<p>Established in Chicago in 1950, by American designers Eero Saarinen and Charles and Ray Eames, the annually-presented Good Design awards are the oldest and most widely-recognized of their type and are administered by the Chicago Athenaeum&#8217;s Museum of Architecture and Design. The 70th edition of the judging, held during November 2020, saw record entry numbers exceeding 900 from manufacturers and designers hailing from over 48 countries and representing a wide range of sectors. Final judging took place online in November 2020, and the Steyr Konzept was the only tractor among the final award winners.</p>
<h3>The design acknowledges the past, points to future</h3>
<p>Blending innovative technologies to create a tractor that answers many of the critical challenges facing agriculture, <span style="background-color: #00ff00;">the Steyr Konzept was designed in conjunction with powertrain specialist FPT</span>, a sister brand of Steyr under parent company CNH Industrial. The result highlights the potential direction of environmentally friendly, efficient, and functional yet stylish tractor design.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;The futuristic lines of the Konzept&#8217;s external styling recognise the importance in agricultural machinery of both trusted brand heritage and forward-thinking design,&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>says <strong>David Wilkie, Head of the CNH Industrial Design</strong> team that together with our Innovation team, created this design concept.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;At the same time, the white external cab frame and asymmetric grille recall STEYR&#8217;s long history as a stylish high-end tractor brand. Our ultimate aim, though, was to create striking elements of style that, when combined with the designs of our engineers, also bring practical benefits in areas ranging from performance to visibility to sustainability.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p><span style="background-color: #00ff00;">Other external design features of significant practical benefit include cab-mounted cameras</span>, while interior concepts include the projection of operating data onto transparent screens, maximizing visibility, and a &#8216;digital farm office&#8217;, allowing farm management to take place from the operator&#8217;s seat.<span style="background-color: #00ff00;"> A head-up display projects key vehicle information into the driver&#8217;s field of vision.</span></p>
<h3>Drivetrain design innovation</h3>
<p>The Steyr Konzept&#8217;s innovative design continues within the tractor&#8217;s drivetrain, a modular hybrid electric drive combining a conventional four-cylinder diesel engine, generator, and individual electric wheel motors. This blends compactness, efficiency, and thought-through engineering, and allows different power sources to be used depending on the application. As a result, the tractor can be operated with zero noise/exhaust emissions where possible/required.</p>
<p><span style="background-color: #00ff00;">Steyr hybrid technology means power can be provided not only by the conventional engine, but by the engine-driven generator, or from a conventional plug supply, with energy capture also possible via recovery and storage capabilities</span>. It also networks the tractor&#8217;s electric motors, ensuring power is always available where needed, while an e-torque boost, fed from a central battery, can supply additional energy at peak power demand.</p>
<p>The result is a highly efficient electric continuously-variable drive, and the tractor design is further enhanced by the absence of need for a conventional transmission or hydraulic components, meaning fewer moving parts, greater efficiency of energy transfer, and reduced power/energy losses. This is extended further through the use of electric drive to also power the tractor&#8217;s PTO and hydraulic systems.</p>
<p>Immediately-available torque provides an immediate response at the wheels, while electric motors also mean the machine&#8217;s center of gravity is closer to the ground, ensuring better stability. Four-wheel steering and individual wheel motors also mean a high degree of maneuverability, minimize noise and allow for single-wheel suspension for additional comfort.</p>

<p>“Whenever we develop a machine, customer needs, such as durability, productivity, profitability and low operating costs, are always at the forefront of our designs. By reaching the 1 million-hour mark on our 944K loaders, we are affirming that <strong>electrically driven machines offer proven durability and performance advantages for our customers</strong>,” said <span style="background-color: #ccffcc"><strong>Grant Van Tine, solutions marketing manager, John Deere.</strong> </span></p>
<blockquote class="td_quote_box td_box_center">
<p>“We’re always looking for new ways to improve upon the equipment our customers need and can use our field-proven design to develop and perfect even more solutions in the future.”</p>
</blockquote>
<p>First launching in 2015, the 944K Hybrid model provides customers with a reliable, efficient, cost-effective solution. The 944K Hybrid features a <strong>536-horsepower, Final Tier 4 engine,</strong> which delivers impressive torque and responsiveness while maintaining good boom and bucket speed. At Cornejo &amp; Sons (Summit Materials), the 944K replaced a size-class larger competitive wheel loader. “The 944K meets our production requirements as well as our previous piece of equipment, and at a lower cost,” said <span style="background-color: #ccffcc"><strong>Adam Ware, site manager for Cornejo &amp; Sons (Summit Materials)</strong></span>, which owns a 944K Hybrid Wheel Loader. “The other machine burned about 24 gallons of fuel an hour, where the 944K burns around 9 gallons per hour while doing the same work.”</p>
<p>In addition to its <strong>fuel-saving capabilities</strong>, the 944K Hybrid also incorporates other features to deliver reliable, long-term performance, especially in quarry or large loadout applications. Most notable are the <strong>brushless AC generators and motors, water-cooled brake resistors and solid-state power electronics. The 944K’s electric drive system</strong> significantly reduces operating costs for customers compared to conventional drivetrains by eliminating torque converter and transmission rebuilds at mid-life.</p>
<p>Other key features include <strong>standard traction control</strong>, which automatically limits torque to any wheel when slippage occurs, increasing machine traction in poor underfoot conditions, and enhanced rimpull control to virtually eliminate tire spin and slicing. Coast control <strong>reduces service-brake wear and includes functions,</strong> like dynamic braking in a hydrostatic transmission, slowing the loader without touching a pedal and helping to reduce service-break component wear.</p>

