The AE50 is an awards program that recognizes the top product advancements in agriculture, food, and biological systems for the year. Last March, John Deere hosted one of its largest product launches. One of the award-winning innovations introduced was See & Spray Select, a factory-installed and machine-integrated solution that enables farmers to spot spray of weeds on fallow ground. See & Spray Select uses advanced camera and control technology to differentiate color on fallow ground, detects weeds, and spot sprays them.

“This targeted spray application has similar hit rates to broadcast spraying while applying 77% less herbicide on average, providing tremendous savings on inputs for farmers,”

Dawson said.

Also receiving a 2022 AE50 Award were MY22 John Deere 9 Series Tractors. The tractors help large-acre grain produces start earlier and run later to complete their spring seeding and planting work during tight, optimal seeding and planting windows. Powered by an all-new John Deere PowerTech 13.6L engine, 9 Series Tractors can pull wider implements faster and more precisely than ever before. When paired with integrated John Deere precision ag technology, farmers can drive important management changes to improve crop yields, lower input costs, and farm more acres in less time.

Last March, John Deere was the first agricultural company to bring to market a factory-installed, integrated liquid-fertilizer-delivery system on a tractor and planter together. The ExactRate liquid fertilizer system includes integrated ExactRate tanks on an 8RX four-track Tractor, integrated plumbing, and integrated factory-installed fluid tanks on the planter. When full, customers can use ExactRate to cover up to 80 acres per fill when applying at 20 gallons per acre. In addition, tracks on the tractor and planter reduce ground pressure and minimize soil compaction while seed and fertilizer are precisely placed.

John Deere also received an AE50 Award for its MY22 1775NT 24-Row Planter with features that increase onboard seed and fertilizer capacity and reduce soil compaction. New commodity tanks provide a 30-bushel increase in onboard seed capacity and a 150-gallon increase in liquid-fertilizer capacity compared to previous models, with a mainframe tracks option that reduces ground pressure under the center section by 70% compared to tires.

“The reduction in ground pressure helps increase crop yield by reducing soil compaction in rows under the center frame and increases the productivity of existing farmland. The additional onboard commodity capacity reduces the number of seed and fertilizer tender stops, saving customers time and fuel,”

Dawson said.

John Deere HDF Drapers were another AE50 award winner. These drapers provide the superior ground-following capability for on-and-off-ground harvesting, so customers can recover more crops while meeting the high-capacity needs of today’s combines. The HDF combines a flexible cutter bar with a hinged frame and hydraulic suspension and is the industry’s first combine header that merges a flexible cutter bar; hydraulic suspension between combine and head and between center frame and wings; a hinged frame with vertically articulating wings; and in-cab, on-the-fly float pressure and cut-height adjustment. This combination offers the best terrain-following performance in the industry.

Another AE50 award was presented to John Deere for its Quick Change Blades for its ProSeries Openers that help farmers save time and reduce labor costs required to change them on no-till air seeding tools. Using Quick Change Blades significantly reduces dealer maintenance costs and the time a customer may spend under the drill performing this routine maintenance.

John Deere W200 Series Self-Propelled Windrowers received an AE50 award and are available with optional new features that include TouchSet in-cab push-button controls operators can use to adjust swath flap and forming shields from the cab. This technology helps them maximize their windrowing efficiency with every pass through the field.

Last August, John Deere introduced the new CP770 Cotton Picker and new CS770 Cotton Striper. Each machine provides unmatched levels of productivity, technology, and efficiency for cotton growers. The CP770 Cotton Picker can harvest more than 10 acres per hour while reducing cotton losses. The CS770 Cotton Stripper can harvest up to an extra 100 acres per day in dryland cotton.

“Both machines feature a new cotton handling system that reduces wrap and hauling costs up to 8% on the picker and 12% on the stripper. Customers and the environment benefit through less wrap and fuel being used through the life of these harvesters,”

Dawson said.

AE50 awards were given to the Kuhn OptiWrap OWR 6000 inline round bale wrapper, the hydraulically adjustable windrow merger on the Kuhn FC 9330 D RA, the TwinPact plunger design on the Kuhn SB 1290iD, and the Smart Soil Technology feature on the Excelerator XT. All four machines are being recognized as some of the year’s most innovative designs in engineering products for the food and agriculture industries, earning a feature in the upcoming January/February 2022 special issue of ASABE’s magazine, Resource: Engineering & Technology for a Sustainable World.

