DataSync. Additionally, a new high-definition corner post display with a user-friendly interface and digital readouts of combine performance enhances the overall operator experience. The integrated StarFire receiver ensures exceptional signal stability and 2.5cm pass-to-pass accuracy. The integrated precision agriculture capabilities are complimented by JDLink, providing two-way connectivity for automatic uploading of crop and machine data to the John Deere Operations Center and for remote monitoring in real-time. This connectivity is essential for maximizing uptime during harvest.

New Styling and Naming

The new styling of the S7 combines emphasizes the family ties with the John Deere flagship X9, for instance the dynamic styling of the side panels of the combine that customers are familiar with from the X9. The new naming style indicates separator technology, model family, overall capacity, and in the future major updates of the series in each model name.

The Agricultural Industry Electronics Foundation (AEF) announced today that its annual North American 2022 Plugfest will take place during the Commodity Classic in New Orleans, March 9th -11th at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. The Plugfest will provide an opportunity for ag equipment software engineers from all over the world to test the compatibility of their ISOBUS products, putting aside competition and working together for the good of the agricultural industry.

ISOBUS is a communication protocol meant to standardize the communication systems on ag equipment from different manufacturers. However, due to its complexity, the ISO 11783 standard has been interpreted by each manufacturer slightly differently. AEF Plugfests began in 2001 to help engineers test products under development, and ensure that manufacturers of tractors, implements and components were interpreting the standard in a compatible way.

The 2022 Plugfest will allow engineers to connect their ISOBUS products together, checking to see if their products can communicate with each other. At the end of the event, all attendees will have new data and a deep understanding of how to improve their products.

“The Plugfest is a bit like ECU speed dating,”

said Andrew Olliver, Vice Chairman, AEF.

“You get a whole bunch of engineers in the room sitting at dozens of tables, and every half an hour, the buzzer goes and a new ISO partner from another company sits down to connect their ISOBUS products to see if they ‘speak the same language.’ It’s a great opportunity for anybody developing an ISOBUS product to see if their product is compatible with the majority of ISOBUS products on the market.”

The partnership between the AEF and the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) facilitated the opportunity for the Plugfest to be held in conjunction with the progressive Commodity Classic agriculture trade show, providing an opportunity for dealers, farmers and manufacturers to see the cooperation that occurs in solving core technology problems affecting the ag industry today, and how working together is the key to creating better solutions.

“The spirit of communication and collaboration that you see at a Plugfest from competitors is really quite extraordinary,”

said Olliver.

“It’s not about sharing company secrets, but about agreeing on a common language, a common standard, a common software so that when our competitive pieces of equipment are plugged together in the field, they deliver what the customer truly wants.”

“Most folks would be surprised to know that competing equipment manufacturers come together year-round to work towards brand compatibility so that their farmer customers’ operations can run more smoothly and efficiently,”

said Anita Sennett, AEF Secretary and AEM Senior Director of Agriculture.

“Plugfest is the culmination of those efforts, and AEM is pleased to help provide the opportunity for farmers and dealers to see the manufacturers in action and have a dialogue with some of the engineers while at Commodity Classic.”

The Plugfest is a biannual event held in the United States and Europe to test the protocol defined in the ISO 11783 standard. The event attracts hundreds of attendees and participants. AEF member companies typically attending Plugfest include AGCO, Case IH, CLAAS, John Deere, New Holland and SAME DEUTZ-FAHR, among others.

Dealers, farmers and other show attendees may peek behind the curtain to see the industry’s cooperative spirit at work finding solutions to solve their biggest tech problems. For a tour of the New Orleans Plugfest, please contact america@aef-online.org for available dates and times.
