Supported by Holt of California, the local Cat dealer, the prototype was tested over seven weeks in the almond and walnut orchards in California, with one site being Heinrich Farms, a 1,200-acre crop farm based in Modesto. Here, the unit operated an entire 10-hour workday on a single charge, loading 422,000 lbs. of nuts into trailers throughout the test.

To overcome the constraints of being off-grid, Heinrich Farms fully recharged the electrified field elevator overnight during non-working hours using the Cat XES60 Compact ESS mobile battery energy storage system, which provides up to 56.8 kWh of capacity.

“The electrified field elevator from Flory was reliable and unloaded our harvest as fast as conventional equipment powered by diesel engines while generating far less noise. It lasted an entire day of work without stopping for a recharge, and we’re eager to use it again for our next harvest as the technology continues to progress.”

said Jerad Heinrich, orchard manager for Heinrich Farms.

The project was the first presentation of a prototype machine by a third-party OEM using Caterpillar’s battery-powered solution. Based on the positive results of the demonstration, Flory plans to offer pilot units to select customers later this year, with full production expected in 2026.

Ideally Suited for Electrification

Field elevators are utilized for harvesting all tree nut crops, which include almonds, pecans, hazelnuts, macadamias and pistachios. Used for transferring nuts into trailers or stockpiles, field elevators can process anywhere from 50,000 up to 250,000 lbs. of nuts every day during the fall harvest season.

Typically, field elevators powered by diesel engines spend about 80% of their duty cycles at low idle in between loads, which accounts for about 45% of their total fuel consumption. These long periods of non-productive operation interspersed with the need for instantaneous power make the elevator an ideal target for electrification.

By replacing the traditional engine with an electrified powertrain, the new system can eliminate up to 126 lbs. of carbon emissions per machine in the field daily while eliminating diesel fuel purchase, transport and storage costs and reducing ambient noise for nearby workers.

With the support of the XES60, the field elevator was able to work off-grid during the day and be charged overnight.

Advancing Caterpillar’s Battery Electric Program

Caterpillar supported the project by evaluating system requirements; optimizing system architectures; managing system controls development, calibration, and verification; and performing final system validation.

Engineers integrated the batteries with inverters, motors, electronic controls, digital services and other critical technologies in a power-dense solution that addresses common user concerns while demonstrating the numerous benefits.

The electrified powertrain featured Caterpillar’s new prototype battery, which uses lithium-ion technology and features a modular design to boost performance while minimizing packaging. Caterpillar is developing a range of batteries for the off-highway industry.

Holt of California applied its specific knowledge of Flory’s equipment architecture and duty cycles to provide day-to-day engineering, integration and testing support.

Flory engineers coordinated the demonstration project from the Flory Industries’ headquarters and development center in Salida, CA, with support from Caterpillar and Holt of California’s teams located in the Sacramento area. Flory has specified Cat diesel engines for powered equipment throughout its fleet of agricultural equipment since 2002. The company currently uses U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final Cat engines for self-propelled harvesters, shuttle trucks, elevators and brush shredders.

The battery-powered elevator is designed to be configured with Cat Connect, enabling equipment owners and Cat dealers to remotely monitor performance during operation and charging cycles. This intelligence can then be leveraged to improve productivity by optimizing in-use and on-charge processes.

All farms involved in the project are customers of New Holland Agriculture, which is also a key partner of “Behind Food”.

The newest engine of the Brand, the F28, is being showcased in two configurations. The F28 Tier 4 Final is a new modular and multi-fuel solution specifically designed for light and compact agriculture machines. Whether fueled by Diesel or Natural Gas, it delivers a performance of a 3.4-liter engine in a 2-liter package.

There are other three compact and flexible solutions for light operations at FPT Industrial’s booth. The F34 Tier 4 Final Power Pack version comes with all components (e.g. air filter, cooling pack, ATS) pre-assembled in one package, providing power up to 55 kW and torque up to 320 Nm. The third highly compact solution at the show is the F36 Tier 4 Final, with the best-in-class power and torque density – up to 105 kW and 600 Nm.

For heavy-duty operations that require top performance, FPT Industrial is exhibiting the Cursor 9 Tier 4 Final Power Pack, which delivers maximum power of 308 kW and torque up to 1800 Nm. Because it is a ready-to-use power unit, it simplifies emission compliance for customers. In addition, it ensures low fuel consumption and low running costs thanks to EGR-free combustion, long service interval, and for-life ATS.

Lastly, for robustness and durability even in the most severe conditions, the N67 Tier 3 IPU is the right choice. Available in both mechanical and electronic configurations, it delivers power up to 175 kW, torque up to 1020 Nm, besides high fuel efficiency.

