John Deere is now offering customers JDLink connectivity service at no additional charge, making it easy for customers to connect machines and to stay connected. The change allows customers to quickly activate the JDLink connectivity service and manage their connected machines within their John Deere Operations Center account, either on the web or the mobile app. Connectivity subscriptions or renewals are no longer required so customers can simply activate the service and leave it on.

Starting July 14, after logging into Operations Center, customers will be prompted and asked if they want to activate the service. After completing a few easy steps, JDLink connectivity service will be enabled to provide simple, seamless, continuous wireless service and make it possible for customers to monitor their machines and their farms anytime from anywhere.

An available automatic enrollment feature means customers no longer need to worry about machine connections; future purchases of equipment built with JDLink mobile telematics gateways (MTGs) can be automatically enrolled.

JDLink connectivity provides customers a single level of service that includes machine and agronomic data sharing and all the features available within the Operations Center.

“This change enables customers to unlock the full value from Connected Support and precision ag technology on their farm,”

Jennifer Badding, manager, precision ag for John Deere said.

Customers with existing JDLink subscription service agreements can allow them to remain in place until they expire. However, customers can convert existing subscriptions to the new connectivity service at any time, at no additional charge.

“Previously for each machine, customers had to choose the right subscription, timeframe, and price. Activations took many steps and each subscription renewal had to be separately managed. Because of the extra steps required, some customers let their subscriptions lapse or they passed on the opportunity to connect their machines. As a result, these customers have been missing out on the value of Connected Support and precision agriculture,”

Badding said.

As farm sizes continue to grow, Badding said farmers are finding it increasingly difficult to hire the skilled labor they need. In addition, more farmers are remotely managing their operations and depend on being connected to make timely adjustments when needed.

“Connectivity is critical for today’s farms and no other company offers better agronomic and machine connectivity than John Deere. Linking customers to their work, results, teams, advisors, equipment, dealer, and to John Deere is important, and we’re making connectivity simple. This way customers can focus on their farms with less worry about connecting several different machines or managing multiple subscriptions,”

Badding continued.

Specific services, features, and options available to customers may vary depending on their location and the machines.

“Electric Island” planned to feature charging for commercial electric vehicles up to four times the speed of today’s chargers, energy storage, and generation and technology showcase

Portland General Electric and Daimler Trucks North America announced the co-development of “Electric Island,” a large public charging site for medium- and heavy-duty electric commercial vehicles expected to be the first of its kind in the United States. Electric Island will help accelerate the development, testing, and deployment of zero-emissions (tank-to-wheel) commercial vehicles.

The site is under construction now near DTNA headquarters in Portland and is designed to support up to nine vehicle charging stations with charging levels of up to greater than one megawatt by the spring of 2021. Electric Island will provide DTNA, PGE, and the public the opportunity to charge light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicles. Plans for more chargers, on-site energy storage, solar power generation, and a product and technology showcase building are currently being finalized.

Electric Island aims to address the intersection of vehicles and the grid, creating new opportunities for future EV drivers and utility customers. Powered by DTNA’s enrollment in PGE’s Green Future Impact renewable energy program, the site will be greenhouse gas emissions-free, including all vehicle charging.

Roger Nielsen, president, and CEO of DTNA said,

“In cooperation with PGE, and with the plan to expand electric vehicle charging right here in Portland to support not only our EV charging needs but those of other drivers in the area, we are paving the way to a brighter, cleaner CO₂-neutral future. As the largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles, we can accelerate this shift and are excited to address, holistically, the complete EV ecosystem. Daimler Trucks has made Portland our home for the past 73 years and having been born and raised in Oregon, I am incredibly proud to help make Swan Island an Electric Island.”

Maria Pope, president, and CEO of PGE said,

“Oregon’s transportation future is electric, and with global leaders like Daimler Trucks North America right here in Portland, we have the opportunity to accelerate a clean energy transition. We are excited to launch this cutting-edge partnership with DTNA, demonstrating what is possible when utilities and the automotive industry collaborate and innovate.”

Rendering of the Electric Island project located near DTNA headquarters on Swan Island in Portland.

Electric Island is designed to inform both DTNA’s work in commercial electric vehicle development and PGE’s work in meeting customer charging needs. The project will inform each company’s efforts by studying the future of heavy-duty charging, including:

• Use of vehicle chargers featuring power delivery of up to over one megawatt (over 4 times faster than today’s fastest light-duty vehicle chargers), enabling PGE and DTNA to develop best practices for cost-effective future deployments;

• Integration of heavy-duty charging technology into PGE’s Smart Grid, such as vehicle-to-grid technologies, second-life use of Daimler’s battery packs, and onsite energy generation; and

• Testing information technology opportunities like fleet and energy management by captive solutions and services.

Although the global pandemic and the general uncertainty have deeply marked it’s 2020, Faber-Com’s forecasts regarding its end-of-year results remain positive. For sure, the current situation has represented an important challenge to be addressed, but that hasn’t affected in any way the company’s commitment to the search for innovative, customized solutions and to following a growing path together with its partners.
