Last year, AEM completed research to identify the market for education directed at end-users that could drive awareness, adoption, and implementation of technology. This research led to an understanding of the end-user journey related to equipment technology adoption.
Realizing that most end-users were in the middle of their technology adoption journey and there was a need in the marketplace for equipment technology education, AEM launched its series of CONEXPO-CON/AGG Tech Talks in 2021, with the support and approval of its CE Sector Board and the AEM Board of Directors.
“These live and on-demand education opportunities offer uniquely valuable information that contractors can apply today. Whether it’s expert insights from leading technology providers, contractor-led training on practical technology applications, or demonstrations from certified instructors, our Tech Talks provide contractors with firsthand — and on-demand — access to a real-world perspective of how they can grow their business.”
said AEM Director of Education Brooke Konopacki.
The first of three virtual events went live on Feb. 4. from the Las Vegas Convention Center. Brian Yost, chief operating officer, Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), and Terry Miller, Miller Project Management, owner representative for LVCVA, were on-site at the new West Hall to give viewers an overview of the construction of the People Mover and highlight some of the unique technology used to complete the underground transportation system.
A total of 252 viewers tuned in to the live stream event, which is also available on-demand. Nearly 97% of evaluation survey respondents indicated they were satisfied or very satisfied with the event.
The supporting on-demand content, focused on machine control and grade control, in addition to cost justification and team development, went live immediately following the event. The on-demand content featured more than 70 videos and almost 10 hours of content from contractors, certified trainers, technology solutions providers, and OEMs, including:
- An Intro to Machine Control and How it Works
- Choosing the Right Equipment for Your Project
- Moving from 2D to 3D
- The Competitive Advantage with Machine Control
- 90% Complete is 100% Wrong – Cross Section Checks
- Contractor Conversations
- Customer Stories
As of Feb. 26, 83 unique users had logged in to the on-demand platform, each watching 3.8 videos on average. Sixty-six of the more than 70 videos had been watched, each watched an average of 4.76 times. AEM continues to promote the on-demand platform through social media, paid advertising, and search sites, as well as the CONEXPO-CON/AGG 365 newsletter.
Initial feedback from the on-demand content has been overwhelmingly positive:
- “I think darn near every machine control question asked of me over the years is answered in CONEXPO-CON/AGG’s Tech Talks.”
- “WAY more than I expected.”
- “There is a ton of great content there (NOT a bunch of canned corporate stuff).”
- “If you have machine control questions, chances are, the answer is there AND from a real in-the-field user.”
“We could not realistically expect to receive this kind of positive feedback without the support of our AEM members. Because of member sponsorships, we are able to offer this remarkable content for free. We are relying on our members to continue to make this series a success, not only through sponsorships and content but also by sharing the series with their customers and dealer networks.”

The second CONEXPO-CON/AGG Tech Talk event, scheduled for April 22, will focus on telematics. The third and final event in the 2021 series, scheduled for June 10, will focus on safety and autonomy. Similar to the February event, each virtual event will have its own supporting on-demand content.
