TERRASEM – the new generation

The new trailed seed drills are now also available with working widths of 8 and 9 metres and can be custom-equipped to handle all site-specific conditions. Thanks to the disc harrow as the leading tillage tool, the TERRASEM seed drills are ideal for mulch drilling and are available with WAVE DISC’s as an option for loosening the soil in strips. The CLASSIC version without tillage tools is impressively smooth running on prepared seedbeds. With their large working widths, high operating speeds are possible with the best positioning accuracy.

Convenient operation without crabbing

A new configuration of all tillage tools ensures that the machine works efficiently and 100 percent in a straight line. The disc harrow as well as the fertiliser coulters (D Z-machine) and DUAL DISC seed coulters are mounted in an X configuration. There is no need to grease the tillage tools because they are mounted on sealed bearings.

Metering with the highest precision

The metering systems are designed for the highest possible precision and ensure that exactly the right amount of any given seed type is used. The TERRASEM V 8000 D and TERRASEM V 9000 D are equipped with two metering systems as standard and have a seed hopper capacity of 5,600 litres. Seeding rates of 1.5 kg to 420 kg at 12 kph are possible. The seed flow rate can easily be adjusted on these machines without leaving the tractor seat.

Multiple sowing options

Single shoot, double shoot and double shoot-mix are the key to perfect emergence. Optimised to specific conditions and crop rotations, it is possible to vary between the application of

• seed,
• seed with fertiliser,
• two different mixtures of seed,
• additional components such as microgranules or a companion crop

using the TERRASEM Z models with FERTILIZER feature.

PÖTTINGER also proves its expertise in the digitisation with the new TERRASEM models by making them agrirouter-compatible.

Thanks to the optimized geometry of the front panel, the forage compression flap can now be better adjusted to the crop. The spring-loaded flap controls the automatic loading system. The sensor switches the scraper floor on and off, with a time delay if required. The 2,000 mm wide forage compression flap ensures perfect filling of the loading chamber, right up to the edges.

On the standard versions, two basic positions can be set manually. Infinitely variable hydraulic adjustment of the inclination is also available as an option. This also allows the flap to be fully retracted, so that the top section of the loading chamber can be opened when the loader wagon is deployed in harvest transport mode. Roof ropes, which are available as an option, can easily be removed.

For maximum conservation of the forage, an optional sensor is available to monitor the loading torque on the rotor. This is particularly important with the wet, heavy crops, which makes it more difficult for the material package to reach the forage compression flap. In this situation, the automatic loading system and the scraper floor are controlled based on the torque of the loading rotor. This configuration enables the wagon to be filled while maintaining the best possible forage structure even in the most difficult conditions.

The appropriate loading strategy can be selected from the driver’s cab to match the current task.

Pöttinger successfully combines tried and tested systems (such as the POWERCUT chopping system, the patented EASYMOVE swing-out knife bank, the proven 6-row floating pick-up, and a supporting tracking roller) with new technology to deliver the best quality forage.

Terrasem: he all-rounder for every situation

This newly designed seed drill with or without passive seedbed preparation delivers impressive performance with its precision universal metering and perfect colter system to guarantee exact seed placement. Flexible operation and being able to process up to three components simultaneously at a consistently high output translates into optimum drilling for the best seed emergence. The high-performance features of the Pottinger Terrasem increase yield capacity to boost the farmer’s profit. The new Terrasem will be available from November 2021.

Optimum plant density

The proven colter rail with a DUAL DISC colter system ensures an ideal plant density for the crop. With a row spacing of 12.5 cm as standard, or 16.7 cm as an option, optimum plant development is ensured and weeds are largely suppressed.

Two metering systems

Depending on the choice of machine, two different metering systems are available. The machines with a single hopper are equipped with injector metering – Terrasem 3000 D to V 6000 D as well as all Terrasem Classic models without tillage tools and without fertilizer application.