The DX17Z-5 zero tail swing, electric mini excavator could be available for customers in North America as early as 2022.</h3>
<p dir="ltr"><span id="docs-internal-guid-74d2d0b1-7fff-6ad8-18e6-bf8044be5180">Doosan is developing the new electric mini excavator product because of requests from customers who work in certain applications where exhaust gases are prohibitive. An example of this need is interior demolition job sites.<strong> An electric machine gives excavator operators the ability to do their work with a machine they’re familiar with but without the inhibitions of diesel exhaust.</strong> The 1.7-metric ton size class was selected for this first model because of customer requests for a mini excavator that could work in confined spaces, requiring a machine with a narrow width to access the site.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr"><span id="docs-internal-guid-74d2d0b1-7fff-6ad8-18e6-bf8044be5180">Instead of having a traditional diesel engine, <strong>the DX17Z-5 mini excavator is powered by a battery,</strong> located where the machine’s engine and fuel tank would normally be placed. <strong>The battery supplies power to an electric motor that is used to operate the mini excavator’s hydraulic system.</strong></span></p>
<p dir="ltr"><span id="docs-internal-guid-74d2d0b1-7fff-6ad8-18e6-bf8044be5180">Doosan continues to investigate innovative fully electric or hybrid (electric and diesel) solutions to best suit the needs of its customers throughout the world.</span></p>

<h3>The company has been recognized for outstanding harvesting, product and technology innovations</h3>
<p><span style="background-color: #008000;"><strong>John Deere</strong> displayed at the <strong>2019</strong> <strong>Agritechnica</strong> exposition in <strong>Hannover</strong>, Germany, its award-winning product innovations and showcased its <strong>Future Technology Zone</strong></span>: an exhibit highlighting advanced machine technology concepts that could drive future innovations in agriculture. The exhibit included nine R&amp;D prototypes focused on automation, electrification and artificial intelligence.</p>
<p>The automation display focused on ways machines could perform certain operations in the field with minimal human assistance. <span style="background-color: #008000;">The electrification portion focused on replacing mechanical and hydraulic components to make machines more efficient and productive</span> while supporting emission-free farming and a reduced CO<sub>2</sub> footprint. Artificial intelligence was the third and final concept displayed.</p>
<p>Prior to the exposition, <span style="background-color: #008000;">John Deere was awarded one gold medal and three silver medals by the <strong>DLG</strong> (German Agricultural Society) jury for its latest machine technology innovations</span>. The one and only Gold Medal was awarded for the new John Deere <strong>eAutoPower</strong> transmission, the first electro-mechanical power split transmission that makes tractor-implement electrification possible. Silver Medals were awarded to John Deere for innovations that:</p>
<ul>
<li>Provide a combine operator an unprecedented level of control over the machine&#8217;s feed rate.</li>
<li>Improve the operation of a large square baler through intelligent control of the tractor&#8217;s transmission and a self-learning algorithm.</li>
<li>Deliver an overall efficiency package for a large combine.</li>
</ul>
<p>During the expo, <span style="background-color: #008000;">John Deere showcased its newest <strong>7R </strong>and <strong>8 </strong>Family Tractors</span>. In addition, John Deere has previewed an expansion to the top end of their model line-up with the all new <strong>X9</strong> <strong>Combine </strong>and matching Draper.</p>
<p>The X9 combine achieves this performance increase in productivity and harvest efficiency through the widest body available, improved crop flow, an increase in active threshing and separation areas, and a larger cleaning shoe, all while maintaining a transport width below 11-1/2-feet (3.5 meters). All combined, these features allow for a very high throughput, very low losses, improved grain and straw quality, and address the needs of large farmers looking to maximize their productivity and profits.</p>
<p>The new <strong>Draper</strong> enables maximum throughput in small grains. A hinged frame offers unmatched ground following capabilities, with the widest wing range available, resulting in better ground following in contours and sloping terrain, delivering clean, even stubble height and straw distribution for better seed establishment and emergence for the following crop. Additionally, a deep belt with a specially designed grain saving surface puts more grain in the combine and reduce loss at the header. The new Draper is also compatible with S-Series Combines.</p>
<p>All models of the S-Series Combine family continue to be available, and keep providing leading solutions in automation, grain quality, capacity, productivity and a low cost of operation.</p>

Let the control unit take care of driving the tractor during independent driving phases and headland manoeuvres. <strong>The hybrid steering system is connected to satellite guidance and is interfaced with the power steering control that is fully integrated into the vehicle.</strong></li>
<li><strong>The ADS manages to eliminate external stresses</strong> by adjusting the driving style to terrain conditions. It also lets you store wheel positions for slope and in-furrow operation.</li>
<li>Enjoy improved comfort: the ADS offers you an automotive-style experience with such features as <strong>automatic stiffening of the steering wheel as speed increases and automatic wheel return to central position after turns.</strong> Driving comfort is guaranteed by smart stiffness control for the front axle.</li>
<li>The all-in-one joystick enables you to control all hydraulic loads (up to 7 control valves) and directly control the steering system when the specific feature is enabled.</li>
<li>Check all tractor functions from a single <strong>monitor</strong> that automatically displays the functions used (e.g. hydraulic system, PTO, transport).</li>
<li>You can let the <strong>on-board computer</strong> take care of a number of other tasks, such as measuring working hours and consumption.</li>