This article deals with the commercial vehicle sector in terms of CO₂ reduction, the technological drivers in the future for the powertrain and looks at modern semiconductor components based on Silicon Carbide (SiC), which enable the smaller, more efficient, and more power converters. Even more than for passenger cars, no uniform scenario will prevail in this sector due to the different drive architectures.

Advantages and challenges of electric motors in commercial vehicles

The targets emission standards formulated in many parts of the world for the reduction of greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions in transportation have ensured that electric drives have come to the fore. In addition to passenger cars, an increasing number of commercial vehicles such as trucks, buses, vans, or agricultural and construction vehicles are also being powered electrically. This makes them more environmentally friendly, quieter, and more efficient than their predecessors with combustion engines. Electrified commercial vehicles are also attractive to owners and operators, in terms of cost of ownership, maintenance and malfunction. This results in higher productivity and better return on investment.

A major advantage of the electric motor is its high efficiency. With a combustion engine, efficiency varies hugely, particularly when under variable or partial loads. In extreme cases, this can drop to 15 percent or less. An electric motor’s efficiency is not dependent on its operating point. Under the same operating conditions, the electric motors and inverters that make up an electric drive system will achieve much higher levels of efficiency. At their best, electric drive trains can achieve in excess of 80 percent efficiency. This is only possible because the power electronic section itself can reach efficiency levels of up to 85 percent.

Important factors to consider when designing or selecting an inverter include power density, reliability, robustness, efficiency, and security. Additionally, and particularly in the commercial sector, the long-term effect that harsh operating conditions may have on total life expectancy must also be taken into account. Generally speaking, the conditions are much more challenging than those faced by passenger cars. Developing inverters
according to these criteria requires deep application knowledge, as well as a semiconductor portfolio that covers power and driver modules, sensors, and microcontrollers.

Silicon Carbide (SiC) – new opportunities for the commercial vehicle industry

Even more, than in many passenger car models, a high range and long battery life is important in commercial vehicles. Since the battery also takes up a large installation space, there is a demand for power electronics with high efficiency. These enable the construction of more efficient traction converters but also save energy in smaller applications. These include hydraulic pumps, compressors in air conditioning and refrigeration units, and onboard chargers.

Components based on Silicon Carbide (SiC) offer significant improvements in these applications. In general, the technology incurs lower losses under the same load profile than power MOSFETs and IGBTs. This means they offer increased switching and current-carrying efficiency, advantages that come into effect at higher intermediate circuit voltages. Because of these attributes, SiC-based semiconductors are especially well suited to electric vehicles equipped with batteries that have higher voltages and total storage capacity. And because SiC devices are also able to operate at higher voltages, they can enable onboard charging solutions that deliver shorter charging times and lower total losses.

The inverter that controls the electric traction motor is a good example of a centralized system within a drive train. In terms of efficiency, these systems can benefit from using SiC components. The core function of the inverter is to convert a DC voltage into a three-phase AC voltage that is used to drive the motor. They also operate in reverse during regenerative breaking, which captures the vehicle’s kinetic energy to create a DC voltage used to recharge the vehicle’s battery. The efficiency of the system can only be maximized when the losses inherent in energy conversion are low.

Compared to conventional silicon, the improved conductivity of SiC components reduces these conversion losses, a large part of which is experienced in form of heat. The higher efficiency of SiC-based inverters helps maximize the driving range of eclectic vehicles, making the most efficient use of the limited battery capacity. Besides their advantage in terms of efficiency, inverters based on SiC-based components also exhibit higher power densities. This means that SiC-based inverters can be made physically smaller requiring less installation space.

In real-world agricultural working conditions, CO2 emissions are reduced by a minimum of 10% when compared to a standard diesel tractor and are close to net-zero when running on biomethane. Moreover, polluting emissions are reduced by 80% on average when compared to a standard Diesel engine.

Blue World employs methanol as an energy source, from which it first generates hydrogen and then, in a second step, generates electrical energy in the fuel cell. Blue World is already developing stationary fuel cell-powered gensets today. In the future, Deutz expects that the fuel cell technology shall be used for mobile applications in the off-highway segment, too.

PBST will include the latest generation of the MTU turbocharger family ZR1 to ZR5 in its product portfolio and will distribute them under the series name HIRO in the future.

“The MTU brand is characterized above all by its in-depth know-how in high-speed applications. Thanks to this product expansion, we are now able to offer our customers exactly the right turbocharger for their high-, medium- and low-speed applications under one roof via the PBST brand,”

The MTU turbochargers are offered on the basis of a modular system for engines in the 400 to 2,500-kilowatt power ranges in single- and two-stage versions. Rolls-Royce designs them to meet the specific requirements of various applications such as marine, rail, construction, heavy land vehicles, and power supply.

“Advanced turbocharging helps engines achieve low fuel consumption and high power over a wide speed range. It is an important building block for meeting increasingly stringent emission requirements in the future – without compromising engine performance or efficiency,”