All Terrasem Z double seed hopper machines are equipped with a pressurized hopper system. The two-part hopper with a fixed 60:40 partition can also be filled with 100 percent seed. Integrated pressure differential sensors ensure the reliability of the system.

Soil conservation – high-volume grooved tyre packer

The large-volume packer tyres reduce the pressure applied to the ground and minimise rolling resistance to prevent the bulldozing effect. A large contact area in combination with the special grooved profile ensures optimum consolidation of the seed rows. In addition, the packer is hydraulically damped to support smooth operation during sowing. This allows high driving speeds to be maintained on different types of soil.

Low power requirement

Thanks to the trailed seed drill and power harrow combination, the tractor does not need to lift heavy implements. Uniform weight distribution is ensured because the machine is attached to the lower linkage arms and guided by the tyre packer. A result is a smooth-running machine.

Longitudinal partition seed hopper

The design of the longitudinal pressurised hopper with a capacity of 2,800 litres is completely new. The hopper is divided 50:50 in the direction of travel, so that seed can be drilled with fertiliser or on its own. Special attention has been paid to providing easy access to the seed hopper.

Optimum manoeuvrability

An extremely compact design and the intelligent configuration of the seed hopper give the seed drill excellent manoeuvrability. Even with dual wheels, it is possible to turn straight into the next pass. The shortened, low design of the hopper and the integration of the packer into the chassis ensure fast, space-saving turns at the headland.

Flexible operation with a single shoot

The newly designed AEROSEM pressurised metering system is designed for the highest application rates. This system ensures exact seed flow rates regardless of the type of seed or the working conditions. Each side of the hopper features a separate metering system – but feeds the same single shoot seed line. The metering systems can be controlled independently of each other. Two components can be applied simultaneously. Moreover, two application maps can be used for site-specific drilling.

Proven DUAL DISC coulters

The DUAL DISC double disc coulter system ensures precise seed placement even in the most difficult conditions. The large counters are slightly offset and form a clean and tidy seed slot. The maintenance-free, equal-length coulter arms with an ab offset of 30 cm ensure maximum reliability even with a high level of plant residues. With up to 60 kg applied to each seed coulter, reliable cutting through is guaranteed at high driving speeds. The V-shaped seed slot prevents the seed from rolling.

Clean forage with the lowest crude ash ingress

To keep the forage clean, the 7-row controlled floating pick-up with a working width of 2,300 mm ensures maximum performance for tidy and loss-free collection in a single pass. The pick-up’s new hydraulically adjustable drive system adapts the speed automatically to the driving speed. There is less of a dragging effect and the result is perfect chopping quality. The jockey wheel steering system can be engaged to enable even better ground tracking.

The pick-up position control, which is supplied as standard, keeps the cross-section of the opening between pick-up and drawbar constant to ensure maximum throughput during the entire loading process. The tines, which are controlled in a sweeping arc by the cam track, convey the crop gently upwards and actively transfer it to the rotor at a suitable speed. Instead of dragging the forage through, they promote the best possible chopping quality. The tines then dip down at a right angle to prevent the forage from being drawn in. 
To help the driver when accessing narrow field entrances, the optional hydraulic jockey wheel folding system can be activated.

The optional tracking roller prevents the pick-up wheels from sinking into tractor wheel marks and enables unrestricted movement for the best ground tracking. The wide additional tracking roller and the two jockey wheels form a stable support triangle for perfect ground tracking and, as a result, the lowest possible crude ash ingress.

The best forage for more yield

High-yield dairy cattle need a high-quality basic ration with optimum forage structure. Thanks to the POWERCUT short-length chopping system with an asymmetric array of 48 knives and a theoretical chopped length of 34 mm, you get to harvest the best quality forage. The long arc of the knives delivers a slicing cut along the full length of the blade. The forage is chopped right through exactly and uniformly. This makes the chopped material an ideally structured ruminant stimulating forage. The knife bank release system – handled without the need for tools – and the central knife release system is operated conveniently using a control panel to the side – pure convenience.