The Kuhn OptiWrap OWR 6000 inline round bale wrapper offers exceptional wrapping productivity with industry-leading pre-stretchers that have a 70% stretch ratio to minimize film and fuel use. This higher stretch ratio provides more efficient plastic utilization and better bale compression, reducing plastic cost per bale.

The IntelliWrap system controls the wrapping process and allows the operator to easily adjust film layers, seam layers, load delay, and bale dimensions. IntelliWrap controls, combined with the optional FilmSense system, can adjust pusher and hoop speed to maintain the target layers count even if a stretcher runs out or tears film during the wrapping cycle. The BaleEye photoelectric sensor accurately and reliably detects a bale on the loading platform with no mechanically moving parts.

The hydraulically adjustable windrow merger on the Kuhn FC 9330 D RA is one of the most flexible merger systems in the triple mower conditioner segment. The belt speed and position are easily set from the cab, allowing customization of the windrow width from a narrow 5’11” to a wide 11’10”, the widest range in the industry.

Additionally, each merger conveyor can be individually folded up and out of the way to make wide windrows without merging. The self-contained hydraulic system compensates for hilly terrain with the help of an onboard inclinometer to control the belt speed.

The Kuhn SB 1290 iD TwinPact plunger offers higher bale densities without the need for a dramatically heavier baler and a substantial increase in horsepower requirement to operate the baler. The split plunger design intelligently applies the force of a standard 3×4 square baler to half the area, twice. Combined with the longer bale chamber and nine hydraulic cylinders on the iD baler, this system increases bale density. The combination of fewer, denser bales with lower fuel consumption offers customers a lower cost of operation to make heavy, high-quality bales.

Kuhn Krause Smart Soil Technology uses AEF certified ISOBUS electronic control to bring complete, on-the-go adjustment and multiple functions fine-tuning on the Excelerator XT into the tractor cab for the first time. Smart Soil Technology provides “preset only mode” with up to eight user-defined presets, which can be saved, allowing the operator to make multiple adjustments simultaneously with a simple touch of a button. The AEF certified ISOBUS software provides true plug-and-play compatibility with other certified displays and provides a compatible system from one brand tractor to another without the need for additional equipment.

The next-generation PLM Intelligence is a new electronic architecture that will be adopted in all New Holland’s next-generation equipment so that customers will find the same logic when switching machines and easily access data to get the job done more efficiently. The recognitions highlight how Case IH equipment and technology has successfully helped farmers achieve maximum productivity. The award-winning innovations include:

• WD5 series self-propelled windrowers
• Fast Riser 6100 series 3-section front-fold planters

One operator can convert from 13-meter planting width to 3.2-meter regulatory road transport width from the tractor cab in one minute versus multiple operators taking numerous hours for competitive 3-section planters. The area of principal use is row crop planting of crops, such as soybeans, corn, and/or cotton, in no-till to conventional tillage systems with 45-, 50-, 76- and/or 90-centimeter row spacing.

One of the award-winning innovations John Deere introduced last February was ExactRate, a liquid-fertilizer-application system on John Deere planters that farmers can use for row-by-row section control. This system helps reduce fertilizer costs at the time of planting by automatically shutting off applications in areas of overlap or non-application.

Also receiving a 2021 AE50 Award was the John Deere Harvest Monitor with SmartClean System – an industry-first cleaning performance and documentation system for mechanical sugar cane harvesters. SmartClean enhances operator decision making and helps deliver a consistent, customer-defined product to the mill. Coupled with integrated machine sensors, SmartClean minimizes cane losses and manages residue ejection, and leaf trash sent to the mill by automatically adjusting primary cleaning fan speed settings. Agronomic information also can be documented and recorded to provide live feedback to the farmer about the machine via the John Deere JDLink dashboard and the John Deere Operations Center.

Last summer, John Deere introduced two models of X Series combines, the X9 1000 and X9 1100, which received a 2021 AE50 Award. The X9 1100 can harvest up to 30 acres of tough, high-yielding wheat per hour, and harvest up to 7,200 bushels per hour in high-yielding corn. As conditions change, the combine automatically adjusts itself to keep running at peak levels.

