Abbey Machinery LESS Applicators are key to efficiently meeting emissions reduction regulations while saving money through the precise application of valuable, nutrient-dense slurry.

There are a few key steps farms can take to reduce nitrogen emissions (nitrous oxide and ammonia) to the air and the loss of nitrates to water. Most importantly is the better utilization of applied N sources through the efficient use of N in organic manures to improve the carbon footprint of the farm and food produced.

N, P, and K nutrients are fundamental to effective food production. Crops rely on balanced nutrition from N, P and K to grow. Healthy grass transfers the nutrients through herd consumption promoting the health and energy of the herd.

In developing a sustainability program, the operator must account for factors such as weather, soil type, and local conditions when applying these nutrients to ensure nutrients are applied as efficiently as possible. Abbey Machinery LESS applications work with various technical controls such as NIR and ISOBUS to support slurry nutrient measurements and application control for optimal spreading. It is essential to consider the nutrients that are applied are delivered at the right rate at the right time and in the right place.

Abbey Machinery has a range of mounted and stand-alone low emissions slurry spreading applicators to meet new regulations. Slurry applicator models include a DM Band Spreader, Trailing Shoe, Shallow Disc Injector, and Cereal Applicators in a variety of different sizes ranging from 6 to 24 meters depending on the model, all for efficient and precise slurry spreading. Abbey applicators are also built to support umbilical systems.

Included in the Abbey Machinery range is the Trailing Shoe applicator. The Abbey Trailing Shoe technology distributes the slurry on the ground underneath the canopy of the grass.  This ensures nutrients are absorbed faster, leaf contamination is reduced, and carbon emissions are reduced to the absolute minimum.

Abbey Machinery Ltd., leaders in the field of slurry management and environmental control are introducing two brand new slurry applicators, the DM 10.5m Band Spreader and the 10.5m Tailing Shoe.

Abbey DM 10.5m Band Spreader

The DM 10.5m Band Spreader is close-coupled to the tanker without the need for special bracketry resulting in a lightweight solution. A very important feature is that it is carried on the tanker chassis independent of the back door. The DM 10.5m Band Spreader has proven to reduce the infield slurry spreading time by up to 35% compared to narrower slurry applicators and is ideally suited to large operators and contractors.

It is equipped with the Vogelsang distributor with 40 outlet pipes placing the slurry on the ground in neat rows at 250mm spacings, the optimum for best practice application.

This lightweight, fully galvanized applicator’s key features are its strength and design.  The extended boom tips are hydraulic folding, which adds the benefit of a break back system should the booms be positioned too close to field or paddock boundaries. 1.25m folding tips, which are inclined inward, create a compact machine behind the transporting tanker.

Abbey 10.5m Trailing Shoe

Abbey will also introduce a wider Trailing Shoe to its range to complement the existing 6m and 7m Trailing Shoe system. The new 10.5m Trailing Shoe reduces in-field compaction while accurately placing nutrients precisely on the crop. The 10.5m Trailing Shoe is fitted with a Vogelsang macerator, evenly distributing the slurry over each of its outlets at 250mm spacings.  All outlet pipes are fitted with steel wear points and rubber outlets feeding slurry in even lines behind the Trailing Shoe. These are independently sprung to ensure consistent soil contact. The machine folds into a neat transportable solution on the tanker.

The Abbey Trailing Shoe technology distributes the slurry on the ground underneath the canopy of the grass.  This ensures nutrients are absorbed faster, leaf contamination is reduced, and carbon emissions are reduced to the absolute minimum. Recent trial work carried out by Teagasc in Ireland resulted in 85% more grass from slurry when applied with Abbey’s Vertical Trailing Shoe vs Splash-plate. While all these features are retained, the 10.5m Trailing Shoe promises to take full advantage of new design geometry and efficiently apply slurry nutrients. Abbey is proud to announce that their 10.5m Trailing Shoe model is now at the final stages of development and will be introduced to the market later this year.