Power transfer reinvented

The multi-purpose rotor loader wagon combines essential performance features for forage harvesting with those required for transport: highest throughput, clean crop intake, precise chopping quality, and high operational reliability for a loader wagon, and flexibility and volume of a transport wagon. The new models have been engineered for tractors between 200 and 500 hp. This makes it the first loader wagon to reach the magical power limit of 500 hp, placing it well within the throughput capacity of a forage harvester.

Great attention has been paid to implementing a modern and innovative driveline concept: The driveline has a double wide-angle PTO shaft without a clutch and is powered by a Powerband. Optimum power transmission to the rotor is ensured by angular/planetary gears in the rotor drive. The Powerband delivers maximum power transfer in all operating conditions. It ensures smooth running and a damping effect in changing operating conditions. This protects the driveline and reduces maintenance and wear costs to a minimum.

The loading rotor

Seventy-five percent of the rotor’s width is fitted with a new high-strength case-hardened steel that ensures high wear resistance in areas subjected to a lot of wear. This increases service life by 25 percent.

With the new unloading beater driveline that delivers 210 kW, unloading capacity has been increased by another third: Unloading takes about one minute. The beater drive switches integrated into the angular gearbox are activated by the belt tensioner to ensure friction-locked start-up.

The soft-start protects not just the beater driveline elements but also the scraper floor drive and the chains. No power peaks occur and the service life is prolonged. The innovative shape of the beater rotor with a V-twist conveys the crop uniformly and with no power peaks. They reliably loosen even highly compacted forage. The uniform blanket of forage output by the JUMBO facilitates the rollers’ work to guarantee efficient compaction and the best silage quality.

The moveable front panel provides a significant increase in the volume of 4.3 m3 for the same length of the wagon. This also makes the loader wagon much more compact. It is now more maneuverable in small fields and on narrow field tracks.

The patented, intelligent front panel enables a unique loading and unloading strategy. Available as an option, its length of 830 mm means it has a particularly generously dimensioned upper forage compression flap. An additional dynamometer bolt is fitted in the intelligent front panel to enable a new control concept.

The loading pressure is now measured at the front panel. With the combination of all measuring points (loading torque sensor, dynamometer bolt, compression flap sensor), the degree of compaction and the desired filling level can be directly regulated. As a result, the parameters can be perfectly adjusted to the forage harvesting requirements. With the active forage compression flap, unique loading rates of up to 400 kg/m³ can be achieved if required, depending on the DM content.

The intelligent automatic loading system

Three predefined modes can be selected for loading, ranging from light loading to medium compression to high compaction. They enable optimum adaptation to different types of crops, the dry matter content, and the degree of filling.

Depending on the job at hand and the requirements, the three modes can be selected for the most suitable filling strategy. The driver can program the set-up with predefined parameters and so vastly improve the overall cost-effectiveness of the tractor and wagon combination. If the scraper floor is actuated by the automatic loading system, the front panel helps push the forage along and then automatically moves back into the loading position. This ensures that the forage stays extremely compact.

In addition, two 2-speed motors — mounted externally on both sides — and a patented boost function, ensure maximum unloading performance. To give the driver a clear view from the tractor into the loading chamber or for driving under the harvester auger in harvest transport mode, the compression flap can be hydraulically folded forwards.

The scraper floor has been lowered at the front by 250 mm to reduce the power required during loading. This also increases the net payload thanks to higher compaction. The wide flat link chains with a breaking load of 13 t provide great stability, maximum reliability, and smooth running.

The scraper floor slats are double-bolted and rest on exchangeable guide bars. Thanks to its high power transmission and compact construction, the JUMBO is suitable for transporting all kinds of chopped material.

Another advantage when using the wagon in transport mode is that the pick-up can be removed. This reduces the weight of the JUMBO by 520 kg and protects the pick-up from damage. The pick-up can be removed using an optional handling trolley.