John Deere also received the 2021 AE50 Awards for its HDR Rigid Cutterbar Drapers and CF Folding Corn Heads that were introduced last summer. The HDR enables small grains, oilseed, or soybean farmers to maximize their combine’s acres-per-hour capacity across various crops, changing conditions and uneven or rolling terrain while capturing more grain. With a new hinged frame, the HDR provides the unmatched terrain-following capability and uniform cut height when harvesting on curves or uneven terrain.

John Deere CF Folding Corn Heads feature an industry-leading fold cycle time of fewer than 40 seconds when connected to a John Deere X Series Combine. The folding corn head reduces a farmer’s operating costs by eliminating the need to purchase a header trailer to transport between fields. It also eliminates the time needed to mount the header to a trailer and then reattach it to the combine at the next field. After harvest, it takes up less storage space in the shed.

Another AE50 award was presented to John Deere for its CH950 Sugar Cane Harvester, the industry’s first two-row harvester introduced last March in Brazil. The CH950 doubles productivity and decreases crop losses by 60%. And, since it’s a two-row harvester, it enables the owner to reduce in-field transport equipment, the number of machine operators, and overall harvesting costs.

“A CH950 allows for more precise controlled traffic patterns in the harvesting operation and reduces compaction by 60% for increased yields and crop longevity while using 30% less fuel,”

Dawson said.

An AE50 award was given to the patented I-DENSE system found on Kuhn VB 7100 Series round balers, deeming this technology one of the year’s most innovative designs in engineering products for the food and agriculture industries. Kuhn I-DENSE technology will be featured in the January/February 2021 special issue of ASABE’s magazine Resource: Engineering & Technology for a Sustainable World.

The Kuhn I-DENSE system is an intelligent density system, which independently controls the baler’s density settings based on crop conditions and moisture levels. I-DENSE pairs a twin tensioning arm system with measurements from a moisture sensor to automatically adapt the baling pressure according to different crops and crop conditions, without intervention from the driver.

Winners were selected from the AE50 honorees, announced at the Agricultural Equipment Technology Conference earlier this year in Louisville.

Companies from around the world nominate products for AE50 Awards. An international panel of engineering experts selects up to 50 products that best reflect engineering advancements for the agricultural and food industries.

ASABE is an international scientific and educational organization dedicated to the advancement of engineering applicable to agricultural, food, and biological systems.

To be eligible for an award, products must have been introduced and made commercially available in the calendar year 2019. Products or systems nominated must be intended principally for use in the production, processing, research, storage, packaging or transportation of agricultural and food products, and have the potential for broad impact.

The awards will be presented at the Agricultural Equipment Technology Conference on Feb. 11 in Louisville, Kentucky.

The following are profiles of the award-winning products.

The Paddle Sweepway is a grain bin sweeping machine with an open head section. The skeleton-like design allows the grain to pass through the head section, which increases the speed of bin unloading and reduces the likelihood of center sump plugging. The new sweep combines the open design of a traditional auger sweep with the increased sweeping efficiency of a paddle sweep.

The Cyclone Air System Controls are used to control a pneumatic system that is moving grain through a tube, most commonly from a dryer to a cooling or storage bin. The control system uses sensors and algorithms to maintain a constant level of pressure in the pneumatic system, resulting in even grain flow, lower energy usage, higher grain quality, and reduced likelihood of a plugged tube.

MySukup.com is a new cloud-based platform for controlling Sukup Manufacturing Co. grain handling and storage equipment. Users can set up a MySukup.com account to monitor and operate their grain drying, moving, and storage equipment from anywhere using a smartphone or personal computer. Users can invite others to see equipment status data and can set permissions for each user, ranging from view-only permission to permission to make changes to all equipment and operating parameters.

The U-Trough Extended Center Sump has sumps on both sides of the gearbox that drives the sweep auger around a grain storage bin. Having a sump on both sides of the gearbox improves sweep performance by collecting grain faster than traditional sumps, which have only one passageway from the center of the bin floor to the unload system below.

The Grain Bin Door Safety Latch prevents the closing of a grain bin’s outer door unless the inner load-bearing doors are properly closed. It is designed to protect people near the outer door from being buried by grain if the outer door is opened while it is holding back grain. The new Grain Bin Door Safety Latch ensures proper closing of the load-bearing doors.