As a multi-purpose loader wagon, the JUMBO is also a fully-fledged transport wagon that can be used for transporting materials other than grassland harvest. By removing the pick-up, transport capacity is quickly and easily increased. The newly designed loading chamber cover retains the load and secures it ready for transport on the road.

Making reliability a priority

The hydro-pneumatic tandem and tridem chassis provide a wide support spacing of 1,100 mm and 856 mm at the steered axles for safe handling, exceptional stability on steep ground as well as enhanced safety when driving at high speeds. The unique mechanical anti-roll bar effect is achieved by the integration of longitudinal linkage springs on the chassis, the bolted connection of the axles, and the wide spring spacing.

The large axle compensation of up to 270 mm ensures better climbing ability on inclines, in the clamp, and on poor-quality roads. The hydro-pneumatic axle compensation ensures uniform wheel pressure in all operating situations. An impressive increase in driving comfort has been achieved by fine-tuning the suspension characteristics. Using a different hydraulic accumulator when the loader wagon is empty from the one when the wagon is full noticeably increases driving comfort.

Safe and sound

The newly designed load retention system covers the load and secures it ready for transport on the road. The cover consists of two folding frame sections with a hydraulic chain drive mounted at the center of the shaft.

The EASY MOVE swing-out knife bank makes it easy to change and reverse the knives. The knives are made of hardened DURASTAR tool quality steel for a 20 percent longer service life. A patented individual knife protection system protects the loader wagon and subsequently the livestock.

Turning instead of changing, is the way to go with the TWIN BLADE reversible knife. Its patented shape ensures double the service life. No need to sharpen or carry a second set of knives: please turn over!

The triggering pressure of the knife protection system has of course been adapted to the high throughput capacity. At the same time, the knives are held in the correct position to make sure that they chop consistently.

The AUTOCUT knife sharpening system enables the knives to be sharpened full automatically directly on the loader wagon. Permanently sharp blades can reduce fuel consumption by up to 15 percent. Another positive effect is that maintenance work is reduced by up to 45 minutes per day. The sharpening process can be carried out conveniently during a break. Thanks to the new electric-hydraulic drive system, the sharpening time is now even shorter.

Intelligent control

Pottinger’s answer is the POWER CONTROL system and the EXPERT 75 and CCI 1200 ISOBUS terminals. These terminals replace the numerous implement-specific units on-board and enable professional operation of all ISOBUS-compatible machines, regardless of whether they were made by Pottinger or other manufacturers.

Like clockwork

When the master clockmaker and locksmith Franz Pöttinger founded the company in 1871, he would never have guessed that exactly 150 years later, the company’s fourth production plant would be opened under his name. In addition to the main plant in Grieskirchen (AT) that manufactures grassland implements, the seed drill plant in Bernburg (DE), the tillage plant in Vodnany (CZ), and the new plant now complete the quartet. Round balers and large rakes will be manufactured here.

The first phase – which provides 6,300 m2 of production space on a site of 17 hectares – was completed in the record time of just one year. In order to be able to support the ongoing growth of the company, Pöttinger designed the new production plant in such a way that, when completed, it will offer a production area similar to the manufacturing plant at headquarters.

The groundbreaking ceremony held during the official opening marked the start of construction on the second expansion phase. This new stage means an expansion of about twice the current production area and an investment of around another EUR 45 million.

In the future, the high-quality paintwork of the machines will also be carried out at the new plant. Cathodic dip painting is an environmentally friendly coating process. No solvent is used in the mixing and application of the coatings. This gives Pottinger machines eye-catching paintwork that has a longer service life. That, too, is sustainability.

“We are pleased with the positive development of our business and want to use the momentum of current demand to achieve sustainability by expanding distribution and introducing new products. This development will be supported in the best possible way by these expansion phases,”

says Gregor Dietachmayr, Spokesperson for the Management Team, delighted with the ongoing expansion work.

As a family business and agricultural machinery manufacturer, Pöttinger focuses on people and the environment. Sustainability is also a priority in the construction of new buildings.

• Wood has been used throughout as a renewable building material.
• Implementing a green roof reduces the effects of soil sealing to a minimum.

• Energy-saving measures such as the use of LED technology, high-quality thermal insulation, and heat recovery are already part of the philosophy at Pöttinger.

The natural exterior design promotes biodiversity: A 6,000 m² flowering meadow in front of the plant and several beehives provide further integration into the natural surroundings.

“The natural outdoor environment features wooded and lawn areas as open spaces for employees to enjoy during their breaks. The new building will create additional value in the region as we once again strengthen our roots in Austria; a production location with high-quality standards,”

says Jörg Lechner, the managing director responsible for the construction project.

Around 60 employees will start assembling the IMPRESS round baler and TOP large rakes. The assembly line is an ergonomic workplace designed to the highest standards.

“When the additional building has been completed, we will be able to offer another 30 to 40 people a high-quality workplace here,”

says Lechner, who is responsible for production.

By building the new plant near to the group’s headquarters, the international agricultural machinery company is honoring its local roots.

“The entrepreneurial drive of the founder Franz Pöttinger laid the foundation for an internationally successful company 150 years ago with the development of his forage cutting machine. This positive spirit will continue to flourish in the new plant. The ongoing development of the company, supported by high-quality products that are technically outstanding, sets the pace for further expansion phases. Space-saving, easily accessible using the loading platform, and mounted in front of the seed hopper, the pneumatic sowing unit covers a wide range of applications.

Flexible applications

In addition to surface application, the Tegosem can also feed the additional component directly into the metering system in the single shoot process. Fertiliser and micro-granules can then be deposited directly with the seed, promoting ideal development of the crop during germination and emergence. Surface application is used for companion crops such as grass and is carried out between the tyre packer and the coulter rail. This increases the degree of ground cover so that water losses are greatly minimized.

Intelligent metering

Seed distribution on the Tegosem is pneumatic and can be controlled conveniently using the terminal. Metering is started and stopped by the central metering unit on the Terrasem. Two different metering wheels can be used as standard: one for larger seeds such as cereals, lupins, peas and beans, and the other for fine seeds such as clover and cress.

Versatile seed management

In the single shoot process, the additional components are added to the Terrasem seed flow by the metering system. Changing between single shoot and surface application is done conveniently by switching two distributors in the seed line.

The single shoot process uses the proven Dual Disc coulters. This prevents the seed and fertiliser or micro-granulate and additional component from bridging. Optimum seed placement is the result. The seed is placed behind the tyre packer using baffle plates for the best distribution. The risk of fine seed drifting is avoided by spreading the seed close to the ground.

Additional application scenarios

In addition to being mounted on Terrasem mulch seed drills, Tegosem units can also be used on Lion power harrows, Terradisc disc harrows, or Synkro stubble cultivators. This avoids unnecessary passes to complete the sowing process while saving resources.

Gerhard Forster is a Pottinger customer who runs a successful organic farming business with 95 hectares of arable land. Their main focus is on the production of threshed crops such as spelled, emmer, and einkorn wheat as well as lentils. They also grow pumpkins to make seed oil. An AEROSEM 4002 ADD pneumatic seed drill with a SEED COMPLETE package in combination with a LION 403 power harrow has been in operation on the farm since early 2020.

Convenience and efficiency for soil and seed

In addition to the electric metering drive, the heart of the system is the CCI 1200 terminal with a SEED COMPLETE package. The SEED COMPLETE package contains intelligent smart farming solutions, including a communication unit. This enables the use of VARIABLE RATE CONTROL (the seed rate is precisely adjusted to site-specific soil conditions using application maps previously created on the PC) and SECTION CONTROL (the metering system switches on and off automatically at the headland). “The CCI 1200 opens up a lot of opportunities. All my ISOBUS machines can be operated using one control terminal. By communicating with agrirouter, the machine data from all of my machines – regardless of manufacturer – can be transmitted to NEXT Machine Management and NEXT FARMING. I can immediately find all the data I need for documenting my operations. Information on fertilizer and sowing rates is always available and can be traced seamlessly, even over a period of years,”

says Gerhard Forster about his positive experience with this system.

Documentation is easy to create and save intuitively. Jobs are created at the control terminal before work begins and then processed directly. As soon as the job is finished, the collated data is transferred to NEXT Machine Management using the mobile data network. This is done by setting up a WLAN hotspot on a smartphone.

Perfect drilling even in difficult conditions

The seed drill technology delivered an impressive performance even in difficult operating conditions in autumn 2020.

“The DUAL DISC colters on the AEROSEM did a great job. Despite the difficult conditions, all our autumn sowing jobs were completed by the end of November. This year I had the opportunity to do some contract work with the seed drill because it works so well in our region, even in the most adverse conditions,”

explains Forster.

The customer was also very satisfied with the SECTION CONTROL system. The IDS distributor head in conjunction with the automatic switching system allows the working width to be adjusted by the meter, which makes a serious saving on resources.

Future-safe technology

Forster has already invested in the future with the AEROSEM 4002 and SEED COMPLETE.

“There are still many advantages open to me in terms of data management and machine control,”

says Forster.

In order to increase output even further, he intends to manage his whole farm on a site-specific basis in the future. He has already laid the foundation stone with the latest Pottinger seed drill technology.

A quality product made in Austria

The Pottinger cutter bar features an impressively sleek and dynamic design. Just 4 cm high, the cutter bar guarantees optimum crop flow. And because it is only 28 cm wide, it delivers the best ground tracking and a first-class cut. Thanks to a precision welded construction, the cutter bar is extremely robust and 100-percent sealed. This means the gear oil remains in the gearbox permanently, even after years of use.

The mower discs are driven by gears that are almost the same diameter (44 and 35 teeth). As a result, at least three teeth are always in contact to guarantee the lowest stress to the gears and the highest reliability. The specially polished surface of the gears submerged in gear oil ensures smooth running.

The best forage and tidy mowing pattern

The streamlined leading edge of the cutter bar allows the soil to pass underneath, separating it cleanly from the crop. Cleaning paddles prevent dirt from accumulating on the upper surface. A long tradition

The arable and grassland sectors have been very important to Pottinger since the company was founded almost 150 years ago. Initially, a supplier of purely grassland equipment, the cornerstone for successful tillage was laid back in 1975 with the acquisition of the Bavarian Plough Factory in Landsberg, Germany. Pottinger has a long tradition of moving with the times and has made a name for itself with the ongoing development of its products.

New products for crop care

Farming methods are constantly changing due to a call for the reduction of chemical pesticides, lucrative government subsidies and the increasing demand for sustainably produced food. Farmers are now confronted with new challenges in crop care, which also impact the choice of agricultural technology used.

Benefit-driven, versatile and efficient machines are required and Pottinger now offers the answer with a range of rotary hoes, vario hoes and constant pressure hoes. Stephan Ackermann, Head of Product Management, emphasises:

“When expanding our arable product range, we wanted to make sure that the high specifications of the machines in this segment are met in terms of ease of use, high output, reliability and durability. We will achieve exactly that in adding the products from CFS to our product range.”

In addition to taking over the products, the two founders of CFS, Andreas Egelwolf and Leopold Rupp, as well as several experienced employees, will support Pottinger actively in the future. They will officially start their work as Pottinger employees on 01 August 2021.

The location in Stoitzendorf will operate as a crop care competence centre, mainly concerned with product development, but also with manufacturing various products.

A successful start

There is still a lot to do in terms of preparation before the official launch of the crop care range on 01 August 2021, such as integration of systems and processes, staff training, etc.
